The Complete Guide to Asperger's Syndrome is a must to strengthen your strategies as well as your knowledge on any kinds of specific symptoms on Asperger Syndrome. Also, Dr. Attwood explains other related and/or complicated syndromes. Although this book has so many pages, it is quite easy to read and includes no complicated structure. It is reader-friendly, if you ask me! If you find it quite tough to read it all through, you might as well pick up your favorite chapters. And it's going to lighten the loads of your mind and deepen your understanding on your AS traits.
After all, this book provides a lot of solutions to tackle their problems not only for Aspies but teachers, parents, friends, siblings, colleagues, and bosses who deal with AS people and those who are likely to have AS. And this will minimize their shortcomings on AS, worse or worst situations, and their stresses. It is Aspies who suffer their symptoms most!
If possible, I could give more than 6 stars to this wonderful book Tony Attwood wrote!
The Complete Guide to Asperger's Syndrome, 07 Feb 2008
This remarkable book gives an incredibly clear account of asperger's and its impact on people around them. It is easy to read yet gives the most profound insights and cause for joy and optimism. A diagnosis of Aspergers is not the end of the world but a way of accessing the genius and talents that can go with it. If you know people who may be on the autistic spectrum it gives you a way of understanding and enjoying them and seeing the truth beneath a way of being that can make people hard to know. Reading the book has been an eyeopener for me, I have always enjoyed being with unusual people and now understand why.
The Complete Guide to Asperger Syndrome, 29 Dec 2007
When we were at the assessment stage this book really helped me to recognise what my child's problem was. It has so much information, and I have reread it several times.
The Asperger's Bible - Truly a Godsend!, 10 Aug 2007
Dr. Attwood is the leading expert on Asperger's Syndrome (AS) which is the spectrum partner to autism. This book is, at the time of this review his most current work. It is a shining gem and one of the standouts in autism/Asperger's (a/A) literature. If you are on the a/A continuum or know somebody who is, this book is your best friend. You will refer to it many times.
What makes this book all the more excellent and distinct is that Dr. Attwood discusses adults on the a/A spectrum as well. Autism in its myriad forms including AS does not clear up once a person hits adulthood. If you have it, it is with you for the long haul. Dr. Attwood's book and words of wisdom help lighten the load.
I have bought several copies of this book and have kept one for myself and gave the others to professionals in dire need of it. This book deserves a place of high honor and no parent; professional; person on the spectrum; anybody involved with a person/people on the spectrum should go without this book.
I was delighted to see a section devoted to intersensory marriage, that is of a neurotypical (NT) person to somebody on the a/A continuum. I would like to see more coverage of this much needed topic as AS presents a wide array of social challenges. Still, it is heartwarming; uplifting and encouraging to see more information devoted to intersensory marriages.
I agree with other reviewers who say Dr. Attwood is the best - I think we should propose a toast and raise our glasses to Dr. Attwood!
Just one book... make it this one., 02 Feb 2007
I have read lots of books on AS and reviewed many of them. What I am always warning is that in most cases any one book never gives a complete picture.
Tony Attwood's book though is about as complete a picture as you could get right now and is not only far superior to his first guide to the subject but to many others on the market.
If you read just one book on AS this should be it. It is easy to read, packed with information, and the author's respect and appreciation for people with Asperger's is evident on every page.
It's professional, it's factual, it's understanding, it's worth owning a copy.

