Not her best but still an ok read..., 17 Aug 1999
Sexy, daring, yes this book has lots of that! Miranda wasn't very likable but the hero, Jared was. She has lots of adventures and lots of sex with other men in order to save the hero (what a good sport she is!) and they live happily ever after. The end. Sounds trite? For a 400+ page book it sure is! The history drags here and there and the 'love at first sight' bit is overblown. The love/lust scenes are sizzling which redeems this otherwise forgettable book.
My first and favorite!!, 18 Jul 1999
This was the very first book I picked up by Ms. Small. I have been hooked ever since. Miranda is intelligent and strong and very devoted to her husband. She risks all to find him and nearly loses herself in the process, but comes out stronger than ever.
How low can you go?, 21 May 1999
The popularity of Smith's books give lie to the claim that woman no longer find physical and mental abuse a turn on. In this book she reaches an all time low. It contains a very graphically described sex scene in which a woman has a climax while she is being murdered. Who need's woman haters when you have Small?
This book gave thrills in every word I read., 14 Mar 1999
When I first read this book I got thrill and I anticipate what happened next.
An outstanding story of Love and determination!, 24 Jun 1998
Miranda is truly a determined and passionate woman who will do anyhting to be with her husband and child. I found this book hard to put down because I just needed to know what was going to happen next.

Fantastic and very enticing...Beatrice Small does it again., 26 Jul 1999
As a fan of Beatrice Small's books, I came across this book when I was shopping. Just after reading the description on the back cover, I was so intrigued I knew I had to buy this book. The main character Zenobia is very strong like Cailin in "Love Remember, Me". She was lucky to fall in love with two men. I especially enjoyed reading how she became reunited with Marcus after being enslaved by the wicked Aurelian. It seems to me that both Zenobia and Marcus are two soulmates fated to be together. Just reading page after page, you just can't put the book down. This one is defenitley magnificent!
A masterpiece of romantic fiction, 22 Jun 1999
"Beloved" simply IS the top of its genre. Bertrice Small's typewriter (which she was still using then, I believe) was sprinkled with fairy dust when she wrote this fictionalization of Zenobia's life. Unfortunately, she wasn't able to keep up this pace, and her last truly great book was "Wild Jasmine."
You can't put it down once you have started reading it., 20 Jun 1999
Bertice Small portrays the strength that only a woman can have through her charater, Zenobia. Zenobia goes from the daughter of a wealthy nomad to a powerful and respected Queen. She defeats those who said she couldn't and showed strength beyond belief. From her defeat of the Roman empire, to her defeat of her fear of the Roman race itself, she shows courage and insight. She gives woman of today the optimism to continue on through hardship. Zenobia also teaches how to lose the ones you love and still manage to overcome grief. The lose of her mother, through the visciousness of Roman guards, the lose of her husband the King, brought on by jealousy, and the lose of her father to old age. All of these things show woman how to overcome heartache. Through her adventures and courage this book is brought to life. Bertice Small did an amazing job with her book,Beloved.
absolutely enchanting, 28 Apr 1999
A wonderful book about a woman who did existed. Although the whole book was of BSmall's imagination, isn't that what a fictional novel is? I loved the imagery. Zenobia's growing up years as both her father's daughter and as Odenthaus (sp?) just added to a magnificiant storyline! Once, again, this author has captured my attention and brought me back for more.

