A practical, holistic manual for workplace coaches , 24 Jan 2008
Ten years ago, coaches were essentially consultants who prescribed specific behaviors for clients struggling in the workplace. These days, coaches have much more experience and expertise; the best of them relate to their clients "co-actively," as partners rather than as authority figures. In fact, Laura Whitworth, Karen Kimsey-House, Henry Kimsey-House and Phillip Sandahl contend that such coaching can facilitate fundamental changes in many aspects of a client's life, not just at work, and they outline the skills coaches need to accomplish this. The book includes a CD that explains the basic principles of their philosophy, and an appendix with forms and exercises for coaches and clients. getAbstract recommends it to managers and human resource professionals who want to brush up the softer side of their coaching skills.
A great introduction to coaching, 09 Oct 2007
This book serves as a great introduction to coaching. It is the basis for the coaching training provided by the Coaches Training Institute. However, this book is useful for those people who want to make changes in their own lives, as well as for people looking for a career in coaching. The style is accessible, with many examples and exercises to practice. With the second edition, there is a resources CD that contains forms (for those of you who don't want to mark your books!) as well as audio recordings of coaching sessions, which really bring the book to life. If you want to find out about becoming a coach, or just want to use the skills to improve your own life, this book is a great start.
Essential, 04 Oct 2006
I used this book to complement my in-person training with the Coach Training Institute. It's an invaluable reference tool, taking you through the key cornerstones, contexts, principles and skills of Coactive Coaching. I would highly recommend underlining, highlighting & scribbling on it as part of your continued professional development!

A great model for coaching, 20 Aug 2003
For ANYONE looking to understand the power of coaching and how it works, this is THE book to own. Co-active coaching provides a beautiful model that's broad enough to use with all of your coaching clients and deep enough to enable truly powerful coaching. The book is based on the cirriculum of The Coaches Training Institute coach training program, and even though I earned my CPCC (certified professional co-active coach)certification several years ago, I continue to dog-ear, underline, and highlight this book every time I take it from my bookcase. It gets better with each new read!
A fairly interesting taster for aspiring coaches, 22 Feb 2002
This was the first book I read on the road to becoming a full time coach. It didn't help me take on my first client, but it wet my appetite for coaching and has some excellent tools that I use on a daily basis. It is a reader teaser, it flirted with this eager aspiring coach without ever quite satisfying him. A salad when I wanted a steak. Realistically, I think it is a text book for a course. Worth buying for the tools and an overview of the methods of another of the big US coaching colleges if you are looking for an accreditation course.

Life Sports does it again!!, 29 Mar 2007
Having bought the previous book, 101 Rugby Training Drills, I was looking forward to seeing more coaching material from these guys. You will not be disappointed as the new book delivers some great small sided games that once again are easy to set up, follow and most important for the players, fun to do.
Don't be confused by the cover either, it is great for Rugby Union.

Don't be confused by the cover either, it is great for Rugby Union. Good structured book to start from, 30 Oct 2007
I found this a good read and certainly gives you a good base to work from.
Well worth any coach from teaching under 14's up to use. Its ok for beginners but there is better on the subject, 23 Jun 2007
This book covers a few systems and i like how it shows the system used by professional teams.
Diagrams are easy to follow although I think a book called "Soccer: Modern Tactics" is far better than this as it covers more systems & interviews with Lippi, Ancelotti etc.
Im sure most people will be able to learn something from this book. The set plays section is good A very well rounded book., 07 Jun 2003
I am I5 and am aspiring to become a football coach so although I did`nt maybe need such a tactical book,at this age, I found this book interesting, informative and such that I learnt about different systems and continetal styles.(In which this had a chapter.) I did have some stumbling points with the writer when he wrote about a sweeper in a back four as I would regard a back four as quite flat. eg: Arsenal ,Adams and the offside trap of the 90`s. The writer Jens Bangsbo ,who is now at Juventus as assistant manager, details famous formations from past Juve and Barca sides to describe particular systems in more detail for the reader. In conclusion this is a book which can educate the reader about different systems and one that describes the defence, midfield and attack. Not a wasted buy and as one of my first coaching books it is one I hold in high regard. Good introduction to different strategies, 12 Feb 2002
This book examines the different strategies and systems used in soccer. What I was looking for is something that examines the merits and demerits of each system in more detail than was present in this book. Good introduction to systems used by Barcelona etc. I may be unrealistic. A simple and concise manual for coaches starting out, 20 Apr 2001
The book is well layed out and develops it's subjects well. First explaining the various systems of play - giving examples of internationally renowned teams that have addopted each system - then adding further coaching tips for each system, for set pieces and for motivational work. It can be quite simplistic at times, but is ideal for the coach just setting out; who needs to understand the basics, before moving onto more complex ideas and techniques. This is where I felt the book 'hit-the-woodwork' (sorry for the punn) as the authors could have included techniques on one-to-one coaching with the aim of improving a players abilities such as heading, control, passing etc. The only real minus side for me, was the standard of English, it does let the authors down at times as it can be little difficult to correctly grasp the meaning of a sentence. Otherwise a quality read. Long live the beautiful game!