Very practical indeed, 20 Jun 2007
As a Counselling Psychology trainee working in primary care and with alcohol and drug users using CBT I find this manual indispensible.
For the complete novice, its initial chapters present a simple and concise guide to the theory and practice of cognitive behavioural therapy that is easy to understand and put into practice with clients.
Further chapters present a step-by-step 'how to' guide to the treatment of a variety of anxiety disorders including panic attacks, OCD, social anxiety and generalised anxiety. Each covers the evidence base, conceptualisation and treatment of a particular disorder, offering an outline treatment plan and a variety of cognitive tools and behavioural experiments to try.
I have found the book much more helpful than the more generalised, starry-eyed manual by Judith Beck as it provides a clear structure for working with clients with a particular diagnosis. At my stage of training it's just what I need to keep my own anxiety levels in check, although even at ten quid off the RRP it didn't do much for my bank balance ...
Cognitive therapy of anxiety disorders, 20 Dec 2004
I found this book to be informative and practical to use. Equal depth, research and evidencece-based treatment techniques are clearly highlighted for each disorder inclusive of OCD and panic disorder. Additionally the book offers a range of models and treatment techniques which can easily be applied to clinical practice or used solely as a learning resource.
Excellant, highly recomended, 06 Feb 2002
Dr Wells is at the cutting edge of cognitive theory and therapy for anxiety disorders. He provides disorder specific cognitive models for a range of anxiety disorders that help the practitioner develop detailed formulations, which drive treatment interventions. This is a must have resource for both novice and experienced cognitive therapists.
excellent handbook, discusses the use of CT in depth, yet is, 12 Jan 2002
This is an excellent manual and guide for anyone interested in Cognitive Therapy. It discusses in depth the the theory and models of anxiety yet manages to be an 'easy' read. This book is indispensable to anyone who is working in the field whether they are trainees or experienced therapists. I refer to it constantly and have never found anything to be missing! It methodically covers assessment and clinical measures, the basic techniques of cognitive therapy, then goes on to discuss in great detail the major disorders that can be treated using CT.
Excellent book for practicioners and researchers alike, 18 Jul 2001
This book by Adrian Wells is a comprehensive and informative overview on the authors thinking about a number of anxiety disorders and their treatment. Few researchers are as much in touch with their patients and at the same time are able to outline the essence of the problems of these patients in such an understandable and yet precise fashion. I highly recommend this book to all psychotherapists and especially to cognitive-behavioral therapists that treat patients with anxiety disorders. I feel that after reading this book, I have understood a great deal more about anxiety disorders, my patients and how to treat them than i had before (that is after about 4 years of practise and an equal amout of time of research and study of these disorders).

Another Positive book from CBT Psychologist's, 02 Feb 2006
As this book is aimed at professionals I was very weary of buying it. There is always the fear that such books will pay too much heed to genetics and so become very depressing. Fortunately, the authors tend to believe that environment, upbringing, and the attitudes we hold are the main triggers of depression and this can be overcome using cognitive behavour therapy (CBT). As an example of their optimism compare the two views here, one from mainstream psychiatry the other from the authors of the above book. Biopsychiatry tends to believe that everytime a depression strikes, the brain becomes more damaged and therfore more vulnerable to depression ( if this is true then a good dose of fish oil - best taken as pure EPA - will put it right, but a lot of psychiatrists won't tell you that). The authours of this book have an alternative view: when depression strikes we learn how to think depressively, and this learned behaviour, plus the memories of our previous depression, can mean we think negatively more readily when we come under stress again in the future. The authors are very enthusiastic that mindlefness cognitive therapy techniques can break these habitual detrimental thought patterns. Mindfullnes CBT techniqes are also be used to pick up negative thoughts before they trigger a depression. It seems that although many people get well from depression using CBT, there may be a relapse when negative thoughts get through unnoticed. I have always been interested in meditation and so this book greatly appealed to me. I have also found it to be a very optimistic book and so it has become part of my armoury to help me overcome my own chronic depression.
revolutionary!, 20 May 2005
A truly excellent book. Aimed at the therapist/clinician but explains the background sufficiently to be used as a self-help book by a motivated and/or educated sufferer. Merges Eastern meditative practices with traditional cognitive therapy to produce a sensible, accessible, life-changing approach to preventing depressive relapse. Others will follow in these authors' footsteps. A book that everybody involved with mental health or who has suffered depression should read.

