Great, dark & gritty, 12 Sep 2007
I'm a big fan of 'grittier' storylines and this book is a great addition to modern horror I think.
The characters are believable and the story involves you with them very well, taking you on an interesting journey through Vivian Vande Velde's world of modern vampires. The main characters, Ethan & Kerry end up being chased by fanatical vampire-hunters as well as the authorities - exposing not only Ethan's vampire friends to danger but also Kerry's close human family.
Overall, this dark story is engaging with the reader and makes for a good night-time read.

My GOd! jeje, this book was soooo good! i was SO Hooked! i mean, i loved it soooo much that i was reading the book during class!lol the plot is amazing! really really good! Ethan, it one of the best characters i have ever read in a long time! i ADORE him, his personality, his everything, and it just seems perfect for Kerry to fall into place with him! the ending was sooo very very breath catching! i didn't know wat was going to happen! and it was sooo sad in the end, i didn't want that to happen(not saying wat happend, incase of spoilers) aannnddd...like the others said!! Ethan said he can take the vampire out of him! so there must be a way for her and ethan to b together, i mean read how desperate and sad they were to separate!
PLEASE, OH PLEASE, VIVIAN! PLEASE WRITE A SEQUEL, you can't end it like this, PLEASE write another!!

an ordinary night in the extraordinary, 06 Apr 2006
Two complete strangers, one long night and a hint of something not quite natural and you get this fantastic book. All the action takes place in one night, the authors pace is relentless just like her characters your exhausted by the end of the book. But when it finally gets there you want to rewind the whole book, like a good film, and rewatch it. Immersing yourself in the smells and the sights. Terrific. Kerry didn't expect a simple trip to the launderettte's to retrieve her brothers teddy to be quite so eventful. She didn't expect to get cuaght up in a kidnap scenario and have to rescue some random guy called Ethan and so begins her extremely long night. Kerry finds herself caught up in a night of bizarreness that she just cant seem to shake off. And what is it with Ethan? What's so strange about him.....?
trust gone wrong, 03 Jan 2004
kerry nowicki didn`t realise doing a favor for her kid brother would go so wrong.she thought she was doing the right thing helping out ethan bryne, not seeing in the future it would put herself and her family in danger. The characters in this were excellent-Ethan was the best;you never knew when he was lying or telling the truth.Everything in this was well put and described. This is a book that needs a sequl. So if you like vampires, romance, action and danger you`ll love this.
BRILLIANT!!!, 20 May 2003
I read this book when I was in High School, I just found it lying around in the liberary and thought that I would give it a go. After I read it once I couldnt put it down, I even read it three times in one day. I agree in Vivian Velde making a sequal, I think she left it open for it. The couple Kerry and Ethan were obviously destined. Ethan said that their was one way for him to reverse the vampire inside, he never disclosed what it was. Lets just all hope for the best. PLEASE VIVIAN GIVE US A SEQUAL.

THE BAR CODE REBELLION, by Suzanne Weyn, is the second book about seventeen-year-old Kayla Marie Reed and the world she lives in. In 2025, when the novel takes place, everyone, at the age of seventeen, is required to be tattooed with a bar code. The bar code is what people use for everything, from paying for bus fare to getting a job. In the first book about this world, THE BAR CODE TATTOO, Kayla's neighbor, the now-famous Gene Drake, was killed in a struggle because he had discovered something terrible about the tattoo, and wanted to tell the world.
More terrible, it seems, than what Kayla and other bar code resistors already know: that the tattoo contains each person's genetic code, gained from the blood sample taken when they are tattooed. These codes can ruin a person's life, if they have problems such as bipolar disorder or Parkinson's disease in their family. That's what happened to Kayla's friend Amber and her parents.
Following Gene Drake's example, people everywhere are resisting the tattoo, even though it means forfeiting any chance at a normal life as a part of society. People are burning off the tattoo, or, if they join in time, refusing to get it in the first place.
One day, Kayla sees a girl on TV with her face, telling people how happy she is about the barc ode tattoo. Next thing she knows, this girl is everywhere, pretending to be Kayla, and promoting the bar code tattoo. Is she a digital fake? Or is there more to it than that?
Suzanne Weyn's novel takes place in a scary future society. It's especially scary because it really could come true. We've all read books about what the future will be like, and chances are, none of them are exactly right. Everyone predicts, though, that the government will have more and more control over our daily lives, maybe even getting to the intense and frightening level like that in BAR CODE REBELLION.
In this story, characterization takes a backseat to the action, but that's okay, as it's meant to be more about the plot and the setting than it is about the characters. Even though the characters feel a little two-dimensional, it's still a book worth reading, especially for fans of THE BAR CODE TATTOO.

