A great little book is this and a must have for fans of the TV show. It's full of useful info that I'm sure would come in handy on an action packed Saturday night in town, and plenty of educational pictures as well. Not too demanding on the old brain cells to read and it's not overlong. An extremely funny book and after you have read it, its the sort that you can keep picking up and look at your favourite bits again. Don't lend it to anyone though, unless they give you a receipt or a returnable deposit, or you won't see it again. Very good overall, a good laff, highly recommended. Also have a look at Al Murray's 'Pub landlord' and 'The Post Box at the Crossroads' by Alan Bates.
Funny, but short, 10 Mar 2008
I read this in about an hour at the weekend. Its incredibly funny, its pure Gene Hunt (mentally I kept hearing Philip Glensiter as I read it) but its also very expensive for what you get. There's about 30 words per page and lots of photos. If you're live, sleep and breath 'life on mars' this is essential fan material, but for the rest of us I'd really recommend you just buy the TV series on DVD... you'll get much better value for money.
What we could never really get away with, 25 Dec 2007
This spin-off is a cracking read. From a professional standpoint,'Life on Mars' in truth was a tad overstated and it depicted a style of Policing that some might have wished for. The story lines were close to the bone though and brought back memories of life even before the seventies. This little gem of a book is a must-have for any fans of the drama series. Buy it and be prepared to listen to the Gospel according to Gene Hunt. If you miss this one, you'll be as disappointed as a Detective who puts his hand in his pocket and finds the warrant is missing!
The Thoughts of Chairman Gene, 28 Oct 2007
This book is a real gem and my title is not accidental. A little bit larger in size than the famous "Little Red Book", the inside cover features a picture of the Guv reminding one of Mao's photo in that earlier production. But whereas the Little Red Book" was more serious in nature, this is a lot more fun as well as also being a key product of its historical era. LIFE ON MARS was a pioneering television series that finally ended some ten years of mediocre television drama and opened the way for other achievements. These "Rules" reflect the unseen presence of "The Guv" prompting the new plainclothesman ("plonks" are naturally not recognized and their presence grudgingly admitted) into an awareness of 1973 police work. Also, the multiple choice tests, with scores by young Chris Skleton, are much more hilarious than any boring multiple choice test for school A levels or immigration tests. It is a great follow up to a great series and a suitable companion volume to the author's co-authored work on Season One of the series. Yes, it is much cheaper on amazon, com. wherever one is in the world and whatever the exchange rate. A definite buy for all real fans of the series suitably aged with faked non-acid free paper with marks of pint glass rims soiling the pages and other items easily identifiable with the Guv. Guy Adams has done a great job.
A must for all fans, 26 Oct 2007
This has to be the funniest book I have read in years, you can actually hear Gene Hunt's voice in your head as you read it! a must for all fans of the show.
also it seems a lot cheaper on Amazon than elsewhere!

