Superb Dilbert collection. The *one* to have., 03 Jan 2009
If you only ever own one Dilbert, make it this one.
Yes, it's a large hardcover volume so is a rather hefty 4 kg or so. But there is a lot of years (spread across several eras) worth of Dilbert and some background material too. If you're reading this you're probably already a fan of Dilbert. If you buy no other Dilbert, buy this one!
Amazing collection for any Dilbert fan, 29 Dec 2008
Even after reading the great reviews, I was still amazed when I received this in the mail today. This is an incredible collection which any Dilbert fan will treasure.
The description and previous review give a great idea of what is contained within and I can only agree.
And apart from that, this is a collectors piece which will fit in any library as it is very tastefully done.
Well done Scott!

The product description here does not do this magnificent collection justice - to lift and shift from the better description on the US Amazon:
"This special slipcased collection--weighing in at more than ten pounds with 600 pages and featuring almost 4,000 strips--takes readers behind the scenes and into the early days of Scott Adams's life pre-Dilbert and on to the success that followed when Dilbert became an internationally syndicated sensation.
Divided into five different epochs, Dilbert 2.0 gives readers a glance at some of Adams's earliest strips, like those created for Playboy, and a peek at an abundance of special content ranging from numerous rejection letters to Adams's first cartooning check, and more.
Adams personally selected the material for this collection and offers original comments and humorous asides throughout. Also included is a piracy-protected disc that contains every Dilbert comic strip to date and that can be updated as new cartoons are released"
This is a fantastic bit of work, worth the money just for the book, but to also get the disc with every single strip published to date is a real bonus. To those of us who endure an office based life, Scott Adams sees straight through the nonsense and produces cartoons that makes you wonder if he is sitting in on your Board meetings.
If you are a fan (and if not, why not?) then this collection is an absolute must.
Dilbert gets the Deluxe treatment, 29 Oct 2008
Like many of the recent Dilbert releases this is reusing the old material, BUT this is something special. It's a nicely bound huge book (9pounds, over 4kg) with a sturdy slipcover.
Collection starts with small biography of Scott Adams along with drawings from his childhood and adult life before Dilbert. Then it's divided into different "ages" of Dilbert, as in the early strips it really wasn't a workplace comic and then evolves into workplace and so on.
Collection has over 2 000 strips from the 6000+ Dilbert catalog. Included on the back page of the book is also a DVD containing every single strip from 1989 to 2008 and a code that allows you to download future strips from their site.

