Songbird or bad Karaoke, 13 Nov 2008
Having enjoyed several of Josephine Cox's novels in the past, I was looking forward to a good read with Songbird. I was sadly disappointed though as I found that there seemed to be some sort of contest to see how many cliches could be fitted into each and every sentence. I found this very annoying, so much so that I was unable to finish the book, something I have not done since I was a child.
Fantastic novel, 19 Oct 2008
Fantastic novel by Josephine Cox. I could not put it down, the plot was very good and I liked the opening where the students were in their house and they heard the most beautiful voice coming from next door. From then on I liked the different settings for the book - Bedford, then Blackpool and back to Bedford again.
Jo Cox is very good at descriptions such as the high speed chase on the roads with Maddy in the car. There were surprising twists and turns and I really liked the book.
Congratulations to the publishers for a very fine book cover.
All in all a very good book and well done Jo.

Only for fans of the Santangelos, 25 Aug 2008
I have been reading Jackie's books for fifteen years, and the Santangelo books have always been my favourites. However, this one annoyed me because Jackie seems to have forgotten what she wrote in the previous instalments, e.g. Maria's colouring has changed from fair to dark, and Carioca has changed mothers and not aged at all! The plot was very thin and re-hashed from other novels, but at least this time Lucky doesn't have to rescue Brigette from yet another nasty man. . .
Brilliant as ever!, 08 Aug 2008
I love all of Jackie Collins books and this was no different. Very enjoyable and very easy to read. I read at the gym whilst sitting on the bike and forgot what hard work I was doing whilst reading!!! :-) Thanks Jackie.
Definitely recommend. Can't wait for the next one.

I havent read a Jackie Collins novel in a few years! Glad to see nothing has changed! I love her, she is such an easy read, pick it up read a few hours and your finished! I loved it! The Santagelo family lives on, and bringing other members of the family more to the fore! A must read for all!
same ole, same ole, 26 Jun 2008
After reading all of the Santangelo novels was thrilled to find this at Luton airport before boarding. Easy to read, put down and pick up whenever but is a bit 'same as before'. Kidnapping (again) plot from old enemies (again, but who quietly disappear) and a plot to blow up Luckys new hotel (quietly disappears and never heard of again). Disappointing but as I say easy to pick up mid chapter and pick up where you left off. Wishing Gino was still a young man !!!!!

A good quick read, 19 Oct 2008
A good quick read and another good offering by Jo Cox. The two main characters called Mark and Pete were very jovial and I could just imagine Pete's face when he saw the girl of his dreams on the platform.
Liked the description about the commuters at Euston Station and all in all a good story.
Would like to see in the future another novel by Jo featuring the characters Pete Mark Mark and Leila, I think there could be a lot more scope for these characters.
I enjoyed the book.
What Nonsense, 05 Jul 2008
I completely concur with the previous reviewer. This book is puzzling in its awfulness. The dialogue is cringe making and the timescale just doesn't work. The characters manage to get from Bedford to London, book into a bed and breakfast, go the theatre, visit a seedy club and get back to their accommodation in under five hours. The characters are quite unbelievable and the style of writing absurd. What was Josephine Cox doing - having a laugh?
Don't bother with this one, 27 Mar 2008
I have never seen such poor writing and am amazed that stuff like this gets published. The story is so incredibly cliched and so are the characters. This 'quick read' has no redeeming features whatsoever and I wonder if the author is ironically giving us a classic example of how not to write!

Really Really Good, 11 Apr 2008
This book is the second part to The Journey. It really was a good ending, and having known the characters from the first book, there were tears in my eyes at the end of this book.
The characters all feel alive, and I felt as if I really knew all these people!!!
An excellent book, 03 Apr 2007
I found the book a real page turner. It has made me want to read her previous books to find out what happened with Barney and Lucy and how he died. The characters were more beliveable than some books, and reacted in a more predictable way. It was a good all round book which was suitable for all ages. Highly recommended
Following on from THE JOURNEY by Josephine Cox, 21 Mar 2007
Following on from THE JOURNEY by Josephine Cox, the sequel JOURNEY'S END was a fabulous piece of writing. Once again the characters played a magnificent part in the novel and as I read the book there were some incidents in the book that I didn't see coming but as I say that is Jo's tremendous gift she has as a first class writer. I thought the confession from Lucy at the beginning of the book that was entitled THE TELLING was a moving piece of writing. It was sad about Barney Davidson but I thought the character Leonard Maitland was excellent, I could imagine Boston USA when I was reading and Leonard's office as there is a lot of business opportunities in Boston I would imagine.
I thought Jo's description of the evil Edward Trent was superb and I'm glad he got his comeuppance, I knew that he would get caught for his dastardly deeds.
I think readers will enjoy this sequel to THE JOURNEY and all the best to Jo I really enjoy reading your book.
the second book fto The Journey, 28 Oct 2006
this is the follow on to the journey. Now after reading the Journey i sat and waited and waited for this book i hated the wait i went in to smiths to find out when it was being published and to find out i had to waite another 4 months i was sure it was going to kill me.
In the Journey you follow an old woman telling her story to her daugther and a gentleman. The second book which is this one Journeys end is when the Old woman finally deals with her past and lays ghosts to rest. its a beautiful sotry and a remarkable book. its speel binding and of course its a must to read the journey first and then this but i promise you it will be well worth it.
Nice story, 12 Oct 2006
This book follows the fortunes of the characters from Cox's earlier novel 'The Journey'. I found this a very easy and pleasant read. Cox is an excellent storyteller with pleasant and loveable characters. Would recommend this to anyone who enjoys a good old fashioned nice story!

