OK for a couple of months, 31 Aug 2008
A reasonably enjoyable book, although somewhat repetitive and at times rushed in terms of the "Owners" story. There are plenty of novel ideas for life in a dog's mind and enough clever one-liners to keep you smiling.
A good holiday book, that doesn't involve any thinking or concentrating and will undoubtedly strike a chord with any dog owners present or past.
So funny, 13 Jul 2008
This book made me laugh out loud so many times with tears streaming down me face. I have 2 dogs and can relate to their antics in this story. I am now reading it for a second time as it is so funny. Highly recommended.
Oh how I laughed!!, 08 May 2008
My partner is a fanatical dog person (we have three)& I bought this book for her as a stocking filler last Xmas, she is still to have the pleasure of reading it, but I had to read a chapter or two....just to see what it was like? Once I started I was hooked, I laughed out loud & had tears running down my face, I can relate to so many of the funny instances in this dogs life.......fantastically funny! Dog lover or not this will really bring a smile to your face.
Funny, even if you are a cat lover!, 04 Dec 2007
This book made me laugh out loud on a few occations. I wouldn't have minded, but as I was reading it when I was supposed to be working I got a few odd looks from my boss!
I am not a dog lover, but bought this book on a friends recommendation, but quickly found myself loving Blake.
The author states that most of Blake's antics came from true life experiences with his own dogs. I wonder if that includes the incident with the neighbour's "Thingie"?
Wonderful, humorous book, 13 Nov 2007
This little delight was something I perused in the book store and bought as a gift for a relative. I ended up reading it myself and buying eight more to give as Christmas gifts. It's charming and hysterically funny. I laughed so hard in bed reading it that I'd wake my husband. It's a gem!

Dog Lover Trap - What a waste, 17 Jan 2008
Don't fall for this one - - the pictures are completely amateurish, very expensive for what it turned out to be, I felt cheated; I wouldn't have bought it had I seen it in a store. May I just say the phrases ("uses") for a Lab are a mockery to your intelligence, no matter how much you like this breed!
Now I know what my Lab's for ...., 15 Nov 2007
An excellent book full of wonderful images showing the true nature of the Labrador Retriever. Humourous and cute, some of the captions even bring a lump to the throat ... you'll know the 'one' when you read it. A wonderful and relaxing read for the Labrador Lover and/or anyone who enjoys 'aaah'-ing at pictures of dogs doing what dogs do best.
Excellent !!!, 26 Nov 2006
This is a wonderful little book which captures the character traits of the best dog breed in world to a T. The photography is beautiful although a few of the 'poses' could have been given a little more thought rather than just taking snap shots. But they do not detract from the value this little book has. It cannot fail to bring a smile to your face whenever you open it up at whichever page and the accompanying comments are very clever. I have 2 wonderful labradors (a chocolate and a black ... hubby won't let me complete the set with a yellow lab tho!!!) and to see their breed captured on film in this way is a thorough treat and something I will always appreciate. Enjoy! :-D
Disappointing, 15 Aug 2006
As a dog lover I thought this book looked like a real winner. However, I was very disappointed with the content. I was going to give it as a gift but feel it just isn't entertaining enough.
The pictures could have been so much better.
Adorable, 17 Jul 2006
Aren't our pet dogs great? I got a puppy only a few months ago and absolutely adore her funny, entertaining antics. Guess that is why I also enjoy reading about the antics of other people's dogs as well. This book is basically a pictorial book of the incredibly adoring and amusing qualities of one of man's best friends, the Labrador; although there are also several pictures showing the not so adorable antics that Labs get up to as well - these in particular reminded me of the need for John Donoghue's well thought out 10 commandments of dog which I found in another book about a Labrador that I've also read recently called Shakespeare my Butt! which details some of the author's amusing trials and tribulations of bringing up his own Labrador puppy. When I read `101 Uses for a Lab' there were many pictures that made me shout out `yes, yes, that's exactly what Penny (my dog) does'. Fabulous!

