A Great Book!, 07 Nov 2008
Dont be put off by the fact that they make a few mistakes, its obvious that this will happen in a book this size.
OK, so maybe it could be updated but this will only annoy real hardcore freaks.
My girlfriend and I are big fans of Marvel and still, almost a year on, flick through it every few day, learning something new everytime!
Great present for any comic book fan!
brill, 29 Mar 2008
wonderful book easy to read great artwork everything you need to know and didnt know wow
Excellent resource for the serious fan, 17 May 2007
I've been wanting to buy this for some time. It's relatively expensive and I didn't know if it justified the money.
One day, I bought it on a whim and all I can say is that I haven't regretted it a bit!
The book is quite extensive, covering hundreds of characters. There are some errors, but that's understandable on such wide-ranging tome. The art is great, obviously.
This made me remember characters from stories I read decades ago, that were long forgotten. Awesome.
DO NOT BOTHER WITH THIS PIECE OF CRAP, 07 Oct 2006
Just bought the Marvel Encyclopedia, after reading the DC Encyclopedia and the OHOTMU and what can I say other than it was a waste of money. There are numorous inaccuracies in his book, like mistaking Captain Britain for Maelstorm and Jean Grey for Emma Frost. Most of the Marvel entries have not been updated despite the fact that some of the most important Marvel story line happend in the last year like the House of M. For example, Emma Frost's occupation is listed as Headmistress of the Massachusetts Academy. She's been with the X-Men for a considerable time now. According to the Encyclopedia, she is teaching Generation X. There is no mention of her relationship with Cyclops or the fact that she has a secondary mutation that allows her to turn to a diamond form. Anyone reading the Encyclopedia to get caught up on the Marvel U is going to be in for a surprise when they pick up the comics.
You'd be better off picking up the OHOTMU or the new updates which are out in comic stores.
Great, now I have to buy the DC Encyclopedia too!, 06 Oct 2006
I've been waiting for this to come out for quite some time and I haven't been dissappointed.
To compress very-nearly 50 years of history and continuity into a managable volume was always going to be a struggle, but I think the contributors have just about pulled it off. Granted, some of the characters' histories feel a little too compressed, with the editors obviously concentrating on the origins of each character rather than the ensuing adventures. This of course makes complete sense, unless you want the book to be 10,000 pages long!
Overall a damn fine effort that should reside on every comic book fans' coffee table.
Like the title of this review says, I now have the hankering to buy the DC edition of this series, which is probably the best review this book could have...

Hubby is very happy!, 05 Nov 2008
I bought this book for my husband who is a comic fan. As soon as he opened it I knew he loved it. I was very impressed with the colours, information and pictures. Its going to take him months to get through it but its one of the best presents i have ever got him and highly recommend it. I spent a long time trying to decide on the best book and this is it!
It's a cracker!, 21 Aug 2008
The minute you pick the book up you just know you're in for a treat. It's big. It's heavy. And it's home to every super-powered DC character you can think of - and then some. It bulges with page after page of drop-dead gorgeous artwork, and (perhaps surprisingly) information about many of the heroes and villains that you won't even find in the pages of Wiki.
This mighty tome has to be one of the most definitive pieces of work about the occupants of the DC universe ever.
It's hard to imagine how any collection can be complete without it.
wonderful, 29 Mar 2008
this book is amazing a real comicbook fans dream been wanting this book for a while its brillant well worth buying also bought marvel as well
Useful and informative, 07 Feb 2008
Including hundreds of heroes and villains from the DC Universe as well as short entries for important places, events and equipment, the DC Comics Encyclopaedia is a book that would be useful for both those new to DC's comics as well as those who have read them for years.
Having been published in 2004 this book is currently somewhat out of date but this is only to be expected with a book focussing on something with an ever expanding universe. As someone relatively new to the world of DC I have found this book invaluable as a place to look for information on characters that I come across who I know little to nothing about. Many of the entries in this book are rather short but they are all informative including a brief biography and a picture of the character detailed. The book could do with some proof reading in places but overall this is a well researched and informative encyclopaedia.
The DC encyclopedia of wonders!, 11 Feb 2006
I am mad about comics, but only knew about marvel comics and i was desparate to find out about DC.i saw the DC encyclopedia on amazon and i got it for my 12th birthday.I was amazed by all the infomation in it!I have learned a great deal from it and found my new favorite super team, the teen titans. It also includeds many of DC's famous super heros like the flash, wonder woman, batman and superman. It runs down through the alphabet listing the famous and infamous of DC's charicters. It is a must have for comic fans and i strongly recomend it.Excelsior and happy reading!

