An essential buy, 09 Nov 2007
Before buying this book I attempted the online practice test (and failed!) after going through the book it highlighted areas I needed to work on. The book also provides example questions which are very similar to the test questions. I would not have passed first time without this book. Extremely useful and accessible book., 23 Apr 2004
I've just passed all three of the QTS skills tests today, and I know Iwould not have been able to do the numeracy test without this little book. It has all you need to know, and is very accessible. The book explainsthe basics you will need to know, providing many examples and practicequestions. Highly recommended for any trainee teacher as the book willreinforce your existing skills and help you to gain new ones, giving youthe confidence to take, and pass, the QTS skills tests. All you need to pass, 08 Jan 2004
A good no nonsense book. Simply follow the instructions and you should pass the tests. The practice questions are realistic and even similar to the real thing. Good luck with the teacher training. Very helpful, 17 Dec 2003
This is a very helpful guide. The questions in it are representitive of the ones you get in the real test, so you can really prepare yourself. The answers section is also good. Each answer has a 'key point' which shows you how to arrive at the answer if you got it wrong. This really does allow you to learn from your mistakes. I would recommend this to anyone who wants to brush up their skills for the test.

This is the book to buy on teaching this subject. It is clearly written, beautifully laid out and provides self assessment exercises to work through in order to clarify what has just been read. There are more provided on the cd rom at the back of the book too. If you are teaching this subject for the first time, moving up or down years or simply want to refresh your knowledge and rekindle your enthusiasm then this is the book for you.
A lifesaver, 13 Apr 2008
This book is a must for trainee teachers lacking confidence with their maths knowledge and teaching. The author empathises with the trepidation of maths, and offers clear and simple explanations. The chapters are clearly divided for when you need that quick knowledge top-up when lesson planning, and the self-test questions are a great confidence boost! The book also offers techniques that complement the new NNS teaching strategies (e.g. partitioning, multiplication grids etc).
Superb!, 24 Nov 2006
After teaching primary maths for 14 years, and being the KS2 maths subject leader for 13 of those, I have no hesitation in rating this easily the best book I have ever read on the subject. Forget all those expensive courses, and trying to negotiate the endless tweaking of the NNS, save money by using this book to deliver a series of INSETs. Unbeatable value!
Simply Fabulous!!, 04 Oct 2006
When I was told at the start of my teacher training course that I would need to buy this maths text book, I let out a big groan. I remembered all of those maths textbooks from when I was actually AT school and remembered how utterly boring they were. But since working through this book and completeing the end of chapter self-assessment questions, my confidence in maths has soared! A must have for teachers-to-be, especially those who are a bit shakey on their maths knowledge!
Good for parents!, 11 Sep 2006
I was lent this book by my son's teacher because I wanted a better understanding of what he was being taught in maths in order to help him at home. I really enjoyed reading it, revising things I'd forgetten and understanding the current approachs to teaching arithmetic in particular.
It has helped me to practice maths with my children and has also made me more personally appreciative and confident in the subject.

Pass the ICT skills test!, 27 Jan 2004
If you are worried about passing the ICT skills test - this is the book for you. Although I felt relatively confident about email and word processing, I wasn't so sure about spreadsheets and databases. This little book really helped build my confidence in these areas as it covers all the essential knowledge you need to pass the test. It also lets you know exactly what to expect in the test and contains a detailed checklist to tick off the skills as you learn them. When you've ticked all the boxes on the list - you know you are ready for the test. This really boosts your confidence.

A must have for teachers and parents, 28 Oct 2007
This book will definately help with planning - a must have, especially for trainee teachers.
It's really easy to read so you don't find yourself switiching off. It's not a book you should read cover-to-cover (if you should ever have the time to!), instead, read the section relevant to what you're about to teach. It gives you a good idea of the errors that may come up and why.
The book gives examples of misconceptions and this is useful to see if the kids really understand what they are doing. I sometimes put these examples on the board and ask the kids to mark them - this is useful for them to understand where they're going wrong or could go wrong.
Also, it shows you the progression, linked to the NNS so you can see where they came from and where they should be moving to.
This, along with Shirley Clarke books, are definately the best books that I bought during my teacher training - money well spent.
If you're not a trainee or an NQT this is still v. useful to have on your shelf - if only to dip into everytime you teach a new unit.
Wish I had bought it earlier!, 25 Aug 2005
I've just bought this book and I really wish that I had it last year when I was training to be a teacher. If I'd had it as a student I would have been able to answer my "Misconceptions in Maths" assignment a lot better! I KNOW that this is really going to help me teach maths in a more informed way. I have already used it to look up things that I'm teaching this term and I have used it to help with my planning. I'm also ashamed to say that it has helped me with my own understanding of maths because it explains why the errors happen!

