A right ripping yarn!, 06 Sep 2008
All the intrigue of Agatha Christie, all the fun of a game of Cluedo, all the innuendo of a Carry On film with plenty of homoerotic scenes thrown in for good measure. Historical and humerous, this is one to enjoy and one to recommend to like-minded friends.
The Holmes/Watson type dynamic of Mitch and Boy Morgan is especially delicious, which I'm sure the butler would endorse! Lots of dastardly villains in the shape of the local constabulary and the manipulative Leonard Eagle. Enjoy!
No, not the Isis!!!, 07 Jun 2008
Yes, it's entertaining and yes it's arousing and thus fulfils its own brief. But ... oh dear Mr Lear, on page TWO you identify the river that flows through Cambridge as the Isis. It isn't. The Isis flows through Oxford. The "old" name of Cambridge's river Cam is the Granta (like the literary magazine). In a confection such as "Back Passage", it's these details (easily checked on Wikipedia, for God's sake), that make the difference between a genre-subverting delight and a ho-hum "well ... it's sort of OK and ... sort of fun ..."
Louis LaSalle's cover photograph is, as usual with Mr LaSalle, drop-dead sexy.
The Back Passage , 15 May 2008
A Funny, sexy "Who dunnit" book, with quite graphic sex in every chapter.
The main character Mitch takes every opportunity (and there are many) to enjoy his sexuality. James Lear is on to a winner with this character and I hope he takes him further into his adventures as a detective. I can't wait to read more.
Giggle fest almost the whole way through!, 03 Oct 2007
With the exception of a brief interlude of (appropriate to context) police brutality, I laughed the whole way through this book! I read it when working nightshift and my co-workers thought I was mad. Written in a great 1920's style it is very explicit and the sex scenes are very intense (and unrelenting). However, the humour in evident on every page. If you want a nice whodunnit buy agatha christie - want a whodunnit with wit and bite? Try this! Ok, as a straight woman I am maybe not the intended audience but as random purchases go, I am so glad I bought it. Hilarious.
5 stars for the cover!, 08 Aug 2007
Is there a label for this kind of gay lit that has proliferated in recent years? These romps are usually decently written and often quite diverting but their raison d'etre is the endless stream of graphically described sexual encounters in which just about every young guy the handsome hunky hero encounters is ready and willing. If you removed the continuous stream of sex fantasies nobody would be bothered to read these books and presumably the authors wouldn't be bothered to write them. This particular opus in totally anachronistic in the sense that the gay ethos of our modern age is transplanted to a 1920s setting. But it's all fantasy so what does it matter?
Now, are you looking for a dazzling example of a classic whodunnit from the Golden Age of the 20s and 30s? In which case do an Amazon search for the Poisoned Chocolates Case by Anthony Berkeley.
Or would you prefer a porny read that's pretty good fun, capably written with a so-so whodunnit stitched on? I thought so. In which case the Back Passage will do nicely.

This collection of short stories is an absolute scorching read. I was unable to stop reading it and, in the end, I had to ration myself to one or two stories a night.
The subjects cover the whole range of lesbian sexual expression and there is going to be something for everyone inside its pages. It is rude, raunchy, seductive and just plain sexy.
I was aroused by the stories pretty much all the time and my girlfriend kept getting woken up regularly when I was reading it in bed.
Buy it, it will really give you ideas. oh dear, what a dissapointment, 04 Feb 2007
i really cant say any more than that of mt title above, i was looking for some steamy hot women on women tales, and i really didn't get that. the book is a matter of taste, if you enjoy reading stories about butch daddy types, that wish above all else that they had a penis then go ahead and buy this. personally i love women who are women and that means i loathed this book. definitely did not stir any passions within me. but again it depends on your tastes in one word WET!, 14 Jan 2006

