A definite recommendation, 09 Oct 2008
I would most definitely recommend this book to the new and excited knitter.
I had only been knitting for a week or two when I bought this book, and within days I had moved on from the plain and simple garter stitch to purling, ribbing, creating cables, forming shapes, increasing, decreasing and designing my own shapes.
The step-by-step instructions accompanied by pictures make the book a valuable addition to any knitting bag. Each new stage feels like a gradual step forward and takes away the fear of new stitches. What seems like an impossibility at first glance rapidly becomes a simple manoeuvre, and confidence grows with every accomplishment.
I often take this book to bed with me, just to find inspiration and rejoice in my new passion!
Easily the best book for beginners, 05 Oct 2008
I couldn't knit at all, so got hold of a few books. Of all the ones I tried, this was by far the easiest to follow, with the clearest instructions. It's also funny and down-to earth. I'd recommend getting a DVD as well, so that you can see what you're supposed to be doing. I got 'The Art of Knitting' which again, is clear. With the help of those two, I'm happily knitting now!
Tired old feminist politics, 09 Aug 2008
I thought we had left Ms Stoller's particular brand of political feminism behind back in the 1970s but sadly it would appear that she is stuck in the past and regurgitating the old, tired, strident politics and trying to tie them to a great craft. There are much better books on knitting around which do not find it necessary to bludgeon the reader with outdated politics on every page.
Great Re-Introduction for the Lapsed Knitter, 02 Jul 2008
I havent knit a stitch since I was ten years old, so I had completely forgotten everything about knitting. This book is a great re-introduction to the knitting basics and I found the diagrams and descriptions really easy to follow. The authors writing style includes lots of personal knitting experience stories which are inspirational and it also makes the book a good bedtime read too! I read the book on a Sunday night, its now Wednesday and i'm halfway through my first scarf, and thoroughly enjoying it!
Perfect for branching out, 26 Mar 2008
I knew the basics of knitting before I purchased this book but hadn't progressed beyond making stripey garter stitch scarves. This book was well suited to my needs, and I still go back to it for reference and to re-create my favourite designs. The introduction is interesting and provides an insight into the world of knitting as well as giving detailed technical instructions, with plenty of diagrams and photographs included along the way.
The patterns are perfect for a beginner - intermediate level knitter and the range of skills required are varied. There's everything from simple scarves and hats, to using circular needles, cabling, colourwork and socks. An experienced knitter might find this useful for the classic sweater patterns, but it is definitely intended for someone who is learning and getting to know the ropes. The book is clearly written and easy to understand. You'll be itching to get started on some of the beautiful projects and this is a great book to have in your collection.

Brilliant!, 07 Jan 2009
This book just arrived this morning and I can't put it down! I love the idea for making slippers for guests - I have hard floors and so it always feels unreasonable to ask guests to take off their shoes but now I will be able to offer slippers for them to wear.
This book will offer lots of new stimulating patterns/ideas for the experienced sewer (I was worried that I may have similar patterns in other books) as well as guiding the beginner. The photo's offer loads of inspiration too!
This book is perfect for gift ideas as well as making over rooms to turn a house into a home. Another great feature is that the patterns are full size. Only a couple need to be enlarged which is easily done with a photocopier.
Beautiful!, 26 Oct 2008
I ordered this book after already having the christmas addition but this one is certainly the best from the collection.
The ideas are inspiring and the photogrophy is gorgeous. I love it. Ive made a few items and the instructions are clear and straightforward.
Highly Recommended.
A real feast...but beware beginners!, 17 Oct 2008
Definitively a truly inspiring book, I have had the book for 3 weeks already made 2 projects out of it...but not quite for beginners as there are not many details provided for each project. Also, for the second project I had to make adjustments as the pattern provided (jumper for the teddy was just never going to fit!)was just not quite right.
Nevetheless, it made me sew again after a 5 year gap...
..., 21 Sep 2008
Best book bought for a long time...., 14 Sep 2008
The moment i received this book i could barely put it down for days, beautiful pictures and easy to follow, all the projects are items you would want to make! Have already tried two projects from the book and have not been disappointed with the result.

