Good improvements in this 4th edition of a popular text, 13 Oct 2005
This new edition of a core text for students of horticulture is welcomed. The addition of colour plates is helpful and the layout has generally improved. I think the book does a difficult job well as the subject is huge and it must be very difficult to decide what to leave out and how much depth to go to. I'm hoping it will help me with the RHS Advanced Cerificate exam.
Good companion guide to RHS General Certificate studies, 21 Dec 2003
I'm pretty happy with this book. Having decided to do Horticulture studies by correspondence in Switzerland, this book came up when searching for some pre-study material. It is also first book off the list of recommended reading from my school, which I'm pleased to see. It provides further in-depth reading to the course material provided, although my one whinge is that it could expand its chapter on pests and diseases as there are so many covered in the course. Happily websites like the RHS help out here. However, this book is fine foundation reading.

if you are intrested in any part of horticulture for a hobby or study, this is a must have every thing is explained in full in terms that any one would understand. And this is a up dated one.
brillant, 27 Nov 2001
I have read the 2nd edition but this one is much better they keep adding more information. if you are into gardening of any type this is the book to have. Very easy to read.
Highly recommended for students and professionals, 14 Nov 2000
This book provides a valuable introduction to horticulture. The information covered is wide ranging, explained clearly and is accompanied on many occasions by useful pictures and diagrams. This text was useful to me on the HNC/HND (Horticulture) course and also occasionally during my horticultural degree. The book would also be of interest to many horticuural professionals. There are not currently enough text books available specifically for horticultural students so this book is a valuable one.

I found this book very informative and well put together. It has excellent photograrphs and discriptions of how to tend to the chickens. A must if you are to keep chickens. Recommended!, 30 Jun 2005
I thoroughly recommend this book. There is a wealth of information crammed into its modest size, making it a must-have for chicken keepers; beginners and old-hands alike. It enters into adequate detail for most keepers' day-to-day needs regarding housing, health etc., but (hence the 4/5 rating), you may wish to buy some more specialised books on the above to find more in-depth information. The breed section is excellent, giving far more detail (and photos) than any other book I've read. The info included is relevant and up-to-date, which is great if you've not got the time to trawl through specialist breed books. This book is a visual treat, having a simple but effective layout, and of course being packed full of high quality, captioned photos of every breed featured. There are a number of mistakes in the allocation of the captions, but we can forgive them for that, considering the amount of photos to be captioned! Overall, a great read at a great price!
Complete Encyclopedia of Chickens, 06 Jan 2005
its a good value for money book for some one who just started to have an interest in chickens and helps to decide which breed suits them best i brought a coppy and found it came in vary handy in all aspects of chicken keeping from ailments to breeding

Extremely funny but helpful with practical ideas and advice, 25 Apr 1999
As I was standing at my double patio doors with my nose pressed to the window watching the squirrels raiding my bird feeders, I became so agitated I abruptly jerked the door open to scare them off and banged myself in the mouth with my door. I decided at that moment to wage war. Although I haven't won yet, the book offers good advice on how I can get revenge without doing bodily injury to the little monsters.
Squirrels will overtake the world, 12 Apr 1999
This book is a great thing. Squirrels must be stopped now for they are evil and are planning to take over the world. Beware!
Excellent. Solid, practical advice with humor and style., 03 Mar 1999
We all love those furry little creatures but there comes a time when you must say "enough." With wit and humor, Bill Adler offers practical advice on how to keep squirrels from ruining your fun, hurting your lawn and gardens and taking food from the bird feeder. It's a must for anyone who owns a home.
Funny and Informative, 26 Feb 1999
I love both birds and squirrels. I don't mind feeding the squirrels, I just don't want them destroying my bird feeders. With the help of this book I was able to set up a bird feeding station that was safe from squirrels but also had a ground feeder just for them. It's a great book.
Funny, good, and wise... what more do you want?, 24 Nov 1998
Hey, I like and feed the little rodents myself, but they're party crashers in the bird world. Our feeder says very clearly: "Bird Station." Furry rats need not apply. This is not merely a good read but a funny book. Mr. Adler has scored five stars from me, even before I read about Rosie O'Donnell's rave.

