Fantastic Book! Buy it!, 01 Sep 2006
I cannot rave about this book enough - it gives tips on training both young and older horses and goes through the basics of Parelli, Kelly Marks etc ... I found it invaluable for groundwork, and this has created a very special bond and respect between me and my horse. And Im glad I did as she's a 18hh 5 year old shire! It tells you all about gaining their respect and visa versa and I cannot stress enough how EVERY SINGLE RIDER/OWNER in the UK should have this book.
If you are having problems with your horse, having a crisis of confidence, or simply want to get that bond of trust and respect between you and your horse, then this is the book for you. ANY FORWARD THINKING RIDER/OWNER SHOULD BUY THIS BOOK.

When I read the extract in the Times I knew I wanted to read the book. And I read it in one sitting and loved every word. If you are a horse owner/rider/lover this book will resonate with you..it says what you know but better and it makes you think. It interpreted a lot of my unacknowledged feelings and experiences of horses in a way that I found not just hugely entertaining but also very helpful. It's a tender, funny, insightful book and you just want Simon on your yard because you know he'd be the best fun!

Very UNnatural horsemanship, 16 Aug 2007
On page 202 there is a photograph of Parelli with a horse sitting down. It states about how you need to get your horse's 'heart and desire' and yet you can clearly see round the horse's back leg the thin hobble rope attached that was used to bring the horse into this totally Unnatural and physically damaging position. It's a shame how many new horse owners are conned into believing in this overhyped man and his 'methods'. A useful read, 04 Oct 2003
I read this book alongside Richard Maxwell's 'Unlock your horse's talent' in many ways they are similar, Parelli's book is less colourful but alot more in depth of the subject. I found it a very useful book for training my young horse, Maxwell teachs the basic but Parelli takes it to a whole new level, highly recommended! circus tricks with a price tag., 09 Aug 2003
Parelli is nothing but a useless way to exploit trust. sorry but that's the bottom line. do not get me wrong, I DO NOT go around beating horses to submission but neither do I waste and exploit my horses trust. how would you feel if someone came up to you, made you stand on a box, get off again then repeat the process, for no reason? this is not a relative exercise for horses, the horse is made to do something that is not relative to itself and also completely Unnatural. if in the wild a horse wasted valuable energy by doing things that were not relevant it would be easy pray, by making the horse do things that make it easy pray, you are, in the horses eyes, increasing the likely hood that the horse will be eaten, in other words you are helping the predator! Another thing I have seen is people standing on horse's backs, sorry but how is that natural?!?!?!! In conclusion, this is one of the most UNNATURAL training method I have came across. Don't waste your time.
Fascinating material, but book fell apart!, 24 Jan 2002
Parelli has his own sometimes irritating style of expression, but the principles and practices outlined in the book are exciting, and the pictures are fantastic. In my opinion, one would need more information than this to put his work confidently into practice. However, additional material is available on his websites, and he travels enough that one could see him in action without too much effort. To our dismay, our softcover copy, after two thorough readings, feel into four segments. I recommend a hard copy if you can get one.
Excellent Reading, 15 Jan 2002
Owning what was termed an "unrideable horse" I plodded away for nearly a year gaining the trust and working with our Caity. Pat Parelli could have saved me much time had I discovered this book earlier. His philosophy is mine. This was what I was looking for. I discovered happily that I was not a "horsey person" - much relief. His teaching is natural and the book emphasises both the rider's and the horse's responsibilities. Tried and tested his methods - they really work.

