Aliens Love Underpants, 07 Aug 2008
Colourful, funny, vibrant - fantastic book for the under 5's
It's follow-up Dinosaurs love underpants is also great, my son loves choosing which pair of pants he's going to wear from the inside cover, a lot of imagination, thought and effort has gone into these books.
One to add for sure!
PANTS are always great!!, 11 Jul 2008
This book is great, I read it to my year 6 class and they hooted with laughter, who said picture books aren't good fro older kids.
We even then did some work on this in our book week.
Good stuff, it would even make a good adult toilet book!!
Good fun, 25 Jun 2008
My three year old son thinks this book is hilarious. Lots of chuckles and silliness with pants and aliens, all good topics for little boys.
brilliant!, 23 Jun 2008
My little boy is only 7 months and he loves it already. He coos and gurgles at the brightly coloured pictures and loves me reading the rhyming story to him. I'm sure it'll be a firm favourite for years to come.
Hilarious, 03 Jun 2008
Purchased this for class of 3-5 yr olds to link in with topic on Outer Space. The children love the title and laughed from the start. It's great to be able to introduce sometimes taboo subjects like "pants" to little ones in such a light hearted way. We had great discussions about which of the pants pictured they thought our staff members might be wearing. Their answers were hilarious. Weeks after we read it the children are still quoting from it and recalling what the aliens were doing!

My 2 year old daughter loves all of these books - very imaginative stories - great illustrations - pages contain lots of detail she really enjoys.
Top marks!, 07 Jul 2008
My daughter who is not yet two just loves this book, she finds it hard to put down and wants to read it over and over (luckily for us, Mummy and Daddy enjoy it too)
The only mistake I made though was buying the paperback version first (I didn't see the board one was available at the time) so if you are buying for smaller hands and fingers then I would suggest buying the board book first. I am going to and then put aside the paperback for when she is a bit older....as it is, this favorite isn't going to last very long in our home as my daughter would take it with her in the bath if she could!
Excellent storyline and illustrations. Top marks all round!!
Great Pre-school Reading, 06 Jul 2008
Absolutely fascinating book. My twin nieces have enjoyed this from the age of three, when it was first bought for them until now, at the ripe old age of 4 years.
They love the story, the illustrations and love telling Mum & Dad what is going to happen on the next page before it is turned over !!!
This book was well worth the cost and has been excellent in every way. Highly recommended for your toddler.
Buzz off thats MY witch !!!, 04 Jul 2008
Simply fantastic.
The rhyming scheme is fantastic and the characters likeable. Even tho the witch is 'ugly' and has a big wart on her nose, she is kind and helps people and ISN'T scary.
A very funny story, with great rhymes and moral messages but without being preachy- so they just absorb my osmosis that if you do good things for your friends and dont judge them on how they look, then they will do good things for you in return.
The highlight tho is my 3 year old and I booming out together "BUZZ OFF- THATS *MY* WITCH" at the dragon. Even funnier was when he reused it when his friend tried to take one of his cars !! Ha ha
Buy it, you wont regret it
"The witch had a cat and a very tall hat, and long ginger hair which she wore in a plait.", 23 Apr 2008
Its hard for me to review this book because I SO wanted to give it a 5 star rating. It has fun clear pictures and the rhyming story is easy to read and fun to tell. I really think it deserves top marks!
But my 3 year old son HATED it. He was scared of the dragon and scared of the witch! After our first reading he said to me "Mummy, I don't like that book"!
However, I do think there are a lot of children out there who WILL like it. In fact, I have purchased a copy for a friend's daughter who I know for a fact loves stories about witches.
Therefore I am giving this book 4 stars, because I like it, some children will like it, its just that my own son didn't.

