Timeless wisdom, 08 Feb 2008
They say good things come in small packages and this is certainly an example. It is a slim book with short statements of spiritual guidance and exhortation that speak to the human condition while often challenging our assumptions about our nature. People of any religion can read this (taking it in in small amounts) and benefit from it. The attractive presentation, while not necessary, adds to the reader's positive feeling. This is a good book to buy for oneself but also as a gift to others.
A Book to meditate with, 30 Jan 2004
I was given a copy of this book many years ago and have found it an invaluable source of inspiration when practicing meditation. It gives the meditator clear focus and direction to their thoughts. A book that should be a 'must' for anyone who practices meditation, Baha'i or of any faith [I got it as a Buddhist].

The Hidden Words of Baha'u'llah is an ethical handbook of sublime beauty, containing 'that which hath descended from the realm of glory, uttered by the tongue of power and might, and revealed unto the Prophets of old.' The immaculate verses of the Hidden Words can likened a loving parent, helping and protecting the reader, giving strength, and offering the open hand of guidance and perfect wisdom. A book that is both concise and complete.

Excellent new introduction to Baha'i Faith, 29 Jan 2008
This is an excellent new introduction to the Baha'i Faith, made better by its fresh approach. It starts with today - with what Baha'is actually do, and how their faith affects their lives, dealing in sequence with the individual, the family, the community and the wider world. Only later do we get the history and the detail of the teachings that was not naturally brought into the earlier sections. The result is a welcome immediacy and sense of involvement, a feeling for what their religion means to Baha'is and how they live it. Highly recommended.

A survivor's account of religious persecution, 15 Feb 2007
This book is a survivor's shocking account of the persecution of the 350 000 strong Bahai faith in Iran.
Since the 1979 Islamic revolution, which saw the destruction of Bahai's holiest site in Iran, the House of Bab in Shiraz, there has been violent and sytematic persecution of the Bahais by Iran's radical revolutionary regime.
The Bahais are being persecuted soley for reasons of religious prejudices.
Thousands of Bahai holy sites, community centres, homes and businesses have been destoyed by Iran's revolutionary guards and over 200 Bahais have been murdered and executed.
Olya Roohizadegan was imprisoned for her faith, and subjected to intense physical and mental torture, to try to force her to renounce her religion.
She remained loyal to her faith and survived. In prison, she formed friendships with ten women and girls who had been arrested for teaching Bahai faith clases to children. They were all executed. Olya and her family were released and escaped to the USA were she countinues to try to alert the world of the plight of Iran's Bahais. But is anybody listening?
The persecution of the Bahais continues in Iran, and few in the world have taken up their cause or protested the abuses by Iran's Islamo-Nazi regime.

New Era, 21 Nov 2003
This book is a wonderfully comprehensive intro to the new Era of Baha'u'llah, His teachings are expounded in a lucid and structured manner that I found both informative and readable. It is interesting to note that Abdu'l-Baha collaborated with the author in the completion of this work, providing authoritative suggetions as well as editing a number of chapters before His passing. I highly recommend this book for those interested in learning more about the Baha'i Faith.

Ethel Jenner Rosenberg was a painter and miniaturist who in 1899 became the first native of England to become a member of the Baha'i Faith in that country. She had learned about it from Mary Virginia Thornburgh-Cropper, who was the first person in Britain to convert to this religion. Despite her resoundingly English-sounding name Thornburgh-Cropper was actually American, but had made her home in London.
Ethel Rosenberg (a descendant, incidentally, of Dr Edward Jenner, the pioneer of smallpox vaccination) went on to become a stalwart member of the growing British Baha'i community for the rest of her life, ensuring her place in history.
The book puts her life and experiences in context and is in effect a history of that new and growing community from the end of the Nineteenth Century through the first third or so of the Twentieth, and deals with a number of other significant figures as well
Baha'i Pioneer Worker 1858-1930, 29 Oct 2002
This is an interesting biography of Ethel Jenner Rosenberg, the first Englishwoman to becoman a Baha'i. Born in Bath into a distinguished family of painters in late Victorian England, she had a privileged childhood and became an accomplished miniaturist painter. In 1899 at the age of 40 Miss Rosenberg heard about the Baha'i Faith. This resulted in Ethel becoming the first Englishwoman to become a Baha'i and her life changed direction. The author relates how she then made her first visit to the Holy Land in order to gain a better understanding of the Baha'i teachings. The book goes on to describe how she became a pioneer worker amongst the English Baha'is in the early days of the twentieth century, and how she forged friendships with many of the earliest Baha'is on the European continent, thus becoming in those early decades part of an internationally emerging Baha'i community. She was also to journey to the United States where she met some of the very early American Baha'is. 'Abdu'l-Baha, the son of the Founder of the Baha'i Faith, made his historic visit to the West in 1911. Ethel Rosenberg was one of the band of his faithful followers. His visit made a profound impression on her and subsequently she was also able to assist in the development of the embryonic stages of the Faith in the British Isles in the days preceding the First World War. After the death of 'Abdu'l-Baha in 1921, Ethel Rosenberg once again travelled to the Holy Land. She was amongst the group of prominent Western Baha'is with whom the newly appointed Guardian of the Baha'i Faith consulted in 1922 regarding the Faith's future. She returned to England ready to devote the last eight years of her life to the building up of the Baha'i administrative order. In 1923 the election took place of the first National Spiritual Assembly of the Baha'is of the British Isles and Ethel Rosenberg was elected to it. She passed away in November 1930. The book makes for interesting and pleasant reading and throughout it the author gives many interesting pen portraits of some of the other stalwart early Baha'is of the day.
The start of the Baha'i faith in Britain, 21 May 2002
This is a workmanlike account of the life of the first British-born woman to become a Baha'i in the British Isles and of the small Baha'i community which grew up around her, will be of interest mainly to those who have already become Baha'is or those who are investigating the Baha'i religion as part of a course of study. To them it will almost certainly provide all the material and further references they are likely to want in finding out how a handful of believers, short of material resources, became the foundation of the much larger, vigorous British Baha'i community of today. A few of the book's related incidents provide interesting footnotes to wider British historical events of the period.
