Great fun but limited life - one use only., 02 Dec 2008
I love the Klutz books and my children had great fun making the sparkly handbags but once finished they were never played with again as they are not very sturdy and this book is one use only. We get more mileage and playtime out of other excellent Klutz books like the 'Tree House Bugs' or purse and ring book whose instructions can be used again and again.
This is still a very good book worthy of 4-5 stars though.
You get 4 paper handbags to decorate, pompoms, jewels, fabric puffies, a glue stick (which does work well), sequins, fancy cording and punch out items like mobile phone, lipstick, watch, glasses and drivers license.
It is a great craft activity with good quality lovely looking parts but will only take you a short while to complete. There is a nice touch of making the watch and glasses which involves 'making them' using tape or the stickers provided to fix the small paper bits together.
Recommended.
Brilliant value, 15 Jul 2007
It's all there in one small book - cardboard handbags with stickers and glittery bits and bobs to decorate them with as well as cardboard sunglasses and a whole selection of other must-have paraphanelia - mobile, lipstick etc!
Super party gift and am ordering some more!

It provides some projects for you to complete. Mainly a series of holders, for your keys, cards etc. It gives you a plan for each one, in inchs, but doesn't discuss the techniques/tools needed. Very basic guide, not great for beginners as I am.

This book is truly a must have for the person who wants to learn to make their own high quality buckskin. It will help the seasoned tanner as well as the beginner. buying this book is money well spent. Best that I have seen on the subject., 26 Jun 1998
I review many books for one medium or another, centering on rendezvous crafts. This is the best book on the subject, along with clear instructions and well done photographs to highlight one process or another. The only thing that I can write about this title is GET THIS BOOK! Layout is outstanding. I have seen too many books with good information and **horrible** layout. This book represents a perfect combination of outstanding layout and excellent textual presentation. You **will not** get any better. A must-have for anyone interested in the way things were., 11 Jan 1998
Writing a regular outdoors column for four SC newspapers and having been involved with primitive skills for over ten years, I can honestly say that Mr. Richards' book on hide tanning with the brain-tan method is one of the best I have seen. I first learned to tan hides with this method when I was still in high school and have enjoyed making my own buckskin ever since. When I got my copy of Deerskins into Buckskins in the mail, my learning started with the picture on the cover and didn't stop until I reached the back cover. Specifically, the front cover photo shows a skin sack smoking, but the hide is hung from the rump not the neck as I had been doing. Mr.Richards goes on to say that this allows the hide to hang with fewer folds and so, prevents streaking from the smoke. He's right!! Probably the best bit of knowledge I gained from this book is glueing the seam with regular elmer's glue, instead of sewing it shut or using clothespins. The glueing makes a tighter seam, is faster than the other methods, and because it is air-tight, it forces the smoke to penetrate the hide instead of rushing out of the gaps. Due to the pressure, the hide balloons, further reducing any folds or wrinkles in the hide. This is the fastest method I have ever tried. These two bits of knowledge alone make the book worth the price asked but when you combine it with the author's easy, simple style of writing, you have a true gem. I've read it from cover to cover at least twice and will undoubtedly read it again. Take it from an experienced tanner, you won't be dissappointed.

Perfect DIY Whip Manual, 23 Feb 2004
This is a great book for anyone interested in making a whip. The instructions are clear and precise with good diagrams. In only a couple of weeks I have gone from purchasing the book to finishing my own vegetable tan leather stock whip that cracks beautifully.
If you want to make whips, buy this book - it's that simple., 07 May 2000
This book has all the basic information you need to make high quality whips from cow-hide and kangaroo hide. Being the work of an Australian whip-maker, you'll find the emphasis on the Australian style of cattle-whip (the stock-whip) rather than the American style (the bull-whip). Some people who are steeped in the American "Indiana Jones", "Catwoman" and "Rawhide" culture may regret the absence of a great deal of bull-whip information ... but don't let that deter you. Not only is a lot of Edward's book applicable to both whip types, but the stock-whip is a superior item anyway. Forget cowboys, think stockmen, and you'll be VERY happy with a 'roo-hide stock-whip! AND THIS BOOK WILL TELL YOU HOW TO MAKE ONE

The best teaching aid for the experienced and beginners, 01 Aug 1999
Bruce Grant shared his genius with the world by writing the "Encyclopedia of Rawhide and Leather Braiding. This book has text and illustration, for how the knots and plaits are constructed. Patterns also included for items that may have been lost forever if he never wrote them down.
An essential reference, 07 Nov 1997
Grant's survey of leather braiding is an essential reference for those interested in leather working, covering riatas, bosals, quertas, whips, fancy knots and more. He also covers methods of duplicating complicated knots from an extant piece. The book covers most of his volume _How to Make Cowboy Horsegear_.
Not enough detail for successful tanning, 22 Sep 1998
No offense to the author, but this book just doesn't have enough detail to successfully teach you to tan a hide. I tan and teach home tanning for a living, and I regularly meet folks who have used this book as their reference and failed to produce anything remotely like leather. There is nothing inaccurate about the information but their just isn't enough detail. Tanning is a fairly simple craft, but it is very tactile and precise. You need to know the details, the ins and outs. Amazon.com sells two books that I highly recommend if you wish to learn home-tanning: DEERSKINS INTO BUCKSKINS: How to Tan With Natural Materials, and Wetscrape Braintan Buckskin. Get one or both and you'll get the results you're looking for.