A Great Fantasy escape, 02 Nov 2004
I've been a reader of Bertrice Small for years. The Kadin is what hooked me. Most of her books are great reading. I love the lust, the intrigue, the romance. What a great escape from the every day doldrums. The Love Slave is on par with The Kadin, and I highly reccomend it to anyone who wants that dreamy fantasy read!
Good read, 24 Jun 1999
I read this book while my boyfriend was out of town, and I must say it wasn't bad company. I first read 'The Kadin' as an impressionable young girl, and this book cemented my harem fantasy for life. 'The Love Slave' offers more of the same, albeit an even more implausible plot. But hey, I don't read these books for a dose of reality. (: The ending was fairly laughable, with the demise of the rogue Ali Hassan. I was unsure as to wht there was no resolution regarding the fate of Regan/Zaynab's sister back in Scotland -- I kept expecting her or one of her brethren to pop up in Cordoba, but was disappointed. Highly entertaining title, will keep you warm at night.
Sleazy...skanky...slutty sex!, 03 Jun 1999
I needed a shower after reading this potpourri of porno, pillage and pretense! Ok, alliteration aside, this books is a poor excuse for a romance. There is no romance--just sex ad nauseum. I am no prude, but I like a plot here and there in my novels. And, lest we forget, a little romance would be nice too. This should be reclassified as historical erotica because the love scenes were devoid of love, the characters were hard to relate to and in some cases downright unlikable, and the ending was trite. I miss the books Small used to write...I guess all good things must come to an end!
Definitely erotica at its fullest....., 15 Feb 1999
Choosing a rating for this book is very difficult because I don't want to scare anyone away with only 3 stars, BUT BE WARNED, this story is NOT for everyone. Beatrice Small has always been extremely graphic in her stories, and if you don't like highly detailed erotic scenes, stay away from this story. Thus saying, the attention to detail, sights, smells, feelings, and tastes, that Ms. Small is known for in her earlier stories, are all here in The Love Slave. Regan is a no-nonsense woman who takes what could be an extremely bleak future, and molds it into something, if not desireable for everyone, then atleast sucessful. I found it much more realistic to see how her character progresses, even having to take the lovers she must in order to be more than just someone's whore in the white gold trade. Some might see her as prostituting herself (and thus be turned off), but Ms. Small tries very hard to disuade us of thinking of Regan in that light. It is the more practical I-will-do-whatever-I-have-to-to-survive light that is striving to surface here. Regan and Karim are both interesting characters to get to know, and to empathise with, as the story unfolds. By the end of the story, the plot seems to turn a little too pat with first the one, and then the other needing each other to pull them out of a depression, but we can work around that. In a time when you can't simply buck the system or win all the time, this story might pull at our democratic ideals of the freedom to chose to live our lives as we see fit, but it makes it all that more realistic in my eyes. I enjoyed this story, but as I warned above, stay clear if you don't like VERY graphic sex.
One of my all time faves!!!, 05 Jan 1999
This book is to die for!!! I loved it! could not put it down, read it in a day. I had purchased it about 6 months ago and it had been sitting on my book shelf until I had this all of a sudden overwhelming urge to read a bertrice. Let me tell you what....this is one hot, exciting book. I was so engrossed in it that I did not want it to end. I almost turned right back to the first page after finishing it. Even though totally different, Zaynab has become one of my favorite heroines. I bawled while reading this book and will never forget how I loved it and how I felt while reading it.

This book compells you from the mintue you pick it up. "Adora" is a hero for the ages. The love that she an Murad endure and enjoy is timeless and very profetic. I hope that you enjoy it as much as I did.
Great as nine years ago..., 25 Nov 1998
I read Adora nine years ago in another country. OF course it was in another language. After I moved to America, I couln't stop thinking about this book. All those years, it still gave me the great feelings...I had to have this book in English version. It took me 10 weeks to have this book because this book had different title when they were published in my country. Now, I have the book that I wanted for a long time. I can't tell you how much I wanted this book. Now, I can read it whenever I want. I hope you can see the great affection that i saw nine years ago...
Bus' out da Kleenex!, 10 Nov 1998
I was captivated by this story. Bertrice, you made me happy, angry, sad, and anxious to skip pages so I could satisfy my impatience. A wonderfully written story set in the places that Bertrice loves to take us to.
HOT! HOT! HOT! HISTORICAL ROMANCE NOVEL....MY FIRST!!, 10 Jul 1998
THIS IS THE BEST I'VE READ FROM BEATRICE SMALL. I'VE READ ALL OF THEM!!
A good and educational read!, 18 Dec 1997
This book kept me enthralled from beginning to end. It also taught me a few new things about sex! I love the historical accuracy and Bertrice Small captures the feel of a time period beautifully.

Please tell me Bertrice Small was not the author of this dreck! She is usually quite a page turner--this latest offering of hers is quite a churner! It was nauseatingly predictable and overblown. Skye's Legacy seemed like a great idea for a new series (no one knows how to beat a dead horse better than Small) but if it means more books like this one...I'll pass! Guess I'll just re-read the old Skye novels onstead!
A good read, 19 May 1999
In the early seventeenth century, teenager India Lindley elopes with Adrian Leigh, Viscount Twyford, a noble her father scorns. However, before the duo can marry in Italy, Barbery pirates from the state of El Sinut capture their ship. New York Times best selling author Bertrice Small continues the romantic adventures of the Skye O'Malley descendants with the well-written tale of India, the first of a new trilogy. The story line is trademark Ms. Small with an enjoyable historical erotica romance that includes female sex slavery in an exotic locale. Fans of the author and anyone who has never tasted one of her novels, will gain immense pleasure from BEDAZZLED. However, there is nothing new to the story line that Ms. Small has not previously said in her previous O'Malley novels, a fact that will leave some readers bored with the tale. Harriet Klausner