Fantastic!, 17 Aug 2008
Brilliant. Just Brilliant. I've always loved the cartoons, but with this collection I got far more than I expected. As below, when I ordered this I was prepared for something slightly bigger than a DVD boxed set - what I got is a collection about A4 height (from there you can probably get an idea of scale from the picture supplied) and packed solid with cartoons. Apart from the obligatory Author's introduction, each page contains 4 regular strips or one large colour strip. The books are well finished and give the impression that, well treated, they will last a lifetime of reading. The paper is thick and durable, which adds to the weight of the collection but you won't be accidentaly tearing pages while flicking through. In fact, the whole thing seems to have been designed with longevity in mind.
I won't go on about how good the cartoons are - if you're looking at this item you probably already know that. If not, the fact so many people have forked out £40-60 for the privilege of owning it should be evidence enough. What I can say is that if you know you're looking for a collection of Calvin and Hobbes cartoons, the price of this collection is fully justified by the build quality. It would make an excellent gift or, as in my case, an excellent bit of self-indulgence, and will give years of smiles and laughter.
Well worth it's weight!, 24 Jun 2008
The other reviews here pretty much say it all... if you are a fan of Calvin and Hobbes, you are going to love this! And, if you are already a fan, you will undoubtedly own a few worn-out copies of the various collections. I already have most, if not all of the books;
what makes this special and worth having (..in addition!) is the beautiful presentation, in chronological order, of all the strips, with the large cover art added throughout.
It is big, it is heavy, but bearing in mind that it will probably stay put and be well looked after, I don't see any problem with this! It's obviously not intended to be lugged about as your sole copy, and it's nice to have a nice hardback volume to sit and read. If you want portable, take one of your paperbacks. If you want your favourite (and the best, most imaginative, philosophical, entertaining cartoon strip ever) in 3 well-made volumes, then you should really add this to your bookshelf. I just did, having read the previous reviews, and I love it already!
(I've read Calvin and Hobbes through many times, and they just don't date either.. Calvin's comments about the advertising industry, and his Dad's views about t.v, the media, traffic etc are as funny and relevant today as when they were written.)
Not much more to say... if you love Calvin and Hobbes, this collection really is well worth it's weight.
When cartoons grew up, 23 May 2008
I just got back from my post office here in Oslo Norway. The little woman who went back to get this package for me looked less than thrilled. This is HEAVY!
Well, anyhow, I just had my first look at this and it's stunning. Calvin and Hobbes deserve no less.
1987. It's been that many years since I was in Denmark on holiday and bought my first volume of Calvin and Hobbes? (Steen & Stoffer in Danish, Tommy & Tigern in Norwegian). Wow, how time flies.
Calvin and Hobbes have been a great influence on me. I have tried and failed over the years to be a cartoonist or graphic artist myself, but my failure aside, this series really pushed me in conveying ideas with simple yet effective drawings. And that's the crux of this whole success. Amazing yet simple art, effective storytelling, heart, cheekyness, flights of fantasy and even a bit of insanity.
Calvin and Hobbes is all about lost youth to me, and I always pictured the last Calvin and Hobbes showing Calvin walking past Hobbes, with Hobbes no longer a living tiger, but being just a stuffed toy. Calvin realising that this time of his life is over, bursting into tears, and running to his mother for comfort.
Instead he left us, looking for adventure in the woods behind his house with his best friend, destined to live forever in an endless summer.
When a cartoon gets to you on so many levels, does it seize being a cartoon? I'm not sure you can even use the word about something as monumental as this, but don't let that put you off. This is great literature, and you should own it simply to show people that you are a kid at heart, and that you know a great body of work when you see it.
Absolutely fantastic!, 05 Apr 2008
This item contains every single Calvin and Hobbes cartoon ever published.
The three volumes also contain some additional material written by Bill Watterson.
It's interesting to see how the style developed, especially in the first book where Watterson describes the origins of Calvin and Hobbes. The early cartoon strips are of a visibly different standard to those later on.
I love Calvin and Hobbes and this has kept me quiet for hours.