Disappointing and lightweight, 18 Apr 2008
A little bit funny in places and an occasional insight but by and large poorly written and forgetable.
Feathery fun... and a little bit more., 02 Dec 2007
Like other reviewers here, I thought this book was very entertaining, hugely humerous, and very warmly written. It is not a soppy recollection of chicken tales, but an open and honest (yes, and funny - but how could a book about these fabulous birds fail to be funny?) look at how one man has had his life affected by his feathery pals.
Chapter 2 starts with the words: "The sort of chicken-keeping we were embarking on can be summed up in three words: 'twee' and 'middle class." And I read those words with recognition, not embarrassment. My two ex-Tesco hybrid waifs are currently strutting their stuff around our ill-prepared garden, and laying an average of 9 eggs a week between the two of them.
This book is for people like me. I have recently ordered 2 more copies of this for my newly chickenified friends. Why? Because of its honesty. Because of the little snippets of chicken care secrets. Because of the kindness in this book. Because it's worth its weight in eggy gold!
Laugh out loud funny -- and a few lessons to boot, 04 Sep 2007
I don't recommend reading this in bed next to a spouse who has to get up for an early commute. You could be laughing so hard, you may not be forgiven. I haven't had such a good time reading a book in I don't know how long... terrifically witty & many laugh-out-loud moments.
I agree with another reviewer who said this book can help you make up your mind about having chickens, as it gives the ups and downs and the no nonsense and the you've got to really want to do this kind of thing information woven into the humour. But I think there are quite a few good lessons to be learnd and chix health tips I'd not heard of before, so I'd recommend it also as a way to get some good chicken rearing information.
Eggcellent, 21 Apr 2006
My only criticsm of this book was that it was too short. It is an entertaining tale of keeping chickens, don't expect to learn to much from it for that I'd reccomend Storey's Guide to Raising Chickens but for those still wonderimg about weather to get chickens or not this will make your mind up.
Hen and the art of chicken maintenance, 30 May 2004
This was a really funny book, it had me laughing out loud all the way through but you would have to keep hens for it to be really relevant. A good read and I picked up a few bits of good adviceand felt I had learnt a little about chickens but not an information book.

Fabulous!

Non-stop laughs if you're smart enough to understand the jokes. Has jokes on circumsision, sex, childhood, holidays, and much more. Sorry to say I can only give it 5 stars. If you want to be the life of the party get this book!

It's a gem!
charming and entertaining for a small book, 19 Dec 2007
If you ever once had a cat or even live with a cat now you will love this book. Its quirky little drawings demonstrate perfectly what cats are like and the small annoying things cat do that once you read about in this book you will find cute again. Things like how they sit or attack the one piece of paper on your desk that you wanted to use or that weird indescribabal noise that they make every time a birds outside your window. I'd recommend this little book to any cat lover (or it make an excellent gift to a cat lover) because it will be one of the nicest presents you could give them and one of the cutest books about having a cat on your shelf.
For Cat Lovers Everywhere :), 09 May 2007
Anyone who has lived with cats will identify with this book. I've just moved away from home and have had to leave my cats with my Mum but I find just reading through this little gem makes missing them a little easier.
Purrrrrrfect ;)
A Book Like a Cat: Inexplicably Charming, 01 Apr 2007
It's a little hard to explain why I like this book, but it's engaging in a way that any close observer of cats will appreciate. If you aren't a dyed in the wool cat lover, you will probably be mystified by this book. But if you enjoy the company of cats, you'll find this cartoon collection to be something special.
The cartoons trace the daily activities of an Everycat named Misty, who does all the things cats usually do--climb into grocery bags, lick themsleves at awkward times in awkward places, knock things off of desks, hiss at vacuum cleaners, run around the house for no particular reason. There's no punchline as such to any of the cartoons, other than a purr and a warm sense of familiarity. It's a testimony to the artist's skill as an observer that he has done such an engaging job of capturing the essence of what makes cats so pleasing to those who love them.

