Life enhancing, 10 Oct 2008
The previous reviewer seems to be referring to another CD by Jon Kabat-Zinn. This CD set has 4 CD's, Bodyscan Meditation, Mindful Yoga, Sitting Meditation and Mindful Yoga 2. This CD forms the basis of the 8 week Mindfulness course developed by Jon Kabat Zinn and adapted by Mark Williams and others to run in the UK. The Bodyscan and the Sitting Meditation are the ones I use the most so far they form the bedrock for Mindfulness as put forward by Jon Kabat Zinn. I use them regularly and learn something about myself and Mindfulness every time I listen to the CD's. Jon Kabat-Zinn is the best teacher of Mindfulness I have found he talks total sense backed up by a scientific background and years of running courses on Mindfulness in hospitals and medical centres across America. If you want to considerably enhance your life get this CD and listen to it regularly for a month or so and see what affect it has. I am a counsellor and use Mindfulness in my work as it makes so much sense in helping us be more aware of our thoughts and skills to be able to come back into the present moment and be present with our experience whatever that may be.
A Very Good Beginners Guide., 26 Oct 2007
This audiobook consists of two CDs. The first is the author talking about meditation, and this CD is wonderful to listen to. He has a really nice voice to listen to and talks as if he is just talking to you alone. He makes if feel as if Meditation is available to everyone, and anyone can do this, which is true, but so helpful to a beginner to be reassured that it is within their reach. The second CD is a set of progressive meditations, quite short, but each one taking you a stage further on. I found them really helpful to work through, as it got me to a stage where I could continue alone. I am a beginner at this but have found this audiobook very helpful and I do actually find it works. If you want to begin Meditation and find the market is too flooded with all kinds of books and methods, then start here with this audiobook. It will guide you through a no-nonsense method, and you can then follow-up any other methods you choose afterwards, when you know what it is about and what it can do for you.

ANGEL THERAPY DOREEN VIRTUE, 13 Nov 2008
If I had to buy just one of these types of CDs then I would get this one. Whether you are a novice or more advanced, this is one to buy. You choose at the beggining of the meditation what you need to focus on or work on, or approach it to the whole of your life. Brilliant.
Fantastic, 24 Oct 2008
This is a wonderful meditation, I have all of Doreens Oracle Card decks, a lot of her meditations and books, this Cd takes me back to when I went to her Healing with the Angels Seminar last year, it almost felt like I was back there. She gathers all the Archangels together to give you a cleansing that can be topic specific which you can change during the meditation or general, you can cut cords that are spent allowing you to keep the love that relationships and friendships are born on. To me this is a very special meditational CD and very powerful. Brilliant work, thank you Doreen.