Awesome!!, 04 Aug 2008
An incredible amount of information packed with superb photos makes the last edition of the "Bible" a compulsory reading for growers and an interesting and funny one for the general public.
As an indoor grower I've found an answer to every single question arised while growing in this book, everything is covered : lamps, soils, seeds, hash making, how to make and mend many things, ....Besides the quality and number of photos makes the reading enjoyable and helps to understand key matters in an easy way.
The only suggestion I will make is that for future editions you may consider to include a chapter on specific matters on how to grow in a Home-box. An increasing number of people living in flats tends to use this options rather than filling a complete room with girls for practical reasons ( mainly lack of space ). With a chapter dealing with this the book would just be outstanding.
my review, 03 Mar 2008
this is the one of very few grow books that is suitable for seasoned growers as well as beginners. no poncy terminology either just written in plain English on nice professional glossy pages. really does explain everything you need to know to get a great grow going. photos on every page, packed full of useful information without all the packing drivvle that a lot of grow books have. i bought this ages ago and i still go back to it when i need to find something out. its all laid out nicely so it can be use again for reference easily. i own loads of grow books and this one is the best by far. if your looking to buy a grow book and you havnt got this one yet, get this one now, you will not be disappointed
SUPERB - a must buy, 06 Nov 2007
If you're going to buy one grow book THIS IS IT! While it lacks some sepcific details you may want (e.g. blueprints for cabinets) and suffers from some bad editing, typesetting and occasional misprints it is TRULY SUPERB. The best problem/solution diagnosis section of any book (which CAN save your grow!), loads of colour, well organised incredibly thorough. You will be ready to grow at the end of this - but you may be hungry for more! I'd recommend Greg Green as the perfect partner, and getting online!!!
BIBLE, 13 Sep 2007

A sticky green-thumbs up for Jorge!, 30 Mar 2006
This new edition of the growers bible has definitely made a giant leap in quality. The vast and well researched information has been made comprehensible and pleasantly visual thanks to a fun, clear narration sided by numerous color diagrams and images. Not only does it help you step by step in understanding the plant and its cultivation but also gives you oodles of practical advice only on-hands experience can provide. Excellent and very informative guide in an easy-to-read and visually explanatory method of transmitting the multitude of information needed in a growers manual.

An excellent guide to growing fruit by the RHS, 15 Jan 2006
I have found this to be an invaluable book which I have used together with the Fruit Expert by Dr Hessayon. The latter is in full colour and is probably a superior guide to choosing your fruit trees and bushes with descriptions, colour pictures and ratings of lots of varieties. The RHS book is aimed at the planting, pruning and care of your fruits once chosen (although it does have short descriptions of the more popular varieties but no pictures of them). This book is in black and white and one other colour but this doesn't really detract from the numerous beatiful drawings. It has comprehensive detail with illustrations on planting and long term care of your fruit trees/ bushes. In particular it has illustrations of pruning for each fruit and each year of growth of that fruit in each of the growing styles available (eg illustrations of how to prune maiden, 2yr, 3yr, 4yr old trees, cordons, fans, pyramids, espaliers for apples with different illustrations for each fruit covered). This scores significantly over the fruit expert book which is much more limited in this regard with very generalised pruning techniques which you have to try and extrapolate to different types of fruit and different years of growth.
In summary an excellent book once you have chosen which variety to plant.
The first book to own if you want to grow fruit in yourself., 09 May 2000
The book is very well presented, with good pictures, photographs and text. Included are all the old favorites plus quite a few unusual or exotic fruits. The RHS get top marks for providing all the information that you will need to successfully grow fruit and presenting it in a very easy to understand way. Whether you are a beginner or a dedicated horticulturalist this book is definately one for the potting shed.

