Great Stuff, 08 Mar 2007
This is a fantastic book for either an introduction to sport psychology or even at a higher level. I have used this book many times for assignments and it has been extremely good book to use. This is a must for any university/college student studying sports psychology.
A comprehensive yet readable textbook for sports psychology, 28 Jun 2001
I was looking to gain an understanding of the often referred to concept of sports psychology, in an effort to improve my rugby. I found this book was ideal in that it was comprehensive while remaining highly readable. It also has a good visual appearance, which makes you want to read it. Weinberg and Gould have the ability to describe some complex ideas and principles simply and clearly. They avoid the trap of making the subject seem dry and boring and manage to give the subject a vitality of its own. The whole layout of the book breaks the subject down into bite-size pieces. I found I was able to dip quite easily into sections that interested me without feeling lost because I had not read the previous chapter. The use of photographs and diagrams is also well done, enhancing the text and aiding understanding rather than being added just for show. The use of case studies and anecdotes gave me a greater insight into the idea that was being explained. Having read a number of other texts that cover the same sort of ground as this one, I can say this book should be considered the standard by which to judge the others by.
No jargon - just straight forward and readable. Enjoy!, 12 Dec 2000
This is my first year studying Psychology and this book is the most straightforward and easy to read psychology book I have found. It covers a wide variety of topics and research in the area - all in a way that will make you say "oh, I get it". A great book for those studying or for someone who is just interested in the subject.

Mental Training; not just for Sports but LIFE in general too., 19 Feb 2007
This book has many useful tools not just for athletes but also for individuals seeking something better for their everyday lives.
The best section I thought was on setting goals, the wheel of excellence, maintaining positive perspectives and outlook, and how to deal with distraction control, quest for consistency, etc etc.
These are all very important concepts not just for the athlete in training but also for everyday people seeking a goal or purpose in life, maintaining that path to success, and knowing how to deal with every day bumps and grinds and highs and lows.
Book talks about: - Setting a goal, Make commitment to that goal, & Initiate Action to accomplish your goals. Don't let distractions, criticism, or other people distract you from your path.
Sounds simple? But for most of us we really have to work on it! Takes lots' work and discipline to know what you want, work to towards getting it, and not stray from distractions or criticism.
I can't add more than that or I'd be repeating material from the two glowing & highly acknowledged testaments below.
If you feel the need to follow on & be inspired by more GREAT works like this to motivate you further, you really must read "GOALS!" by Brian Tracy. It'll get you pumped!! One of the better sports psychology works, 14 Dec 2000
One of the better sports psychology works which I have come across. Unlike most of the literature this goes into some fair detail concerning the 'how' rather than just the 'what', that is to say, practical steps for the reader to take for improved mental approach and consequent performance. Well written, too. Practical-user-friendly psychology of performance manual., 11 Jan 1999
Terry Orlick manages to weave anecdotal examples of how the mind can be the difference between performance and "peak performance". This book is packed with practical exercises, check lists and "how-to's" to learn and apply the mechanics/techniques of sports psychology. Nifty quotes at the beginning of each chapter. WARNING: It won't turn miracles. It will not give you talent you never had or replace hard work. If you've ever found yourself belaboring a performance error, regularly using negative self-talk or "choking" in those key situations... then this book is for you. It does require a belief... the belief that mental training will work. "Belief is the mother of reality."

Excellent, engaging and highly practical-Pure Billiance!, 12 Jun 2008
This book is a pure gem! Solidly based in the latest research and presented in a conversational and engaging style, it presents the theory of sports psychology in a very accessible way. Perhaps, more importantly, it explains the vital practical steps one can take to apply this theory to enhance performance. And here's the brilliant bit... the WAY in which the material is presented(especially the sections on Imagining, Improving and Mistake Management) have such wide applicability. They allow the reader to apply this knowledge and these techniques to enhance whatever their 'game' is - for example, it could be something practical such as sport, or playing a musical instrument or some form of craftmanship. Equally, these techniques could be applied with benefit to other seemingly more 'abstract' concepts such as building and improving relationships either socially or in the work place. The section on 'Teaming' is essential reading for any one in a leadership position. The thorough analysis of the theory, combined with real examples and topped off with well considered insights from the authors, ensure that this section adds gives a crucial edge to anyone with a serious interest in bringing out the full potential from their subordinates.

