A must have book, 30 Aug 2007
I love it! The children in my class love it!
It is full of literacy starters and games to get children thinking. It fits really well with the Ros Wilson 2020 / Big Writing and the Literacy Hour.
I wouldn't be without it.
A must for any teacher!, 23 Jun 2007
I have Jumpstart for over 3 years now and it has been invaluable in my Literacy planning. The games are split into sections, some are quick, others need more time - but all of the games are wonderful. My class has several firm favourites, and I have been particularly happy with the spelling games, of which many are now being played at the children's home whilst learning their spellings for the week. Jumpstart games can be applied to any year group and I would recommend it to any Teacher.
A good starting point, 03 Apr 2007
I've used a few of the activities in this book 'as they stand' and they have worked very well with my Y7-Y8 classes who are about Level 2 - Level 4.
I don't feel it is something you could refer to as an emergency 10 minutes before the lesson starts. I have to either incorporate the activities into schemes of work or refer to it the night before/morning.
Covers all range of literacy activities and is an excellent resource in that respect.
Handy for the classroom, 28 Nov 2006
This has been a great classroom tool. It is easy read and has some great ideas. Some of them you may have already thought of, but on those rainy days when your brain just isn't working, it's great to be able to flip through the pages and find an inspiring starter. Or, in some cases the inspiration for a greta lessons; there are some lovely writing workshop ideas included. Great for 7-14's. A must have for every teachers tool box.
Thoroughly Useful!, 22 Feb 2005
Suitable for upper KS2 and secondary level, this is a great collection of literacy starters and warm-up activites. Many of the activities and games could be adapted for KS1 and lower junior. Corbett covers virtually every aspect of sentence structure and language use in this gem. He is an inspiring writer and his ideas have really livened up the start of literacy lessons in my year 5 class. Highly recommended!

This is the book to buy on teaching this subject. It is clearly written, beautifully laid out and provides self assessment exercises to work through in order to clarify what has just been read. There are more provided on the cd rom at the back of the book too. If you are teaching this subject for the first time, moving up or down years or simply want to refresh your knowledge and rekindle your enthusiasm then this is the book for you.
A lifesaver, 13 Apr 2008
This book is a must for trainee teachers lacking confidence with their maths knowledge and teaching. The author empathises with the trepidation of maths, and offers clear and simple explanations. The chapters are clearly divided for when you need that quick knowledge top-up when lesson planning, and the self-test questions are a great confidence boost! The book also offers techniques that complement the new NNS teaching strategies (e.g. partitioning, multiplication grids etc).
Superb!, 24 Nov 2006
After teaching primary maths for 14 years, and being the KS2 maths subject leader for 13 of those, I have no hesitation in rating this easily the best book I have ever read on the subject. Forget all those expensive courses, and trying to negotiate the endless tweaking of the NNS, save money by using this book to deliver a series of INSETs. Unbeatable value!
Simply Fabulous!!, 04 Oct 2006
When I was told at the start of my teacher training course that I would need to buy this maths text book, I let out a big groan. I remembered all of those maths textbooks from when I was actually AT school and remembered how utterly boring they were. But since working through this book and completeing the end of chapter self-assessment questions, my confidence in maths has soared! A must have for teachers-to-be, especially those who are a bit shakey on their maths knowledge!
Good for parents!, 11 Sep 2006
I was lent this book by my son's teacher because I wanted a better understanding of what he was being taught in maths in order to help him at home. I really enjoyed reading it, revising things I'd forgetten and understanding the current approachs to teaching arithmetic in particular.
It has helped me to practice maths with my children and has also made me more personally appreciative and confident in the subject.

Perfect for young siblings, 07 Nov 2008
This book has no words which means you have to discuss the pictures with your toddler. It is the perfect tool to open a discussion about what is going to happen when the baby comes home from the hospital and shows them that they will still have special time with you after the new arrival.
I loved this book, 18 Mar 2008
I bought this book on the strength of the other reviews and it did not disappoint. The illustrations are lovely, and I was delighted to see depictions of breastfeeding the new baby included.
A must buy for second time mums!, 17 Aug 2006
I thought this book was fab. I loved the idea that it has no words but very detailed pictures. You can chose to discuss what you like with your child. Its great to see mum breast-feeding the newborn. A really good buy and very tastefully done.
A great way to discuss a new arrival, 04 Jan 2006
I found the lovely pictures in this book great, I sat down with my three year old and through the pictures we were able to discuss what would happen once his baby brother was born. A great way to prepare young children for a new baby. My 3 yr old loved it so much he'd look at the book in bed and fall asleep with his head in the book :)
Just what the doctor ordered, 19 Oct 2005
Within a week of receiving the book, I think we have read the book over twenty times, and every time my daughter loves it, great service and value for money