My 8 year old daughter has had this book for many years along with Room on the Broom, Monkey Puzzle, Gruffalo etc. and I have to say that all of the books are brilliant (even a cynical 41 year old like me enjoys reading them repeatedly....to her of course). They are all cleverly written (in a rhyming style) and beautifully illustrated (with some repeat themes / characters popping up in various books - look out for them). I would strongly recommend buying this or Room on the Broom as an introduction to the world of Donaldson / Scheffler.
another crowd pleaser, 27 Jul 2008
Another crowd pleaser from the author and illustrator of The Gruffalo and Room on a Broom. My kids love these books. They don't ever get tired of hearing them, which is why this gets four stars. It doesn't get five because I don't like it at all. If you're looking for funny rhyming books with great illustrations I highly recommend the work of Lynley Dodd whose prolific output includes Hairy Maclary from Donaldson's Dairy and Slinky Malinky.
What I find most annoying about reading this book out loud is the fact that the words are squeezed to fit the fact that this is a rhyming story. The sentences just don't work, and yet the rhyme is so appealing for children that it is both memorable and immensely popular. The illustrations are good and there is lots of detail to talk about which keeps them amused and very engaged with the story.
So, great for kids, not for me.
This is a tale of a tiny snail..., 21 Jul 2008
I don't normally write reviews (laziness really!) but for this book I make an exception. My 16 month old LOVES this book. I thought he'd be a bit young for the lengthy story, but not at all, he can't get enough of it!! 4 times in a 2hour period yesterday!! Maybe that's a bad thing!? Illustrations are beautiful & the story is simple yet wonderful... it's probably my favourite book too!
Lovely story with great pictures and rhymes, 21 Jun 2008
This was an instant hit with my toddler, who was entranced by the rhymes and learned the word snail within a single read. I found myself quite moved when reading it too, especially when the snail feels small in the big beautiful world.
wallydos, 12 Jun 2008
My 2 year old son adores The Snail and the Whale as well as the Room on the Broom. We read them nearly every night. They are also fun to read as an adult compared to many other children's books that drive you potty after the 10th time!

For wannabe pirates whether boys or girls, 24 Jul 2008
Favourite quote of the book: 'Give me my treasure back or I'll tell my mum'
This book is a firm favourite with my 5yo son - he loves the rhythm and the pace and most of all he loves the little girl pirates for NOT saying 'certainly not, you're only a boy'. I have bought lots of copies for little girls as an antidote to stories of soppy princesses, and had to make a complete Captain Patch costume for my son for World Book Day!
bedtime story night after night, 19 Jul 2008
We bought this along with 'pirate things to make and do' and again this was a great purchase. My 6 year old son chose this for his bedtime story night after night after night. He enjoyed reciting the first page or two himself. He loved the repetition and also the typography. This book has spurred my son on into wanting to read and the different typography has been helpful in recognising the word phrases.
absolutely captivating, 03 Jan 2008
This is one of my and my 4 year old son's favourite books. It tells the fantastic story of Tom and a team of girl pirates who steal the front of Tom's house and use it to disguise their ship so they can steal treasure from Captain Patch and his grown up pirates.
What sets this book apart is the wonderful illustrations and the text which not only has a gentle rhyme and repetition but flows across the page using different fonts and layouts to help tell the story. for instance when the pirates run away, so do the letters.....
This book will be treasured by any boy or girl and it is particularly refreshing to find a story about girls who are not pink princessese. Buy this book - you will not be disappointed!
the night pirates, 30 Dec 2007
I love the illustrations in this book and the story seems to start off well but i thought that the middle of the story was lacking a little.
Where was the big adventure? They said what it was but i feel they could have taken us into the adventure in just a little bit more detail.
Im afraid to say i was a bit disapointed in the book by itself although the book along with the cd is much better.
Night Pirates, 27 Oct 2007
An excellent book which has been read and read. The way the book is written is easy to read and understand. The pictures are also excellent. I would recommend this to boys and girls who have an interest in pirates. Happy reading.

An excellent book which has been read and read. The way the book is written is easy to read and understand. The pictures are also excellent. I would recommend this to boys and girls who have an interest in pirates. Happy reading.

The Smartest Giant in Town
My 3 year old son loves this story, he will request it again and again and it always holds his attention and he will listen intently. I have noticed he will attempt to read the story to himself assisted by the colourful images.
For those who liked the Gruffalo this is another fantastic childrens story by Julia Donaldson and is well worth having in your child's collection; From an adult prespective its also enjoyable to read.
Striking narrative and illustrations., 26 May 2008
Zany story and zany, funny ills combine to make a really good package for young children at storytime. The ills combine a striking ability to make a simple statement while being quite detailed. The verses and letter that make part of the narative add variety.
Excellent!
Seaside Mummy, 15 Apr 2008
My 3 year old daughter absoultely loves this book. The rhymes are great fun to read. Im normally asked to read this book at least twice a night.
Great Book, 31 Jan 2008

PANTS!!, 14 Apr 2007
My 19 month old daughter loves this book - particularly the page where the giants trousers fall down to reveal his pants! She picks this up again & again & is clearly delighted when we pick this to read.