Bought this as a present for my husband.
A very imformative book with easy and clear drills layed out in it .Everything you need is covered such as warm-up,dribbing,shooting,passing and goalkeeping .As a youth team coach (u8)it has made my training session much more fun and productive. It is suitable for all age groups ,if you only buy 1 training manual MAKE SURE ITS THIS ONE !!!
Not bad!, 08 Apr 2007
This book is well laid out! Its sections and headings are distinct and although some drills are very straight forward, there are others which can be applied to players of all ages!
Every youth coach MUST own this book., 24 Nov 1998
I have been coaching youth soccer at various levels for nearly 15 years, and this past season I had more fun than any year before. The primary reasons: 1) my practices were more fun for me and the players 2) my practices were more productive. Both of these transformations came from reading this book. I wish I could thank Mr. Luxbacher personally.
excellent collection of games to add fun to practice, 10 Jul 1998
Great book for coaches of travel and premier youth players with a 30-minute gap in their practice plan. Helps develop players' passion for the game with a large collection of fun, competitive games. Book helped me change from a well-intentioned, somewhat knowledgeable coach into a good coach with players who enjoy coming to practice. This is the coaching book that I refer to most.

Good ideas and workouts but not the greatest on the science, 09 Feb 2007
I brought this book over a year ago when i first started to get into coaching. I'm currently studying sports performance coaching at uni and a lot of the science written about is very vague. The energy systems are condenced to one paragraph each and that isn't enough.
Also the chapter on macro meso and micro cycles are poor. There is nothing written about regeneration other than the taper.
But if your looking for some brilliant drills and ideas for work outs then buy it for that.
so overall good if you know your science and are just looking for swimming ideas but if your new to the science of swimming read swimming fastest first then buy this.
Comprehensive and Very Useful, 04 May 2004
I have only just got this book, so obviously haven't read it cover to cover quite yet, but after a few hours browsing it certainly appears to include virtually every aspect of the sport that a serious competitive swimmer would hope for. The book seems to have the right balance of text, diagrams, photo's and charts, that acheive virtual instant understanding of the concepts/ideas being put forward. The way it is written also appears to allow you to take your own choice as to what you feel is most relevant for your training program, rather than some books I have read that really do come over as very narrow minded and far too specific. All in all, a very comprehensive, easy to read and understand book that should prove a great asset in most swimmers long term program. If nothing else, it will be a very interesting read as an insight into the thoughts of top coaches.

Buy it !!, 30 Nov 2008
If nothing else, it will be a very interesting read as an insight into the thoughts of top coaches.
buy this now, 07 Feb 2008
this book is a must for any person who is involved in the great game.if you want to improve the person as well as the player then this book is for you!
it has it all from motivation , communication ,goal setting and dealing with parents. if you coach then buy this book.

I could've written this book. Gather together some overpaid wannabe male models who like to kick a ball around badly occasionally, add a coaching team who aren't too bothered, throw in enough money to buy most of the world, lose alot, collect wages. Sorted!
Good information!, 08 Sep 2005
I found the book quite helpfull, how ever i do not believe it is a basic guide! and is not aimed at all ages. There is some good information and drills in the book and some really good questions to ask players about key momments of the game. would advise anyone to buy this after all it is quite cheap and i believe it is value for money.
The Offical FA Guide to Basic Team Coaching, 03 Jan 2005
When reading the synopsis to this book online it clearly states "any age, any level ".When I started to read this book I was surprised to read in the Introduction that in fact it is assumed that the team is 11-a-side with players who are at least 13 years old. So if you are starting to manage/coach a younger team which are at the 7-a-side stage its a bit disappointing. This should have been mentioned in the book details because it would have stopped me and others from buying it. I`ve gone on to read the rest of this book and it has some decent content but really is not ideal for the level in which I was interested in.

This is a series of articles by various top coaches -- some very up-to-date, other less so but still relevant as they tend to be milestones in swimming technique and training. Very good if you want to add to your in-depth knowledge of each competitive swimming stroke.

Buy it !!, 30 Nov 2008
If nothing else, it will be a very interesting read as an insight into the thoughts of top coaches.
buy this now, 07 Feb 2008
this book is a must for any person who is involved in the great game.if you want to improve the person as well as the player then this book is for you!
it has it all from motivation , communication ,goal setting and dealing with parents. if you coach then buy this book.
MMMMMM, 27 Nov 2007
A good swimming anthology., 28 Dec 2001
This is a series of articles by various top coaches -- some very up-to-date, other less so but still relevant as they tend to be milestones in swimming technique and training. Very good if you want to add to your in-depth knowledge of each competitive swimming stroke.
Excellent football reference book, 17 Aug 2002
The contributors to this book are a who's who of college football coaches. There is so many different articles about so many different formations that you can't fail to pick up a few tips for your offense. It can be a bit dry so it's not the type of book that you can read from cover to cover but it is a valuable reference guide for any offensive coach.

The set plays section is good