A review to consider, 08 Jan 2009
I have just finished reading this book and, despite what some might say, I thought it was a brilliant read. It reinforced views that I already had and introduced useful methods I had not discovered before. Top sportsman are interviewed to discuss mental preparation, motivation and team performance, among other things. The views are expressed in a simple and effective manner, and I took notes throughout. I really enjoyed it!!!
How else are you to get into the minds of the successful...?, 29 Jul 2008
Jeff Grout has met and interviewed many, many top sports stars. This is and opportunity to learn why and how people exceed their best, never give up and lead in their sports.
Covering the sort of topics that you may be told you need to do to be successful, Jeff reveals what life's winners think and do to give them the edge.
You can imagine this being spoken to you as you read the relaxed style.
I enjoyed this.
Uninspiring & repetitive, 27 Mar 2008
Sadly this book isn't what at all what I expected, and overall it's very disappointing. It seems to be more of an advert for a certain mental conditioning company, which is mentioned on just about every other page and at one stage is called by different names. There are several interview extracts with famous sportsmen and women, sadly not too many from the very elite top end (Michael Jordan, Roger Federer, Pete Sampras, Michael Schumacher etc) and far too much repetition of facts, names and stories. It's also poorly written in places and badly structured throughout, but the worst thing was it taught me nothing I didn't already know.

Football revealed, 17 Dec 2008
Football might be the ultimate opium for the people. Why is that? Personally I think it because everybody can win with bit of luck and we can include any explanation we want to account for it. But are the explanations based on facts or things we want to see.
But even if we watch and experience football all the time we cannot helped from having all kinds of misbeliefs about the sport. There is more than meets the eye. Statisics for instance.
In football there are lot of ideas and speculations about outcomes and why expensive players only play well some of the time. What determinates their varied performance? This new book Myths and Facts about Football definitely provides the possibility of understanding the most popular sport in terms of evidence based wisdom rather than speculations. I think it manages to clear many things out. At least this book is deadly serious about the task.
The book cover many different areas like which corner goalkeeper should cover to more practical areas such as what it means to choose football as a carrier. So it touches on various things.
It is a welcomed book that one can learn something new about football.
Brilliant new take on Football, 03 Dec 2008
Having watched and played a lot of football I thought I had a pretty good idea about the game, however, this book has just proved me wrong!! It looks at football from a different angle, an angle which is backed up by science. For example, it explains why a keeper should stay in the middle of a penalty shootout and not dive, or, that scoring just before half time doesn't really matter.
A brilliant book for people who want to know facts about football and be amazed how many myths there really are.
After reading this book you won't be able to watch a football match witout thinking John Motson doesn't really know what he is talking about.

Hands on Reading for a Hands on Profession!, 16 Jan 2008
A comprehensive guide to sports massage, ranging from ethics of practise and client care right through to detailed analysis of practical techniques and sports injuries.
This well laid out reference manual is ideal for students of the subject and the practising therapist alike. An absolute must for the library of anyone in the industry worth their salt.

A solid foundation of holistic massage for beauty therapy students!, 08 Nov 2008
Francesca Gould writes in her own very informative style. As with many other books written by her; such as her book: Aromatherapy for Holistic Therapists; this book is again written with great expertise and sound knowledge of the subject area she is writing about. As with all her books they provide the foundation for the subject and are useful for tutors to plan lessons and also for students taking courses of beauty therapy and holistic therapies. First class instruction!
Don't buy this book if you are not a holistic therapist!, 25 Nov 2005
As the title says 'Body Massage for Holistic Therapists'. I bought the book as I wanted something a little more indepth than the average Massage with oils book. I have a few basic books and wanted a challenge.
Unfortunately this book was too advanced for me! Think I was just being a little over enthusiastic!
Great if you are a therapist.