Product Description
There are almost too many sub-plots in this book to fit into one novel. Giles has a new girlfriend, a supply teacher who seems to be making him even more vague than usual. Buffy's mother has a date, and while Buffy is out slaying vampires who should turn up but her old flame Pike. He helped her when she first became a Slayer at her previous school in LA, and now he needs her help. He's being pursued by Grayhewn, a stone demon who turns people to stone with a touch. Meanwhile, the mesmerised Giles is captured by a vampire who brings back some very personal memories. It's all very complicated, but despite the breathless action Buffy still has time to agonise over the two men in her life. She knows she has no real future with Angel the vampire, but Pike hates the whole slaying gig and is likely to move on as soon as Grayhewn is dealt with. She envies Willow and Oz and wonders if she'll ever have a normal relationship. The sub-plot involving Giles's past is interesting, but might have been stronger if not competing for space with the Angel-Buffy-Pike triangle. However, this is still a strong entry in the series. --Liz Sourbut

OK. Here we go. Buffy finds a potential Vamp victim isn't so helpless as she first thought. after fighting off his attackers we find out it's Pike (Buffy's former boyfriend from the movie/Origin graphic novel). He's run into demon trouble and has come looking for help. All the characters are here (well, from season 3 anyway, no Anya Faith and Tara, but Oz and Cordy feature). All behave as the would in the TV show (Giles is kinda weird to begin with, but that's part of the story). My only complaint would be the 'Big Bad' for this story. starts off as a cool concept, but gets a bit confusing towards the end. Aside from this it's one of my favourite Buffy novels, we find out about 'pre-Sunnydale' Buffy, there's an interesting Pike/Buffy/Angel love-triangle plot thread (why didn't Joss bring back the Pike character in the TV series? it woulda been so cool! He wouldn't even have had to use the same actor, all the recurring roles (Buffy and errr...Merrick) were re-cast anyway. An essential purchase for any fan of the novels.
One of the best Buffy books written!, 01 Jul 2001
The fact that you learn something more of Buffy's past from a somewhat different angle makes the book interesting enough. However, with the added feature of Giles' love-life after Jenny Calendar added makes the book brilliant! The book also has some of the best charcters in it, including the Scoobies and Angel. An excellent book and well worth the read!
This book is very easy to get into and very hard to put down, 15 Dec 2000
This story should have defiantly been televised! It's a must read for all Buffy Fans!

OK.

WOOOWWWW!!!!, 20 Jan 2007

We've all read books about what the future will be like, and chances are, none of them are exactly right. The seedy carnival looks like just the thing to give buffy and her friends, a break from staking bloodsuckrs. but then buffy senses something evil behind this carnival and the way john vornholt writes this is tremendous! xander and willow aren't sure. they don't buy buffy's notion that the carneys are somehow connected to the corpses turning up around sunnydale. it doesn't help that her two best buds are both interested in somebody at the carnival. can she find out what's going on in time to save her friends or has the slayer become the prey is the question this fantabulous writer has written on everyones lips! GREAT! 10 out of 10!
The most realistic portrayal of the Scoobies as teenagers, 16 Jan 2002
As if there is not enough fun stuff happening in Sunnydale, a carnival comes to town. Buffy, Xander and Willow head out for some serious rest and relaxation only to discover things are not as they seem and now the corpses popping up around town bear the marks of coyotes not vampires. But while Buffy is suspicious, Xander is smitten with Rose, a seductive siren from the carnival midway, while Willow has caught the eye of Lonnie, the barker. Somehow, you just know all the pieces are going to come together and it will then be Slayer time. My complaint, such as it is, is that John Vornholt has made Buffy, Xander and Willow more like real teenagers than they appear on the show, which ends up being something of a tradeoff with the show's trademark humor. I know how ironic it is to judge his realism by the standard of a television fantasy. This is still an above average Buffy novel. It is also rather interesting to read this book and know that Willow is going to end up dating Oz down the road, since our favorite gal pal spends some serious timing kissing a carney guy who turns out to be a werecoyote. Of course a lot of water has gone under the bridge since then, but the true Buffy fan still remembers when.
Excellent!, 11 Apr 2001
This book would have made a great Season One episode and will be enjoyed by Buffy fans of all ages.