Purrrrrrfect ;) A Book Like a Cat: Inexplicably Charming, 01 Apr 2007

It's a gem! Fun-packed in every sense, 08 Jan 2008
Every home should have this enormous volume of cartoons that span the decades. It's great for dipping into when you want a little lift, and need to be reminded that whatever happens, life is basically funny. It's great for getting the creative juices going too - as a writer, I have had some of my best ideas for stories from the one-liners in here. It's amazing value, and the only person who won't thank you for ordering it is the poor soul who has to deliver this weighty tome. New Yorker cartoons, 08 Apr 2006
If you enjoy witty and well drawn cartoons you can't help enjoying this book. It is a real feast of wit.You get a huge book with a selection of cartoons arranged chronically, and two discs with over 67 thousand cartoons on them. I haven't yet broached the discs, but they are apparently easy to access in a variety of ways. It would also make a really great gift for someone who loves the best cartoons. I have been waiting for this book for about forty years..., 25 Feb 2006
Long before I ever picked up a copy of "The New Yorker," I knew about the fact that it was a treasure trove of cartoons. My father had a hardcover collection of choice cartoons culled from the first four decades of the magazine's history and that was where I met the original Addams family drawn by "Chas. Addams," the twisted looks at the world of by William Steig, Peter Arno, Robert J. Day, Mischa Richter, and others whose names I would not learn until years later even though I could instantly recognize their artistic styles. Weaned on such wonders it is not surprisingly that when I pick up a copy of "The New Yorker" I instantly flip through the magazine to look at each and every cartoon before going to look at what is happening in New York City in terms of shows and other entertainment that we can only dream about up here in the Zenith City. "The Complete Cartoons of 'The New Yorker'" is edited by the magazine's cartoon editor Robert Mankoff, so blame him for any and all errors regarding the selection of the 2,004 (ha ha) cartoons selected, and with a Foreword by editor-in-chief David Remnick. There are also essays on the life and times (and humor) of each decade from the 1920's of James Thurber to the 2000's of Matthew Differ, written by the sort of eminent scribes you except to find in "The New Yorker," to wit: Roger Angell, Nancy Franklin, Lillian Ross, John Updike, Ian Frazier, Calvin Trillin, Mark Singer, and Rebecca Mead. But save those for after you have looked over the cartoons for each chapter, because then what they are talkinga bout will make more sense; then you can go back and look at the cartoons again to appreciate additional nuances. There is a lot of overlap between decades with these cartoonists because most of them stick around for decades, and why not? Is there a better gig for witty cartoons that "The New Yorker"? I suppose if there is such a thing as cultured (nee elitist) cartoons, this would be the place to find them, but this has certainly been a rich vein of humor for these talented artists to mine all these years. As you flip through this book you will find new favorites for each nine decades represents: Carl Rose and Gluyas Williams in the 1920s; Goerge Price and Alair in the 1930s; Garrett Price, Helen E. Hokinson, and Chon Day in the 1940s; Sydney Hoff and Robert J. Day in the 1950s; Saul Steinberg and William O'Brian in the 1960s; Joseph Mirachi, Henry Martin, Donald Reilly, and George Booth in the 1970s; Tom Cheney, Arnie Lewis, Edward Franscino in the 1980s; Robert Manhoff, Peter Steiner and Roz Chaast in the 1990s; and David Sipress, Alex Gregory, and Mick Stevens in what has passed for the 2000's to date. The book includes two CDs have all 68,647 cartoons ever published in "The New Yorker" (okay, published in "The New Yorker" up to that moment in the history of the universe, because already this thing is outdated). The CDs are browsable by date, subject, and cartoonist and while the resolution is not the greatest in the world, I was not that unhappy with it (but I am too lazy to change my out of date perscription for my eye glasses, so take that with a grain of salt). Anyhow, if you are in the Halloween spirit you can check out those cartoons this week or just go straight to the Addams collection like most people will do. The hard part is not to just sit in front of your computer and spend a hour or two short of 12 days to look at all of these cartoons (averaging one every 15 seconds), but you have to learn to ration these little treasures out. Besides, I am still trying to find my favorite one: a group of professors stand in front of a blackboard totally filled with the most complex formula in the history of the world and one of them finds where they went wrong: making a simple error in multiplication. Back to the hunt!
very very funny, 02 Dec 2005
huge volume - i had hours of fun! the cartoons on the cd are in .pdf format - so you won't be able to view them as a slideshow of screensaver - unless there is some way of extracting the images and saving them as .jpg files - i'm tempted to look into it. Still giving it 5 stars as the book is great.
We are amused, 29 Apr 2005
Mindful of several reviews (on US Amazon)that panned the quality of the cartoons on the two CDs I decided to use an Amazon Marketplace Seller and got this huge book (new and still shrink-wrapped from Caiman in Florida) at a good price. As to the quality of the CD cartoons on my screen, no problem. The default seems to be fifty-two percent of the original and there is the option to make them any size if you want to, the captions come out black and are perfectly readable. I really didn't expect more than sixty-eight thousand cartoons to be of pristine quality unless the originals were scanned and this would obviously make copyright problems, so I am quite happy with what I see on screen.
As it is I have a wonderful (handsomely designed and printed) book of cartoons and the option to see, on the CDs, all the work of my favorites, Charles Saxon, Robert Weber, Sam Gross, Chon Day and Bill Hamilton's brilliant work about the goings-on in the financial world. A bargain!