Stop him now , 19 Nov 2008
I went to school with him, and contrary to what he says in the Sunday Times, he was expelled for smoking dope at the prep school !
I am a fan , however; Top gear is great and his books are good fun to read but give me a break , they are all the same !
I live abroad , but when I come back to visit I like to go into the big bookshops and am invariably bombarded with the latest Jeremy Clarkson offering. This is getting annoying .
However funny he might be , there is only so much that can be written about cars, late seventies rock music and what there is still good about England.
Don't stop me now, 18 Oct 2008
Don't Stop Me NowWhat a fantastic read, you'd think this book would only appeal to the petrol heads. Don't be fooled. Very well written and it's super how Jeremy can twist his topic to fit the item under review.
Car reviews that are laugh out loud!, 13 Oct 2008
Firstly, this is more than a book about cars. It is Mr Clarkson's dry, witty and always cynical outlook on the world. If, like me, you find relief in discovering someone who is still politically incorrect, chauvanistic and doesn't care who knows it you will love the book. I found a lot of myself reflected in reading this
I have not enjoyed reading a book as much as this in a long time. The format of the reviews makes this an easy read to pick up and put down. Reviews are about 4 pages on average with great photography. The first 3 pages of a review are devoted to a humorous commentary on something seemingly unconnected with a car. This is always rectified in the last page with a surprisingly insightful description of the car itself. I believe all the reviews have previously been published in The Times.
Many car types are covered; supercars to the lowliest of runabouts....they're all here. Genuinely useful information can be found within the covers....not just the eye-watering performance figures of Veyrons and Diablos.
I would have no hesitation in recommending this book for both entertainment and basic information on the cars reviewed. Someone who was only a fan of humour would probably be best advised to steer clear (amusing pun intended) as this is a serious work of car journalism too.
At the time of writing (October 2008) Jeremy has been involved in a head on crash but early reports indicate that he is pretty much unscathed; "My right index finger looked like a burst sausage, my left shin was fatter than my thigh and my back felt like someone had driven over it with a pile-driver."
Good luck with the recovery, Jeremy, and lets hope another book as good as this appears soon.
Funny and funnier, 14 Aug 2008
Now we all know that Clarkson makes loads of money from selling books full of stuff he has already written in the paper but so what....who cares whether he's making extra money or not when you get to read this much funny stuff all in one book!
We all know he says he's writing about cars when in fact he just rants about complete rubbish for 3/4's of the articles....but who cares when he can make rubbish this funny!!!
We all know that Clarkson is a pompous, over opinionated, biggot....who cares....he's funnier than most other people you can read these days!!
I love this book....I think all the clarkson books are great but this one really is one of his best. I like the fact that they have made a bit more effort and actually put pictures of the cars he is talking about in the book. I probably like it more because it is more recent as well so the jokes are more topical.
If you want a bit of light reading, you know the kind of thing you can lie in bed and giggle to or sit in on a sunday morning and relax to then this is the book for you. Its light hearted, its funny, its easy to read and it offends 90% of the population which has to make you laugh doesn't to really!!
I'm not sure I will ever vote Clarkson for Prime Minister but I would certainly give him my vote when it comes to his writing. Dont think about the fact that he makes money out of this book having already been paid for writing the articles for the paper. It doesn't make any difference to you it just means you get to read all his funniest material in one go, which to be honest, is well worth the money!! In fact, with that kind of money making ability maybe he should be our Prime Minister!!!
"To everyone except John Prescott", 07 Jun 2008
Jezza's dedication, above, is a little unfair, in that he and the redoubtable Mr "two-jags" Prescott at least share a passion for cars. I like Clarkson's refreshinging un-PC attitude, although not his complancency about CO2 (although he may yet turn out to be right) and enjoy his columns on cars, and on more general matters, in The Sunday Times.
But is this a good book? Mr wife bought me it for Christmas, bouyed up no doubt by my positive reaction to "The World according to Clarkson" the year before, but I have read perhaps half of the fifty or so "chapters". Why?
Well, I can remember most of them from when I first read them, 2003 - 2006, for a start. At the same time, some of the contemporary references were so fleeting that they conjure forth no recollection at all. For example: in October 2003 "BBC bosses" decided to replace DJ Sara Cox with someone. Jezza suggested it was "The Queen". I have no recollection at all what that was about - have you?
In any case, Clarkson's humour about cars is perhaps a little intense when presented in such a format.
Whereas the content of a peperback is normally exactly the same as the hardback that preceeded it, be aware that the paperback does not include the excellent colour plates of all of the cars. As with the hardback, you don't get the number of "stars" Clarkson awarded to each car in that paper. How much would that have cost?
This is a book for the "lavatory reference section", from which to try to read one chapter before bed, or from dipping into on some other basis. Within those terms it succeeds.

Every animator or character artist should have a copy!, 16 Sep 2008
This is the one, the daddy, the absolute MUST-HAVE for anybody with an interest in animation, character design, or concept art. Richard Williams is a genius and he shares his observations on the difficult life of a trainee artist as well as giving the benefit of his huge amounts of talent and experience.
This book is full of easy to follow hints and tips covering character posing and animation of all sorts. There's no hiding from the fact that even if you use computers to create 3D animation you still need a solid grounding in the fundamentals of motion, weight and timing and this is what Williams helps to explain. Everything is accompanied with detailed illustrations and sketches to help you work through to basic character setups through to complex walk cycles.
I've seen a lot of art books in my time but this is the one that stands head and shoulders above the rest. Invaluable advice from a master of his art.
Fantastic even for the younger artists, 12 Jan 2008
I bought this book as Xmas present for my 11 year old (animation mad )son having read the reviews. In his own words "I havn't got through all of it but it is extremely helpful for my animation".
Apart from the digital blue camera we bought, this has been his most used and loved present. He finds the wording and pictures understandable, and the moving charactor pages fascinating. I have stumbled across a treasure that may well turn out to give him advancement for when he gets to high school (where they finally teach this stuff!)
Beyond price and yet totally affordable, 08 Feb 2007
Don't be fooled by the fact that this a paperback - this is an arm-wrenching book that more than justifies the effort needed to lift it. A humungously fantabulostic whizzbang of a book.
Other reviewers have pretty well said it all - but one comment I just have to repeat and add to is this -
If you're a newcomer to animation, this book is utterly essential.
If you're an experienced amateur or professional, this book has no other purpose than to enrich your life and extend your talents.
If you're just interested in animation, this book will have you reaching for a pencil in double-quick time.
The only book I've ever enountered that comes close to being this good is a slim (and now sadly out of print) little book by Bob Godfrey and originally published by the BBC. That was called 'The do-it-yourself film animation book' and this new book by Richard Williams is very much in that mould. This book is a 'how-to-do-it-yourself-book' of the highest order and covers just about every style, technique and idea you care to think about. More importantly, it will open your mind to the power and possibilities of traditional pencil-based animation.
After all, not everyone has the time, talent, inclination (or software) to learn computer animation, but almost everyone can use a pencil or brush (even amputees!) - and that is all you need. You don't even need to be a good artist to make animation work. Naturally, it does help - but it isn't essential, and this book will show you so many ideas and ways to go about making images move that you'll soon be itching to find your own solutions and ways forwards.
And THAT is the overpowering impression you get from this outstanding book - it makes you want to explore and to find out just what as-yet undiscovered worlds lie out there, a fraction of a millimetre beyond the tip of your pencil.
A Must Have, 27 Oct 2006
This is one of those books that every lecturer who teaches any kind of animation will tell you to buy, not suggest, TELL YOU TO BUY. A large section of the book explains animation history and some guide lines (like don't listen to music! lol) before breaking down different walk cycles and then moving on to other various things that can be animated. THIS BOOK IS A MUST HAVE FOR ANY LEVEL OF ANIMATOR (as even the legendary animators rules are altered in this book at some points).
Official Guide! , 17 Oct 2006
I remmber back in college where I had to take this book out and borrow it to study them at home. But then I managed to take it with me when i finished college lOl... That's because this book is sooooooo great, it covers the most importances of animation. It demonstrate the in between drawings, the movements of a character, describing the weight of an objects and how to exagerate your character. But by saying this, there is much more to this. Buy this book. This is the only book you need!