Reflective Practice: Writing and Professional Development I am quite interested in the subject of this book and, having seen its contents page, had decided to order it. However, having looked at the sample pages and seen the excremental example that the author uses on page 5 for the mirror image idea, I cannot believe that she has anything of value to offer. Was this book edited? Is the use of such crude language now the norm in professional level study texts? If so, why are we concerned about the standard of A levels where no intelligent student would demonstrate so limited a range of imagination and language?
How to use and facilitate reflective practice, 31 Jan 2002
Reflective practice is one of the most powerful methods for professionals in any field to engage in self development. It is also a method of transforming the level of collaboration among colleagues. This is a practical in-depth guide. The examples show how useful these methods can be.

This book covers all the areas of the test - spelling, punctuation, comprehension and grammar. Each section goes over the knowledge you will be tested on and provides questions similar to those that will appear in the test. There is a good answers section which provides extra explanation for the difficult questions. All-in-all a very good purchase for any trainee teacher taking the test!

Just what we have been waiting for in school!, 23 Mar 2007
This book was a real eye opener. For so long I feel we have been left as teachers to struggle on in our classes attempting to teach, but with not much guidance about how to reach those that don't settle or want to learn. I found this book very accessible, highlighting facts that we all need to know within Education. When I was training I didn't have any lectures on Attachment and after reading this fantastic book I wonder why? The author is very skilled at supporting the teacher to make sense of a child's early experiences at home and how they might present in the classroom, as a result of these. I particularly liked the distinction between the different attachment styles and the summaries in the second half of the book. Many of my pupils came to mind as I read this! Practical strategies were included that I feel I could use in my context. The content of this book makes so much sense. Having this knowledge means that I can intervene in a way that is helpful, rather than exacerbating a situation. This is a book that will definately impact upon my classroom practice. In fact I keep it in my top drawer! I would strongly recommend it to all those working in schools.

This book is recommended by the Bristol PGCE. The book is ok, with some useful information - but it is quite dull. I did find it useful when writing all the essays for the PGCE course.
Learning to teach in the secondary school, 08 Aug 2006
Book recommended by Cambridge PGCE reading list. Some valuable information but I always find that the subject specific books in this range are of far more use
too much text, 06 Feb 2006
really helpful book to refer to if u need some help with something in particular. i personally found it quite difficult to read- lots and lots of text got a bit tiresome.
A good core text but could be improved, 25 Sep 2004
The book is of reasonable use, with tips and advice for student teachers as well as subjects that you are likely to study throughout your course. Useful for assignments too. It would have been better if there was a book for each subject that would relate examples directly to your specialism, rather than unrelated or vague examples. There are books related to english, maths etc but not all secondary subjects.
A comprehensive guide to becoming a seocondary school teache, 02 Jan 2004
This book is a comprehensive guide for those who wish to undertake teacher training to become a secondary school teacher. Not only does it cover the main issues in teaching such as lesson planning and behaviour management but it also give a useful yet concise guide to other important aspects of teaching such as details on the national curriculum, the psychology of pupils and how to maximise learning for your pupils taking in to consideration different learning styles and abilities. The most useful aspects were the suggested exercises and issues to consider in order preparing oneself for school placements.

Its ok, 31 May 2007
This book is recommended by the Bristol PGCE.
Recomended, 31 May 2004
I am an undergraduate early childhood studies student, undertaking a research project. I found this book very easy going to read and all research terms where introduced and explained clearly. The book is written by very experienced researchers and this is reflected in the text. The book covers all areas in great depth (ethics, paradigms, methods, analysis) and provide easy to understand examples. The book also presents research in an exciting, exploritory way. Very recommended

I passed my literacy test this week using this book. The book covers every area of the test plus other common misconceptions. The book also includes practice questions which are very similar to the test questions.Would reccommend to anyone doing the TDA tests.

A real help, 17 Dec 2003
This book covers all the areas of the test - spelling, punctuation, comprehension and grammar. Each section goes over the knowledge you will be tested on and provides questions similar to those that will appear in the test. There is a good answers section which provides extra explanation for the difficult questions. All-in-all a very good purchase for any trainee teacher taking the test!

Reflective Practice: Writing and Professional Development I am quite interested in the subject of this book and, having seen its contents page, had decided to order it.
