This book contains at least two of the all time great pieces of Baseball writing. 1) Farrell's descripion of the meeting between Schalk and Campenella and 2) his visit to a player's boarding house in Chicago.
The comparision between the life of ball players in the pre-WWII period and that in the late 20th century is clear. Read Farrell's accounts then skip forward to read "Ball Four" and "Season's In Hell".
