Fantastic Book! Buy it!, 01 Sep 2006
I cannot rave about this book enough - it gives tips on training both young and older horses and goes through the basics of Parelli, Kelly Marks etc ... I found it invaluable for groundwork, and this has created a very special bond and respect between me and my horse. And Im glad I did as she's a 18hh 5 year old shire! It tells you all about gaining their respect and visa versa and I cannot stress enough how EVERY SINGLE RIDER/OWNER in the UK should have this book.
If you are having problems with your horse, having a crisis of confidence, or simply want to get that bond of trust and respect between you and your horse, then this is the book for you. ANY FORWARD THINKING RIDER/OWNER SHOULD BUY THIS BOOK.

Reading this book, made me smile from start to finish. It felt like the author was having a casual conversation with you, yet reawakening the intuitive part of the brain where we go for gut feeling. I loved his decriptions of his own horse buck! a bond many of use strive for. I was engrosed with the passion and compassion for Buck and the other horses. A light read but packed with feeling. Horses do Try to please us this book showed me humans need to Try to please too.
Horses Never Lie, 22 Jan 2005
Excellent book that makes you rethink the way you interact evryday with your horse. Mark writes in a way that is easy to read and understand. This book gives you many real life ecounters of rider/horse situations that Mark has experienced in his life and the way he learnt to overcome any problems. Very thought provoking as well as an enjoyable read.
horses never lir the heart of passive leadership, 01 Feb 2004
absolutely wonderful book couldnt put it down, explained lots of things i thought my stupid horse did which were not that stupid after all, a must for every horse owner, or someone wanting to understand their horse better.
If I was a horse I would rate this with 5 stars., 15 Dec 2003
I could not put this book down. The thoughts and actions of Mark Rashid and how he interacts with horses just inspired me to completly alter the way I would like to be around my horse. The format was so easy to read yet you learn so much. Brilliant
Mark Rashid's Horses Never Lie, 26 Sep 2002
Wonderful! This is a necessity for all horse crazy people who really care about the way they care for, train, treat, and ride horses. Mark Rashid writes in a completely captivating manner and once you've started you wont want to put it down. He explains everything through short stories of his own experiences both good and bad and you really feel as though you are right there beside him, laughing and crying, it is breathtaking. This is definitely one to read for the equine enthusiast. You will possibly even recognise some of your own experiences through Mark's words and get an idea of how to put things right for yourself. I could not wait to read Mark's other two books.

thin, but fascinating, 07 Nov 2008
I was expecting more from this little book - i'm not sure what - i think it may be the briskness of the canter through the story that disappointed me as i prefer more reflective reads. it's a great story though and people who love horses will find it interesting. for those of us who ride and who have bought and sold horsey friends and enemies over the years it's doubly interesting. but it is kind of like a gossipy newspaper piece that you gobble down with toast and tea and then feel you don't really have a need to read ever again... still, simon barnes' capable journalistic style and lifetime of experience make it worth a look, and it couldn't be a more ideal stocking present for a horsey chum.
Just wish it had been longer!, 23 Sep 2008
When I read the extract in the Times I knew I wanted to read the book. And I read it in one sitting and loved every word. If you are a horse owner/rider/lover this book will resonate with you..it says what you know but better and it makes you think. It interpreted a lot of my unacknowledged feelings and experiences of horses in a way that I found not just hugely entertaining but also very helpful. It's a tender, funny, insightful book and you just want Simon on your yard because you know he'd be the best fun!

I found this book informative, however has a little know-it-all feel to it. It seems to suggest all the answers, whereas there can be many other factors involved. Nice photographs and well written in places, but to be honest unless you are desperate for a book on riding, I would invest money elsewhere.
By far the best horse riding book you will get!, 30 Jul 2008
I found this book whilst browsing in a bookshop in France and as soon as I opened it I had to buy it. It has sections on everything from starting out to top level competition. I goes into surprisingly a lot of detail considering the range of subjects covered. The pages are bright and colourful with lots of photos and diagrams making the book as easy to flick through as it is to read from start to finish. In my opinion its the best book out there if you're looking for an all round horse riding manual.
good for those dressage fans, 10 May 2008
Not what I was looking for anyway.
I wanted a step by step guide to what the learner rider has to do when trotting, cantering etc. As with alot of these books it tells you more about what the horse is doing underneath you! I needed tips ie thusting your pelvis forward whilst trotting in time with the horse-when you've mastered the knack, you and the horse should feel comfortable.
Hey Ho !
There is a lot of stuff for young children who own there own horse though.
Excellent All-rounder, 10 May 2007
I am just starting to learn to ride and found this book very informative. I like the way it covers lots of different topics right from your first lesson up to more advanced subjects. I also like the way it covered different disciplines and gave you an intro into Dressage, jumping etc. There are so many similar horse books out there for a beginner but i think this one is worth the money as its a good all rounder!
The right book for horses and riders, 12 Jan 2007
It's really a big guide for horse riders. It includes everything about riding, rider and horses. If you are a new beginner, this is the right book. If you are a show jumper, this again the right book. If you are an advanced instructer, again this is the right book. Dressage, show jumping, troubleshooting, self improvement for a rider, and more are all in this book. It is a very useful book. You shoul dhave it in your library.