Refreshing!, 19 Dec 2008
Most books of this nature are targeted at either the beginner covering just the basics or they are quite advanced with complex patterns that require competent understanding. This book is great because it's a complete course in crochet! It assumes you are a beginner so it takes you through the basics and then gradually takes you through intermediate and more advanced patterns. I've known how to knit since I was a child but I've never tried crochet - it's a completely different craft and this book has been invaluable!
The book is modern, accessible and most importantly, easy to follow!! It's quite substantial and gives you a broad range of fashionable patterns to try out ranging from little projects (brooches, scarves, small bags ) to bigger ones (shrugs, sweaters, blankets). Start with one of the little projects - this book is great value and is sure to get you crocheting in no time! :)
Crochet Queen!, 17 Nov 2008
This was my first attempt at crocheting and I'm definately not a natural (took me a long time to pick it up and I'm still not great) but this book is excellent, the illustrations and descriptions are really clear. The designs are brilliant and really gave me the motivation to carry on with it (even when I was making a complete hash of it!) Would definately recommend this book to anyone wanting to take up the craft!
The Best!!, 08 Oct 2008
If you want to start crochet then this is the book to get. Every step explained clearly, instructions are simple yet comprehensive. Nothing boring though, as the writer's got a great sense of humour ! Also nice projects to practice your new skills
BRILLIANT!!!, 30 Jul 2008
I bought this after a recommendation from a friend. I had never ever crocheted before in my life and from buying the book on a thursday I was creating my first grannie square by tuesday.
If you read through the instructions slowly, you will soon pick up the knack of this fantastic craft - Im about to start the pattern for a flower scarf (only a week ago I thought Id never understand all the lingo and the diagrams, but again, Debbie makes it very easy to pick it all up).
Im totally obsessed by it now and would highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn from the beginning.
One thing - if you read a paragraph and dont totally understand it, re-read it and just take your time with the detail and it soon falls into place and starts to make sense.
Great for beginners, 04 Jun 2008
This is a terrific book for beginners, Debbie goes through all the basics in a easy and inspiring way. Some books presume that you already know which way to insert the hook, or pull through etc. Debbie takes you through all that like it's a piece of cake! I absolutley loved the book and still use it as a reference guide. Viva le DIY!

Gain confidence with jewellery making, 15 Nov 2008
With its attractive cover, I know you will pick this book up off the bookshop shelf if you are the least bit interested in jewellery making. From design ideas and inspiration, this book aims to take the jewellery maker through the whole process from start to finish. Comprehensive chapters include setting up a studio, materials, tools and techniques. Although it covers some of the same area as Elizabeth Olver's book Jewellery Making Techniques, the two books do not overlap too much and complement one another perfectly. The projects are laid out in easy to follow steps and the finished samples and steps are clearly photographed. You could easily use it as a week by week course. This practical book will be very useful to all jewellery makers. It's great value for money. This book would have been more rounded and complete if it had included more sources of inspiration and a good sources listing, however it does mention just a few magazines, books and website.
An absolute essential for all fledgling jewellery makers, 22 Oct 2008
Whilst the "Search Inside" option gave some indication as to the quality of this book, I was blown away by the sheer depth of information and guidance.
The book is split down into 34 units with 6 practical projects that cross reference with the techniques taught. The units take you through the complete process, from finding inspiration, evaluating & translating ideas through to transferring patterns, piercing, annealing, soldering, filing and many much more. Everything is laid out in an uncluttered fashion with lots of photos so you can be sure you are following correctly whilst the text is written at just the right level - neither patronizing or too advanced.
I must confess I am only a beginner so cannot really comment on what it offers those slightly more advanced, however it does seem to have so much information that even once my confidence and skill grows I'll still be referring back to this.
A beautiful, informative book that I would highly recommend to all would-be jewellery designers.
Beautiful!!!, 08 May 2008
This isn't so much a book as a labour of love. Beautifully presented, extremely clear photographs, high quality paper. It remains to be seen whether it can teach me how to make jewellery - if it can't that'll be down to me - but in any case it is a lovely book to own.

There are so many christmas crafts books which I have a look at and am, frankly, disappointed with. Not so this one! I'd say it has quite a folk art feel to it.

I bought this book just over a week ago and set about making one of the projects straight away. The book is lovely to look at (I spent hours just pondering the possibilities!) and is very clear and detailed. I made one of the necklaces tonight (couldn't wait for all the supplies to arrive!!) and although I couldn't get the exact beads in the make up of this necklace, my necklace looks just as good and I couldn't be more pleased.
Definitely a good first buy if you want to start out in making beaded jewellery. I've now got the bug and the possibilities, using this book alone, are endless!

I read the reviews written by others and they appeared positive so I gave it a go and bought this book. I was not diappointed it has got my imagination running riot. I would deinitely recommend it to any one interested in beading
All About Beads - Barbara Case, 23 Apr 2007
This book is an excellent resource for those wishing to design and make handcrafted jewellery. I have referred to the techniques and instructions time and again, and believe it to be one of the best reference books on the market. Filled with great illustrations, easy to follow step-by-step instructions, design ideas and crafty tips, this is a must have for everyone interested in making their own jewellery.
Great for learning beading techniques, 03 Nov 2006
This book is really nicely illustrated and the instructions clear, but the author tends to favour more traditional designs using french wire (gimp) and gold.
It does have some great explanations of the basic beading techniques though, so useful for any beader to have for reference.