Hmm..., 07 Aug 2008
I found this book informative, however has a little know-it-all feel to it. It seems to suggest all the answers, whereas there can be many other factors involved. Nice photographs and well written in places, but to be honest unless you are desperate for a book on riding, I would invest money elsewhere.
By far the best horse riding book you will get!, 30 Jul 2008
I found this book whilst browsing in a bookshop in France and as soon as I opened it I had to buy it. It has sections on everything from starting out to top level competition. I goes into surprisingly a lot of detail considering the range of subjects covered. The pages are bright and colourful with lots of photos and diagrams making the book as easy to flick through as it is to read from start to finish. In my opinion its the best book out there if you're looking for an all round horse riding manual.
good for those dressage fans, 10 May 2008
Not what I was looking for anyway.
I wanted a step by step guide to what the learner rider has to do when trotting, cantering etc. As with alot of these books it tells you more about what the horse is doing underneath you! I needed tips ie thusting your pelvis forward whilst trotting in time with the horse-when you've mastered the knack, you and the horse should feel comfortable.
Hey Ho !
There is a lot of stuff for young children who own there own horse though.
Excellent All-rounder, 10 May 2007
I am just starting to learn to ride and found this book very informative. I like the way it covers lots of different topics right from your first lesson up to more advanced subjects. I also like the way it covered different disciplines and gave you an intro into Dressage, jumping etc. There are so many similar horse books out there for a beginner but i think this one is worth the money as its a good all rounder!
The right book for horses and riders, 12 Jan 2007
It's really a big guide for horse riders. It includes everything about riding, rider and horses. If you are a new beginner, this is the right book. If you are a show jumper, this again the right book. If you are an advanced instructer, again this is the right book. Dressage, show jumping, troubleshooting, self improvement for a rider, and more are all in this book. It is a very useful book. You shoul dhave it in your library.

This too makes a lovely reading book BUT its not easy to use, mixing facts with anacdotes, poetry, quotes from philosophers -slightly jumbled
I found it very frustrating.
Full credit to anyone who spreads the word about this fantastic technique though.
Fantastic, 27 Nov 2006
A super book that guides you through getting a better relationship with your horse. If you want to communicate with your horse this is the book for you. The exercises are great and the case studies really benefical
Perfect Manners, 15 Sep 2005
An excellent book. Once you start the first page, you are hooked. A fascinating insight and understanding of how your horse thinks and how your own actions have such an effect on your relationship. Uncomplicated, well illustrated. If you love horses, this book is a must.
The best book detailing modern horse training methods, 03 May 2004
Kelly Marks is an extraordinary horsewoman. She communicates simply, succinctly and with a sense of humour, how to set about training your horse. I have followed the methodology she has proposed and find that it illuminates an otherwise treacherously dim path. I could not recommend a better book anywhere. I've worn mine out completely.

absolutly fantantastic, 27 Dec 2005
If you are into the natural horsemanship then you will like this as much as i did, this was very helpful as i have a nervous 2 year old which i am looking to back in the near future and as i didnt want to pay a fortune for someone to back him, this really gave me some great ideas on how to do this successfully and carrying out some of his ideas we are both loving every minute. It also has some really usefull tips on loading that difficult horse.
An invaluable appraoch to the starting of all young horses, 07 Feb 2001
This approach to the 'starting' of young horses or the restarting of older ones, is absolutely wonderful and a 'must' for anyone interested in starting or even handling horses, in a more humane manner than perhaps has been used before. Instead of the old fashioned way of demanding results and compliance with all our demands, it takes the human into the realm of the horse. By watching the horses' body language and using the language of equinus, so much more can be achieved without bullying the horse or trying to force him into anything he does not want to achieve. By following Richard's advice, the foal, the yearling, the two year old or any horse can be started gently and with kindness and the results are so much more rewarding. Trust between human and horse builds up at each stage and a greater understanding of your horse quickly develops. Reading the book was like opening a whole new chapter on my life with horses. Actually putting Richard's new approach into practice is the most rewarding thing I have ever done with a horse. Both my foal and my two year old are responding to this way of being started and the trust and relationship the horses have with all my family is tremendous. By meeting them half way and trying to understand why they are behaving in a certain manner, makes handling them much easier and so much more pleasurable. IT REALLY DOES WORK. Misunderstandings between the horse and the human are much less likely to occur by adopting Richard's approach, as you learn to look at why the horse is behaving in a certain manner and not punishing him for doing so. I would reccommend this book to anyone with a horse or pony, who just would like to have a greater insight in the workings of a horse's mind or be able to watch their animals and at least have a better comprehension of what their friends are really trying to tell them. It may be that they are telling you they consider you a friend too.

Reading this book, made me smile from start to finish. It felt like the author was having a casual conversation with you, yet reawakening the intuitive part of the brain where we go for gut feeling. I loved his decriptions of his own horse buck! a bond many of use strive for. I was engrosed with the passion and compassion for Buck and the other horses. A light read but packed with feeling. Horses do Try to please us this book showed me humans need to Try to please too.