Brilliant Collection, 17 Nov 2008
Nostalgic, 07 Nov 2008
Bought it today, surprisingly alot bigger (not to mention heavier!) than i expected, but nevertheless, will be nostalgic going through every strip again having a laugh all the way! hope everyone else who decides to buys it will be enjoying it as much as i do!
The other reviews here pretty much say it all... if you are a fan of Calvin and Hobbes, you are going to love this! And, if you are already a fan, you will undoubtedly own a few worn-out copies of the various collections. I already have most, if not all of the books;
what makes this special and worth having (..in addition!) is the beautiful presentation, in chronological order, of all the strips, with the large cover art added throughout.
I love Calvin and Hobbes and this has kept me quiet for hours.

nice alarm clock, 28 Nov 2008
2 alarms, quick set mode on alarms, 3 dim settings for green led light, is good. the only down side is you'd have to learn which button to press to get the radio on, there is 4 or 5 buttons the same size just. happy enough i got this clock tho
Perfect., 08 Sep 2008
Just what i was looking for.
Dual alarms, so you dont have to hit the snooze button 5 times before you get out of bed. Both alarms can be set differently [radio comes on at 645, if your still not up, buzzer can go off at 0700] and both are extremely easy to set.
great radio receiver and decent quality sound. glad i bought the right one after searching through amazons selection.
DISPLAY CANNOT BE SEEN IN BRIGHT DAYLIGHT, 06 May 2008
Not a bad clock radio, huge drawback is you cannot see the display during the daytime, both Sony models suffer from this, sending mine back today!!!
Clock radio, 28 Feb 2008
A good clock radio. Dual alarm is handy if you over sleep like i do or if two peolpe need to get up at different times. Large clear display, although quite bright even on the dim setting. I like the automatic time set and reset if there is a power cut, we have several where we live and I work shifts, so not a good combination.
On the whole very pleased with it.

The other reviews here pretty much say it all... if you are a fan of Calvin and Hobbes, you are going to love this! And, if you are already a fan, you will undoubtedly own a few worn-out copies of the various collections. I already have most, if not all of the books;
what makes this special and worth having (..in addition!) is the beautiful presentation, in chronological order, of all the strips, with the large cover art added throughout.
This is the only book you need!
nice alarm clock, 28 Nov 2008
How do I love Peanuts? Let me count the ways..., 24 Jan 2008
I used to rely on the back pages of newspapers for my Peanuts fix; now I can binge with a heavy hardback. Good grief! This has an introduction by an unlikely but super-enthused Peanuts fan, Walter Cronkite (a famous CBS news anchor, for any Europeans who don't recognise the name), and includes all of the strips from the cartoon's 3rd and 4th years of existence. It's fascinating how different the characters looked back then. I look forward to following my hero, Lucy, 'the nation's foremost authority on jumping ropes', through the next few volumes. May there be many.

Brilliant Collection, 17 Nov 2008