Gripping, Sexy, FANTASTIC READ!, 12 Aug 2006
I bought this on a spur of the moment thing. fancied a summer read and this Book caught my eye. It took awhile for the story to start, lots of charecters to introduce and storylines set out, but it begins to get really good right in the middle of the book, after that, its very difficult to put down. The charecters, all different and Vibrant in Many ways. I love the scandal, the secrets, the lies, the deception, the love, the Hate. ITS ALL GOOD! i definatly recomend this book. I am now a fan of jackie Collins, after reading this book, how could you not be.
I am actually quite sad i finished the book, Would love to see a sequel *hint, hint*

She's Back, 24 Jan 2007
The Queen of Hollywood has returned with this stonker of a bonkbuster. Amy Scott-Simon, a New York heiress is engaged to Max Diamond, a powerful real estate tycoon. At her hen party, she runs into Jett, who turns out to be Max's younger half brother who is fresh back from Italy and exile. Chris Diamond - an entertainment lawyer flies into town to meet up with his two brothers, and their dad - Red - a bonkers billionaire. Working as Red's housekeeper is Diahann, whos stunning daughter Liberty is busy pursuing her dream to be a singer, whilst Damon P Donnell, hip hop mogul supreme - persues her.... And then there's Mariska, Max Diamonds Russian socialite ex-wife, a women with more secrets than anyone, secrets that lead to her brutal and mysterious murder - Superb!!!
Not what I was expecting, 06 Jun 2008
I finally managed to pick up and read one of Jackie Collins' books. After reading many chick-lit novels and being constantly reminded that Jackie is one of the best authors, I decided to given in and read this book.
I didn't expect this book to be as over the top and as far fetched as it was. It was, for me, far to unrealistic, to the point where I was going to stop reading it. However, the more I read, the more I wanted to know how it would end. Reading about each of these women can get a little confusing at time, especially at first when you're trying to remembe,r which woman is the actress and so on and so on. I felt abit dissapointed that I never got to make a connection with any of the charatcers, to be honest they were all a little bland and see through.
I was abit annoyed at the ending, it was, as another reviewer has called it, an abrubt ending. It felt kind of rushed, as if she just wanted to get the ending over and done with. However, the book as a whole was okay. The way Jackie writes is brilliant, it's just a shame I didn't think this book was any good.
Brilliant!, 12 Apr 2007
I really loved this book. It took only a couple of evenings to read, I was so hooked! I have read a few of JCs other books and I think this is one of the best so far. I love the way Jackie Collins gives you a bit of each character then going on to the next one, making you read on in earnest trying to find out what happened to so and so the whole way through.
This book is quite fast paced and really easy to get into. Definately recomend!
Entertaining Read?, 18 Aug 2003
Having read many Collins books i felt a little let down by this one. I found the book very abrupt in its ending and a little to far fetched even for Ms. Collins, but if you're looking for Glamour, Sex and fast living its all here. Worth taking the chance on this one just to decide for yourself.
JACKIE COLLINS AT HER BEST, 26 Jun 2002
If you like Jackie collins you will love this book. It has everything sex, glamour, suspense, scandal and a hero who you have already met(and whos description makes you wish you could meet him in real life). The book had me hooked from the beginning and yes i agree with some of the other reviews that you do guess the end but thats typical Jackie collins. If you havn`t read Jackie collins books i recommend this all though you may want to start with some of her earlier books as this book brings up previous characters. Jackie collins at her best and i can`t wait to read her new one.
Have I read this before???, 03 Mar 2002
I bought this novel as I have been a fan of Jackie Collins for years and have read and re-read every one of her books. However, if you picked any one of her last three books you would get the same story but with different character names. The last chapter of these books summarises everything that has happened and concludes each scenario. This makes you feel that the previous chapters could have been missed out and you would still know what has gone on. Why this style of writing has appeared I don't know but it has not gone down well with me. Where has the Collins magic gone? Boring, bland and feels like you have read it before!!!