Breathtaking..., 20 Apr 2008
I picked up this book as an "add on" to other biographical writing I was studying for a Creative Writing Course. During the course I didn't get chance to read it; I have seen and heard about Monty Roberts work and decided to read the book for pleasure.
It's an incredible story told simply and with great warmth. There are no pretensions - he just tells it how it is and is very generous with his description of his techniques and the highs and lows of his life's work. This is his (and his familys) story, his journey and his observations on this most noble of animals and their language. It's a mark of incredible generosity that he has put it down in words.
I have been brought up with horses and understood how you treat them with respect and care; in later life I have had very little contact with them. If I ever return to riding I shall approach it from a more gentle, more respectful perspective.
This is not good writing - it's great writing told with great humility and style. It is a privilege to have an insight into his life, passion and work; he comes across as he does in the interviews I have seen as an ordinary man with extraordinary insight, skills and judgement.
He is quite simply unique, as is this book.
Fantastic book, 08 Jan 2008
Not sure if it helps to be into horses but I loved this book. It's the first of the Monty Roberts books I have read and will now be getting the others. Hope they are just as good!
This man is fantastic!!, 26 Dec 2007
Monty Roberts is inspirational. I have admired his work for many years & since learning more about his methods he has helped change (invaluably for the better)the relationship I have with my own 'problem horse'. I could not put this book down. When you read his life story and learn how hard Monty has worked to get where he is today you`ll admire him even more! This book is essential reading for every horse owner/ lover.
Really enjoyed it!, 12 Jul 2007
I love horses anyway so i knew i would like this book before i even picked it up. I thought it was a fantastic read and i just couldn't put down!. I'm not normally into autobiographies but found this one was very well written. Rather than starting from when Monty was young until present day, he interjected other stories along the way top break it up e.g. the visit to the Queen.
The only reason i have rated 4 instead of 5 stars is because there were a couple of instances where i wasn't quite sure if what he was describing was true or poetic licence e.g. the fact his old teacher met up with him years later and remembered the assignment he had written on setting up a horse training facility. Seemed a little 'cheesy'.
On the whole however i really enjoyed it.
Fantastic and Amazing Read, 15 May 2005
I really enjoyed reading Man Who Listens to Horses, Monty Roberts' work is just amazing. I do not have my own horse but when I do I will know how to treat them better now and to understand them move. I could hardly put the book down as I just wanted to know what he done next. I highly recommend reading this book as it really is such a pleasure to read. I have also read 2 other Monty Roberts books - The Horses of my Life, and Shy boy, both are great also, hearing about his life with horses.

Great for self improvement, 08 Sep 2008
Every January I clear the jumps out of my arena and spend the month doing excersises from this book and by the end of the month all the horses are more balanced and responsive and my riding is more acurate. Very helpful, especially for those without access to a trainer.
Excellent, 21 Oct 2007
I bought this book having previously bought Jec Aristotle Balou's book '101 dressage exercises', which is very good. This is undoubtedly better - whilst the exercises are equally valid andhelpful, there is much more explanation and a useful cross-referencing guide.... "if this doesn't work, try exercise 38 to improve X."
The 'celebrity' exercises are actually fab - I thought this might be a bit of a sales fad, but it's hard not to take seriously exercises that Sylvia Loch, Tim Stockdale and Richard Davison state as 'essentials'
Perfect book coming into winter when, let's face it, we all sometimes go into the menage thinking 'what shall we do today?'..... this book will give you all you need, and you may never be at a loss again!
Good, 12 Jan 2004
This is a good book for people training their horses and wishing to improve their gymnastic ability. it has good little tips however it's not much use for people with problems with their riding postion at all, because it does not teach you how to ride it. it is used purely for different layouts and spacing. To work though, and build up confidence of horse and rider