Excellent Book, 09 Feb 2008
I found this book extremely helpful and recommend it to everyone wishing to develop their psychic skills which we are all born with. Most of us just don't realise that they have these skills. But there is a reason why I have only given it four stars instead of the deserved five. This reason is that, although clear instructions are given as to how to enter your Basic Psychic Level, it wasn't clear how to come out of it again. Because the differences between your brain's normal operating level and the Basic Psychic Level are very subtle, I feel that without knowing whether or not you have come back out of it, you would wonder whether you are back to normal or wheher you could unknowingly spend the rest of the day walking round in your slightly altered state!!!
That, though, is the only complaint that I have and that is not really a complaint, just a comment. A superb book aimed mainly at beginners, that gives remarkably quick results, as has been the case with me. Strongly recommended.
Inspirational, 12 Dec 2006
This book is very precise ,it's not heavy ,and you begin to see results fast. I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in psychic studies. Unlike what the reader below stated this book gives you a clear insight into the psychic realm and has stories from the author's personal life that puts the exercises into context. It's interesting and it's an easy read.Very Good.
Positive Thinking?, 09 Sep 2006
I think the essence of this book is indoctrinating people into thinking positively and thus effecting positive change in their lives and then getting them to believe it was their innate psychic ability that actually effected the change when in reality it was probably just coincidence or their determination and belief that they could achieve more with their lives.
I am not convinced that the author isn't a charlatan out to make some easy money by preaching to the gullible.
Some of his personal experiences are laughable: for example psychically moving cars on the highway. Apart from anything else this is a waste of pyschic power but perhaps the rearview mirror image of some loon bearing down on the drivers in front at 80 mph caused the drivers to pull over?
I could probably replicate this psychic exercise by driving fast behind someone in a lane. Except if I did it, it would be called tail-gaiting!
Contrary to the impression I might give here I am not cynical about esoteric areas. I have had some strange experiences with astral projection but something feels phony about Mr Hewitt. I just don't feel like he is telling the truth and to be honest I found a lot of his experiences very boring to read.
Why should the reader care about his experiences when all we want to know is how to develop our own pyschic awareness?
He keeps saying we should be able to do great things from our basic pyschic level but to get there is only a matter of a simple visualisation exercise.
What you get for your money is a couple of visualisation exercises and some minor references to other esoteric areas.
If anyone can make Brad Pitt or Scarlett Johansson fall in love with them after reading this book and practising the exercises I'll gladly change my opinion but until then I'm not convinced.
it works and quickly, 20 Apr 2006
i like this book it is the second hewitt book i have bought and boath are clear concise and helpfull.i got the book a wile ago and since i started reading it ive had a more positive outlook and my abilities have increaced threefold. it has clear tecniques and some case studys it's all to the point.the book is mainly the exercises and case studys very little useless theory.not bad for a book marketed as new age
Straight Forward!!!, 21 Jul 2004
I am finding this book fantastic to read as it is very straight forward and to the point. The author is a real decent person who I could easily relate to. The book focuses on awakening your psychic awareness with exercises to guide you. Also he tells you stories relating to the exercises in order to make you understand the meaning a lot better. The only reason why I bought the book in the first place is because I found the previous reviews to be very helpful. I would reccomend this book to anyone who knows they have got to develop their skills.

I had tried learning to meditate through books alone and struggled badly. I found the CD that comes with this book an excellent way to get into meditation - the tone of voice used is so soothing.
The book adds so much more background and helpful information to assist and guide meditation.
I would not hesitate in recommending this to anyone interested in starting meditation. A lifesaver., 09 Mar 2006
About six months ago I was under significant stress due to work and postgraduate course pressures. I wasn’t coping and life was really getting to me. So after reading a magazine article on meditation I decided to give it a go and purchased the Insight Meditation Kit. Through the use of the kit and dedicated practice I have managed to gain control of my emotions. Though the work/course pressure is now off I still find meditation invaluable. I can now cope with many difficult situations without becoming flustered or stressed and feel generally more relaxed. “Insight Meditiation” is the only meditation course I have tried so I can’t compare it with others but I would highly recommend it.
Excellent guide to meditation!, 24 Feb 2006
I have found this pack to be a complete life saver over the last year. I have read through the whole book at least twice and read selected chapters over and over where they are particularly relevant and/or helpful. The CD has some excellent meditation sessions contained on it and the extras provided in this kit were such helpful reminders of the key points. When I feel I need to just sit and chill for half an hour, this is the first thing I turn to... and if things start to get on top of me, I recall some of the pearls of wisdom and things start to calm down and return to their proper perspective. I've not only recommended the pack to numerous other people, I have also bought it as a present. I would highly recommend it to anyone!
Two Words - Life Changing, 05 Sep 2005
I have been involved in the art of meditation for some 26 years now and I have studied many different approaches to this ancient art such as those made famous by Gwing Zhu, Xiang Lou and even the surprisingly accurate yet simple beliefs of the Western shaman Gary Daniels. It is hard to believe that there could be, in this day and age, another book so delightfully straight-forward in its approach yet at the same time, delving into the complexities that many modern day texts on meditation tend to steer away from. It is this complete and utter dedication to the cause that Goldstein & Salzberg (both relatively unheard of before 'Insight...' apart from their work with Ethiopian children in Africa in the 80's) show throughout, that will excel this book into the A-Grade list of Modern day meditation texts. Though some more advanced readers may find the style of writing somewhat patronising, as if the authors were aloof from the subject (though I can assure you having met both authors in Africa that this was certainly not their intention), it quickly becomes clear that they have an astute knowledge of their subject matter, so much so one could say, that they might even rival the late great Xylon Xuo Ping BBHS (Blessed Be His Soul). One does not necessarily gain all that another may do in reading this book, indeed my second cousin thought the book was a tad nefarious - which is reflected in the comments made by Foo Jit Su in Chapter 4 of his self titled debut text - although I must stress that there is so much more to be gained (in the metaphysical sense at least) than the average reader may at first believe. In conclusion, I would not directly recommend this book to those who are not prepared to unlearn what society has had them learn, especially without knowing your previous meditation history - for example those more akin to the teachings of To Shi Bah would be more at ease with, say, William Bailey's more conservative writings in 'Emotions and Emoticons: The truth behind Meditation' than they would be with 'Insight...'. If you are, on the other hand, eager to go beyond the common belief structure and push the boundaries of spiritual enlightenment - this is the title for you.
Great for new starts!, 05 Nov 2004
As someone who was interested in meditation this book provided me to actually try and suceed in meditation, when doing the exercices in the book you feel calm and fell alot better afer meditation. (for all religions) I found it really good personally as it helped me get away from my busy life style.