What can I say apart from WOW!!! This collection of short stories leads the reader on an exhilarating journey through the most intimate desires, emotions and sexual experimentations of contemporary lesbian women. One story in particular made this book well worth reading... Kitten by new author Stephanie Taylor fuses pure energy and vibrancy in its narrative with unadulterated erotic drama that left me tingling all over. I am on tenterhooks waiting for the next publication by this exciting author which promises at the very least to be thrilling!!!!
Thoughts of a straight reader, 02 Feb 2004
So, it wasn't what I wanted but heh, what do I know? Simply put if you are after fantasy material written for the selfish straight male - do not buy this book - go to the newsagents and buy an appropriate glossy magazine. This book is not pornography it is beautifully crafted and emotional literature that I enjoyed. I may even have learned something:about modern sapphism - yes, women in general - perhaps, how to relate sex to emotion - absolutly. My only concern is that like the character who watches her partner on the sly (read it) I am a guilty voyeur intruding on a world to which I wasn'ted invited and do not belong. Do I feel guilty - not really. I feel enlightened.

Oh, wow., 29 Jan 2004
Though I am not a lesbian, I thoroughly enjoyed getting my curoisty sated through this beautifully written anthology. The only thing I've read that comes close to getting it right--besides this one--is "The Other Woman" by Kim Corum and also "Bad Girl" by Alision Tyler. A truly wonderful book. I would highly recommend it.
hot!, 07 Apr 2003
Definately worth a read, i found it very entertaining and stimulating to read! It tells of different experiences from in the funeral(very surprising i thought) to phone sex to your normal bedroom on how women have satisfied their curiosity as lesbian virgins to fulfilling their fantasies. Definately worth reading.
a wonderful book..., 14 Apr 1999
This book is very well written. It captures you so easily and once you begin to read it, you can't put it down. At the time I bought this book, I also bought two other lesbian erotica books...this one was the longest, but yet I finished it first (go figure). If you want something that is going to make your body throb and your heart sing, then this is the book to get.
Tasteful, erotic and a true celebration of lesbian sex, 06 Nov 1998
I have read other books professing to be "lesbian erotica" but they usually have included too much of the role playing and stereotyping I am not a fan of, rather than focusing solely on the mutual pleasure and sensuality that two women can achieve together. Awakening the Virgin appealed to that part of me that believes in the beauty and passion of women loving women while also validating the empowerment all women need to feel around their sexuality and sexual expression. A beautiful testament to the interface between hot sexual encounters and the emotional connection needed to make them so.

Sleazy, sexy and highly entertaining..., 18 Nov 2006
This is the book I wish I'd written myself. It's sleazy and highly explicit; not for the faint-hearted. But it summons up brilliantly the atmosphere of the Halls and of the queer subculture of the thirties, (not that I remember!)
Paul Lemoyne is a pretty unpleasant character, but like his few real friends, you can't quite abandon him, and despite yourself, you care what happens to him. I suppose the fact that he knows he's behaving badly is a considerable redeeming feature. The end suggests that this may be the first of a series -- I would guess a trilogy -- a prospect which makes me very happy.
The book is written in spare prose and with a lightness of touch which makes it a pleasure to read.

Hot drama, sizzling sex and true love., 29 Oct 2008
Older ranch owner has had the secret hots for Jamie ever since the lad was an adolescent. When Jamie comes out to his dad and is chucked off the family ranch guess who he turns to for help? The author could keep the secret longing of the book's heroes simmering undeclared until the last chapter but she prefers (thankfully)to have the two guys get it on within a few pages. Thereafter, they do not seem to have much time for ranching,as opposed to raunching but who's complaining? This is a graphically erotic novel, hugely enjoyable. And there is some real adventure outside the bedroom as well lots of adventurous sex within it.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book - its lighthearted, romantic fun, with gay characters taking centre stage. ENJOY!!

Anyway...
Ethan's best friend just turned up with Shocking news his baby brother just outed himself and their papa went and disowned the poor kid. Ethan's not going to sit back and let Jamie be forced out of his home town so offers the kid a job on his ranch... you can never have enough good ranch hands.