Within a week of receiving the book, I think we have read the book over twenty times, and every time my daughter loves it, great service and value for money Really excellent education reference, 15 May 2008
I found this book really useful for filling all the gaps on my PGCE year. It dips into education theory in more depth than our lectures did, but is not so pretentious or jargon-filled that I struggled with it. I also found the accompanying Readings for Reflective Teaching useful- especially as resource for essays or for trying to get your head around Vygotsky or Piaget in their own words. Essential for teacher training, 23 Jan 2008
This is one of those useful reference books you can always dip into for help, quotes and ideas on practice and reflective activities. It has probably been one of the most useful books I have purchased for my ITT and I have frequently referenced it. Pricey but worth it - certainly one of the books I will hang on to for a long time. Really good general resource for trainee teachers, 23 Mar 2004
I have found 'Reflective Teaching' a very helpful and well presented overview of key issues in learning and teaching. The book's language is straightforward, yet not simplistic, and the topics covered are both important and current. The book is a really useful resource when it comes to writing essays for, e.g., a PGCE course. Each chapter serves as a really good introduction to the key points which need to be considered, and there are useful suggestions for further reading (both in the book itself, and on the Web site: RTWeb). 'Reflective Teaching' also strikes a good balance between the abstract and the specific. It isn't as up-in-the-air as many education books are, and it does consider genuine classroom issues, but equally it doesn't get bogged down in the minutiae of the classroom. I would really recommend this book to anybody on an initial teacher training course, as a very helpful overview of important issues and a good starting point for further, more detailed research. One criticism? The green cover design makes the book look deeply boring - which is unfortunate! Something to change for the new edition, I feel!
Reflection at its Best, 22 Sep 2002
Reflective Teaching is an excellent book. The updated version is a significant enhancement on the previous edition. I use the book with my students as a recommended text and the feedback I get is highly positive. The easy to follow sections and clear down-to-earth language and content makes it very easy for pre-service teachers to follow. The link to the 'reflection site' provides updated, on-site interactive experiences which renders the book really amazing.
Essential reading for any teaching student, 20 Aug 2002
This book is essential reading for any teaching student especially those studying for a PGCE. It can be dipped into for inspiration and the all important quotes for those gruelling essays.

Early Years Student, 13 Oct 2007
We were told by our university that this was a highly recommened book, and they weren't wrong. If you are studying Early Years and want a book that covers services, policy, practice and diversity within Early Years then this is a good book to start with. Easy to read, you'll probably find what you are looking for.
Perfect book for Early Childhood students, 22 Aug 2007
A fantastic book! Even if you have an earlier edition I would recommend you get this book too as it has some different chapters in, and obviously more up-to-date information.
I used this book (and previous editions) to help me with the majority of my assignments for my degree in Early Childhood Studies, and will no doubt continue to refer to it for many years to come.
It's informative and easy to read unlike some academic texts.
If you are only going to buy one book for a degree around the subject area of Early Childhood make it this one as it covers many relevant and interesting topics.
An in-depth insight into issues in childhood, 05 Apr 2004
Pugh offers the chance for readers of this book to both discuss and criqite various contraversial subjects within childhood. Her book includes current issues from families - to child behaviour management. I have used her book a lot to support my arguments when completing essays and dissertations part of my university course. A must buy for all! P.S once you have this book, there is no need for other books as this book covers all subject matters in childhood.

Highly recommended! alphabet, 18 May 2008
This is the book to buy on teaching this subject.
My 3 yr old loved it so much he'd look at the book in bed and fall asleep with his head in the book :) Just what the doctor ordered, 19 Oct 2005
WOW! what a way to improve your knowledge!, 22 Oct 2007
This book was a fantastic find, as I thought i was lacking a little in general Science subject knowledge. This is by far the most thorough and descriptive book that includes everything you need to know about each individual topic and what each Key Stage needs to know. It gives questions to answer whilst reading down the margin, along with a self-assessment at the end of each chapter to check understanding. This book was very useful to me as a student, so I believe this will be the same to any student worrying about having a sufficient knowledge of the Science Curriculum. This is the 3rd edition, fully revised for the new 2007 Standards. WOW!
Complete guide to teaching science at primary level., 21 Apr 2004
Wynne Harlen has done a great job with this book. It is a comprehensive guide to teaching science in terms of; teaching and learning styles, assessment methods, use of resources and ICT to help childrens' learning, how best to use practicals (SC1) in science lessons, helping children to question and think scientifically for themselves, good cross curricular links. I am a primary science specialist PGCE student at the moment, and was given a long list of course text books for science and didn't have a clue as to which one to choose. Take it from me, choose this one, as my copy is well thumbed after only 6 months of my PGCE course.
Very useful book for all trainee teachers!, 17 Nov 2002
This book has to be one of the most useful books, which already supported me during my QTS course. I would recommend it to any trainee teachers, since the book provides you with scientific information at an understandable level and presents common misconceptions, which pupils and adults/teachers may likely to show. The book provides numerous ideas of teaching ideas, which the teacher can use in the classroom. My vote: 5/5
Very good support for teachers of primary science., 05 Oct 2001
If you are worried about your subject knowledge for teaching primary science this book is an excellent foundation upon which to build it. The book is clearly written, well organised around themes and well linked to primary practice, describing what is to be taught at each key stage. In terms of trainee teachers the book is explicitly linked to current standards for achieveing Qualified Teacher Status. Each chapter is built around these links, lays out the subject knowledge needed to meet the standards and also discusses research into children's ideas in that particular field of science. As a reader I appreciated the self evaluation questions that were contained in each chapter which made me reflect on the text and apply it the 'real world'. The best book of this type I have seen to date, I would only quibble with minor points which will probably be eradicated in a second edition. Great value and well thumbed on my desk.

WOW! what a way to improve your knowledge!, 22 Oct 2007
Primary English book review, 24 Feb 2003
This book is particularly useful for those doing any teaching degree, but particularly for those who are doing the Ba ed primary teaching with QTS. This book has a range of information on giving knowledge and understanding to those who wish to find out about all the different components of teaching primary English. Such topics that are covered include spellings, early writing, shared writing of fiction and non fiction and aspects of reading, listening and speaking and grammar. This will help any teaching student in their assignments on the teaching of English to primary schools. It also provides comprehensive background information for those who are not aware of all of the aspects of teaching primary English. Soooooo it's definitely worth buuying to get your top marks in your english assignment and to acheive good teaching in schools!

Highly recommended! alphabet, 18 May 2008
This is the book to buy on teaching this subject.
My 3 yr old loved it so much he'd look at the book in bed and fall asleep with his head in the book :) Just what the doctor ordered, 19 Oct 2005