I have been reading Jackie's books for fifteen years, and the Santangelo books have always been my favourites. rave about this novel, 15 Oct 2008
Absolutely loved everything about this book from the first meeting of the hero/heroine, their interaction, developing freindship to the final outcome. Its not the typical male must protect the sensibilities of female, true grit instead with genuine "gut-like" feelings. Jess is not a weak typical stereo-type & Dain's feelings are so taken from the beginning that the whole leaves you with a "whoosy" good feeling & you want to buy the rest of the books that LC has written I reccommend this book to all romantics, & yet another keeper.
Smart and sexy, 15 Mar 2008
Jessicas numb skulled brother has gotten mixed up with a real the bad news Marquess of Dain, rich but impossibly evil this womanizing scoundrel is suprised to find himself attracted to the prim and proper Jessica Trent. She thinks to out manouver him in an attempt to free her brother from his clutches but finds their mutual attraction taking them both by surprise.
Smart and sexy this little historical romance novel is a pleasant surprise - so often I feel writers are insulting my intelligence while, half asleep they tap out same ol, same old and then skip happily to the bank. Then along comes someone like Ms Trent, really trying to write and doing a mighty fine job at it to boot.
The dialogue trips along and even manages to sparkle a litte, we get some understanding why our hero is the way he is and the chemestry between the two main characters is quite nice too.
Not breathtaking but all in all a really nice read.
FAB......, 10 Dec 2007
What an excellent book. 2 very interesting and real main characters. You will not be able to put the book down. It gets better and better as the story unfolds. A must read!
fantastic nook. a must read!!!, 10 Aug 2007
After reading the other reviews i thought i'd give this book a go. What a fatastic read! The characters were well thought out, the plot hilarious. I especially loved it when she shot him! It was geat to read a book where the woman knows her own mind and seeks to understand her man. She doesn't fall apart when he is moody orhorrible but looks to find out why. He is also a brilliant character - moody and broody as we like them, but with depth.
The interaction between the main characters is well written and very engaging. it made you laugh, blush and your heart clench.
I couldn't put this book down. I am so going to look for more books by this author.
please read this book - you will not be disappointed!
Dreadful cover, great book!, 26 Dec 2006
[Please note - this review was for the original paperback issue of the book. This book has now been reissued with a much better cover!]
Is it just me, or are most Regency mass-market paperback covers just AWFUL? They usually have a scantily-clad and dishy man in a semi-compromising position with a beautiful woman whose dress seems to be falling down. And such was the cover of this book - I wouldn't have bought it if it weren't for the great reviews on Amazon.co.uk. And I am glad I looked beyond the dismal cover as it was a very good book!
Firstly, that cover. Presumably the man on the front (a shiny chestnut-haired, muscular Adonis with slightly tanned skin and a traditionally handsome face) is meant to be Sebastian Ballister, Marquess of Dain and the hero of this story. However, we are told right at the beginning of the story that Dain is actually ugly; well, if not ugly, certainly not your traditional handsome hero. He's got a huge nose, he's half-Italian and therefore very swarthy and he has black curly hair. Oh, and he's enormously tall and very well muscled. Doesn't sound like our rather average-sized hero on the front cover of this book.
Jessica Trent, our heroine, is tall-ish, stunningly beautiful (of course) with long black hair which is usually pinned up in rather bad hairstyles. Now the woman in this picture is probably an amazon as she looks about the same height as the bloke and we have already established that Dain is well over six feet tall. Hmmm. Apart from that she answers reasonably to the description of our heroine.
Yes, it's a waste of time moaning about the cover art but you wonder if the people commissioning the cover of this book actually read it; or, more likely, if they thought rendering an accurate illustration of Dain would frighten people off. And that's what our hero spends his life dealing with - people find him ugly, scary, frightening. They try to beat him up, reject him (his mother runs away when he's eight years old and his father sends him off to school and basically ignores him) and he spends his twenties carousing and womanising like your average Regency Rake. And he has the money for it - he's loaded - so he believes that he can get whatever he wants by paying for it.
Unfortunately for Jessica Trent, her brother Bertie, who is a few sandwiches short of a picnic in the brains department, has fallen in with Dain's crowd and hasn't got the finances for it. Jessica and Bertie were hard-up to start with, being orphans, and Bertie can't afford the wine, women and song that those who run in Dain's set seem to spend their whole time chasing. Thus Jessica, with the help of her grandmother Genevieve, decides to try to separate Bertie from Dain. This involves Jessica actually meeting Dain and at that point it all starts going awry as she falls in lust with the ugly, enormous and very intelligent and witty man. She is also intelligent and witty and so, despite being a lady, which is a species Dain avoids like the plague, he finds himself in conversation with her. Their conversations don't go well as both are so clever that they end up in a kind of contest which both want to win - Jess's prize is that Dain will exlude her brother from his set; Dain's prize is that he will have a beautiful Russian Icon that Jess found in a shop in Paris. And so their initial introductions take place and they both find that there is something very special in the other - and this doesn't escape the attention of the rest of society which causes some problems for them both in terms of reputation.
This is a romance that explores the deeper issues that people have that may cause them to behave in a particular way and a lot of the story is about how Jess slowly draws Dain out of his shell so that she can understand why he behaves the way he does with women. She also causes him to face up to his responsibilities back at home in England and is amazingly accepting of him with his past history. It's a well-written love story with a small side-plot of someone trying to damage Dain and it never gets boring as they move from Paris to Dartmoor. Jess is a really fun heroine (she actually shoots Dain at one point) and he's an interesting hero with far more to him than the usual Regency hero (which is usually just good looks - which of course he doesn't have at all). I felt perhaps that the resolution of their problems unfolded rather rapidly at the end, plus I wondered how she managed to behave like a perfectly angelic wife for a whole month just to make a point (surely this would be impossible for just a day with such a difficult man) but I did find, after finishing the book, that I believed they COULD make a go of it, that their mutual love was understandable despite the differences in their natures, and I was glad that he was a reformed rake and came to terms with himself and his responsibilities, although perhaps rather more quickly than would happen in real life (the work of several years compressed into a month). This was a very good book, though, and I'm going to look out for more by Loretta Chase. I just hope they have less toe-curlingly embarrassing covers.