(for all religions) I found it really good personally as it helped me get away from my busy life style.
if you are interested in Yoga you MUST read this book, 24 Nov 2007
yes you really must - and if you find yourself in Santa Monica seek out the man himself for a yoga class. You will not regret it. I bought that book more than 10 years ago and I still refer to it. It has inspired me to do yoga - daily! Also excellent section on simple meditation techniques.
Yoga from the Heart, 08 Dec 2006
What endears American Yogi Erich Schiffmann to the hearts of millions of Yoga students worldwide, causing them to speak so fondly of this man they have never met? Read this book to find the simple answer to this question that evades my words.
With an unmatched level of sincerity, Erich Schiffmann explores Yoga beyond the mere shape of its postures, challenging the reader to explore the inner aspects with effortless instruction in plain yet inspiring language. Far from being "just another Asana book", Erich shows us the way to turn each step, each movement, every moment of our lives towards an authentic Yoga practice.
A rich explanation of hatha yoga to read and re-read., 03 Jan 2002
This book was one of the first hatha yoga books I bought and it continues to delight and inspire me. In the Introduction, Eric Schiffmann describes his own yoga journey and the development of his personal yoga, which few teachers explain. Then the book goes into the reasons for practicing yoga in all its facets - the principles behind it, the breathing, ways of meditating and, most helpful of all, extremely detailed explanations of the asanas, including breaking some down into achievable stages. The photographs are large enough to be useful when practising too. There are practice routines at the back that I still turn to five years later. My only very minor criticism is that an index of both English and (anglicised) Sanskrit names would have been useful. And I'd like to know when he's going to write another book!
What a lovely book, 11 Nov 2001
This book is great. If you are looking for a yoga book to provide you with clear, understandable information on this vast subject then this book is a very good choice. Unlike some books, you feel very secure with mr schiffmann, and are confident that this book is 'from the horses mouth' and that he really knows what he is talking about. At the start,he explains his personal yoga journey, which I found interesting, before going on to show and explain a whole variety of yoga asanas, breathing and meditation exericses. The pictures, although black and white, are very clear and peaceful. He explains the exercises with step by step instructions and phases, so you can work upon a posture and build up to doing the full version. He also explains the benefits of each exercise in a little section following each one. This book is very readable. It has a very easy style, and everything looks calm and in control, unlike B.K.S Iyengars Light on Yoga, when he looks very strained and likely to cause himself an injury at any moment! This book inspires confidence. You get the feeling that this is the book that will lead you to the state of quiet inner contentment that Yoga is meant to be all about, where you not only will have a fantastic lean and supple body so you exude outer confidance, but it will also help to condition your mind and help you to be happy from the inside out. Wonderful, uplifting book.
the best yoga book ever published!!!, 23 Feb 2001
There are yoga books being published every day, and most of them are not worth the paper they are printed on. This one is special! I bought this book a few years ago when I first started doing yoga, and even though I have bought many many yoga titles since (including 'the tree of yoga', 'light on yoga' and John Scott's "ashtanga manual" which are also excellent), this is my favourite that I keep dipping in and out of. It quite simply is a very inspiring and informative read! Suitable for a complete beginner and an experienced student, or even just for the curious who want to know just what is this thing called yoga? In fact if you ever find yourself in LA seek out Erich Schiffmann (he teaches at yogaworks, santa monica) as he is a remarkable teacher. (His classes are not geared for complete beginners) And if you are used to practising Ashtanga or a similarly 'dynamic' form of yoga prepare to be surprised... All is not what it seems!