It's been emotional, 12 Sep 2005
This is more than just a book about football and the following of. There are plenty of great football references true, but overall Palmer's book is about his own personal and very moving journeys, not just his travels following the most fascinating football team around. If you're looking for the usual footie violence and our gang's harder than yours fodder, you'll be disappointed. If you're looking for a very peronal, insightful, emotive and entertaining book, you will not be disappointed. This book is from a fan expressing themselves in a highly touching way and how anyone can accuse it of being shallow is beyonf me, they must have been reading it upside down or with their blinkers on.
The best Leeds Book Ive Read, 29 Jul 2005
Got this from the Leeds shop in Leeds city centre. Din't like to see Venables on the cover, but bought it anyway. Good read. Funny. Lots of good memories. And bad ones. Think the author handles the difficult stuff well.
Good read for a Leeds fan, 08 Jul 2005
I loved this book. My mates went on about it so much, that I had to get it. It's about Leeds United before it all went down hill. It's honest, warts n all. What I like best is that the man who wrote it doesn't make himself out to be the best Leeds fan in the world. He's just a normal home fan (and a few away games) like most of us. He has a life as well as football and has to juggle. I have kids, a wife, limited cash. I can't justify going to every game. So, that half the book is about watching on TV or listening on the radio, rang a lot of bells with me. Also, the writer takes the mickey out of himself. I like a writer with a sense of humour. Eight out of ten.
An Honest Account for the Common Fan, 27 Jul 2004
The review below is somewhat harsh. This is an honest account by a fan who writes of over 800 games attended in 25 years. I found his commitment to his ill wife over his football club moving rather than irritating. If you don't have a 100% record since 1919 and you have more to your life than football, I'd recommend it.

Brilliant Read, 11 Dec 2008
This book is exceptional. I actually found this book by accident, but I'd like to put it another way, this book found me. Forget those who criticise it for its American sports examples, look beyond that. Apply it to your entire life. This book is simple. It draws on all those great sayings you've heard at some stage in your life. I reccommend you read a chapter of it every morning. Its a brilliant motivator. The only problem is, this read can't go on forever.....
On the head, son, 16 May 2008
Gary Mack's book on the importance of your thinking processes in sport (and by extension in life) has two problems. Firstly, if you don't know American sports in the Nineties then many of the names in his anecdotes will be unfamiliar. Secondly, for those who do know American sports in the Nineties some of the teams he has advised are not exactly stellar. But this just means you need to read with care, and if you don't share the inordinate interest with golfers (or cannot avoid the thought that this is just sport, what about life?) you can go straight to the summary points at the end of each chapter. These are annoyingly smug and even more annoyingly they do seem to work.
Mack uses many of the processes of NLP with an helpful dollop of commonsense. So please don't be put off by the anecdotes concerning unknown but obviously revered athletes. He packs much the same message as an Anthony Robbins book but in much less space.
Not for me, 05 Jan 2007
I play badminton quite a bit and wanted some tips and techniques to help with the way I think about and think while I play the game - I found nothing useful here. Filled with unnecessary anecdotes and clearly geared towards those aiming to or actually competing at a high level, although I'm not sure if it would even be useful for them. Much of the contents seemed 'obvious' to me.
I hope my competitiors dont read this....., 18 Dec 2006
Once you get past the perhaps unfamiliar American sports, anic dotes etc, the message is simple and clear. It's not a cook book full of formulas, but straight to the point. and it does get results.
Not suitable if you are not familiar with American sports..., 23 Aug 2006
...and generally not very good either. When one reads a book that quotes and refers to our sporting heros, it's hard not to be emotionaly affected by the book - you can transfer the messages in the book to memories that you have of your particular sporting heros. When you have no knowledge of the people that are used, the book's real content becomes exposed - which is a collection of uninspiring anecdotes from athletes that I have never heard of.

Top sportsman are interviewed to discuss mental preparation, motivation and team performan | | |