At last ! A well researched historical romance., 23 Feb 2003
This book tells the story of the illegitimate daughter of the Prince of the Welsh, Rhonwyn uerch Gruffydd. Raised in a Fortress by rough fighting men, Rhonwyn knows little of womanly ways until she is bartered into marriage in a peace deal between her father and the English king. Sent for six months to a nunnery to learn to be a propper wife, Bronwyn does her best to be a good wife to her husband Edward de Beaulieu, despite the marital rape that occurs on their wedding night. Unable to feel passion, she yet feels the slow growth of affection that she hopes will turn to love. She leaps at the chance to go on Crusade with Edward, nursing him devotedly through illness, yet disaster strikes when she is kidnapped and brought as a slave to the Caliph of Cinnebar, whose brother she killed in battle. Enamoured of his fair slave, he soon makes her his second wife and unlocks the secret, a childhood witnessing of her mother's rape, that had kept her frigid and afraid of sexual pleasure. Despite the fierce passion the Caliph unlocks in her, Rhonwyn cannot forget Edward and with her brother's aid, manages to escape. Upon her return to England, however, she is dismayed to find her husband had remarried before she was cold in the grave he thought she had occupied, and his new wife is heavily pregnant. Enraged at his faithlessness, Rhonwyn seeks justice from the king, but is horrified to find that along with the return of her dowry, the king will provide her with a new husband whether she wishes it or not. Edward's cousin Rafe de Beaulieu is attracted by her beauty as much as her dowry, and makes no secret of his desire for her. However, he is wise enough to give her time to accept the changes in her life, as well as the passion that flares white-hot between them. As their friendship grows, so too does love, for Rafe is able to love her for what she is, a passionate, spirited and intelligent woman , and give her space to be herself. I really enjoyed this book for several reasons. Firstly, it is based on the wonderful epic tale of the life of an amazing woman, who manages to remain true to herself in a man's world. Secondly it is a charming love story, and in Rafe, Rhonwyn finds a man she can love, who loves her, and is also a fantastic lover. Thirdly, the history is well researched, and credible - I am so tired of reading books by lazy authors who skimp on basic research such as the use of tittles and blatant disregard for the social customs of the day. This story works with, rather than against, them. A cracking good read!

This was the first book I read by Betrice Small---1981, 06 Jul 1999
I love the historical accuracy and Bertrice Small captures the feel of a time period beautifully.
a great read.., 27 Mar 2004
A very good story which keeps you wanting to read. you can feel for the characters. for their loss, their gain, and their lust to have total power over everyone.... well worth the read
Great Read If You Want Something A Little Spicy!, 05 Dec 1998
This book was very gripping from the first page to the last. What distinguishes Bertrice Small from otherhistorical romances is in most of herbooks she broaches the question if a woman or a man can love someone and still enjoy sexual relations with another person.
Romance with exciting adverture leaving you wanting more., 06 Aug 1998
Ms. Busbee has written another wonderful novel filled with history and romance. Fiona is a hidden character in all of us romantics! The book was so intense, I finished it in three days. The ending was somewhat predictable but well worth the reading effort.
Romance at it's best, 30 Jun 1998
This book was more typical of Bertrice Small's recent romance novels. I still prefer her earlier novels like The Kadin or Adora. Romance readers should be prepared for the explicit sex when they pick up one of her books. Bertrice Small is a wonderful writer with vivid historical descriptions.
Bertrice Small at her best !, 28 Jun 1998
While I have enjoyed every book Ms. Small has ever written, this is by far my favorite ! I have already re-read three times...and unable to put it down between readings ! Fiona Hay is a woman between a rock and a hard place throughout her life, doing her duty by her sisters, and to uphold her own honor. She makes mistakes, learns from them and is rewarded by being loved by the two most magnificent men one can possibly imagine. Interestingly enough, I enjoyed the character of Colin MacDonald even more than Black Angus Gordon...what a dynamic, rich character he is ! If you want to be swept up in medieval Scotland, and experience first hand of the 'taming' of the wild northern clans, then "Betrayed" will captivate you completely !
Is there anything lower than one star?, 01 Jun 1999
Fans of the author and anyone who has never tasted one of her novels, wil | | |
