THE GAME AND ITS USEFULNESS
Beginners Basketball, 01 Aug 2001
This is a beginners book,so if you know all the basic rules and techniques then don't bother buying it,but if your just starting to bounce a ball around(like I did when I first got this book)and your interested in how to play the game then I would recommend you buy it.It tells you everything you need to know to play basketball, from what you need(incl. measurements on court, what to wear) to the techniques to use,(jump shots, dribbles, passes).I felt it was a bit too detailed sometimes though(giving exact measurements for the ball!),but a must buy for starters as it is cheap, thorough and easy to understand.

Peace of mind on the hardwood, 21 Aug 2000
Having read this book about 3 times already, I can truly say that Phil Jackson has discovered how to make players into superstars and superstars into players. The only thing that seperates players at the NBA level is mental toughness and this book outlines the what, how and why he did it. To get the greatest player ever to play in a team concept is tough and he's done it successfully. This book also provided me with an insight into the art of zen and it's implication on this great game. To summarize, I would recommend this book to anyone who wishes to learn about Phil Jackson and his success in Chigaco
Every hoopster needs to read this, 27 May 1999
This book helped me find peace with myself on the basketball court. Concepts of teamwork and selflessness have never been drilled home so well. My attitude on the court completely turned around after I read and understood this book. I wouldn't go so far to say it changed my life, but it definitely changed my life between the lines of the court.
profound reading experience, 02 May 1999
Like a sinner seeking salvation in the bible, Jackson's book, Sacred Hoops, helped change my life. His words helped me take control of my life by allowing me to understand who I truly am beneath my skin and within my soul. His vision helped me to see more clearly and if I could, I would thank him for showing me a path I would have never ordinarily traveled.
Good Stuff with a great perspective !, 17 Mar 1999
This book is great reading for those who lose faith in modern day sports and society in general. For once, you hear someone talk about teamwork, selflessness, sacrifice, positive attitude, etc. These are foreign concepts to most of today's NBA stars, but are what success is really all about. I also applaud Phil Jackson for daring to be different. Seeing things differently is often at the core of many successes. In this case, its using the power of the mind and selfless attitudes that are positioned as keys to taking you to the top. These ideas transcend basketball and make for good reading for anyone. I only wish their were more "originals" with a conscience like Phil Jackson.

An awesome look at a very talented squad, 03 Apr 2007
I really enjoyed thos book, Jack McCallum really hits all the right buttons on telling you, the reader, how it is to be a part of a lightning fast basketball which the Suns are. I've read over 70 sports books in the past 15 months and this is a top 5 book for sure.
Fascinating Insight, 14 Jan 2007
It's not often that a professional sporting organisation lays itself so bare to an outsider, but this is exactly what occurs when Jack McCallum is allowed into the Phoenix Suns franchise.
McCallum provides a fascinating insight into the working of the team and the camaraderie that exists not just amongst the players, but also amongst the members of the coaching staff. The book focuses on the '05-06 NBA Playoffs, but does give information about regular season occurrences.
A book that will interest basketball fans in the majority, but will also be a good read for those wanting to learn a bit more about the goings on behind the scenes of one of the best teams in American sports.

Big fat Joe's barmy army!, 19 Oct 2006
As an avid Oldham Athletic supporter, it's difficult to be impartial where Joe Royle is concerned. The man is simply a legend. It's fantastic to re-live, through this book, the glory days of the early 90's, the 'pinch me' season, the 3 wembley appearances and the 'great escape'. But that's just Oldham.
This book chapters Joe's life from when he was a child dreaming of playing professional football up until last year when he was still manager of Ipswich Town. (sadly, he's no longer there).
Joe's playing career was good, but management is where he excels, with two promotions with Manchester City and an FA Cup winners medal as manager of his hometown team, Everton.
I bought this book to read about his time as 'Latics' boss, but the rest of the book is just as interesting. Also with a foreword from Alex Ferguson, this book is a great read for football fans worldwide.
Outstanding Man., 08 Oct 2005
This Man is Amazing. He tries so Hard to make Ipswich Town FC the best, and he generally tries to do everything he can to the top of his ability. This is no exception, Brilliantly Written, Well Done Joe - Buy Today, no mistake i guarantee!

A brilliant insight into an alternative career in professional basketball. Whilst Amaechi was not exactly an all star his story is none the less inspiring and unique. The book is not just targeted at basketball fans as its more the biography of an unlikely athlete and the challenges that he faced on and off the court. Don't expect a bling bling insight into the NBA but more an outsiders view from an alternative path. Well written and entertaining this book is highly recommended.

Amazingly helpful, imporves both the physical and mental, 11 Jan 2002
This book is very helpful, it covers how to shoot, rebound, defend, offensive and defensive moves and plays. This book imporves both the mental and physical side to your game. After reading this book you will be able to evaluate your own game and understand which moves to use in games and why!
This book teaches many fundamentals., 17 Aug 1999
This book tought me a lot of fundamentals. It has many illustrations.

Very good read, 28 Jan 2008
A brilliant insight into an alternative career in professional basketball. Whilst Amaechi was not exactly an all star his story is none the less inspiring and unique. The book is not just targeted at basketball fans as its more the biography of an unlikely athlete and the challenges that he faced on and off the court. Don't expect a bling bling insight into the NBA but more an outsiders view from an alternative path. Well written and entertaining this book is highly recommended.
An incredably facinating and inspiring book., 13 Jun 1999

I enjoyed the first half of the book, but after that the insights become a bit repetitive, the description of the playoff-games not very colourfull
and the interest slowly but surely disappears.
I expected a more candid and elaborate story, but maybe that was wishfull thinking, because the tone and choice of words is the same as in PJ's press conferences.
That being said: the childishness of 3 of the 4 HOF-ers throughout the season is shocking and the problems to get players to listen hard to believe. Not only being an ice skating coach but also a qualified circuit training instructor I found this book an excellent guide for on and off ice training. So good in fact I leant it to a collegue who now also agrees how good it is and is going to by her own!!. It covers everything from stretching, plyometrics and off ice conditioning to on ice stamina training, competition preperation, heart rate monitoring and tons tons more. The best ten pound you could spend to further your knowledge.