The blurb on this is misleading as you may believe that there are production notes and behind the scenes info contained in the book, but it is simply a collection of transcripts... Nice to read the brilliant scripts nevertheless, hence the 3 stars.
Fantabulous... for the hardcore Buffy fan, 30 Oct 2001
Often considered as one of the best seasons of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, the Season Two Script books are a must for any hardcore Buffy fan. Featuring the original outline scripts for the first six episodes, this book is ideal for anyone interested in the production side of Buffy, and for any budding scriptwriters to see an actual hit television show transformed from paper format to television. It's also a good read and an easy way to find quotes and dialogue from a particular episode.
Intersting!, 05 Aug 2001
I wasn't sure about this when I first bought it but it is actually quite good! It is exactly what it says, the script of some of the fave Buffy episodes. I enjoyed reading the script for Halloween as I could imagine the actors acting it out. It is a good read if you know the show, but it is better to actually see the television show!

bye bye:) an ordinary night in the extraordinary, 06 Apr 2006
Courtesy of Teens Read Too, 31 Dec 2006

OK.
The best Buffy novel, 14 Dec 2000

Excellent read!, 16 Oct 2000
this was the 1st buffy book i read (i'm hooked to the books as much as i am to the series) and i absolutly LOVED it! its very confusing at first, but just as it all smooths over, a huge twist arises! the humour is perfect, the characters are displayed in the book as they are in the series. all-in-all a great bargin!

This book is a great read so i thoroughly recommend it to all Dawsons Creek Fans and those who aren't.So check it out NOW!!!!!!It has all you would expect from an episode of DC, more teenage angst, romance, drama, emotion and fun in the sun, which undoubtabley keeps us hooked every time to Dawson, Joey and Pacey.....everyday Capeside!!
A big disappointment, 09 May 2001
...I would have to say this is not a read for an intelligent B fan. The charactors and scenarios are borrowed, but they do not talk or act in the way we see them in the show. A few quotes from TV are thrown in to attempt to marry the two medias, but the result is nothing but cringe-worthy. Anyone reading it and expecting to enjoy it the way they do the show will be bitterly disappionted. The story is juvenile and tedius, the characters shallow and unrealistic and the connection to the show no more than simple namesake. Save your money and buy the vids, it just DOES NOT work.
An interesting read, 05 Feb 2001
This book is a brillant start to a trilogy. Although slow to start with the book soon picks up and is an easy read.
its a great and interesting book, 06 Sep 2000

Of shapeshifters and skin walkers, 20 Sep 2005
This book would have made a great Season One episode and will be enjoyed by Buffy fans of all ages.