Worthy Title, 26 Jun 2008
Hmm..., 07 Aug 2008

Amusing, informative, an enjoyable read. , 01 Sep 2008
Having bought this book to plug the many gaps in my knowledge on British racecourses, I was delighted to discover a book I found difficult to put down. Stephen Cartmell's warm and witty style was highly informative and very engaging.
The book is full of interesting facts not just about the racecourses but describing the surrounding areas for each one, enabling the casual reader to build up a real picture. Those who enjoy sampling on-course catering have found a sure ally in Stephen Cartmell, as descriptions of the food on offer pepper each piece.
Not just a racing guide then, but a travel book, a food guide and a snapshot of British social history. Be warned if you read it on public transport enroute to a race meeting - it's highly likely that you'll laugh out loud at least once.
ONE NOT TO MISS, 12 Mar 2007
I took a chance buying this book but wasn't disappointed. It's one of the
funniest sporting books I've ever come across but gives you a real feel of British racing and what it has to offer. It says on the back cover that 'Cartmell is afraid of offending no one'. The stories he tells certainly live up to the Racing Post review.
Humorous, informative and more..., 06 Feb 2007
Although I've only visited a few of the courses described within, since reading the book I am itching to visit more. There are some wonderful stories to accompany the sound reference that this book provides making the whole read thoroughly enjoyable!
Little more than a guidebook, 10 Jan 2007
This is just a guide book to racecourses, without any pictures.
I thought it would be a travel book around these courses detailling events and charcters met upon the way and adding a little humour and insight - it fails to deliver in this respect.
All I have done is read the reviews of the handful of courses I have been to and not bothered with the rest.
Should not be seen a travel writing.
Great book for novices and experts alike, 13 Dec 2006
I thouroughly enjoyed this book and am sure it will be used as a quick reference for years to come. I found it both informative and hilarious at the same time and it has definately increased my knowledge on the great courses we have around the UK. It was quite revealing to see how well the Author did in his betting!

David Duncan makes good sense in this book., 04 Jan 2009
If you are looking for a certain way to make money from horse racing then this book is not for you. David Duncan clearly states that there is no such thing as a 'certainty', and rightly so. His twelve golden rules of betting are exactly what they say; golden.
Whether you are a complete beginner or an experienced person in the world of betting, there is something you can take and learn from in this book. David talks about horse selection, racing systems and staking plans amongst many other things. He backs up his thoughts and ideas with good reasonsing and evidence which many other writers fail to do.
By using past experiences, statistics and mathematics, David Duncan has written a concise book which is easy and simple to understand. I believe that the hidden message in the book is that horse racing is all about opinions, and Mr. Duncan's is well worth listening to.
There may not be any certain way of making money on racing, but as this book shows, there are certain things we can do to help improve our chances.
Great Book, 03 Jan 2008
Great introduction to the 'art'. Covers all the areas you need to improve your betting success rate, easy to understand, easy to read and some good advice on betting methodology. Great value for the price - especially as a initial purchase to start a more comprehensive racing collection.

absolutely wonderful book couldnt put it down, explained lots of things i thought my stupid horse did which were not that stupid after all, a must for every horse owner, or someone wanting to understand their horse better.
Brilliant Mark Rashid's Horses Never Lie, 26 Sep 2002
Hmm..., 07 Aug 2008
To work though, and build up confidence of horse and rider Amusing, informative, an enjoyable read. , 01 Sep 2008
Very UNnatural horsemanship, 16 Aug 2007
On page 202 there is a photograph of Parelli with a horse sitting down. It states about how you need to get your horse's 'heart and desire' and yet you can clearly see round the horse's back leg the thin hobble rope attached that was used to bring the horse into this totally Unnatural and physically damaging position. It's a shame how many new horse owners are conned into believing in this overhyped man and his 'methods'. A useful read, 03 Oct 2003
I read this book alongside Richard Maxwell's 'Unlock your horse's talent' in many ways they are similar, Parelli's book is less colourful but alot more in depth of the subject. I found it a very useful book for training my young horse, Maxwell teachs the basic but Parelli takes it to a whole new level, highly recommended! circus tricks with a price tag., 09 Aug 2003
Parelli is nothing but a useless way to exploit trust. sorry but that's the bottom line. do not get me wrong, I DO NOT go around beating horses to submission but neither do I waste and exploit my horses trust. how would you feel if someone came up to you, made you stand on a box, get off again then repeat the process, for no reason? this is not a relative exercise for horses, the horse is made to do something that is not relative to itself and also completely Unnatural. if in the wild a horse wasted valuable energy by doing things that were not relevant it would be easy pray, by making the horse do things that make it easy pray, you are, in the horses eyes, increasing the likely hood that the horse will be eaten, in other words you are helping the predator! Another thing I have seen is people standing on horse's backs, sorry but how is that natural?!?!?!! In conclusion, this is one of the most UNNATURAL training method I have came across. Don't waste your time.
Fascinating material, but book fell apart!, 24 Jan 2002
Parelli has his own sometimes irritating style of expression, but the principles and practices outlined in the book are exciting, and the pictures are fantastic. In my opinion, one would need more information than this to put his work confidently into practice. However, additional material is available on his websites, and he travels enough that one could see him in action without too much effort. To our dismay, our softcover copy, after two thorough readings, feel into four segments. I recommend a hard copy if you can get one.
Excellent Reading, 15 Jan 2002
Owning what was termed an "unrideable horse" I plodded away for nearly a year gaining the trust and working with our Caity. Pat Parelli could have saved me much time had I discovered this book earlier. His philosophy is mine. This was what I was looking for. I discovered happily that I was not a "horsey person" - much relief. His teaching is natural and the book emphasises both the rider's and the horse's responsibilities. Tried and tested his methods - they really work.
