My review of X W P: Complete Illustrated Companion, 27 Dec 2004
I started reading this book the minute i received it. Although it didn't have as many colour pictures as the xenaverse guide before it, i thought it was well presented and well thought out. I was happy that it didn't focus as much on the start of Xena as the last book had. A vital and necessary book and guide for any Xena Fan. I give 5/5 top marks!
Xena Warrior Princess: Complete Illustrated Companion, 27 May 2003
I got this book this morning, and i ran out to the post man to collect it! i opened it and was happy! it is a comprehensive guide to xena and the making of xena. It has a good back history on how xena became what we know of her, It also explains a little of the politics behind the show. It has good clear descriptions of each episode with disclaimers and things to look out for in each episode. Unlike other books that where done before Xena had ended this book thankfully has been done a long time after and features all things xena! But..... I was a little dissapointed at the condition of the black and white photographs i thought they would be a little clearer and glossy and they werent. Another dissapointing thing is that there are 8 pages of colour photograps, but the rest are in black and white. With this being the illustrated companion i thought at least they could be all in colour, there are more colour photos in Xena Warrior Princess: Complete Guide to the Xenaverse. on an over all thing the book is very very good! a must have for all xena fans!!!

At last - all 6 seasons in one place, 19 May 2003
I've had a look through the book which arrived this morning and I have to say I like what I see. It's been ages since the Weisbrot book which covered the first two seasons and I've been dying to get ny hands on a more up to date guide. It has individual character profiles towards the end and interviews with everyone. The foreword gives a very good account of the genesis of Xena (going so far back as the Evil Dead cabin) and has a realistic look at how (and why) television shows are made. It covers ALL LL's appearances on both Herc and Xena and there is a full 6 season episode guide. I'm quite happy with it really.

Funny and perceptive, 14 May 2007
This book contains about 50+ very short pieces of writing, mostly 1 or 2 pages each, as "written" by Gabrielle while she travelled with Xena. It is also sprinkled with a few memorable quotes, and some photos from the show. The pieces are written in a manner which conjures up Gabrielle's character from the early years very well - childish and frivolous, but very funny and entertaining, and brimming with enthusiasm.
A lot of thought has been put into explaining (fictionally) a wide variety of aspects of her life with Xena, bits of wisdom and a few of life's lessons, all of which are taken at a gallop, and never becoming boring. They contain interesting insights and prespectives which are often not obvious from watching the show, and which have (I would guess) been gathered from endless discussions with other fans. They appear to be in no particular order, and I read them randomly - opening the book and choosing one here or there.
I am very glad I bought it. Don't be put off by people saying it is "childish". When Gabrielle joined Xena, she was endearingly childish and full of fun, and it shines through in this book!
Gabrielle's life line story in one book!, 29 Jul 1999
If you want to learn everything about Gabrielle's life this is the book for you! Her stories and journeys with Xena will thrill and take you beyond the pages of her book. Every chapter has something new, and you learn many things about the way she lives with Xena, and Joxer too. Pick this book to learn more then even Xena knows about Gabrielle's life.
This book will not let any Xena fan put it down!, 23 Jul 1999
This book is a creative way of putting any xena fan on the journeys. It comes from Gabrielle's perspective of lessons, discoveries, friendship, and many things well taught, that she's learned on the journeys. As a Xena fan I recommend it. Though it's fairly short, It will keep you turning the pages all night long! Complete with a Introduction by Renee 'O Connor, I find it a very believable book.
This book crudely portays Gabrielle's thoughts., 08 Apr 1999
This book poorly attempts to offer a glimpse into the scrolls of Gabrielle, relating to her insights and feelings about her adventures with Xena. The style in which it is written is unworthy of any bard, especially Gabrielle. Childish and choppy, the text reads more like a rant than a narration. While Gabrielle may babble and ramble on in normal conversation, any scrolls she would have written seriously would have had some form of elegant expression. The only credit to give are a few interesting references to episodes, but not enough to make the book work.
This book is a MUST READ for ALL XENA FANS!, 11 Mar 1999
This book was excellent! It's a great look at how Gabrielle feels about things that go on in her life with Xena. I absolutley loved it! Any Xena fan must agree, this book was superb!

One for the fans...., 19 May 2003
I really enjoyed it and still occasionally dip into it when I feel the urge for a Xena fix. The book deals with people who simply watched and enjoyed the show and also those for whom it changed their lives in the form of new friends, new loves, new careers or new courage. I have loved Xena since I first saw it and it was great to read stories about other fans and how Xena affected them. For some it was a literal lifeline to sanity and gave them the strength and courage to get through the worst times of their lives. I have to admit myself that there were times when the thought 'What would Xena do?' gave me a much needed lift in troubled times. If you are a fan, you might recognise yourself between the pages...

Cute!, 23 Aug 1999
I have to confess, I have a very strange habit of reading books about baby names. I can actually sit there for an hour at a time reading and saying things like "say, did you know Sally comes from Sarah and means "princess"? This is a pretty good one, many names and their meanings are listed. The author pounces upon the most obvious well known names and makes some comment, but some of the references are obscure or outdated. I wish they would explain why decade after decade certain names just rub against the grain, names like Maude, Bertha, Gertrude, Maurice, Egbert - do they just sound funny or what?
THE BEST BOOK EVER WRITTEN ON A HERETOFORE UNCOVERED TOPIC, 11 Jun 1999
Names, names names. I kept waiting for something to happen but it was just more names. Then I suddenly realized that this was a sly narrative ploy engineered by the author...the story is encoded within the text, if you dare decipher it. It's the tale of a brave super-hero who prowls the dangerous streets of NYC on Thursday nights, using an array of Marmo-Powers to fight crime. Beware, criminal cowards! Marmoset Man is here!

As far as I can judge, and by comparing with the list on the official Xenakis website < [] >, this book describes and comments on all of Xenakis' musical compositions, with numerous figures and musical examples. In my copy a few of the musical examples are printed somewhat faintly, but are just about possible to read. An authoritative guide to one of the major figures of late 20th century European art music.
