Make magic come out of your fingertips!, 22 Aug 2008
Another wonderful book from a truly inspirational artist.
This series of books, by Chrisi Frieson, will turn the amatuer into the artist, and the clay artist will love the inspiration that she/he draws from this book.
I have worked with clay in most of its guises, for many years - and came to polymer only in the past 7 years. I have made it.. sold it.. and taught it - and I highly recommend this book to all polymer workers. Be you a crafter or an expert in this field, this range of books has something for everyone.
For the crafter - the instructions are clear and come with step by step photographs that are so incredibly wonderful, that I wished someone had have done something like this when I first came to use polymer.
They are the best of all the books I have seen, and are full of information and snippets, words of advice and fun comments. The writers personality comes shining through and she will remove any fear that you have about making a mess.
If you can only afford one clay book.. make it one of these in this range. You won't be disappointed. (And I bet you the contents of my purse that you come back for the others in the range!) :o)
Happy making, all.

A real inspiration!!, 29 Sep 2007
Polymer clay artists are frequently inspired by other art forms -from fibre and metalwork to painting and sculpture. Judy shows how to turn inspiration into reality and just how versatile polymer clay is for this purpose.
Each chapter starts from a material-based art tradition, eg. glass, metal, wood, and develops the techniques associated with these crafts in concise, clearly explained projects. Each technique has a gallery of beautiful examples of both the source artforms, such as exquisite pieces of wood furniture, and several works in polymer clay inspired by the material and sometimes combined with it in mixed media objects. Judy has selected her gallery artists with care - the best work by the best artists -dazzling! By illustrating high standards of design and execution, she places Polymer Clay on an equal footing with older art material traditions and demands that we keep aiming higher. For me this is the real inspirational effect of a great book. Well done, Judy Belcher.

Whilst giving the basics needed for beginning with polymer clay, I found that most of the projects were for Pins/Pendants/Bracelets etc. Bananto gives 'palettes' which indicate the colours used for a particular piece, and is comprehensive regarding tools needed and terminology. Making & using Canes is well covered, but for me a lack of bead projects in the book meant 4 stars instead of 5. Purely personal of course! As most of my hobby is the making of necklaces and bracelets using beads, I was disappointed by this, and would have liked some beginners tips on bead making other than the few mentioned. A good book which is nicely presented, but needs expanding into more necklaces etc. for me. Other books such as those by Sue Heaser suit me better.

packed with detail and gorgeous inspirational photos., 23 Feb 2004
Having bought this book as a mere accompaniment to"Faux surfaces in Polymer Clay" by Irene S. Dean I was very pleasantly surprised by the highly detailed information provided by Victoria Hughes. Almost any question you may have while reading about the techniques will be answered. I also liked the chapters at the beginning which are inspirational and really get you thinking in different ways by encouraging you to experiment and really use parts of your creative brain that you never knew you had! There are lots of photos in the book including many pieces of beautiful art work in polymer clay(and I mean art!) and for each imitative technique such as turquoise, lapis lazuli and ivory ther are two levels of project. These all look stunningly realistic. I was very impressed and delighted to find this book had such high standards. It was exactly the kind of polymer book I had been searching for!

Exciting new techniques, 05 Jun 2005
This is the second polymer clay book I have bought, after a lot of research to see which one would best compliment the first book I purchased. I loved the explanations for the chrysanthemum cane pendant and the faux fabric box, they made them very easy to follow. There is a section on precious metal clay - basic techniques, at the back, which is quite inspiring. This is an excellent book for anyone wanting something that is not a run-of-the-mill polymer clay book, offering some new ideas.
