It's okay, 28 Nov 2008
This book is okay as a basic guide, however it has a few flaws...
1) Most of the information is easily available on the internet.
2) It sounds as if the person writing it has never heard the opinions of the students at the universities or been to them, it's just facts and figures, so you don't really get a feel for the universities.
3) It doesn't include colleges, such as the university college for the creative arts, it's not a university but it has university courses and validated BA hons degrees. There are a lot of Arts colleges like this that have not been given university status because they only do one subject. Many are now being given this status but a lot still do not have it, so this guide was not very inclusive when it comes to looking for an art degree.
Overall i don't think this was worth the money as it was just facts and figures that i could find easily online. I would buy a differnt guide next time.
Very useful, but..., 01 Sep 2008
I had been using this book in careers class to help me decide which universities I was going to apply to, and this book was exceedingly helpful for this task.
This book gives a league table of universities and also ranks them by each subject for example, Law or History. Another important aspect of this book is that it describes the universities making it truly invaluable to any A-Level student.
However, I only gave this book four stars because the vast majority of information is available online - in the Times website and also through the universities' websites.
Overall I would say that this book is very useful and definitely needed for any student who wants to make the right choice of university - after all it is one of the most important decisions you will make!
Excellent, 23 Jan 2007
Required reading for anyone considering or planning to go to University in the UK. A mass of well-researched, well-analysed data and information that helps one make much better informed judgement on one of the most important decisions of one's life.

comment about Levi Straus, 10 Jun 1999
I've only seen the comment about Levi's and it's completly wrong. Levi was unemployed and made the pants out of sail cloth. Dyed them so they would look more like suit pants. A miner saw them and thought the tough material would make them good mining pants (1849 49ers). The pockets were added to carry rock samples. The rivets were added because the weight of the rock samples kept tearing the pockets loose. I wouldn't buy a book when the first thing I read was wrong.
My whole family has used this book for years, 06 Feb 1999
When I use this book in school or university people always marvel ask where I got such unique information
One book for a desert island!, 31 Dec 1998
I wore this book out. I read it, reread it, bookmarked it to death and referred to it so often. Now I need another one. I'm going to buy *two more*, just in case.
Excellent reading., 19 Nov 1998
I didn't learn this much history in school. It is amazing to learn that customs we practice today have their roots hundreds, even thousands of years ago. Ages high school to 100 will enjoy this book.
great book for hard to buy-for in-laws, 07 Jul 1998
A great book for people interested in just about everything. Since the book is so diverse you are sure to find something for everyone. A wonderful choice if you need to get a gift for someone very hard to buy for. I've not met anyone who hasn't thoroughly enjoyed the book. Frankly, I think its a terrific "bathroom" or guestroom book.

Aimed very much at older teens, 30 Dec 2007
This book is good, and has a lot of interesting material including plenty of writing directly by gifted kids. Overall though, the length, style and content of this book are more suited to older teens (yes, even gifted ones), and there is one chunk on choosing a college in the US system which take some translating for those of us on this side of the pond. I would love to see a version of this book for 9-13 year olds.

a real downer..., 26 Jun 1999
This book made it seem like if you didn't have a 4.0 GPA and a 1600 on your SAT that you didn't have a chance to get into the top colleges in the US, which is not true! She DID explain the admissions process, but didn't give any tips on how to increase your chances. the book was also poorly organized. Try another book besides this one.
This book is a must read for serious applicants!, 03 Jun 1999
I highly recommend this book - it was very readable and includes invaluable information about the college entrance process. If you really want to figure out your chances of getting into a school or even just want to find out what kind of essay to write, read this book! There were some seriously eye-opening parts to this book. I even think that those who are not going for an Ivy League school would get a lot of useful information from this book.
very helpful in dealing with admissions process, 16 Apr 1999
This was the best of many books on college admissions I read. It was very helpful in understanding how to design college application including essays. Our child was admitted to Harvard, and this is first book I would recommend to parents and students with similar goals.
A book for talented writers, 22 Mar 1999
Mr. Bauld gives some of the best advice on writing I've ever read. He tends to be sharp and even sarcastic, but for talented writers he can be a great help. He certainly gives an accurate description of the type of college admissions workers who read student applications. For most students applying to most colleges, however, Bauld's advice is intimidating. Most colleges put essays on their apps for two reasons: to see if the applicant can write a simple essay, and to learn something new about the applicant that may not appear or be fully explained on other parts of the app.
This book is AWESOME, 26 Feb 1999
I'll be terse: this is a must-read for everyone planning to attend a good college. Even if you're not planning to go to the Ivies, there are SO MANY useful tips that apply to ALL. I'm only a sophmore, but the novel's title caught my attention right away, as did the author's impressive background. And I'll go so far as to say that no one who reads this book will be disappointed.

