Perfect for KS2, 31 Jul 2008
My son needed something more than his picture dictionary, but not so large he lost interest in looking a word up - and this is perfect.
The only down side is the size (A5) and being a hardback, it is a little heavy for carrying around on a daily basis.
Fantastic resource for all children, 09 Oct 2000
This dictionary was recommended by my mother - a primary teacher over over 20 years experience as the best infant dictionary around. Having purchased it - I can only agree. Fully supports the National Curiculum.

good for all the family, 05 Feb 2006
I bought this for my five year old as he is becoming aware of language. But after ten minutes the whole family was gripped and making up poetry and nonsense rhymes. The telly went off and we discovered a new game which we have played many nights since. Well worth the price.
What a great classroom resource!, 20 Nov 2003
This is a great little book, crammed full of rhyming words - extremely useful for teachers as well as children! It's bright, attractive presentation makes it easy to use and it also includes lots of original poems, rhymes and verses, dotted on appropriate pages. It's great for the classroom as it's organized in 'spelling patterns' so the children need never be stuck for a rhyme again! (It could prove useful for generating spelling lists too!!) My Year 2 class just love it!!

My daughter has really enjoyed using this book and has written many poems since receiving it. There are "starts" at the back of the book, containing the first few lines of a poem, and the reader is invited to finish them. This helped to get into different poetry styles and was a good confidence builder. A great, fun way of increasing your childs vocabulary, writing skills and creativity.

Childrens encyclodedia thats fun, 12 Jul 2003
I bought this book for my daughter for christmas, and she has used it for homework and for finding out information for her own use. Each entry has colour photographs and good quality information written in easy to understand language. It is colourful and has a 'how to use this book' at the beginning plus an easy to read world history section at the back. I would recommend this book to any chidlren and adults to use as reference or general reading.

Very helpful and full of useful and practical stuff, 01 Oct 2000
Beginner's Spanish Dictionary is a really useful, handy dictionary, especially for beginners, and kids. It includes many very practical, everyday words and phrases, and I found that it was easy to use and read, because of it's cartoons and also because of the way it had been written. I recommend it whether you are just beginning, or even if you have a knowledge of some Spanish already. It's also very good for use as a teaching tool/supplement.

Russian and English, Picture It, 07 Dec 2001
This is the third copy of The New Oxford Picture Dictionary: English-Russian Edition that I have bought. Several Russian friends now use it and are giving another copy as a Christmas gift. Its terrific: well organized, clearly illustrated and it comes with a pronunciation guide. What more could you ask for in a picture dictionary? Its the recognized standard.

OK, but black & white illustrations only, 29 Sep 2008
A nice book at a good price, but beware - all the pictures are line drawings in black and white only. It would be most suitable for older children who might enjoy colouring in the pictures as they learn the words...
For younger children the Usborne 'First Thousand Words in Chinese' book is probably much better.
Both books, however, suffer from the problem that the scenes are Western with Chinese tacked on - so specifically Chinese items and scenes are missing. There's definitely room in the market for a word book based on specifically Chinese pictures!

Words form around the world at your fingertips!, 06 Aug 2001
So, you want to learn a few Italian words? You need a way of making your Italian phrases better... you're just interested in the world that is The Italian Language. Then, this book is for you. It's not a definitive guide or anything- far from it. It's merely a fun (and by that I mean, I read it for pleasure) way to familiarise yourself with a few Italian words and phrases. Divided into sections such as 'Getting up','In the Kitchen' and 'Travelling by plane and boat', the book show you a beautifully (or at least I think so!) picture, and the words come out from the picture- adjectives and nouns for the objects, verbs for what the characters are doing. On each page, the drawings are labelled. And then, in a box to the side all the words are reproduced with the English translation, which is incredibly handy. But the reason I haven't given this book the full five stars stems from the fact that the order in which these words have been placed in the box sometimes seems to be a bit detached from the picure- or maybe just not the easiest way to read. But this is by no means a hindering factor. It's probably just as well as it slows you down a tiny bit! Pronounciation rules are at the front- though, it's always best to hear words spoken aloud- not that this guide isn't excellent. There's Grammar Hints and a Phrase Explainer, as well as a three-way index- English, Italian and pronounciation. I really like this kind of fun-to-read dictionary. I feel that anyone interested should give it a try becuase it's worth it. Molto bene!