this is a great book with an even better twist at the end. it is confusing if you haven't read any older buffy books!
Good, 20 Aug 2000
I am a really big fan of Buffy and i have read all the Buffy books but this one disappointed me a bit. Although the middle and the end was good, the beginning was boring and nearly made me stop reading it but i didn't and found the book quite good at the end.
OK but not worth the money, 27 Mar 2002
The most complex Buffy and Angel story slowly winds down, 01 Jul 2002
Halfway through "Long Way Home," the final book in the Unseen Buffy/Angel Crossover Trilogy by Nancy Holder and Jeff Mariotte, the story gets as complex as a Tom Clancy novel. At one point, in terms of plot threads, (1) Buffy, (2) Angel, (3) Spike and (4) Salma are all in different alternities; back in Sunnydale (5) Riley is dealing with a shadow monster, (6) Giles, Xander and Anya are looking for Riley, while (7) Joyce is at Giles' apartment worrying about Buffy; in Los Angeles (8) Wesley, Willow and Cordelia are trying to get Alina to fix the Reality Tracer, as (9) the Latino gangs are fighting the Russian Mafiya, (10) Nicky is having a heart to heart with his grandmother; (11) Kate is investigating the disappearance of all the kids and (12) Faith is having fun in prison; meanwhile (13) Mischa is still planning on meeting Alina at the Grand Canyon. I think that covers everything, since there are no scenes of Gunn or the Flores family doing anything at this point and I assume Dennis was already finished with the dishes back at Cordy's apartment. What all these plot threads mean is that Buffy and Angel are competing for time with every other character in the story, so those who pick up the Unseen Trilogy hoping for the two main characters to spend significant time together, are going to be disappointed. All you have to do is look at the front and back covers of "Long Way Home" to know that Spike and Faith are supposed to have prominent roles in the story, but Spike gets caught in something of an alternity dead end while it takes a while for Faith to become involved, even when you know what the plan is regarding the reformed Rogue Slayer. The last part of the book basically has all those groups meeting and slowly reducing the number of plot threads until we are down to three locations where stuff is happening. There really is not a big climax here; it is more a case of things winding down. When reviewing the first book in the Unseen trilogy I commented on the inherent problems with characterization in writing Buffy/Angel books, so that most of the characters are pretty much treading water. This time around I want to point out one plus and one minus in this regard: on the plus side, Holder and Mariotte do a really nice job of fleshing out Riley's feelings for Buffy, their relationship, Angel, and a lot of other stuff going on. But on the minus side of the equation I think Faith regresses a bit too much to where she was before the big confrontation with Angel. Another nice touch was that the writers presented Buffy and Angel as having different conceptions of what the best of all possible worlds would be. The bottom line is that while the Unseen Trilogy is not the grand epic we saw with the Gatekeeper Trilogy, it is a worthy effort. But next time there is a Buffy/Angel crossover, the two starcrossed lovers better be together for a bigger chunk of the action.
I expected/hoped for more., 13 Oct 2001
Logistically, it is very difficult for the TV shows 'Buffy' and 'Angel' to manage crossovers. Bearing that in mind (and Holder's earlier success in doing what the show can't in the 'Gatekeeper' trilogy) I hoped for the crossover novels to be real crossover events; instead, we got two ends of the same problem worked, true, but from the usual groups. There was very little interaction between the established LA and Sunnydale groups - Willow crossed over, there were phone calls, and Buffy and Angel spent a bare minimum of time with each other in the alternities. Apart from that, this could have been a BtVS novel and a separate Ats novel quite easily. There's amazing potential in full-cast crossovers; I expected something specifically billed as a crossover trilogy to fulfill a lot more of it. Once again, characterisation took second place to numerous fight scenes. Attempts to build up the original characters came to a glaring stop in favour of tales of woodland sprites and dragons. I was interested in Buffy and Angel in their unknown realities; instead, I got interminable scenes of the gang in Sunnydale and the gang in LA, culminating in a miniscule payoff (collecting the lost teens takes about ten pages of 350) and Spike. Spike gets his very own subplot in this part of the story, which besides being pretty dull has absolutely nothing to do with anything that has already happened. There's a distinct feeling the authors just needed to get him in somewhere and couldn't fit him in with the Scooby Gang. Similar is the Faith subplot; though this actually has a decent purpose, it seems to have been levered in so Gunn and Riley would have something to do. It's true that Holder and Mariotte had to work within established canon and so had very little room in which to maneouver, but the characters feel entirely unchanged at the end of the series. Continuity was generally good, except for a glaring error concerning Xander referencing an incident very recognisable as being from season 5 (the story is supposed to take place the summer before 5). This book is worth reading as the last part of a trilogy that isn't particularly worth reading. A disappointing follow-through of an interesting premise.
For Slayer Chicks and Angelic Boys who love scifi/horror, 11 Sep 2001
Sometimes it's hard to read a book that has either been made into a TV show, or is inspired by characters from it, because the picture of the characters in it that the author paints are so different to the counterparts on screen. This time, however, the character in the book have Sarah Michelle Gellar and David Boreanaz as their inspiration. The premise of this book, bringing together Angel and Buffy again, is a good one. After all, the chemistry of the characters in the first Buffy series extended a long way beyond the actors, and there is certainly something very intriguing about a vampire and a vampire slayer working together for a common goal, and even falling for each other in the process. What is accomplished well in this book is a good visual description of the creatures they encounter, although for a while I was concerned that Buffy and Angel had merely wandered into a game of Dungeons and Dragons because the adventure/escape from mystical land aspect is a little overplayed at some points. At first I was worried that the 'stuck in a parallel universe' story has been overused in most horror/scifi writing, and so this didn't immediately grab me as some of the previous Buffy offerings. Truthfully I picked it only because I am such a huge Buffy fan. Now I am glad I did read it because despite the initial misgiving on plot, it was hugely enjoyable, with interesting twists in the tale, surprises and suspense around every corner, and a style of writing that makes you want to keep reading until you find out how Buffy and Angel are going to escape this parallel world and get back to Sunnydale as we know it. I'd recommend it to any sci-fi fan, any Buffy fan, and anyone who likes an easy read, but if you're hoping for more of an intellectual challenge, you'll probably find the likes of 'The Lost Girls' better for unexplained/horror mystery, or Dean Koontz better for length.
great book for buffymaniacs, 11 Sep 2001
i really enjoyed this book, i found it great. i definitely like the crossover idea. Angel and Buffy have a difficult time in this book. I think all buffy followers will love the story, which is lively, thrilling and really well written. As a continuation of the previous parts it takes up almost seamlessly. The emotion and tension of the story, the incredible creatures, settings and situations, the confrontation of the two leading roles kept my interest as a reader during the whole book, which i devoured in just a couple of days in one of my classic almost non-stop reading marathons, as it is one of those books which you just can not drop at almost any point. i would like to see this on film or tv at some stage. the trilogy is great (i have chewed them all at light-speed as soon as they went out) and it would be nice to film it, even if one might say it is not a star wars trilogy. The only negative aspects i appreciate in this novel are that it is a bit confusing in places. It is a piece of sheer genius, informative yet scary, fun yet knuckle clenching. It is extremely well-written and has a great potential.
Fantastic, 10 Sep 2001
these three books are completely true to the characters from the series, they sit between the end of season four and the beginning of season five. the capture the essence and feeling of the series and include thrills, chills and most importantly laughs. you will be on the edge of your seat, i read the first two and was in agony awaiting the release of the third, nancy holder and jeff mariotte has achieved a spectatcular storyline, which should be the first ever full length buffy/angel film if ever one is made.
