Kallokain reviews: Business Stripped Bare, 07 Nov 2008
Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.co.uk/review/R34XCEWXTBLEZO Business Stripped Bare was refreshing, to say the least. A most enjoyable book. I hope the review shows why. I have included very brief chapter-by-chapter descriptions.
Nice to see someone actually doing what management experts have preached for decades. Also nice to see it work so well. Virgin Optimism, 01 Nov 2008
Regardless of who you are - one thing you have to admit is that Richard Branson oozes charisma, energy and vitality. Even looking at the front cover of the book he is given an exotic yet accessible quality. But enough of this hero worship on my part - what are my thoughts on the contents of the book?
Branson does not claim to be an academic businessman. What comes across in this book is his ethos and belief in the power of entrepreneurship. He covers such themes as Leadership, Brand and Social Responsiblity.
The book has of number of strengths. Throughout he uses stories to illustrate his points. My particular favourites were his tales regarding BA, Coco Cola and his initial set up of Virgin Money. So Branson avoids the situation that other business books fall into - using big words and leaving the reader none the wiser to what they are actually talking about.
A second strength of this book is that Branson portrays business not as an entity detached from his or our everyday lives. If used properly and ethically - it can be a source of great change. I reckon Branson and Adam Smith would have gotten on like a house on fire.
A third strength is Branson's ideas about self empowerment. We may think of Virgin as a monster sized company - whereas in fact it is made up of lots of smaller companies (aside from Virgin Atlantic which Branson readily admits is big). Branson states that the smaller companies avoid the problem of stagnation and each employee can stay energised and involved. Staying with this small scale approach - Branson illustrates how it can be used to tackle such problems as climate change. Correctly he states that large scale solutions often become bogged down.
However the book does have one issue. Branson is much more engaging when talking about the individuals that makes up his company and his relationship with them. The sections where he talks about the high profile individuals such as Al Gore, Clinton and Mandela - tend to get bogged down and I found my attention drifting. I got it that he thinks these guys are great - I just didnt need to read about it for the next 10 pages. Bit rich coming from me since I have just read 328 pages about my hero Branson!
Overall - a great book and with great messages.
The best message being "the brave may not live forever - but the cautious do not live at all". Branson does it again, 17 Oct 2008
A good book and whilst reading you can really imagine Richard Branson living and breathing his experience as a leader and entrepreneur. With this book you also gain a greater insight of Virgin as the brand and group of companies within the Virgin family. Branson is fairly honest about his setbacks and mistakes- although he doesnt talk about Virgin's part in its collusion with BA and how it got away with it. This omission makes me wonder about Virgin's business ethics in reality!!!
Overall a good read

Overall a good read Excellent, 13 Nov 2008
I would just like to say I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. It is clearly fantastic for people to read about how great businessmen succeed. However this book offers a lot more. I was absolutely amazed at the fact that James Caan is not just successful in business but dedicates so much time and money to extremely good causes. I find his drive, passion and enthusiasm to help less fortunate children a remarkable testament to his warm character. Quite frankly I guarantee whoever buys this book will enjoy reading it. It takes a lot to impress me and this book has inspired me. Even if you didn't enjoy it (which I am sure will not be the case) you are doing some good by assisting James's quest to raise money for underprivileged children throughout the world. I have now decided for Christmas I am buying a few copies for relatives!! Superb !, 08 Nov 2008
Having read many of these business tycoon type books over the past year I have to say this is the best by far. Really inspirational - Worth the money An inspiration, 05 Nov 2008
This book is your classic 'rags to riches' story with a difference. Here is a man that got rich by getting the best out of people; not your traditional route of finding an innovative product or making shrewd business deals.
James' real strenth was in identifying good people and motivating and inspiring them to work hard. This is such a rare attribute to come across in modern business and truly refreshing and inspiring. I have read many business and strategy text books, but this has been an important journey in my own development and something that no text book has ever touched on. As I progress through my management career, I will certainly adopt some of the techniques James has (naturally) developed to get the best out of my employees. Already I have started to adopt his sales strategy of asking lots of questions and 'painting a picture' and it works great.
Everyone can learn something from James, whether its his people development skills, approach to selling, or learning when to get out of a business. All in all, I highly recommend this book. A great success story, 03 Nov 2008
From nothing, James went on to build "a market-leading business with a turnover of more than 30 million pounds". It is an astonishing success story, finished the book within a couple of days, I couldn't put it down, Highly recommend for anyone at business school or in business, Brilliant!, 13 Oct 2008
This book is absolutely brilliant. James' life and story is an inspiration for anyone who wishes to be successful in business and life. Its a very inspiring read that left me charged up at the end! Whoever reads this should also read Duncan Bannantyne's book.

