From the Preface to Nukenomics By Lord Jenkin, 13 Nov 2008
Readers of Ian Jackson's excellent book, Nukenomics, will gain a very deep insight into the economics of the nuclear industry as it was in the past, as it is now, and is likely to be in the decades ahead. It is very well written in an admirably clear style which involves as little technical jargon as possible in what is inevitably a very technical subject. It could serve as a useful introduction to the study of the subject by a layman coming new to it. But at the same time, it could also be of great value to those who are directly involved in the decisions of the Government and of the industries concerned with nuclear power. I can commend it without reservation.
The Rt. Hon. the Lord Jenkin of Roding
An independent account of the nuclear industry., 08 Jun 2008
This is a book that everyone should read, whether working within the nuclear field or just someone who is interested in acquiring unbiased, non-politicised general knowledge. The author presents a clear and readable account of the nuclear industry in Britain today, covering a broad range of subjects which include decommissioning old nuclear power stations, dealing with nuclear waste, and the commercial prospects for supplying nuclear fuel, energy security, global warming and the future of nuclear energy in a low-carbon world. Chapters 1 and 4 (Decommissioning, and the Market for Mox) would be of more interest to those working within the industry, while the rest of the book would also appeal to the general public. Subjects such as the burying of nuclear waste within our community and factors affecting decisions to build new generations of nuclear power stations are emotive issues. Too often, the information we receive comes from radical or politicised sources. Jackson's book gives an opportunity to examine the arguments for and against nuclear issues, without spin or scaremongering. It links political and environmental issues with real-world business and financial issues. I recommend it.
Nukenomics.. takes a serious business take on the nuclear market., 12 May 2008
Bang up-to-date and easy to read, Nukenomics explains how the everyday business principles of economics apply to the nuclear market in Britain. Don't be fooled by the jokey title, Nukenomics is a serious business book written for investors, managers and politicians. The cover price is worth it just for the chapter on the realities of the much-hyped nuclear decommissioning market alone. Written by an industry expert, Nukenomics takes an unsentimental look at how the nuclear market really operates, both the upsides and the downsides in equal measure. Jackson's practical insights look across the full spectrum of the nuclear business, from decommissioning ancient nuclear plants, cleaning-up and selling retired nuclear sites, burying the radioactive wastes and building new British nuclear reactors. If you really want to know how the nuclear industry works today, read this book.

Compelling - and shocking, 24 Jan 2008
Rather to my surprise I found this booklet extremely readable. An alarming, though well researched analysis of the nuclear industry and the false dream that nuclear enthusiasts are offering, concisely and convincingly put. The whimsical selection of bedraggled cyles which appear throughout the text are a delight.

This is a fantastic book which creates an atmosphere of emptiness and desolation. The images are of unbelievable clarity and you will find yourself keep going back to one photo and noticing something new.i did, but when you see the size and quality of the photos you will agree with me that it is worth every penny!!!! Beautifully presented, 11 Feb 2004
Robert Polidori’s photo album tells the story of the destruction of the area surrounding the Chernobyl nuclear power plant – 15 years after the infamous disaster in the plants fourth reactor. This book focuses on the town of Pripyat, a permanently abandoned town near the reactor, where the plant workers and their families once lived – now in the area known as the “Exclusion Zone”. This book is beautifully presented with a close attention to detail. It captures brilliantly, the loneliness and desolation of the human tragedy that happened here and which is slipping out of public consciousness. The photos show houses, schools, hospitals, boats, villages and more as they were between the dates of June 6-9, 2001. This is a large format book and the photos within it are printed with incredible detail. You will find yourself coming back to the same photo’s again and again – each time finding something new. My only disappointment with this book is the lack of a more detailed description to go with the photos. A one-line description is given for most photos at the back of the book but it left me yearning for more – which might not be such a bad thing. I highly recommend this photo journal.

But where is the meat ?, 22 Aug 2007
After hearing Walt on the radio - I had high expectations of this book , but was disapointed by the lack of detail of what a distributed generation network would really be like - as I had understood that his background was that of an engineer in the industry . There is a lot of repetition , particulary the history the current network . I am not saying that there are not some interesting points - but it is more evangalism than detail with substantitive what if scenarios of options and impacts .
There is not really a logical flow to the book as it is a collection of presentation papers that have not really been edited to make them into a book .
Maybe I expected to much
A 'Lightbulb Moment' For Sustainable Energy Policy, 12 Aug 2007
I can highly recommend this book, without any hesitation, to anyone with even the vaguest interest in energy, sustainability and the environment.
At a time when many countries are concerned about climate change, energy security and the challenges that lie ahead; in maintaining our lifestyles in a world of scarce resources, Walt Patterson offers practical solutions and a prophetic vision for how we can adapt our energy industries to meet our future needs.
`Keeping the Lights On', makes for addictive reading, for anyone who is interested in how we are going to meet our insatiable need for electricity in the years to come. The book is pertinent and `of the age' as our governments' launch from policy blunder, to policy blunder, ignoring the lessons of the past and neglecting to think about the ramifications of their actions on our energy future.
Walt Patterson clearly distils over thirty-six years experience as the rational voice of energy policy into a publication which is both accessible and challenging. Walt Patterson brings to the book the benefit of his considerable knowledge and observation of the energy industry over the past several decades to the table, and communicates his vision of the future clearly and articulately.
His analysis is particularly timely, as having witnessed and documented the failures of the energy industry in the past, he can offer a considered; albeit fresh and inspiring take on the current decisions that are being made about our energy policy.
If you enjoy `Keeping the Lights On', I can also highly recommend `Transforming Electricity', also by the same author.
