Clear Your Clutter!, 15 Apr 2008
This is a terrific book for people who need to be motivated to clear their clutter! Clutter removal is essential to rid your home or office of unwanted negative, stagnate energies. I'm a huge proponent of clearing clutter (and organizing the rest.)
Once your home or office is free from clutter, the next step--creating a sanctuary in your home and manifesting your desires--is easy.
So, if you overwhelmed with clutter, allow Karen to guide you!
Author of award winning book, Harmonious Environment: Beautify, Detoxify and Energize Your Life, Your Home and Your Planet
Not much information, 02 Dec 2007
After the glowing reviews others have left, I thought this book would be worth it's weight in gold, but was disappointed.
The main ideas can be summarised as follows:
1) Clutter drains your energy-- so you'd feel more energised if you didn't have clutter.
2) Things that you don't like or are ambivalent about also drain energy, so you should get rid of them without feeling bad about it.
3) All things that you own have an energy relationship with you, so the more unwanted stuff you have, the less energised you'll feel.
4) Clutter in your home can influence different areas of your life (Feng Shui Bagua) so if your work is going badly you should look at how the corresponding area looks in your house.
The rest of the book is just filler, where the author gives plenty of examples of how people have been inspired and how it has helped them change their lives. We also hear about the author's life in Bali, her colonics (one should also clear one's body and mind of unnecessary clutter), and how her handbag was the neatest a kid had seen when he rummaged through it.
Seemed a bit holier-than-thou.
In short: the booked is high on filler material and very low in actual content. It doesn't give any proper plan or encouragement or even information. The book seemed more like an advertisement for her other work with workshops, then the actual end product.
And to not clutter up my house more, I will happily give this book to the local charity shop.
Fabulous Little Book, 23 Nov 2007
I bought this book in 2007. It inspired me immediately and I bought several copies for friends and family. After visiting my cousin in Oct 2007 I sent her a copy too. She phoned me to thank me and said that she had only got to page 20 and was up, around and clearing.
Since that time I have also bought 'Sink Relfections' by Marla Cilly and by combining ideas from both of these I am making head way in my fight against My Clutter. I went off the boil a little while ago, but then picked up the books and off I was again.
Recently I was inspired to get rid of my old record collection, which I have been itending to copy to CD. However, the collection was over 200 strong and in my heart of hearts, I knew I would never get through all those, even if I did have a player to put them on. I sold some gave the rest to charity shops. It feels great. I realise now that there are many things in my life that are performing no useful function towards the life I intend for myself. My clutter has been preventing me from enjoying my life, so out it goes!
If at first you are not enamoured with this book, then please put it to one side and have a think about your clutter and how much time you spend on it, compared to how much time you really enjoy your life, then get the book out again and rethink.
Happy Clearing
I'm sorry but it didn't inspire me, 04 Jul 2007
I bought this book following on from all the rave reviews it got. Granted it gives practical advice and reasons for clearing clutter, it is well written and a convenient size so worthy of 4 stars, however, unlike the other reviewers, it did not inspire me to start clearing clutter which was the main reason I had bought this book in the first place.
Months later it is on my bookshelf along with How Clean is Your House, Life Laundry etc. Like most people who live in clutter I want to change and in desperation I searched Amazon for something that would actually inspire me and came across 'Sink Reflections'. Whilst the writing (very American) and references to God breezes can be a bit syrupy, the content actually works. After reading the opening chapters I got up and started clearing clutter with amazing results. Whilst Clearing Clutter with Feng Shui no doubt works for the vast majority, I found the quirky Sink Reflections gave me better inspiration and dramatic results in a short space of time.
100% wisdom, 23 Jun 2006
I bought this book after reading other reviews. I also bought the book Conquering Chronic Disorganization by Judith Kolberg. Judith's book has some very practical tips for organizing things. But Karen Kingston's book actually GETS you to get up and start sorting out your life.
My room was cluttered with things. I didn't even realise the effect it was having on me. Neither could I make the distinction between 'clutter' and items which I thought made my space look 'homely'. Now I have the perfect balance. I actually felt lighter after cleaning out my space. It took more courage than I thought to get rid of things which were no longer useful - but that courage will hopefully translate into an ability to do that in my every day life. You realise that holiding onto the past is only hiding the emptiness you have in your life.
This is also a topic Karen addresses - as she talks about clearing emotional and physical clutter towards the end of the book. Getting rid of flaky friends. Taking care of your body.
It's a truly all-encompassing book, which was refreshingly insightful. I am hesitant to lend it to anyone since I have read it several times already!