Product Description
Love him or loathe him, you've got to admit it, Richard Branson has drive. And guts. And enough ambition to sink a battleship--or perhaps that should be a jumbo jet--or even a whole company of jumbos if the Virgin Atlantic/British Airways debacle (which takes up a huge chunk of this already huge tome) is anything to go by. Branson's autobiography makes immensely fascinating reading. Whatever you think of Britain's most famous entrepreneur, the odds are that you will enjoy reading his autobiography. You may snort at descriptions of his "poor" childhood--spent eating bread and dripping while living in a house the majority of us visit on Bank Holidays and attending a "minor" public school. You may groan at memories of early initiative tests: how about being ejected from the family car and told by his mother to find his way home--at the age of four? You may flinch at accounts of his early business days as an unwashed, unshod, hippy magazine publisher living en famille with his staff in the crypt of a West London church. But, all in all, you'll get to understand where the guy's coming from--man. And, like the man himself, there's no holds barred here. Richard bares his soul, from childhood, school days (cheating at exams), loves and losses (lost one wife when a spot of wife-swapping went drastically wrong--for him), death-defying adventures (yes, the balloons are all there), to the rise and rise of the Virgin empire. His interviews for Student magazine and the early days of Virgin Music read like a chronicle of popular music and culture in the late 20th century. Famous names bounce off every page. Prepare to be enthralled by the life and times of a walking publicity machine. --Carey Green

I bought this book whilst I was traveling in Asia and found mysef unable to put in down. The book goes right from his boarding school days right through to him setting up the world elders. Although the book leaves out no detail I thought that there would be more on his actual thoughs and feelings. However I would recomed this book to anyone it's full of adventure both in bussiness and Bransons record attemts. U cant read this book without loving his attitude and making u feel like there's something we all can do to change the world. A truly well written and unlifting book. Very Exciting!, 09 Oct 2008
I got this book at an airport (seem to buy a lot of books in airports!) It was a brilliant read. I could not wait to pick the book up in between holiday stuff!
The only thing I found a little irritating was the fact that Richard Branson seems to write with a real self indulgance. It would be nice to read about his life in a bit more of an unbiased way. But hey who am I to critise a man who has made millions!! Excellent, 02 Sep 2008
I loved this book. Branson is so honest throughout. He's an amzing person. I could not put the book down from start to finish! Losing My Virginity: The Autobiography, 17 Jun 2008
Losing My Virginity: The Autobiography. This was gift, I kept putting it off before reading. Once I started I could not put it down. A great book, very well written and interesting. Its time for the updated version or book two. Jewels of wisdom from Richard, I just craved more!, 03 May 2008
I'm glad I read this book, the chronology of it flows exceptionally and it's like finding a real gem of understanding reading his anecdotes and reactions to situations that come his way. The most interesting parts for me was understanding his business start-up and development (the first half I would say), this could sell the book on its own.
Problems: Ok, I'm not sure about everyone else's reasons, but the reasons why I chose to read this book in the first place was to understand how and why Mr Branson approaches business in the way he does and what EXACTLY his methodology and thought processes are/were. Perhaps it's curiosity, tips, self-evaluation, whatever. Anyway, all the other peripheral stuff like his ballooning trips (multiple and repetitive) and the social conscience he develops and promotes toward the end just really slow down the momentum of the book.
I guess I wanted consistent and unadulterated nitty gritty insight into the grey matter of a stupendously successful businessman but there were only snippets and cryptic clues throughout that verged on frustrating. But whatever, it's Richard: he and his philosophies are awesome and you should buy this book just to contribute to the Virgin Empire.