This book is HOT!, 04 Apr 2008
I was aroused by the stories pretty much all the time and my girlfriend kept getting woken up regularly when I was reading it in bed.

i really cant say any more than that of mt title above, i was looking for some steamy hot women on women tales, and i really didn't get that. the book is a matter of taste, if you enjoy reading stories about butch daddy types, that wish above all else that they had a penis then go ahead and buy this. personally i love women who are women and that means i loathed this book. definitely did not stir any passions within me. but again it depends on your tastes in one word WET!, 14 Jan 2006

Good book, 21 Jan 2005

A book for all, 17 Jun 2003
A really good book on lesbian experiences. It helped me to come to terms with my thoughts and feelings and to see them as normal. It is a thought provoking book with some beautifully written, heart-felt stories. Well worth a read for ALL.
Any place, any time, any pursuasion. Perfect., 20 Feb 2002
This is a book full of short stories from women of all ages and nationalities, with a variety of settings and opinions. It offers an intimate glance into the secret lives of others' experiences, realistically and often heartwarmingly. With just the right balance of romantic and erotic suggestion, whether you just want something quick to read before you go to sleep or you want a feel good pick me up, this is (especially for the curious or new) the book to read.
Curious., 18 Feb 2002
Since I read "Playtime" and got a little taste of a girl/girl tryst, I wanted more. I found it in this book. It is very open, honest and just plain good. If you're just curious, like I am, this book is a good start.
thought provoking - closet door opening, 03 Feb 2002

Excellent feel good book, 18 Dec 2001
Living in a place where the people are so homophobic and will literally put you to death - if given the chance - once you are found to be gay, I have had to depend on other people's stories to get an understanding of the lesbain lifestyle and feel good about myself. I therefore depend on TV shows and books in the comfort of my own house, which fortunately I don't share with anyone. This book is excellent for those days and nights when you want to reach out to someone but there's nobody there. It allows you to feel confident that there are other persons who feel exactly the way you feel, that you are not alone. The stories are well written, funny, witty, and not too long - they get to the point and allow YOU to bask in the afterglow. The stories also tell of people of all ages and sizes. I defintely recommend this book to anyone who wants to, but haven't had the opportunity to explore a lesbian relationship. I anxiously await the day when I will be able to write my own exciting story like the ones in this book.

Good for beginners, 14 Jul 2002
I am halfway through this book but so far I am impressed with the variety of stories. Some have made me cry and others have made me laugh. Although I am not a big reader, especially not with erotic fiction, I'm finding this book very readable. I am pleased all the stories have been written by women to avoid the smutty, steriotyped lesbians that are often portrayed by men.
Reasonable book of erotica, 01 Jan 2001
Some stories very good but others seem to run out of steam just as the narative gets going. The good stories are very good thought. Worth a look if you like your erotic tamed down a bit.