Easy fun with a beautiful end product, 08 Aug 2008
This book is addictive! I love knitting these blankets, the patterns are straightforward and you get a sense of accomplishment with every square created. The yarns are lovely to work with and the finished products are stunning. I cannot believe that I managed to finish three of these beautiful blankets as I have a rep for bags containing unfinished sweaters, but this method solves that one!
Lovely but lacking in advice, 07 Apr 2008
This is a beautiful book with wonderful (IMHO) patterns and ideas. The only problem I have encountered with it is the lack of instructions/advice on how to approach each square. I've done a reasonable amount of knitting, but not that much intasia/fairisle work so a few suggestions on which technique to use for which square would improve the book for me. But the designs are lovely and full of colour.
EXCELLENT!!, 04 Feb 2006
I too was anxious to get hold of this book, and waited eagerly for the post to arrive! I wasn't disappointed. It is truly a lovely and inspirational book. The colour and colour combinations were beautiful and the photographs detailed and excellent. I am a returner to knitting after 15 years but wasn't ever a very advanced knitter. But the instructions are very clear. There are lots of ideas that made me want to rush out and buy some wool to get started. And what more could you ask from a knitting book!!
A pleasure to open this book, 26 Jan 2006
Easy to follow charts and instructions, but please note that this book is identical to 100 Afghan Squares to Knit by Debbie Abrahams but with a different publisher (Trafalgar Square). Blankets and Throws to Knit is cheaper!
Highly Recommended As A Beginner, 08 Jan 2006
I'm new to knitting and wanted to try something other than jumpers and scarves. The designs in this book cover all ages and occasions with very clear detailed designs - each square has a close up photograph and a colour graph diagram. Each throw/blanket has a diagram showing the order of squares, clearly numbered. Throughout the book the yarns are Rowan but at the back is a guide for each yarn giving weight, length and fibre content so if you can't get the colour you need it's easy to look elsewhere or indeed if you want to buy the same kind of yarn from a cheaper producer. There's also a section on techniques, which is useful for beginners like me explaining intarsia knitting, knitting with beads and knitting with sequins to name but a few. Lastly there's conversion charts so UK/USA friendly.

Surprisingly well done, useful, readable reference, 01 Oct 2008
I love color in interior design but have never been a whiz at deciding whether this exact blue in conjunction with that exact red will give me this exact effect. McCloud's book ingeniously solves my problem by presenting beautifully simple double-page spreads dedicated each to a particular color scheme with explanation. There are sophisticated schemes based on variations on a single color, well-researched and amusingly explained period palettes, palettes for northern or southern exposures, neutral palettes, vibrant palettes, and probably some I'm forgetting. Possibilities range from pale eggshell sophistication to primary blue on red modern shock. Throughout, McCloud educates the reader about the history of color and its effect on the emotion, always with a light touch and never dipping into dullness. The color reproduction, as you'd expect, is perfect.
Erudite but also incredibly accessible, 06 Dec 2007
Warning: this book can become addictive. I've just been renovating a whole house and I spent so much time with my head in this book, friends started to tease me. It's beautiful, but it's also thoughtful and brilliantly creative. I can't believe some reviewers on here don't find it useful. McCloud covers so much, from every shade of each colour to period colours (like the 1930s palettes I ended up using) to colours for beach homes or cold climates or loft style apartments. In short, there is a wealth of knowledge in this book and it's written with the passion one has come to expect from McCloud. To those who find this book hard to use, what do you want Kevin to do, come round your house and choose the colours for you? Be creative, pick what you like and experiment. That's the whole idea of the book! I did and I've ended up using colour in a way that I never thought possible.
Recomended, 20 Apr 2006
Well put together. An interesting read as well as a useful reference in helping with colour choice.
Very pretty.. and pretty useless, 04 Feb 2005
This book is a very pretty book. It has lots of nice colours and pictures. But it is very hard to use & I don't feel I've learned much about how to use colour! And while the colours are very nice, perhaps one reason I still can't work out what colours go with what, is that there aren't many colours in here that I would actually use in my home. The style is very classic / seaside cottage and I'm more of an urban trendy sort of gal.
Too cool, 22 Jan 2005
Great if you have a house like some of the exotic examples in this book. Not so good if you don't. A little bit too cool for its own good I did not find this to be very user friendly. It is very hard to relate any of the examples to real world rooms - they are just all like show homes. It might suit some though, perhaps semi-pro interior designers.