Roadcraft: The Essential Police Driver's HandbookThis paper back book is what every new driver taking intensive driving lessons should read as well as the highway code. This doesn't always happen, so if you have been driving for one hour or many years you would still benefit from reading this book.
This book is well laid out and of a high quality. Clear in content it is very useful for someone having driving lessons to read it all. All points are illustrated with pictures or diagrams, So if you are training and having driving lessons in London or else where, or doing a crash driving course, it will seem obvious when you read it like all good advice. You will learn how to be a safe driver. How to handle your car and avoid accidents so it will not turn into a driving crash course so to speak, no matter what other drivers are up to otherwise called defensive driving.
There are no techniques on police pursuit driving. This is about road driving safely and quickly. Within the law, serious reading if you are going for an advanced driver badge or just having cheap driving lessons and looking to improve yourself quickly.
Have a great driving week read it
A book for every good driver, 09 Aug 2008
Don't be fooled by the new cover on the most recent issue of Roadcraft. This book is not just for Advanced Police drivers but for everyone who has a keen interest in driving and for driving safely. As a traffic cop myself it is the bible for all the courses, however, it also takes drivers who have passed the DVLA standard test and through very well laid out sections, teaches them a whole different approach to their driving.
Without giving too much away, it teaches drivers to adopt a proven system of car control which WILL improve anticipation and observation skills dramatically amongst many other things.
A very worthwhile read indeed.
The Police Driver's Handbook, 10 Feb 2007
For anybody interested in motoring, it gives an insight into advanced driving techniques. For those of us who passed their driving test when Adam was a lad, it is well worth a read. An excellent and well written book.
Excellent, 05 Jan 2007
A very necessary book to take u on from the basic test. Do not think that this will teach u all the art of high speed driving and fast car attitudes as it wont. But stops short for obvious reasons so u will get as much as legally possible to make u a very well improved driver. This book is used not only by Police driving schools but also international drivers as well. The whole Police advanced course is based and tested on this book u will not go wrong. A good supplement to this is the roadcraft DVD which covers the book visually. I have used this book for over 15 years and highly recommend it.
Roadcraft - honest opinion, 17 Mar 2005
This book covers all the relevant knowledge required for safe, systematic driving and as the book describes, the safe use of "driving to the system". It helps everyone finally understand why it is their driving that causes accidents and not the vehicles they drive. It covers cornering, steering, use of gears, overtaking (which is legal you know, regardless of people sticking their fingers up at you for doing it and flashing you when you have plenty of room and don't sacrifice anyones safety to do it !), skidding and how to correct it and much more including drivers behaviours and tips on how to generally drive safely (not necessarily slowly !). It enables any driver to observe everything around him, anticipate any hazards before its too late. This book is well worth a read if you are not the most confident of drivers or indeed you have had a few accidents and think you have learnt because the stats in this book will shock you. The only criticism of this book is that to explain a relatively straight forward task, does involve long winded words, which for some people they would find taxing and quite boring. But with a dictionary to hand, you would be fine. If it is used to train police officers, which i think from what i see living in London everyday, it does a good job ! enjoy. AW.

Confidence Is Key, 22 May 2008
This book was excellent in preparing me and helping me pass the PIRT.
It gave me the cofidence I needed on the day and I would reccommend it to anyone thinking about applying for the police force.
Go for it!
Lacks any real depth, 09 Jul 2007
Firstly, the book is good for the practice maths and verbal reasoning tests and helping you with your application form.
However, the book seems to lack any real help where you need it most. It seems to describe the process in detail but offer little help in the way of preparing you for the tests. For most people, the role plays and interview stages are the real worry of the Assesment Centre, there seemed to be little information of value on these stages.
As pointed out already, it is out of date. The book will teach you about writing a letter for the Assesment Centre which is no longer a requirement. In this sense, your on your own for the writen section of the Assesment Centre.
At the end of the day, the price of this book isn't going to put much of a dent in your wallet, and it does help to some extent.... but to me it didn't offer the kind of help other reviewers found it to be.
The most important information in this book is given to you, for free, prior to the Assesment Centre (should you pass the application form).
I'd advise others to buy it, but don't expect too much from it.
Worth every penny, 28 Dec 2006
I have just been accepted into Cheshire Police and this book played a large part in my application. I do believe that this book is the reason I passed my assessment centre. After reading the book I felt quietly confident going into my assessment centre and would have been a nervous wreck otherwise. I would advise anyone thinking of joining the police or already in the process of applying to buy this book as it is a great help.
so helpful, 14 Jul 2006
Just completed my a/c day for hants- this book is a bible when it comes to gathering knowledge of what to expext and practice questions
Absolutely invaluable, 06 Dec 2005
This book became absolutely invaluable to me as I was going through the recruitment process to join the Police. It gives you pointers on what to/what not to include on your application, practice questions for the pyschometric tests and good advice on what to do through the assessment centre. It helped me to get through the stages and I would recommend it to any potential new recruit.