GREAT BOOK - needs some supplementing but best for the beginner, 06 Nov 2007
THis book is superb, while a few reviewers say it is too vaguye on some things and too specific on others (which is true - it has to be vague on some areas where the grower has to use their own judgement, there is no recipe or 12-astep programme you must respod to your plants!)
Very light on its hydropoincs stuff - but in my view this makes it a FANTASTIC book for a beginner, taking you through all the key areas and giving you a good, easy and forgiving method of growing (soil) rather than tryinjg to elarn about growing and hydro all at once. That said his hydro section is one of the clearest and best illustrated overviews I've seen - nbot a detailed how to but a great starter.
THe book doesn't quite attain truly biblical level - I'd highly recommend partnering it with Jorge Cervantes 'Bible' as the two work perfectly in harmony with the areas of vagueness in one being more than compensated for by the detail in the other. If I had to choose just one it'd be TOUGH! If you're thinking of building a cabinet and going indoor this is the better of the two, if you're going big indoor or outdoor Jorge wins, but really buy them both!
The Most Important Marijuana Book Ever, 29 Sep 2006
This is the most important Marijuana book ever. It is totally and absolutely unique. There is nothing else like it and everybody is copying it. If you haven't read this book then go look up the Cannabis Breeder's Bible and find out that the author is a Cannabis genetics expert with enough high yielding potent cultivation experience and photographs to back up everything. This is the book that changed the nature of the game. Indoor grows in the UK are indebted to this book and its author for changing the times. Potent resin plenty dense crisp crackling buds is what we want and this is exactly what the book delivers on every time.
NOT ALL THAT GREAT, 24 Aug 2006
[]...author's opinoin i suppose...it is to technical in some part and too vague in others...i really doubt the author has 20 years experience...the growing experience does not come through in the book...poor photos...save your money and look at other books ...[]
An all important guide, A must buy., 23 Feb 2006
Firstly, this book will convince without any doubt that cannabis should be legal. Greg Green is a user himself but despite that he gives a no bulls**t approach to the whole subject. Secondly the book is excellently writen providing both the pratical and theoriatical knowledge to grow fantastic plants in your own home! The step by step process is logical and the numerous pictures provide invaluable information on nearly every topic mentioned. I really can't stress how great a read this book is and how much it has helped me. You name a reallated subject with cannabis and its in this book. I promise.
Informative and a Fantastic Read, 02 Dec 2005
I have bought several books to do with the growing, cultivation and breeding of the recreational drug cannabis and have found this one to be by far the most informative and detailed description on such a large variety of topics which are involved in these three processes. As soon as I received the book opened it up and read it straight away. I must say that the diagrams and colour printed step by step guides where fantastic to see even though I am experienced in some of them I felt it revealing to see a how it 'should' be done and the useful tips which would help some of the most experienced of people in these subjects. Amust have for any cannabis conorsuer. YOU NEED IT!!!!!!!

However, this book is fine foundation reading. brillant, 23 Jan 2002
if you are intrested in any part of horticulture for a hobby or study, this is a must have every thing is explained in full in terms that any one would understand.
Complete Encyclopedia of Chickens, 21 Feb 2008
It's a must for anyone who owns a home.

excellent book, 18 Sep 2007
I started my own business up in May this year and wish I'd bought this book alot earlier. It is excellent and anyone wanting to start up their own business should buy it. The advice given is great and from my own experience I know exactly where he is coming from. It has been through more luck than judgement that I did set up the business the way he suggests in the book. Personally, I wouldn't have set it up any other way because it really gives you a foundation to start from. It has certainly given me alot of ideas to work on and I know I'll always be rereading this book.
Covers all bases on starting your own gardening business... great book., 05 Mar 2007
My wife and I have followed this book to a tee and have found that it covers all bases in starting your own gardening business, right down to the accountancy side of it. We are now at the point where work is starting to come in and we are about to go at it full-time.
Thanks for your help Paul.

YOU NEED IT!!!!!!!
excellent book, 18 Sep 2007

Building Chicken Coops , 27 Aug 2008
More like a 30 page pamphlet than a book, disappointing,no designs more information available on the web :-(
Not bad for the money, BUT............, 31 Mar 2008
More about building chicken coops would have been handy! This booklet is made up of extracts from a larger book on keeping wildfowl. Lots of good info but doesn't deliver what the title promised.

It provides further in-depth reading to the course material provided, although my one whinge is that it could expand its chapter on pests and diseases as th | | |