If you want real, eloquently written scientific research about autism..., 15 Sep 2008
This is a fantastic book for both parents and researchers new to autism. Nothing is 'dumbed down' but Baron-Cohen writes in a very readable, engaging style that, even if you know nothing about the subject of autism, will make you want to solve its so far very elusive mystery.
Highly recommended, along with Baron-Cohen's other books in the area ('The Essential Difference' is very good if you want to explore the gender aspect further, something Baron-Cohen introduces in the book)

Situation Critical, 07 Feb 2008
This is one of those books that once you get finished reading, you feel an almost moral obligation to share it with everyone. This fascinating work was my first introduction to the subject of psychopathy, and it literally shocked me to the core. You just won't see the world in the same way again... your eyes will be opened.
In the Preface to the book, Dr. Robert Hare writes:
"Psychopaths are social predators who charm, manipulate, and ruthlessly plow their way through life, leaving a broad trail of broken hearts, shattered expectations, and empty wallets. Completely lacking in conscience and in feelings for others, they selfishly take what they want and do as they please, violating social norms and expectations without the slightest sense of guilt or regret. Their bewildered victims desperately ask, 'Who are these people?' 'What makes them the way they are?' 'How can we protect ourselves?'"
And this is THE question that is in dire need of being dealt with in all areas and levels of society. Just think about it: we don't even teach our children about pathological deviance, because otherwise it wouldn't be happening so much. And the suffering continues.
Everyone needs to take some time out, read this book and any related materials, and really make the effort to integrate this reality into their world-view. Because the fact of the matter is: we're already victims. We've grown up in a world that favours American Idol over acquiring the necessary information that could save our lives.
One question that really made me wonder was: okay, so the very real dangers of psychopathy are not taught or discussed in a very specific way... is that by design? Have psychopaths worked their way into the educational system?
Most of us have a general mistrust of politicians and powerful media figures, but it still remains vague and with little weight in our minds. What if these people are actual psychopaths?
That's actually a rhetorical question however because reading this book, Paul Babiak's "Snakes in Suits" and Andrew Lobaczewski's "Political Ponerology" to name a few, will completely disabuse you of the notion that there a mostly good, honest decent people in the most powerful positions in society. It's actually the complete reverse.
Our world is really a dark place, and it's getting worse by the day. And you know what? Ignorance isn't bliss, because whose to say you won't be next on the menu? Not only are victims of psychopathy sorely lacking in knowledge of how to protect themselves, they're also lacking the awareness that they are NOT invulnerable... and that's why people get swindled, conned, hurt, tortured, and murdered.
Question is: are you any different?
Important Read, 13 Nov 2007
It is becoming more and more important to be able to identify the psychopath. Why? Because these predators are the ones ultimately running our governments, religions and corporations. Dr. Hare's book is not only easy to read, but has very important information on how psychopaths think and act, two ways to identify them. His findings have been used by many other psychologists in identifying psychopaths; Dr Stout and Dr. Cleckley to name just two of them.
He shows how easily one can be conned by these people. Which is why we need to read all the information that we can. And this book is loaded with information that you can use.

A revelation, 03 Jul 2007
For years I puzzled over my ex wifes lack of concern for the children and how she used them to manipulate others, lying for no reason and her amazing lack of concern for others. All our friend's believed this person was the most wonderful, charming person who would light up any room she entered. Almost every page I turned further mysteries were solved. This book was truly a revelation and has to some extent helped me to cope.
Educate yourself and read this book!, 25 Jun 2007
Highly recommended to read. Hare deals with the serious subject of psychopathy in a thorough way and covers all the essentials. Throughout the text the subject matter is illustrated by many examples from real life, which makes it easier to understand.
The disturbing fact is that about 1 out of 25 people is a psychopath and most of them do not end up in jail or mental institutions. On the contrary they climb the corporate ladder, become politicians or just simply con or defraud ordinary people without getting caught.
Best protection is to understand about psychopathy and how psychopaths operates in our midst.
Read it along with these other complimentary books on the subject: "In sheeps clothing", "The sociopath next door", "Political Ponerology" and "The Mask of Sanity".