Good starting point for information, 29 Oct 2008
I recently purchased this book as I have my A/C day with the Met later on this month.
Whilst I found the content of the book very helpful, there is not enough of it. It is short on practice questions. It is a good buy if you are looking for background information on the assessment day but not to test your skills.
Overall, I am glad I purchased it as it gave me an insight into what to expect.
Really good, 18 Jul 2008
Good book - lots of useful info - not so much that it becomes overwhelming tho.
If I had one criticism, it would be that it was a little light on info on passing the initial assessment form - it just kinda says "answer the questions.. don't make stuff up"... which is fine... but not really ground breaking!
If I get thru the paper-sift, this book will be invaluable tho; it was written by one of the guys who created the assessment process, so you've gotta think he knows what he's talking about! :)
This really did help me with the test, 10 Jul 2007
I've just been accepted to start my training in Gloucestershire and I think this book helped me to pass the test. It only costs a tenner and it goes through all the different bits of the test and gives some advice on the application form. Really worth the cash.

A Bobbies'Bobby, 20 Nov 2008
I found this book by chance after seeing an advert in a magazine. As a retired rural police officer and with family living in North yorkshire I thought it was worth a look.I was not to be disappointed. It actually features the village where my son lives and I was able to 'identify'some of the characters that the author had cunningly disguised.I really enjoyed this book from start to finish and was sorry when it ended.Knowing the locality helped but also knowing the job as well made this such a worth while read.I easily identified with all the situations that Mike found himself in and his descriptions were brilliant. This is definitely the best police memoirs book I have read.
Loved it, 20 Aug 2008
Have just finished this book, and LOVED it. I found it kept my interest from start to finish. It was poignant-hilarious-interesting. I found out about the book from reading the extracts in the Daily Mail over the w/end. Am so pleased i went out and got the book. I am now going to pass it to my son who wants to join the Police. I hope a sequel is on the cards!!?
Now Then Lad, 17 Aug 2008
What a thoroughly enjoyable read!! I can't wait to set off on my travels in order to see for myself the breathtaking beauty of North Yorkshire as so exquisitely described in Mike Pallett's book. I'll definitely be spending half-term in this country.......
It's also a fascinating insight into the daily life of a country bobby with many an amusing tale. Well worth the money.....!If you enjoyed this book then I would heartily recommend "Shakespeare My Butt" by John Donoghue - also a serving police officer. It's a gem of a debut novel full of hilarious tales of British places, military life and the outrageous abuse of the 999 system. Not to be missed......!!!
A right good read, 20 Jun 2008
Absolutely loved this....the authentic Yorkshire voice came through loud and clear, along with a deep love of the landscape and its people. Funny, gritty, true to life...can't wait for the next one!
True Yorkshire brilliance!, 18 Jun 2008
I received this book for my birthday from my Yorkshire-based Uncle who has always tried to jokingly persuade me that Yorkshire is better than Edinburgh; whilst, of course, I have attempted to point out all that Edinburgh has that Yorkshire does not, in an equally jovial manner!! It has long been a standing joke between us, with books being past back and forth every birthday and christmas of a geographical nature. It must be said that after years of receiving "Yorkshire Moors" type books from him, this one really stood out: my uncle was right! What a hilarious read! And most unusual to hear of such a fascinating storyteller previously unkown to me. I shall be eating humble pie for a while I do fear, and what will I buy my uncle next april for his birthday that could match the quality and inspiration of this fantastic read? The sequel perhaps?