I bought a number of start-up books to help get to grips with starting my new business. This was by far the best. I still refer back to it. It is well written and informative throughout. (So good, I felt compelled to write my first ever Amazon review.) Guiding you on the way.., 17 Oct 2007
My wife bought this book for me to help me achieve a dream.
Without a doubt, I'd not be so far advanced and positive about a small business future without it.
Cheryl holds your hand and guides you through each step of the start-up process. All your considerations, your ideas and even doubts are discussed. Even better, there's practical exercises to get your thoughts going and push you forward.
The advice and exerpts from successes and failures of business provide excellent ideas, inspiration and guidance.
If you buy just one book to help you start your business - make it this one. If you want to start your own business...this is a must read, 12 Apr 2007
A brilliant book. It explains every detail of what you need to start up a business. It also gives you tips from well known personnel from big firms about starting up and the challenges and hurdles you will face along the way. I am now more than prepared to start my own business... A must read for any entrepeneur. An excellent workbook - all you need to know to start-up, 20 Feb 2006
I've bought most of the top 10 business books and have found this to be the best one - partly because it is so easy to read and digest, partly because of the pearls of wisdom from well-known entrepreneurs (including the lessons learned sections about what they'd do differently with hindsight) and partly because of all the really useful exercises peppered throughout that get you to do something practical to drive the business forward. Congrats to the author on a truly inspiration read that incites action. Can't recommend this book highly enough! This book is the Business!!!, 04 Oct 2005
This book is absolutely superb!! It really gives you a unique insight into what's required in running a successful business. Cheryl really knows what she is talking about. There are millions of books out there on how to start your own business, but I think this one really does stand out from the crowd. A pleasant and enjoyable read. Keep up the good work Cheryl!!!!

Best book I've read in a while, 15 Nov 2008
Superbly Practical, 13 Oct 2008
Great book because of the way its layed out ..., 07 Mar 2008
Thought this was a great book. The way it takes you through a week by week step makes it very easy to understand and he gives you some very useful contacts. I reckon with the majority of people who read this they will feel much more comfortable and at ease in starting a business. Not for me!, 30 Dec 2007
One week to understand suppliers, one week to consider the management team! A whole week to think about your dream. Get real, no business is going to get off the ground on these deadlines. Its the kind of book to gift to someone who is considering self-employment. As a tool it is weak and except for the odd chapter here and there didn't tell me what I needed to know. Very disappointed, will probably try to re-sell as it is not worth book shelf space. Start a business with this book, 15 Dec 2006
So you're thinking of starting, going to start or already started a business.
Then you should read this book. It helps by breaking down the process of starting a business into bite sized chunks that as the title suggests can be eaten week by week.
It's full of useful information and is backed up by a great online community flyingstartups.com with it's very own podcasts that has been set up by the author, whom you can tell is also passionate about the members of the site and their businesses and or ideas.

electrical-concepts.co.uk Best Books for Business Starts, 16 Mar 2006
This book along with THE BLACK BOOK OF OUTSOURCING (Brown & Wilson, Wiley Publishers 2005) gave us the best start we could as for. If you're starting a business, don't go another step without reading these two books. They will put you on track to successes you didn't even know possible. Great books!
If you buy 1 book on starting up your own business buy this, 02 Feb 2006
Thought other readers might like to know that we agree with every comment left by my fellow reviewers. This is a book which assumes you know nothing (we didn't) but by the time of finishing you are left with a very clear idea and (hopefully) plan on how to turn your idea into a reality. It holds your hand and walks you through a 20+ week plan to turn your initial "shall we / shan't we" thoughts of starting up your own business into a reality. It's written in simple and easy to understand language - it never baffles and has some great tips. It doesn't presume to have all the answers and offers alternative sources of information at the end of each chapter, as appropriate to the activities for that week. Well done Steve for writing a great book. I never thought that we could actually run our own business but after reading your book we really believe we can - and a succesful business at that.