The whole picture for new international students, 05 Oct 2006
I've recently bought a range of books aimed at international students in order to recommend the best during training programmes and this is a clear winner. The style is really straightforward, the excellent advice in each chapter is brought home by a summary of "risks to avoid" at the end and the reader is encouraged to stop and think at regular intervals about how they are going to apply the advice to their own situation. It covers the whole process from the initial investigations into studying for a postgraduate degree in the UK , through to the final thesis and viva and touches on career planning. There is also a lot of advice on the more nitty-gritty elements of moving to the UK which is written in a non-patronising but informative way. Congratulations to the authors - I'll be recommending this book to international research students without hesitation.

Great descriptions of the most competitive colleges, 17 Feb 1999
The scope of this guide is limited the 50+ 'best' colleges in the US. I was very happy with the college choices and the essays (written by recent graduates) were especially useful. I would recommend that most prospective students use this in conjunction with the Fiske Guide.
More information and stats about each college should exist., 16 Feb 1999
Excellent college guide limited to only the very best colleges and universities. However, for a book with less than 100 colleges listed, more stats and objective information (reviews are supplied by recent graduates of the college), as well as more flat out information should be included.

A mass of well-researched, well-analysed data and information that helps one make much better informed judgement on one of the most important decisions of one's life.

the woderful essays inspire you to write your own!!! comments from admission officers help a lot and show that one essay can be viewd very differently
Excellent compilation of essays, 15 Dec 1997
I read this book at my career counsellor's office. It was indeed a wonderful book, I tried to order it but I could'nt get it as the online ordering facility was not working. I also tried various book stores but could'nt find a copy of it.
comment about Levi Straus, 10 Jun 1999
I've only seen the comment about Levi's and it's completly wrong. Levi was unemployed and made the pants out of sail cloth. Dyed them so they would look more like suit pants. A miner saw them and thought the tough material would make them good mining pants (1849 49ers). The pockets were added to carry rock samples. The rivets were added because the weight of the rock samples kept tearing the pockets loose. I wouldn't buy a book when the first thing I read was wrong.
My whole family has used this book for years, 06 Feb 1999