Spendid!, 16 Sep 2008
Attwood!

Beautiful book of integration, 19 Feb 2004
There are some books in the field of cognitive psychotherapy, which take the reader to a realistic and fascinating trip in the realm of psychotherapy. This is one of them. It is full of practical wisdom, its theoretical background is understandable and the process of therapy is beautiful. The book keeps the reader on the seat, the language and syntax is working well. I liked very much the description of imagery technics and therapeutical relationship with the therapists own schemas, which very covered well in the book. I could find me and my narcissistic patient well on the pages dealing psychotherapy of narcissist personality disorder. The book integrates beckian, schematherapy and experiential techniques, deals attachement of bowlby, reciprocality of cogn.analalytic therapy and even some counter transference issues. Lovely book.

Thank you Dr, Philips, 07 May 2008
I have just received this book and CANNOT put it down. I have done a lot fo reasearch into the condition that this books refers to: BDD and this is definately one of the best. Dr. Philips writes so compassionately about sufferers and gives insight into all the variations such as muscle dysmorphia (which I think my brother is definately suffering from) and gives a full list on how you can diagnose this condition. Although I think this condition is a little over self-diagnosed what with celebraties thinking they have it, I did find the list in this book helpful and made me really think about how my brothers personality is actually all to do with this condition.
I think this book would help anyone- someone wanting to understand which is why i bought it, or even a sufferer themselves. I think the hardest part about having BDD is actually acknowledging that you have it.
Thank you Dr. Philips for writing this incredible book.
UNDERSTANDING YOUR DIAGNOSIS, 04 Feb 2007
Being diagnosed is the first step to getting better from any disorder- reading on the internet and reading books like this allow you to understand your diagnosis better and start to be healed. As a BDD sufferer myself I was very interested to read up about the disorder and found this book very helpful. I am not a complete loony- I have an illness that is understood and treatable. This book left no questions unanswered- it is the best self help book I have read and did not confuse with long scientific jargon. It inspired and helped me to write my memoir about suffering BDD 'Suicide Junkie' that is also available from Amazon. Read these two books if you are a sufferer or are trying to understand a sufferer better- they are invaluable.
You too can lead a normal life, 02 Nov 2002
BDD is such a bizarre disorder and affects people in so many different ways that it can not be adequately summed up in a few paragraphs. As a sufferer, just reading this book helped me to recognise that BDD was behind many of my own behaviours and that the shame of being obsessed with something so 'trivial' is shared by many. BDD sufferers are not vain and many would just like to consider themselves normal. The treatments covered in this book have helped me to lead a normal life.
The definitive book on BDD by the world expert., 13 Oct 2001
To some extent we are are concerned about some aspect(s) of our appearance but BDD develops when that concern becomes an obsessive preoccupation. The suffering and torment can range from mild to severe. At the extreme, to turn your attention inward against yourself in such a negative fashion, can lead to very serious consequences which should never be ignored. BDD is a hidden disorder, often misdiagnosed because the real problem is invariably not presented to medical professionals due to guilt or the fear of misunderstanding, but associated problems such as anxiety, depression and social dysfunction are usually treated. However, treatments tend to be ineffective because all these conditions are underpinned by BDD which, as a core belief, needs to be targeted before the attachments can be tackled. The good news is that, however serious the problem, BDD is treatable and improvement is possible. A combination of medication, usually SSRI anti-depressants, and psychological treatment, cognitive behaviour therapy, can chip away at those entrenched beliefs. Progress, however slow, is still progress and worth pursuing. For the BDD sufferer, this book is a godsend. You come to realise that you are not alone, you are not mad and that there is a reason for your seemingly peculiar thoughts and behaviours. In the UK alone, it is thought there are about 400,000 sufferers. Read this book by Dr Katherine Phillips who has carried out extensive research into the disorder and is its most authoriative expert. The knowledge the book imparts is the first prerequisite on the road to recovery. This book could save your life no less.

Spendid!, 16 Sep 2008
