A bit disappointing, 24 Feb 2008
Although the price is low I did expect more from this Dictionary because it is an Oxford, it seems to be lacking in depth.
Comprehensive And Detailed Information, 17 Oct 2005
This slim volume details not only characters from the Bible but a background to the theology and customs of the cultures of the Biblical lands. It provides clear Biblical references and is useful as it gives a clear background to the contexts in which the books of the Old and New Testaments were written. Whilst not being comprehensive; it has no reference to 'The Nephilim', for example; it is a good value and highly useful resource for those who wish to explore the background to The Bible in any depth.

Well worth your money, 18 Jul 2005
I purchased this book as like countless other people my daughter was turned down for the school of our choice, i found that there was hardly any information available on how to lodge a decent school appeal. What this book does is guide you through the process from start to finish, it gives you pointers on things to include in your appeal, whether you have a strong case, things to reasearch in order to give you a strongr case, how to word your appeal and what to expect at the hearing. What it doesn't do is give you false hope, if you haven't got a case then it becomes quite clear that there isn't much chance of being successful. It becomes quite clear that there are strict guidlines to the admission process and if you do not fall within the criteria then the odds are stacked against you. Having said that the appeal i lodged was much better written and worded than if i hadn't purchased this book. So if your looking for information on what to expect during this stressful process then this is the book for you,but dont expect it to contain miracles or a sure fire way to get your child into the school of your choice.
Fantastic!, 08 Mar 2005
What a life saver. Our daughter was turned down for a place and we had no idea about how to appeal or anything. The school was no help. This book has told us everything. I can't thank the author enough. Fingers crossed for the hearing, but we are MUCH more confident of success than we were. THank you.

Great buy., 17 Oct 2005
I have found this book helpful, informative but most important of all the author Carl Sifakis does not under or overestimate the effect that the Mafia had on society or the importance of ethnic groups within modern crime. I have read many books on American crime and each author over estimates the importance of the ethnic group he/she is writing about e.g. books on Irish-American crime tend to exaggerate their impact on the Mafia. Carl Sifakis does not do this. He freely (In my opinion) admits for example the equal importance of the Jews (In relation to the Italians) on the Mafia citing Meyer Lansky as the true Godfather of the modern Mafia. I would recommend any one with an interest in the Mafia to by this book.

I don't want to completely slate this book I gave you a brief review earlier saying that I thought it was good for a general overview you need to read this carefully then(PLEASE NOTE I HAD JUST STARTED TO READ IT AND I HAD ONLY REACHED PAGE 36).This encyclopedia is riddled throughout with historical innaccuracys, heck even thats too good a term to describe it and one of you talked about it being written by somebody who knows the field, maybe for the present day but not for the past, blimey Pittsburgh Phil would have cringed, where does it say in Puggy Feinsteins autopsy report that he received injurys from an ice axe? I would dearly love to know! yes there was an ice axe present but it was never used "Kid Twists" testimony put paid to actually what happened along with what "Dukey Maffetore" testified that he saw, I could go on forever about the inaccuracys but hey as a very brief overview of a mobsters life in crime its ok just remember not to take it all at face value due to the all too frequent slip ups. I've read many many books on the mafia before I took it upon myself to read this, to be honest I wish i'd never read it a complete waste of my time.
the mafia encyclopedia cracking facts, 19 Jun 2003
This is the best book i've come across so far in terms of the Mafia, it really gives you a background context I would say that it would be more useful to the amateur or enthusiast mob watcher but not to an avid expert, who prefers books focused on a specific section of the mafia.
This is an excellent book!, 14 Aug 1999
There is tons of information in the Mafia Encyclopedia. Also in it are a lot of great, hard to find photos. If you are interested in organized crime, this book is for you!
The Mafia Encyclopedia Is A Wonderful Book., 09 Aug 1999
Within the 400 pages of information it contains, there are dozens of descriptions of mobsters and Mafia events, almost one hundred rare photos, and much more. Just by reading this book, you can become an expert on the subject of the Mafia. Everything you would ever want to know is in it.

Superb elucidation of the beginnings of the Byzantine Empire, 23 Nov 2007
Apart from the reproduction of an autograph of Theodosius himself, this (for me) has the supreme merit of concerning itself with the nature of bilingualism in the eastern empire. It is a commonplace that Latin remained the official imperial language, even in the East, where Greek was overwhelmingly predominant. Here we find explored the exact nature of the relationship: Latin was used within the bureaucracy, and is the only language in which laws are set down. But these laws are translated and promulgated to those outside the system in Greek. So were the officials truly bilingual? And what was the process by which Greek speakers acquired a knowledge of Latin? Unfortunately, ancient references to Latin teaching in the East are rare, but one is left with the distinct impression that however proficient the officials were at the written Latin of their chancery, they would have found it diffucult holding down a spoken conversation.

A handy legal guide, 05 Jan 2006
Kermit Hall, editor of the Oxford Companion to the Supreme Court of the United States, is also editor of this volume that looks specifically at the cases. This book does have an appendix with basic information such as lists of Justices, but for the most part, this book is really a compilation of short articles that deal with the major cases of the Supreme Court. This guide contains hundreds of major cases that set important precedents for later courts, lower courts and society at large to follow. From early pivotal cases such as Marbury v. Madison, which set the precedent of judicial supremacy in Constitutional review, to the more recent cases such as Brown v. Board of Education (striking down 'separate but equal' arrangements), Miranda v. Arizona (setting up the popularly-known 'Miranda rights'), and Roe v. Wade. Unfortunately, this book was published before the monumental Bush v. Gore decision (Hall discusses this in his other Oxford Companion) - hopefully it will be included in a later edition. Each decision includes a description of the key issues, the opinion of the court, those who concur, significant dissents and attendant issues that might arise. This text also includes insights into the significant personalities of the Supreme Court, facts and trivia about the Supreme Court, and more. However, these are interesting incidentals, not detracting from the primary purpose of the text, which is to show the decisions themselves. The text includes an index of cases as well as an index of topics. This is a very useful text for those who need a quick, ready reference to the cases, particularly student of law, criminal justice, or political science.