One of the Best Interiors books by far....., 30 Sep 2008
A brilliant recent book full of beautiful photographs of french style interiors. Each chapter covers a basic tenet of the elements of french style..and yes, you have the usual, from paint colours to fabrics and furniture, BUT! what sets this apart, I feel, is the really up-to-the-minute feel of the interiors. Some books on french style are rather dated and their photos look as if they've been dragged out of some ancient archive. This one is different. There is a particular thread of style that runs through the book which I expect is specific to it's author Josephine Ryan. I believe she may have styled some of these photographs, and that is why they feel unique compared to the usual fare. She manages to avoid the cliches inherent in your average interiors book, but without losing any of the allure that makes something peculiarly french. Her style is quite spare, incredibly tasteful and very inspiring. Personally, I feel this is the best interiors book I own and I have a lot!

Any book by Suzanne Trocme is guaranteed to be outstanding and well worth the purchase price.
Unlike most books published on the subject of architecture, interiors, decoration or design, ST's books are extremely well written and full of useful and useable practical information and advice.
In addition, the illustrations and pictures perfectly compliment the always excellent text and are 'real' enough to make the reader feel they could create similar settings and interiors.
ST is an 'edgy' realistic and uncompromising writer who thoroughly understands her subject - unlike many other authors working in this genre.
I have bought every one of ST's books and thoroughly recomend them to any reader interested in this subject. They are excellnet value for money and will not dissapoint.

Perfect!, 27 Nov 2008
This is a lovely book. But it is more than just a 'lovely book', delightful though it is to look at and handle. Nor is it just a parade of 'aspirational' interiors beyond the pockets of most of us - though there are some pretty sensational houses here. It's more a celebration of English individuality - that you can do what you like with your own space - mad colour and piles of stuff if that's your bag; or restrained colour and pared down decor if that's what you want. To guide you, there's a gentle categorisation of the different types of English house and a neat summary of the essential elements of each. But there's nothing prescriptive here - and uniformity is told to take a running jump. The message, really, is have faith in what you love and surround yourself with that. All these interiors are totally at ease with themselves - not concerned with keeping up with anybody, or 'making a statement' - except to say: 'Welcome and enjoy'. Congratulations to Ros Byam Shaw for reminding us that in making a home, as in living our lives: 'To thine own self be true'.
Essential English, 21 Mar 2008
I'd vowed not to spend any more money on interiors books, but I just couldn't resist this one. It's delightful and inspiring. The interiors featured here are a welcome relief from the impersonal, 'hip hotel'-style designer rooms which fill most interiors magazines and estate agents' brochures these days. The personalities of the owners shine through.
Inspiring and practical, 01 Jun 2007
Ok I know this is just a pretty pictures, shallow kind of book and it's not going to change the world. But as far as these kinds of books go, I think this is a pretty good one. I wouldn't hesitate to give as a gift. The images are elegant and inspiring, the editorial is nicely written and not at all twee, and there are some good practical tips and supplier lists. All the houses used as examples are quite unique and eccentric, not "chocolate box" type houses. If you're debating whether to buy it - go ahead. It's satisfying, practical and inspiring.

Buy it @, 05 Nov 2008
Most inspirational Interior Design book I ever had, 22 Feb 2004
This book is a must have for interior design enthusiasts. It has amazing pictures as well as a strong editorial content. Each page is a delight. My best interior design book so far.
never a better one, 31 Oct 2003
if you are looking for a classic style without chinz and noise, you can't miss this book. it is for those who seriously want to achieve modern subtleness in classic interior.

Even after five years, this still remains one of the best foundation books for anyone interested in cabinetmaking.
A must for any newcomer to Furniture or Cabinet making, 04 Jan 2002
An excellent all round book with superb illustrations, tips and ideas for simple time saving jigs. Covering all aspects from design and wood selection to construction and finishing, this book is an essential addition to any shop.