Don't do the assessment centre without it !!, 25 Oct 2008
There are other books out there, but THIS IS THE BOOK if you are serious about sucessfully applying and then going on to pass the assessment centre. The book is an invaluable guide on not only passing the a/c, but passing with flying colours.
It is well written, well laid out, easy to follow and short of actually doing the a/c, lets you know exactly what to expect.
I would also thoroughly recommend the excellent seminars that Ian runs - just search for 'ISP police' on google. These will help you to prepare alongside other candidates where you will be able to work on each of the competency areas and structure your answers to achieve the best results.
I have just received my result today and passed with 71% - testimony indeed to Ian and his unwavering commitment to helping you achieve your goals.
Don't hesitate - buy this book, you will not regret it.
Highly recommended, 24 Sep 2008
If you are serious about wanting to be successful in passing the UK police recruitment process than this book is money well spend. It covers the whole process from the paper application, assessment centre, filter interview. Even better would be to buy the book and put your name down for the courses Ian runs (just google ISP, police) to get you fully prepared. Ian is very thorough and covers everything you need to know and he'll make you work and learn in a relaxed and fun way. I did exactly that, enjoyed the actual a/c day (trust me a lot who were there and had not prepared did not!). I have just had news that I passed....Thanks Ian!
The perfect manual for assessment centre preparation, 21 Aug 2008
Having been unsuccessful in my first attempt at the assessment centre the first time around I bought this book after seeing it mentioned on several Police forum sites. To be honest it was the best move I ever made and I have recently passed the assessment with 14% more than my last score as a result of using this book.
There is a lot to take in before sitting the assessment but the chapters in this book make the job easier as they are concise and let you know exactly what is required. Where I rank this book above other publications of it's kind is in the example exercises, particularly with regard to the written exercises and the personal manner in which it is written.
An excellent buy and one which has brought be success at last.
Police Selection Process - Ian Hutchison, 05 Aug 2008
Well written and easy to follow. The structures recommended for the written and role play tasks of the Assessment Center are first class, and got me through mine.
It provides everything needed in detail without over complicating the process.
I would be happy to recommend it to anyone thinking of applying to the Police Service.
Thanks Ian,
Mina
Give yourself the best chance to pass Police selection - buy this book, 02 Jul 2008
There are a number of books on the market and although I'm sure they will all help you go through what is a difficult and drawn out process, nothing can prepare you for the Assessment Centre as much as this book or attending one of the ISP Consultancy seminars that Ian runs.
He is a people person first and foremost, very knowledgeable and a really likeable guy. As far as I can see he is a big miss to the Police force as he simply knows the answer to everything put to him, in a very level-headed way.
If you want to give yourself the best chance of passing the Assessment Centre, quite simply buy this book!

Blackstones: Police Operational Handbook, 03 May 2008
This has to be one of the best purchases of my entire police career. I was contemplating waiting until the new edition was released (November 2008 I think) considering the rate that legislation and codes of practice are revised, but am very glad I made the purchase now. The second edition has been fully updated and is written in a short and 'to the point' style quickly highlighting the information a patrol officer would need. It is compact and fairly light-weight so again it gets 5 stars. Highly recomended to any current/trainee PC. This would be especially helpful to new PC's going through their initial training due to the short and concise manner in which it is written. It is an ideal revision aid.
It's all of Blackstones crammed into one book!, 03 Apr 2008
I have bought quite a few books to help me in my career as a PC and this is by far the best and most helpful. Excellent guide for interview planning, gives all the points to prove and more. Very easy to understand, highly recommended.
Blackstone's Police Operation Handbook, 23 Jul 2007
I learnt from friends that this is a very useful material and tool to have, I havent read it as yet.
Fantastic book for all your Police Duty needs!, 29 Apr 2007
I have been a Special Constable for only 6 months and when I came across this book I bought it straight away. I cannot say how much this has helped me understand the everyday law needed an officer is likely to encounter on the street. It has a very helpful points to prove for every offence and an easily laid out index to get to the bit you need. It has even got me interested in law!!! I recommend this to all in the Police service, PCSO's, PC's, SC and many many more will benefit from this book.
a must have purchase for all operational police officers, 28 Nov 2006
This is an informative and fully comprehensive guide, that has all the very useful atributes of Blackstones and the PNLD. Combined into an easily read and pocket sized book.
Fully indexed including both contents tables of statutes, which makes subjects easy to find.
This book would make an ideal stocking filler for Christmas Day.

Captures The Spirit, 30 Apr 2008