A worthy investment, 15 Oct 2008
I'm not an entrepreneur and have no intention of becoming one (at least not yet!), however I found this a fascinating and inspiring read. You don't have to be in business to benefit from the advice dispensed in this book, it can be applied to people's day to day lives as well, which is what makes it really great.
It's an eye opening read and makes you think about the world, and yourself, differently. After all, entrepreneurs see opportunities where you and I see everyday things and the more you read about them, the more their mannerisms and philosophies begin to rub off on you. So if you're looking for an injection of inspiration and motivation in your life, look no further.
underwhelming - should have different title..., 02 Oct 2008
This is a book of success stories, each about 4-5 pages long. Its nice to read these stories, but if you're looking for real "how to" jewels of wisdom for making it in business yourself (as you might expect from the title), I'd say look elsewhere. I think its impossible to impart any real wisdom in the few pages given to each success story. Still, its nice to see that these people have done it!
Outstanding inspiration!, 08 Dec 2007
With phrases such as "failure cannot live with persistance" and / or ideas like "invent the rules", Rachel Bridge presents a brilliant short stories' collection of people who one day woke up and decided that was it, that was the day they were paying a fair (or unfair) price for taking control of their own destinies. That's just the way you will learn how 40 successful brit companies, among those Bighams, Daily Bread, The Ice Box, Dating Direct, Green Baby, PJ Smothies, Reef One, The People Book, etc.were born and came to be... inspiring book, brilliantly written (summed up) and easily asimilated... get it and read it, satisfaction guaranteed! Actually, I cannot wait to receive her second book "My Big Idea"...
Recommended, 15 Jul 2007
If you need inspiration or are just having a hard time of things in your bussiness then I can suggest picking this up. It really helps to know that other people, normal people have all been through it before and makes you carry on. It made me keep going and and as they say every little helps! No, seriously its o.k, just don't expect any advice on how to, more along the lines of don't give up!!
The perfect present, 29 Jun 2007
I love this book. I have read it about a million times and I still find it really inspiring. I have bought a copy for all my friends. It makes me think that one day I could start up a business and make it a big success too. I probably won't but it is nice to dream! I also really like Rachel Bridge's other book My Big Idea. It is in the same kind of format as this one but is more about where people got their ideas for their business from.

Superbly Practical, 13 Oct 2008

Very useful..., 03 Nov 2008
Useful and practical advice by a man who knows his business inside out. Well written and a pleasure to read, I would recommend this book to anyone interested in retailing.

If you can only afford one book to help you with your retail business - GET THIS ONE!
I have used it as a basis for training days with my staff and these have been amongst the most successful we have run in 4 years. It has helped to re-energise and re-focus all our efforts, so that everyone knows - and buys into - where we are going and how we will get there. I shall be buying a copy for each one of my permanent staff team!
very interesting reading, 12 Jul 2007
My girlfriend and I have opened up a clothes store recently and are working hard to let it survive the first few difficult years. Although this book gives many tips for bigger stores, I have found great insights and tips that make it valuable for us to try and stay ahead of the competion.
For team members and managers in any job, anywhere.., 07 Mar 2006
I purchased this book after being offered a managerial role in retail. Knowing little about the industry, I was looking for a book that could tell me everything... from shop floor to staffing. This book not only taught me all I needed to know but gave me confidence and passion to go ahead and be a great team member. I made notes all over it as by page 2 I knew I wasn´t going to be passing it on to anyone else! Easy reference, interesting to read - I took it on holiday - excellent section on people management and lots of information and advice that would apply to most office jobs, work teams and managers everywhere, not just in the retail industry. Also written by a normal guy who has had a long and successful career in retail, not a stuffy professor with a PhD. Thoroughly recommended.
If you're in a hurry, this is for you!, 22 Dec 2005
I bought this just as we were opening our first shop. It's quick to read, makes sense and is easy to remember. Even so, I still have it by the bed and go back to it when I need some new ideas. I just wish there was a number 2 version with more detail. Loved it.

Best book I've read in a while, 15 Nov 2008