Boring, bland and feels like you have read it before!!!
rave about this novel, 15 Oct 2008
12 times and STILL counting!, 27 Sep 2008
I first bought this book 19 years ago, I read it then and am re-reading it again now, for the 12th time!!!
I find this book enchanting and very typical of a grooms life style, if not a show jumpers life style also. I can not fault the attention to detail, and story line.
I laugh out loud, cry without remorse and throughly enjoy every page..
I have also read Polo, and, Man Who Made Husbands Jealous.
If you enjoy Riders, you are sure to enjoy the Polo and Man Who Made Hubands Jealous... Riders is just a fab book after you get past chapter 2,although Riders can be hard to get into, it is well worth the effort...
ENJOY..! (p.s I on amazon looking for my 4th copy of Riders as I have worn the other copies out!!!)
Worth reading if you like showjumping!, 19 Jun 2008
After getting interested in all things horse related - i decided to give this book a go. I have never read any Jilly Cooper before so expected the book to have no real story and just lots of descriptive sex scenes!. So i was pleasently surprised to find it did have a story, and a belting one at that!, and the sex scenes were short and few and far between. The story cleverly spans several years and allows readers to follow characters as they grow up and mature. I was delighted that there are lots of horses in it and some feature as main characters nearly!. The showjumping descriptions are so fast paced and well written that you would think you were watching them on TV!. All in all i thought the story was great, i really enjoyed it and i fully intend to read my way through the other books in the 'series'. Considering most of the other books are not horsey (apart from Polo) goes to show that Jilly has won me over with her writing style and compelling characters.
Not bad..., 17 Mar 2008
I read this book because of its brilliant reputation. I have read Fiona Walker's French Relations which is meant to be very similar. Although a good read I actually preferred French Relations. Despite this, it is well worth a read, especially if you like horses!
Utterly tremendous!, 25 Feb 2008
A truly excellent book! Some of the characters were tough to like - I had previously adored Rupert Campbell-Black in other books so I was horrified by his portrayal in this original appearance and wished he could have got a better come-uppance for beating his horses and his sadistic treatment of his wife yet I think it actually helped to know that he would improve in later life! I've read this book over and over and every time I still enjoy it!
Fantastic read !, 13 Oct 2007
This is the first time I have read anything by Jilly Cooper and I certainly want to read more. I can't wait! As with all the other reviewers, I completely fell in love with all the main male characters and absolutely laughed out loud in many places at their antics. I loved the book. I felt the pain each time when things were not going so well and I sobbed when Jake lost his faithful Sailor... Absolutely superb read.
