I have been using this book for the three years of my degree, originally buying the first edition then the second when it was published. This is an invaluable resource for 1st year Forensic Science students and the comprehensive introductory material provides good reading for any budding CSI. Throughout my degree I have returned to this book, either as a refresher for learned material or as an introduction to further reading. The content is accessible and I have found that reading this material prior to further reading gives you the background knowledge necessary to understand more detailed specific subject texts.

The second edition does contain useful new material, including birefringence of fibres and archaeology. There is a tremendous amount of good accessible information in here, I can highly recommend it.

The aim of this book is to explain different methods of spectroscopy, from how they work to how to read the spectra. It goes through IR, H and C NMR, UV and so on. Many consider this to be the best book on spectroscopy and it has earned itself quite a reputation. It's also useful for postgraduates because it's more than just a teaching aid; it has many tables inside outlining where you might find that IR peak for a particular functional group or what the chemical shift of something is. On the other hand, if you want a reference text and that's all then there are probably better books than this. I gave this book 4 stars and not 5 mainly because it lies somewhere between a teaching aid and a reference text and despite it being very useful and worth getting, it excells at neither. I'd recommend it.

This book is an excellent guide to statistical analysis for analytical chemistry. It provides the reader with the background to the statistical tests together how it is applied to real chemical data.

This book follows on well from the previous P. Hore primer on NMR.

The subject matter extends to the product operator description and the description of many common liquid NMR techniques. The second half of the book provides a useful QM explanation of NMR.

Overall this book is easy to read and suitable for undergraduates in the final stages of a chemistry degree.

When a lecturer recommends a book, it usually spends many months gathering dust on my bookshelf and I end up wondering who paid the lecturer to recommend it in the first place. However, this book, I wholeheartedly recommend myself, as a student. It was recommended by my lecturer BUT!! it is easy to read, easy to understand, maybe not easy to remember, but that is due to my lack of functioning memory cells and not the authors skill.

...It looks boring, blue and green on the outside....but it's awesome. Buy it right now, even if you're not studying chemistry, just to impress your mates.

An asset to undergraduates and even postgraduates who need a refreshing short book on the basic NMR principles. The book is of course good for how NMR is used for ascertaining inorganic processes/stuctures i.e. fluxionality and isomerism. The book is also just as useful to organic chemists.

For a primer, the book covers a lot of good information on the actual physical theory made use of in attaining an NMR spectrum, which is more important than an UG might appreciate, and they should make an effort to understand these things if the are to fully use NMR at the research level.

Content summary: 1) fundementals - does talk about coupling and relaxation mechanisms in good detail 2) structure determination 3) solid state.

It was recommended by my lecturer BUT!! it is easy to read, easy to understand, maybe not easy to remember, but that is due to my lack of functioning memory cells and not the authors skill.

An asset to undergraduates and even postgraduates who need a refreshing short book on the basic NMR principles. The book is of course good for how NMR is used for ascertaining inorganic processes/stuctures i.e. fluxionality and isomerism. The book is also just as useful to organic chemists.

For a primer, the book covers a lot of good information on the actual physical theory made use of in attaining an NMR spectrum, which is more important than an UG might appreciate, and they should make an effort to understand these things if the are to fully use NMR at the research level.

Content summary: 1) fundementals - does talk about coupling and relaxation mechanisms in good detail 2) structure determination 3) solid state.

Excellent! This clearly written book is perfect for both NMR novices and those with previous experience who want to deepen their understanding of the theoretical basis that underpins modern NMR experiments. The explanations are thorough and lucid, with the key concepts derived from first principles. I am a final year PhD student working in protein NMR and I found reading this book really improved my grasp of the subject - the chapter on relaxation and section on TROSY were particularly useful. I would definitely recommend this book.

I have been using this book for the three years of my degree, originally buying the first edition then the second when it was published. This is an invaluable resource for 1st year Forensic Science students and the comprehensive introductory material provides good reading for any budding CSI. Throughout my degree I have returned to this book, either as a refresher for learned material or as an introduction to further reading. The content is accessible and I have found that reading this material prior to further reading gives you the background knowledge necessary to understand more detailed specific subject texts.

The second edition does contain useful new material, including birefringence of fibres and archaeology. There is a tremendous amount of good accessible information in here, I can highly recommend it.

Andrew Jackson is one of the lecturers on my Forensic Science course at Uni, so it was no surprise to find this book was listed as a core text. I used it practically every day in my first year and now I'm starting my second year I imagine I'll still refer to it for useful information.

I've found it very helpful, interesting and not too complicated (while also not being patronising like some other books).

I would greatly recommend it to anyone who is fascinated by the subject, or for those who have a genuine interest in pursuing it beyond the boundaries of "just for pleasure".

I bought this book as an aid for my Forensic Science degree course and it has been extremely helpful. It contains useful and informative sections on items such as DNA, footwear impressions analysis, explosives, fibres, court procedures etc. The illustrations are also good. I found the book easy to digest and understand, definately recommended, regardless of whether you are studying this as a subject or just want to know more about forensic science.

This book provides information on a wide range of Forensic techniques and enables the reader to gain an understanding of the many areas associated with Forensic Science. The use of photographs, diagrams and charts clearly displays the most important facts and makes the more difficult topics more easily comprehensible. I recommend this text for anyone interested in this subject area.

The best undergraduate book for spectroscopy., 19 Jul 2004
The aim of this book is to explain different methods of spectroscopy, from how they work to how to read the spectra. It goes through IR, H and C NMR, UV and so on. Many consider this to be the best book on spectroscopy and it has earned itself quite a reputation. It's also useful for postgraduates because it's more than just a teaching aid; it has many tables inside outlining where you might find that IR peak for a particular functional group or what the chemical shift of something is. On the other hand, if you want a reference text and that's all then there are probably better books than this. I gave this book 4 stars and not 5 mainly because it lies somewhere between a teaching aid and a reference text and despite it being very useful and worth getting, it excells at neither. I'd recommend it.

This book is an excellent guide to statistical analysis for analytical chemistry. It provides the reader with the background to the statistical tests together how it is applied to real chemical data.

I found this book invaluable for my study of chemistry. It helped me to make sense of everything. I should help me in the years to come. I would recommend this to anyone wishing to study chemistry. Well worth it!

Excellent and rigourous introduction to NMR, 03 Mar 2002
This book follows on well from the previous P. Hore primer on NMR.

The subject matter extends to the product operator description and the description of many common liquid NMR techniques. The second half of the book provides a useful QM explanation of NMR.

Overall this book is easy to read and suitable for undergraduates in the final stages of a chemistry degree.

Overview of Modern Raman, 02 Sep 2005
The book gives a good overview of the modern Raman techniques avaliable. It describes good the pros and cons of Raman, the basic theory behind and some of the possible areas of use.
Can be HIGHLY requmented for EVERYONE working with or about to work with Raman techniques.
- Does NOT have deep Raman theory so this should be sought after elsewhere. Does not have explicit descriptions of the areas covered but gives an EXCELENT overview.
