This book is absolutely essential for osteologists, evolutionary anthropologists or anyone with a need to know musculo-skeletal anatomy in detail. Excellent, clear diagrams and well-organised text. You will wonder how you ever managed without it.

You will wonder how you ever managed without it. An exiting review of cultural aspects of sicness and healing, 03 Apr 2002
Author argues about the role of society and culture in everyday health-behaviour. Three accounts of sickness are proposed and viewed in different environmental and cultural settings. While examining anthropological research in medicine, he finds, that even anthropologists in their study are affected by their own culture. Research methods of anthropology and epidemiology are confronted and analysed, finding that there is the potential for collaboration for better problem solving. Observing Biomedicine as a cultural system, Hahn is guiding reader's attention on rules that determine relations between physicians and their patients. Believes and hopes of a physician are opened in the "Portrait of an Intern". To analyse the changing social status of women in the medical setting, eighteen editions of Williams Obstetrics are compared, finally discovering emerging of a new obstetrical patient, the foetus. Author examines the experiences of physicians, who becoming sick, found themselves in the role of patients. After all, the term of "anthropological medicine" is introduced and explained as a supportive element for contemporary Biomedicine. It is spirited and open-minded insight into culture of healing - really good reading for professionals as well as those interested in health-related issues in an anthropological perspective.