This book is HOT!, 04 Apr 2008
Buy it, it will really give you ideas. oh dear, what a dissapointment, 04 Feb 2007
i really cant say any more than that of mt title above, i was looking for some steamy hot women on women tales, and i really didn't get that. the book is a matter of taste, if you enjoy reading stories about butch daddy types, that wish above all else that they had a penis then go ahead and buy this. personally i love women who are women and that means i loathed this book. definitely did not stir any passions within me. but again it depends on your tastes in one word WET!, 14 Jan 2006
wow this makes a good night time read and a good book to share with your girlfriend there is a fanasy for everyone and also some new ones. Its not for the faint harted this book is rude, rude, rude Up All Night - Kitten - Stephanie Taylor - WoW!!!!, 05 May 2005
What can I say apart from WOW!!!
Good book, 21 Jan 2005
If you want to learn about the females mind, this is the book for you, the emotional content that goes through each womens mind is abosolutly well written. conclusions *A good and interestiing read *if you want to learn how females, as they say "game" other females, its nothing much
Oh, wow., 29 Jan 2004
The Tin Star, 15 May 2008
A fabulous love story between two hot, sexy men. I loved it from the first chapter. Very good book and well worth a bedtime read.
Just Brilliant, 20 Jan 2008
I was drawn in from the first page, you can't help but fall for Ethan and Jamie. Cowboys, sex and so much more. A great read!
DALLAS GOES GAY!, 29 Oct 2007
Fabulous - what a truely great read!
A gay, romantic lovestory (taken straight from the pages of a Dallas TV script!). This great story includes family woes, mystery, evil, love, brothers, sisters, cattle, ranch hands, a steakhouse, trucks, homophobia, secrets and MOST IMPORTANT fabulous gay characters!
I thoroughly enjoyed this book - its lighthearted, romantic fun, with gay characters taking centre stage. ENJOY!!
J L Langley Writes Good M/M Romances.... , 11 Jul 2007
This book has all your basic ingredience... small pinch of comedy, a Tablespoon of Family angst, a stock of mystery, Prime Rib Cowboys, simmering Hot Sex and served with Romance (I may have lost the plot there just slightly but it made sense at the time)
Anyway...
Ethan's best friend just turned up with Shocking news his baby brother just outed himself and their papa went and disowned the poor kid. Ethan's not going to sit back and let Jamie be forced out of his home town so offers the kid a job on his ranch... you can never have enough good ranch hands.
Jamie has idolised Ethan since before he could walk and when his sex drive kicked in Ethan was the star of more than one hot fantasy living on his ranch seeing his hot bod every day is going to be hell... or is it?
For those who think they may be so far in the closet, they are in Narnia, this could be what you need to open the door. It's funny, thought provoking and very honest. As for me, the doors now open
A must read yaoi manga series, its awesome!, 01 Aug 2008
This is a must read for any yaoi or manga reader! The series is based on maleXmale relationships with interesting storylines that make you laugh and maybe a little tear in your eye!
The first couple that appears is junjou romantica couple misaki and usami(aka usagi) misaki's reactions will definetly make you wet yourself as he experiences his first gay relationship with our oh so cool and calm minded usagi.Misaki is a economics student who reluctantly becomes usagi's eye of affection.Usagi san is a well known and award winning novelist who does yaoi books on the side which he includes details of his love affairs and fantasies with misaki.Of course poor misaki goes mental about it and it takes him time to figure his feelings for usagi but there are some interesting moments of course that make you wet yourself.
Our second couple the junjou egoist couple nowaki and hiroki(hiro-san). Hiro-san is heart broken as he is in love with his childhood friend usagi-san. He suddenly bumps into nowaki who wants to be tutored by hiro-san but actually has fallen in love with him.Nowaki is a optimistic sweety that just wants to make hiro-san smile again. These two go through alot and get stronger from it but there are moments.....enough if you want the juice of it read the series, some of the moments with hiro-san and nowaki make you either want to cry or laugh your heart out.
Our third couple the junjou terrorist couple has a smaller yet cute part of the series. Shinobu is a young man who suddenly falls in love with myagi a literature professor who tries to.... well tell shinobu hes not interested. Well shinobu thinks its destiny and is very persistent so please read and you will find out the whole story. Like the other couples these two will make you laugh till your ears pop.
Well hope I havent ruined your reading pleasure but you wont know the whole and proper story till you read it and trust me this series is worth the money, there is even an anime out but its still to be realeased on DVD as its only just finnished being aired on Japanese TV.All three couples are interlinked with different charcters so it all adds to one big storyline. Please read the books, I have the first 5 volumes so far and its awesome!
great storyline, 09 Jan 2008
Now, for the first time ever, I like a yaoi manga's storyline more than the artwork. I'm not saying that the drawing style is appaling, but it's far from being beautiful. I'd say that it's OK.
But the storyline...is absolutely fantastic.
You actually get to follow 2 couples :
Junjo Romantica with the spirited, ever so funny and angsty Misaki and his lover-to-be the confident and cool Usami.
Junjo Egoist with the heart broken teacher Hiroki and the ever optimistic student Nowaki.
Both stories are linked and characters from one story are appearing every so often in the other one.
It is a very compelling book, with lots of sexy scenes, really fun (the humor is what sold it to me), and will have you on a rollercoaster of emotions.
A definite read.
An anime series is even being announced!

Enjoy!