Excellent, and informative, 24 Jun 1999
This book is a must have for anyone who is considering application to an Ivy League school. It's witty, informative, and at times, humorous. If you are a senior in high school, than you must read it before you even apply to any school.
This book changed my life, 21 Feb 1999
Haven't written reviews here before, but seeing with delight that this book is still around I had to write one. I read this book midway through my junior year of high-school and, struck by the sensible and sound reasoning that informs every argument, I applied to a completely different set of schools than I initially considered. Ultimately I feel I profited invaluably from attending a small liberal-arts college instead of a big brand name: I was going through a lot of troubles, and the individual attention and support I was able to obtain from small departments, small classes, and concerned and caring professors (even outside of my major) allowed me to find my inner strengths and embark on a life path I would not have dreamed of when I first arrived at college. Now how many of my friends who went to big-name research universities can say that? Thanks, Mr. Pope.
The key book for our student's college search--a gem., 18 Dec 1998
My son and I found this book to be sensible without being pedantic, and written in a pleasant, readible style. It was the key resource in his college search. Pope clearly favors small colleges and makes his case well. Because of Pope's recommendations, my son is now loving his experience in a small liberal arts school. We can only thank our lucky stars when we hear his friends tell stories of huge lecture hall classes and almost slum-like high rise dormitories at their big schools. Choose the trendy, big-name schools if you want, but please, not until you've read Pope's insights about small liberal arts schools. (And don't miss the reprinted news article he closes with.)
This book shattered my (erroneous) view of higher education., 04 Dec 1998
Loren Pope's intelligent writing not only makes the college selection process less daunting, but it forces one to evaluate and question his/her educational values. After years of poor performance and intellectual aloofness at two state mega-universities, I dropped out and took some time to get my bearings. During that period I read _Looking Beyond the Ivy League_ and now consider it to be one of my greatest literary influences. When it was my time to go back and finish college, I had the tools and criteria in place to make a knowledgeable decision. Though Pope never mentions my alma mater in his book and would probably even chide it as a "commuter" school, it nonetheless upholds the values in education that he and I hold so dear. Why only four stars then? Mr. Pope is slightly antagonistic towards computer technology and vocational knowledge - I personally find this unsound as well as elitist. A liberal education is excellence in itself, but it is even better when applied to practical matters and everyday problems. Bottom line: this book provides a better basis for decision than bumper stickers or college football rankings.
This book may turn your college search upside down., 02 Oct 1998
This book, and Loren Pope's other book "40 Colleges That Change Lives," were key factors in college selection for the seventh of our childen to attend college. Without Pope's wisdon she would probably be at a top-name university which is best suited for graduate students, and not the community of learning of a small liberal arts school. What's more, she was offered merit scholarships (not need-based) from 7 of the 8 schools on Pope's list of 40 to which she applied. (The so-called "top" universities give very few merit-based scholarships). She is in her second year at the College of Wooster, and I believe that she is happier and receiving a better college experience than she would have at Duke, where she was also accepted. The only drawbacks are that very few have heard of these excellent small liberal arts schools, and the nearly-universal "conventional wisdom" fails to recognize the important truths that Loren Pope's books explain. When our sixth child was ready to attend college, I suggested one of these schools for her to consider. Neither she nor her friends nor siblings had heard of it. Therefore she would not even consider it. Neither of the two of Pope's books mentioned above had yet been published. This book will give you new insights!

A bit of a waste of time really. The tips offered are rather obvious and not particularly insightful. Not much content. A cute book full of useful tips for the college fresman girl, 24 Jun 1999
This is a darling little book that makes a perfect gift for a little sister heading off to college for the first time..."from a big sister who's been there." Covering everything from frat boys to finances, classes to Cliff's Notes, this is a cute litle guide for the first big year of college. Very practical and funny!, 25 Feb 1999
My older sister sent this to me out of the generosity of her heart. I read all the way through it and I just love it. I took it to school and showed as many girls as I could, and they all enjoyed it too. It's really a must, and it makes a great gift. If I wasn't the youngest child, I'd get one for my younger sibling. This is the perfect gift for college bound young woman., 06 Mar 1998
With the graduation season approaching, this little treasure is the perfect send off for the graduate. 101 Things A College Girl Should Know is a reader friendly guide filled with useful and practical tips for the undergraduate. I look forward to future publications from this exciting and promising young author. What a great gift., 06 Aug 1997
I've been to nine graduation parties this spring and I've found the perfect gift: Stephabie Edwards's book. Now heading into fall, I'm considering sending it to those college-bound relatives and family friends who I didn't get to visit.
It's Life 101 for the college-bound. The college newbies' bible.
My only problem with the book is its frank truthfulness: it's great for women. Though it's a sound, smart read for men as well, I'm hoping Ms. Edwards can get to work on a similar title for glossy-eyed male college newcomers too -- God knows I certainly needed it.
