We were told by our university that this was a highly recommened book, and they weren't wrong. If you are studying Early Years and want a book that covers services, policy,practice and diversity within Early Years then this is a good book to start with. Easy to read, you'll probably find what you are looking for. Perfect book for Early Childhood students, 22 Aug 2007
A fantastic book! Even if you have an earlier edition I would recommend you get this book too as it has some different chapters in, and obviously more up-to-date information.
I used this book (and previous editions) to help me with the majority of my assignments for my degree in Early Childhood Studies, and will no doubt continue to refer to it for many years to come.
It's informative and easy to read unlike some academic texts.
If you are only going to buy one book for a degree around the subject area of Early Childhood make it this one as it covers many relevant and interesting topics. An in-depth insight into issues in childhood, 05 Apr 2004

This is a very good book covering all aspects of leadership in the early years. It links directly to the EYP standards and really makes you reflect upon your practice and how to improve it. This therefore encourages ideas for providing evidence to meet the EYP standards. The regular tasks and assessments are quite simple but very appropriate to the work required. This is a book written by highly qualified and experienced early years professionals for new and developing early years professionals. Highly recommended

I bought this book after reading the glowing reviews left by other shoppers expecting to be 'wow'ed by a wealth of ideas to use with my toddler. Well all the ideas are easy to implement but I found very little that was new to me. If you have never spent any time with kids before or don't have many ideas of your own then you will find this book useful as there are lots of good, cheap, practical ideas, songs words and recipes. If you have spent some time with kids, remember your nursery rhymes and have done things like - make dens with a blanket -without needing a book to tell you then I would suggest looking elsewhere.

I like the variety of easy to do activities in this book. It's so handy to have a book "do the thinking for you"... filled with great suggestions to choose from, some of which the entire family can enjoy. Ever since I had my new baby, I try to spend a few minutes daily with my 3-year-old while the baby is sleeping. My daughter looks forward to this special time together. She often asks to do something over and over again that I first found in this book. I would also like to recommend another quick-read guide that I have found helpful regarding play and quality time spent with friends and the family called "The Pocket Parent."
The best children's activity book I've ever seen., 05 Sep 1999
First of all, it starts with six-month-old babies with activities they can really do and benefit from. Second, it uses stuff that you really do have around the house, like pillows and blankets. I go mad with frustration when I have my 3-year-old all geared up for a great project and then realize that the seventh thing on the "You Need" list is a styrofoam vegetable tray that I don't have. This never happens with Wonderplay, because the activities are elegantly simply -- and inexpensive! And they really do foster creativity--my child's, not mine!

As a single parent, I am always eager to hear of practical approaches to helping my two pre-school children. Living as I do in a rural area with little access to workshops and seminars, and with minimal opportunity to swap anecdotes with other parents, I am grateful for this wonderful collection of ideas and techniques for what to do with my kids. The authors obviously know their stuff, are tuned into kids, and are sensitive to the needs of parents. I wish they would write another book for helping with older kids also!

This book is great for planning and observations it helps link these together and is great for all early years settings. I am a childminder and found it a very useful tool to support the new EYFS.
Useful guide to EYFS, 21 Jan 2008
This book gives a clear explanation of the EYFS and what is expected from practitioners. It goes through the principles and what the implications are for a setting. It has lots of examples of different types of observations from many settings and how the EYFS can be managed in different settings. I liked the examples of a parents' questionaire and questions to elicit reflective answers from children.

I like the variety of easy to do activities in this book. It's so handy to have a book "do the thinking for you"... filled with great suggestions to choose from, some of which the entire family can enjoy. Ever since I had my new baby, I try to spend a few minutes daily with my 3-year-old while the baby is sleeping. My daughter looks forward to this special time together. She often asks to do something over and over again that I first found in this book. I would also like to recommend another quick-read guide that I have found helpful regarding play and quality time spent with friends and the family called "The Pocket Parent."

First of all, it starts with six-month-old babies with activities they can really do and benefit from. Second, it uses stuff that you really do have around the house, like pillows and blankets. I go mad with frustration when I have my 3-year-old all geared up for a great project and then realize that the seventh thing on the "You Need" list is a styrofoam vegetable tray that I don't have. This never happens with Wonderplay, because the activities are elegantly simply -- and inexpensive! And they really do foster creativity--my child's, not mine!

As a single parent, I am always eager to hear of practical approaches to helping my two pre-school children. Living as I do in a rural area with little access to workshops and seminars, and with minimal opportunity to swap anecdotes with other parents, I am grateful for this wonderful collection of ideas and techniques for what to do with my kids. The authors obviously know their stuff, are tuned into kids, and are sensitive to the needs of parents. I wish they would write another book for helping with older kids also!

This book is great for planning and observations it helps link these together and is great for all early years settings. I am a childminder and found it a very useful tool to support the new EYFS.