Garfield still stands the test of time today as most of us share an afinity with his loathing of Mondays, dieting etc. There's a diverse group of characters and although some themes do get repeated it's always in a different and original way. The humour is spot on and always puts me in a good mood, never mind the words some of the facial expressions are hilarious. Quick and simple to read, everyone should own at least one of the books in this collection. Garfield - the worlds best cat, 16 Jan 2004
Garfield comic strips are the best I have ever read and never fail to make me laugh and smile how ever many times I read them. This collection of classic Garfield is absolutley brilliant and it is a very reasonable price considering the enjoyment you can get out of it. Awesome cat. Awesome book. Buy it now. Don't stop here.... buy the lot!, 25 Apr 2002
The Garfield Classics range is so hilarious, you definitely will not want to stop with just one edition. The subject matter does recurr a lot (eg. Mondays, Diets, Obiesety, Vets etc) but it's amazing how, even today, Jim Davies creates such amusing cartoons! If your sense of humour includes pushing dogs off tables, mailing kittens to Abu Dhabi and the acceptance of lazyness - you've come to the right place.
Incredible, as always., 23 Jan 2002
Even by Garfield's hilarious standards, this is just incredible! I couldn;'t stop laughing! I had to hide it from my parents because my cackling snorts were keeping then awake at night!
Laughter factor = Excellent!, 23 Dec 2001
Be prepared to laugh with the antics of Garfield! Just about anything and everything can happen in this volume. I couldn't put it down until the end. Garfield will always make you smile or laugh! Don't miss out on this book! :)

It's hard to imagine how any collection can be complete without it. wonderful, 29 Mar 2008
this book is amazing a real comicbook fans dream been wanting this book for a while its brillant well worth buying also bought marvel as well Useful and informative, 07 Feb 2008
Cat-tastic, 23 Mar 2008

I have a big collection of Mr.Bean stuffs

It was great!!!!, 21 Feb 1998
I like this book because it has almost all those famous cartoons that you can barely get off the web.
The King of Toilet Humour, 22 Aug 2004
There's no doubt that this is one of the funniest, rudest cartoon books you'll ever read. It makes Viz look like a copy of Mandy. Although I expected a collection of jokes about poo, it's actually much more clever than that with a complete history of poo through the years (find out how the dinosaurs REALLY became extinct), poo as a beaty aid, poo in the movies and so much more you won't believe it! The text is witty and extremely clever and just about every cartoon made me cry with laughter. Look out for the Deila Smith inspired 'How to Bake the Perfect Poo' featuring a picture of the finished meal! Gross but brilliant!

The book is quite extensive, covering hundreds of characters. There are some errors, but that's understandable on such wide-ranging tome. The art is great, obviously.
This made me remember characters from stories I read decades ago, that were long forgotten. Awesome.

Absolutely stunning book, 30 Apr 2008
This is the first book I have bought on Amazon that I have felt utterly compelled to write a review for.
I received this book today and read it about an hour ago, I have to say it is absolutely incredible. I have been into panel cartoons since I was a kid (The Far Side, Calvin And Hobbes, Garfield) and I have been meaning to get hold of one of the Life In Hell books for a few months now, ever since I heard about them (I am a huge Simpsons fan).
Matt Groenings humour is like no other, this book made me laugh like a maniac (literally, as soon as I realised I was laughing so loud I stopped as to not alert my housemates) and it also made me cry like a baby, when I finished it I welled up and cried for the first time in months. I'm a 23 year old male by the way, but not ashamed of being moved by such a sterling work of cartoon art.
I recommend this book to anyone who misses being a child, and everyone who had an unconventional childhood or whose parents split up, also fans of the Simpsons will clearly get along well with this.
The book is full of witty observations, heartbreaking truths; laugh out loud childishness and above all; human nature. Groening is a true genius and as soon as I post this review, I'm going to buy another Life In Hell book, then another, and then another... until I have them all!
35 year old childhood memories brought back to life, 10 Jul 1999

my first self-help book with fabulous sense of humor, 01 Jan 1999
I first bought this book in the eight grade and Matt Groening's wry humor got me to understand that I wasn't the only kid with these problems; and that when you think about it, it's all pretty funny. I still have have my original copy and evey other "Life is Hell" book. An early fan has become a life-long fan! EXCELLENT! :)

It's hard to imagine how any collection can be complete without it. wonderful, 29 Mar 2008
this book is amazing a real comicbook fans dream been wanting this book for a while its brillant well worth buying also bought marvel as well Useful and informative, 07 Feb 2008

This book in the life is hell series is a great parady of childhood.I am 40 years old and this book brought back memories I forgot that I ever had of being a kid.Every page is full of #%&@s and giggles!!If you are a fan of kids and old memories of childhood past? you will enjoy every page of this Mat Groening satire.
my first self-help book with fabulous sense of humor, 01 Jan 1999
I first bought this book in the eight grade and Matt Groening's wry humor got me to understand that I wasn't the only kid with these problems; and that when you think about it, it's all pretty funny. I still have have my original copy and evey other "Life is Hell" book. An early fan has become a life-long fan! EXCELLENT! :)