:) Crochet Queen!, 17 Nov 2008
Also nice projects to practice your new skills BRILLIANT!!!, 30 Jul 2008
Ho Ho Ho ~ Get Sewing!, 21 Oct 2008
From the moment we opened the parcel and saw the super cover, my daughter and I were off.......Christmas is coming and the snowmen, angels and raindeer will be fat, colourful and hanging everywhere! A bumper christmas book..., 14 Sep 2008
I bought this together with the spring craft book, after purchasing the Sew Pretty Homestyle title and it easily lived up to my expectation. I have a problem though.......... what project to try first? and such little time before Christmas! Tone Finnanger is a star!, 12 Sep 2008
There are so many christmas crafts books which I have a look at and am, frankly, disappointed with. Not so this one! I'd say it has quite a folk art feel to it. All the projects are thoroughly and carefully explained - and they're inspiring. They don't seem overly complicated (I admit that I haven't made anything yet - am off to get some fabric on Monday!). There is a large patterns section so it's pretty hard to go wrong! I'll update the review once I've tried some of the projects - I'm not convinced they'll turn out as beautifully as the ones in the book, but half as good would still be thrilling! Superbook!, 25 Aug 2008
I totally agree with the other reviews so far: this book is absolutely amazing. Simple projects, but oh so cute and pretty. I know where I'm going to get my decoration from next Christmas! Absolutely recommended. FANTABULOUS!, 14 Aug 2008
I bought this book expecting the same old same old.. and was taken by suprise the moment I opened it. From the first page, the book had me hooked, and it just got better and better all the way through. Then to top it off, not just one cherry but dozens - were the patterns in the back of the book. There are patterns for everything you see in the book, all securely kept in the book, and all you do is trace them out. They are incredibly simple and easy to follow. This really is a treat of a book and I can highly recommend it for those who like doll type art, in a more Scandinavian folk type way. Crafting Springtime Gifts, 07 Nov 2008
What a lovely book, the projects are very well explained and has all the patterns. And it is full of beautiful things, I shall buy all the other books by this author. Lovely Gift Ideas, 16 Oct 2008
Go for this if you enjoy sewing it is a gem and you will not be disappointed if you like basic easy makes and sewing. If you are however a dressmaker or seamstress you may dislike some of the instructions, but do not let this cloud your choice as i said a gem for a craft library Happy Easter!, 31 Jul 2008
If you do not already celebrate Easter then this book is a great excuse to start! Beautiful projects which will be loved by both adults and children.Ideas include decorations, some of which I have made as Easter gifts.A lovely addition to any crafter's collection. Gorgeous!!!, 28 Feb 2008
This book is truly fabulous with some wonderful projects that will delight any home. A must buy .......... Beautiful book!, 20 Nov 2007
I love just looking through this book! There are beutiful pictures and great projects. Just love this book!! Fantastic first introduction to beaded jewellery, 31 Jan 2008
Brilliant, 06 Jan 2008

This truly is the only book you'll need to make (amongst other things) gorgeous jewellery, the technique descriptions are clear and easy to follow with both photographs, diagrams and written instructions.
Highly recommended! Great introduction to beading techniques, 23 Aug 2007
I bought this book as an intermediate beader after hearing many good words about it. And I do find it's a great book for beginners to learn new techniques from stringing to seed beading and wire crochet. Not a book for people looking for different projects, but exactly what it claims to be: an encyclopedia to use as reference for learing. A starting point for new beaders that I would recommend. Fantastic introduction, 07 Aug 2007
This was my first book about beading, and it gave me the courage to try the vast range of techniques shown. The information is set out clearly, and is well illustrated.
An inspirational gallery is included at the back - it will make you want to create something just as beautiful.
An absolute must for anyone wanting to know how and where to start with a few beads. Buy it. An Introduction to beading , 30 Apr 2007
Excellent general introduction to the many ways you can use beads.
Although the book covers a lot of different techniques, the instructions and illustrations are clear and easy to follow.
So if you are venturing into the field of beads, but not yet sure what you enjoy doing, you can experiment with the various techniques and then if you want to concentrate on just one, such as embroidery, you can go ahead and buy a more specific book.
It certainly helped me decide what I prefer doing. Great Book, 10 Mar 2006
Fab book. Shows you everything from textiles surface embellishment to jewellery design. Shows you all the equipment you need and gives you ideas for things you can do with a detailed step by step guide. Brilliant