Just what I needed, 19 Mar 2008

Monotheistic Dominance, 12 May 2008
The usual monotheistic dominance: a single all knowing god. I've spent a lifetime trying to get away from people who want a monotheistic god - who just happens to be what they want him / her to be. I don't mind people wanting this - but Kelly could put that on the cover and I will happily steer clear. But (as usual) the assumption seems to be that everyone will believe and want what Kelly believes. I guess my starting point is to say I have beliefs and it is very unlikely that they will be other people's. I think that mediation / self hypnosis has something to offer people who are different to me. I can respect how they are and what they believe. If only Kelly and Christians were capable of the same.
Powerful stuff!, 18 Apr 2008
I bought this Kelly Howell CD about a month ago and have been listening every night since Easter. I recently received an unexpected amount of money which came at the perfect moment! Coincedence or manifestation? I like to think it's the result of listening to this CD - aligning myself with the abundance of the Universe!!
A great audio CD , 18 Nov 2007
I've been listening to Kelly Howell for years and have loved just about all of her audio CD's. I came across 'The Secret' book awhile back and watched the DVD too. It wasn't until later that I bought 'The Secret Meditation', and by adding 'The Secret' into it, it's amazing. A wonderful and soothing audio CD that I highly recommend, and a book I highly recommend is Understanding: Train of Thought.

(for all religions) I found it really good personally as it helped me get away from my busy life style.
if you are interested in Yoga you MUST read this book, 24 Nov 2007
yes you really must - and if you find yourself in Santa Monica seek out the man himself for a yoga class.
ABSOLUTELY GENUINE, 22 Oct 2008
The reviewer who states that this is not genuine yoga nidra is seriously misinformed. The text that Janakananda uses is actually from Swami Satyananda Saraswati's original work on the subject!!! (Satyananda is responsible for innovating the technique from an amalgamation of practices from ancient tantric texts in the middle of the last century. His book is cheap, called "Yoga Nidra" and available from Amazon if you wish to check the authenticity of the text used on the CD)
At no time does Satyananda recommend focusing on the heart chakra for a protracted period - this is only done with Ajna chakra. There are very sound reasons for this which the reviewer would know if he were as knowledgable as he would like to think he is.
I have only given 4 stars because, given the amount of variety available in yoga nidra texts (Satyananda provides 5 texts but each has alternative pieces appended, putting the total possible from his book alone into double figures)it is well nigh impossible to record one that will suit everybody. In this text I don't like the way the chakras are treated, but it may be a way that's ideal for you. Even so, I have used this GENUINE yoga nidra text to good effect many times, and I'm sure that it will serve as an excellent introduction to the subject for anyone who simply wants to experience very deep relaxation (EEG readings show brainwaves associated with deep sleep exhibited by yoga nidra practitioners who are wide awake!)or the serious yoga/tantra student looking to extend their practice.
Swami Rama (mentioned in the negative review) was an advanced yogi who probably developed his own form of yoga nidra to suit his own needs, as most people will who wish to gain the full benefit of the practice. Until we are as accomplished as him we are better sticking with the instructions of the original master.