This book gives a clear explanation of the EYFS and what is expected from practitioners. It goes through the principles and what the implications are for a setting. It has lots of examples of different types of observations from many settings and how the EYFS can be managed in different settings. I liked the examples of a parents' questionaire and questions to elicit reflective answers from children.

2nd Year into a Foundation Degree I must have purchased over 20 books for my bookshelf, You get to realise that there are some that you turn to more often that others, THIS IS ONE! They've made complicated issues easier to read, personally I look in the index and go to the related pages rather than read the whole section and have referred to it time and again in my assignments. I have found it very useful.
I would suggest that managers and supervisors should have one to, a good reference for them.

We were told by our university that this was a highly recommened book, and they weren't wrong. If you are studying Early Years and want a book that covers services, policy,practice and diversity within Early Years then this is a good book to start with. A fantastic book! Even if you have an earlier edition I would recommend you get this book too as it has some different chapters in, and obviously more up-to-date information.
I used this book (and previous editions) to help me with the majority of my assignments for my degree in Early Childhood Studies, and will no doubt continue to refer to it for many years to come.
It's informative and easy to read unlike some academic texts.
If you are only going to buy one book for a degree around the subject area of Early Childhood make it this one as it covers many relevant and interesting topics. An in-depth insight into issues in childhood, 05 Apr 2004
Pugh offers the chance for readers of this book to both discuss and criqite various contraversial subjects within childhood. Her book includes current issues from families - to child behaviour management. I have used her book a lot to support my arguments when completing essays and dissertations part of my university course. A must buy for all!

This is a very good book covering all aspects of leadership in the early years. It links directly to the EYP standards and really makes you reflect upon your practice and how to improve it. This therefore encourages ideas for providing evidence to meet the EYP standards. The regular tasks and assessments are quite simple but very appropriate to the work required. This is a book written by highly qualified and experienced early years professionals for new and developing early years professionals. Highly recommended

I bought this book after reading the glowing reviews left by other shoppers expecting to be 'wow'ed by a wealth of ideas to use with my toddler. Well all the ideas are easy to implement but I found very little that was new to me. If you have never spent any time with kids before or don't have many ideas of your own then you will find this book useful as there are lots of good, cheap, practical ideas, songs words and recipes. If you have spent some time with kids, remember your nursery rhymes and have done things like - make dens with a blanket -without needing a book to tell you then I would suggest looking elsewhere.

Bought this book to give me some support for the EYFS and it's great. It has four main sections, a unique child, positive relationships, enabling environments and learning and development.
It has a good chapter on observations and how to document children's experiences.
It is well put together and a good resource for improving any early years setting.

As a CCLD Level 4 student, I was advised to buy this book by my tutor. Although at first I found the book a bit daunting to look at, it has turned out to be invaluable. As a Early Years Practitioner I really recommend it. It is not only useful for my coursework, but my day to day work too.

A fantastic book written for all Early Years Professionals whether in a nursery, pre-school, a childminder or Teaching Assistant.
It is written clearly and explains the four areas of the Early Years Foundation Stage.

Bought this book to give me some support for the EYFS and it's great. It has four main sections, a unique child, positive relationships, enabling environments and learning and development.
It has a good chapter on observations and how to document children's experiences.
It is well put together and a good resource for improving any early years setting.

As a CCLD Level 4 student, I was advised to buy this book by my tutor. Although at first I found the book a bit daunting to look at, it has turned out to be invaluable. As a Early Years Practitioner I really recommend it. It is not only useful for my coursework, but my day to day work too.

This is a wonderful little book that provides the reader with excellent ideas that could be used with young children. The book would be very useful for early years teachers, students, support staff and parents. It gives you clear links to the steeping stones & early learning goals which makes it very easy plan activities in an educational environment. The book also explains what resources/equipment you will need, key vocabulary, other ideas/activities and links to stories and songs. I think this is brilliant book which has given me a lot of easy, fun creative ideas that I have used in my classroom.

We were told by our university that this was a highly recommened book, and they weren't wrong. If you are studying Early Years and want a book that covers services, policy,practice and diversity within Early Years then this is a good book to start with. A fantastic book! Even if you have an earlier edition I would recommend you get this book too as it has some different chapters in, and obviously more up-to-date information.
I used this book (and previous editions) to help me with the majority of my assignments for my degree in Early Childhood Studies, and will no doubt continue to refer to it for many years to come.
It's informative and easy to read unlike some academic texts.
If you are only going to buy one book for a degree around the subject area of Early Childhood make it this one as it covers many relevant and interesting topics. An in-depth insight into issues in childhood, 05 Apr 2004
Pugh offers the chance for readers of this book to both discuss and criqite various contraversial subjects within childhood. Her book includes current issues from families - to child behaviour management. I have used her book a lot to support my arguments when completing essays and dissertations part of my university course. A must buy for all!
P.S once you have this book, there is no need for other books as this book covers all subject matters in childhood.

I'm a big fan of Sally Featherstone and this is one of the best in the series. Very clear, precise, easy to read and not at all patronising. I like this a lot.