Excellent book that makes you rethink the way you interact evryday with your horse. Mark writes in a way that is easy to read and understand. This book gives you many real life ecounters of rider/horse situations that Mark has experienced in his life and the way he learnt to overcome any problems. Very thought provoking as well as an enjoyable read.

Mark Rashid's Horses Never Lie, 26 Sep 2002
Wonderful! This is a necessity for all horse crazy people who really care about the way they care for, train, treat, and ride horses. Mark Rashid writes in a completely captivating manner and once you've started you wont want to put it down. He explains everything through short stories of his own experiences both good and bad and you really feel as though you are right there beside him, laughing and crying, it is breathtaking. This is definitely one to read for the equine enthusiast. You will possibly even recognise some of your own experiences through Mark's words and get an idea of how to put things right for yourself. I could not wait to read Mark's other two books.

Great for self improvement, 08 Sep 2008
Every January I clear the jumps out of my arena and spend the month doing excersises from this book and by the end of the month all the horses are more balanced and responsive and my riding is more acurate. Very helpful, especially for those without access to a trainer.
Excellent, 21 Oct 2007
I bought this book having previously bought Jec Aristotle Balou's book '101 dressage exercises', which is very good. This is undoubtedly better - whilst the exercises are equally valid andhelpful, there is much more explanation and a useful cross-referencing guide.... "if this doesn't work, try exercise 38 to improve X."
The 'celebrity' exercises are actually fab - I thought this might be a bit of a sales fad, but it's hard not to take seriously exercises that Sylvia Loch, Tim Stockdale and Richard Davison state as 'essentials'
Perfect book coming into winter when, let's face it, we all sometimes go into the menage thinking 'what shall we do today?'..... this book will give you all you need, and you may never be at a loss again!
Good, 12 Jan 2004
This is a good book for people training their horses and wishing to improve their gymnastic ability. it has good little tips however it's not much use for people with problems with their riding postion at all, because it does not teach you how to ride it. it is used purely for different layouts and spacing. To work though, and build up confidence of horse and rider

Worthy Title, 26 Jun 2008
Reading this book, made me smile from start to finish. It felt like the author was having a casual conversation with you, yet reawakening the intuitive part of the brain where we go for gut feeling. I loved his decriptions of his own horse buck! a bond many of use strive for. I was engrosed with the passion and compassion for Buck and the other horses. A light read but packed with feeling. Horses do Try to please us this book showed me humans need to Try to please too.
Horses Never Lie, 22 Jan 2005
Excellent book that makes you rethink the way you interact evryday with your horse. Mark writes in a way that is easy to read and understand. This book gives you many real life ecounters of rider/horse situations that Mark has experienced in his life and the way he learnt to overcome any problems. Very thought provoking as well as an enjoyable read.
horses never lir the heart of passive leadership, 01 Feb 2004
absolutely wonderful book couldnt put it down, explained lots of things i thought my stupid horse did which were not that stupid after all, a must for every horse owner, or someone wanting to understand their horse better.
If I was a horse I would rate this with 5 stars., 15 Dec 2003
I could not put this book down. The thoughts and actions of Mark Rashid and how he interacts with horses just inspired me to completly alter the way I would like to be around my horse. The format was so easy to read yet you learn so much. Brilliant
To work though, and build up confidence of horse and rider
a useful book to aid preperation, 25 Aug 2008
Have no problems with the book apart from a couple of mistakes in the test questions and on the stopping distances (pge. 12 + 13)
Other than that this book has helped a great deal with the preperation of the test and i would recommend it to anyone thinking of buying it.
Useful for all road riders,, 23 Apr 2001
This is an informative and well laid out little book containing useful information for every road rider. (Which, in this day and age is almost all of us). This book is designed for people taking their BHS riding and road test, but is useful for everyone who needs to brush up on their highway code. I would particularly recommend it to people with little or no road experience. This small book covers many useful road related topics including carriage driving tips and basic first aid. All in all, a good reference book with multiple choice questions at the end , (again for BHS test takers, but useful never the less).

Just wish it had been longer!, 23 Sep 2008