This cd really helps me at times when I know Im a bit irritable or may be unwell and can't get comfortable or just can't get to sleep- I pull this out and soon find comfort and bodily peace.
A wonderful aid to relaxation, 11 Jun 2008
I can't claim to be an expert in the tradition and practice of yoga nidra so I will bow to more advanced and knowledgeable practitioners as to the validity of the execution of this CD.
But properly executed in the traditional sense or not, I must recommend this to anyone who suffers from stress, anxiety, sleeping difficulties etc. I use this CD regularly before I go to bed and have found it to be a marvellous aid to getting a restful, peaceful night's sleep. The more that I use this, the better and more peaceful the effects are.
All my friends who have borrowed this have found it to be just as helpful and it is my first port of call when tense or when worries are affecting my sleep.
Perhaps the style may not suit all, but it has truly given me a tool to help me relax and switch off disruptive inner dialogue.
More fantasy journey than yoga nidra, 27 Aug 2007
Yoga nidra means yogic sleep, a state of mind where you are in a deep sleep state and at the same time awake and aware that you are sleeping. With all due respects to Janakananda I don't think he accomplies this on his CD.
According to Swami Rama, and I consider him a far more experienced and advanced yogi, the real yoga nidra requires concentration on the heart center after some 'warm-up' excercises', because the heart center is the center of deep (dreamless) sleep. And it requires quietness around you. Something that's not on this socalled yoga nidra where the voice speaks all the time, and when the concentrationpoint is on a postulated "golden egg" in the middle of the brain.
I have done this excercise many times over the years, and I have to say I've come to find it a rather confusing mixture of genuine yoga nidra related practises like mentally contacting various parts of the body, and working with the seed mantras traditionally associalted with the chakras in yoga and tantra on the one hand. And on the other hand some fantasy journeys, walking in a wood, contacting different animals etc. that has absolutely nothing to do you with yoga, and come from a totally different tradition.
In true yoga nidra you give yourself up and let things happen spontaneously, while Janakananda forces and manipulates you in to feeling this golden egg, something that has nothing to do with genuine meditation, that is always a state beyond the verbal mind.
The best about this CD is Roop Vermas beautiful music.
Might be good relaxation, but it's not genuine yoga nidra.
Highly relaxing, 14 Mar 2007
"Nidra" in Sanskrit means "sleep" or "slumber," which is the closest experience to the state we experience in hypnosis and deep meditation as described on this CD. In Indian psychology, we have three states of awareness.
The first is waking consciousness called "jagrat," where our awareness is conditioned by time and space. The conscious mind predominates in this state.
The second state is dreaming conscious called "svapna." This is the state where dreams and visions occur. The subconscious mind holds sway here. Hypnotic states with focus and full attention are possible here.
The third state is of dreamless sleep, which is deep sleep without any disturbance from dreams. This deep relaxation is "nidra," where higher consciousness allows tensions and residues from thought impressions ("samskaras")to be released. Technically there is a fourth transcendental state called "turiya" but that is far too complex to explain here.
You do feel rejuvenated after the CD. I highly recommend this CD along with a fascinating novel that also works at a deep psychological and spiritual level called "Nexus" by Deborah Morrison & Arvind Singh. I read this novel along with the "Yoga Nidra Meditation" and have found both to complement each other.

If anyone can make Brad Pitt or Scarlett Johansson fall in love with them after reading this book and practising the exercises I'll gladly change my opinion but until then I'm not convinced.
it works and quickly, 20 Apr 2006
i like this book it is the second hewitt book i have bought and boath are clear concise and helpfull.i got the book a wile ago and since i started reading it ive had a more positive outlook and my abilities have increaced threefold. it has clear tecniques and some case studys it's all to the point.the book is mainly the exercises and case studys very little useless theory.not bad for a book marketed as new age Straight Forward!!!, 21 Jul 2004
Just what I needed, 19 Mar 2008