Brilliant, 30 Jul 2008
A must for any childs collection., 20 Sep 2008

Another Triumph from Julia Donaldson , 15 Jun 2008
What a fantastic read and great for all ages - although the Gruffalo is still the frim favourite in our house this book gives it a real run for its money..... highly recommend this for all 1-7 year olds. Also as an adult that enjoys doing the voices (badly!) its easy to read this book aloud again and again without getting tired of it.
Julia and Alex are a great team - brilliant story and brilliant pics.
The goat chewed the curtains and trod on the egg, then sat down to nibble a table leg!, 21 Apr 2008
I bought this for my son who is about to turn three and it has become a firm favourite. The fun rhyming text makes him laugh out loud, particularly "The goat chewed the curtains and trod on the egg, then sat down to nibble a table leg" and the bit where the cow does a jig on the table. The pictures are equally entertaining and my son will happily sit and study the book on his own and chat about what is going on in the nice clear pictures. There is nothing crude or scary about this book. It is simply a fun tale that teaches the child to appreciate what he or she has. My son loves this book, and if your child appreciates animals doing mad things, then yours will too.
Excellent and educational - for now and later, 03 Feb 2008
A Squash and a Squeeze is a great book, with a deeper meaning than most small-childrens' books. It's a good enough, simple story with rhyming verses and nice illustrations, that lilts along at just the right pace for my 16-month-old daughter to choose it again and again from her shelf of bedtime books.
But it also has a deeper, more philosophical message for her to pick up later. And that message is essentially 'be thankful for what you've got, because your life could be a lot worse'. This, of course, is not an easy message for small children to grasp, but one which I think most parents would be happy for them to understand at some later point in their childhood.
All in all, it's a cheerful, colourful and educational book with messages on different levels for children from toddler age to young school age, I'd suggest.
Lovely, 02 Feb 2008
The story itself is based on a Jewish folktale.
An old lady is complaining her house is too small, so asks the wiseman for help. Instead of tellling her to build an extension, he gives some interesting and unique advice!
By the end of the story, the old lady is delighted with her house and the space she has.
Wonderfully illustrated and with witty engaging rhyme.
Highly recommended as a bedtime/anytime reader. Just the right length to keep a youngster's attention with enough change and variation to keep interest.

A Wonderful Re-discovery, 25 Sep 2008
I recently bought this for my daughter after spotting it in Marks and Spencers. I earned a few strange looks with my mini squeal of delight, but nevermind! I had completely forgotton about this book until seeing it again, and the memories flooded back as I read the story to my daugher. The simple story will delight any child, but for me, the drawings made the book. A must!!
Delight to my grandchildren, 25 Sep 2008
I have read this book to my 3 grandchildren time and again and still they are not tired of it - aged 5yrs and 2yrs - the 5year old having heard it since he was 2yrs 'pretends' not to be listening as his brother and cousin have it read to them but he's definitely paying attention!!
The ridiculousness (if that is a word) of the story is lovable and causes many smiles and OH'S - for some reason the scene of mess left behind always brings an Ooh and Ahh as Mummy has to clean up. The favourite picture is tiger pouring the tea down him from the pot!
a great tradition yet quirky book, 07 Jul 2008
my two sons aged 3 and a half and aged 15 months both sit in awe of this book! there is a traditional feel with the mummy making this fantasic tea which she is happy to share with this stranger at the door - a tiger! then there is the crazy element that you would let a tiger into your house - the tiger never roars at all and amazingly my very vocal boys never roar when they see him in this book as he is a friendly tiger.
this book is simply great, a must have for parents and children.
Classic title, 26 May 2008
My little daughter loved this at bedtime. The moral - that which appears on the outside to be frightening and threatening need not be so upon examination - is such an important one for children to appreciate; an antidote to the prevailing scare culture where middle-class children are increasingly driven everywhere in a vehicle and kept from playing out on the street and taught to shun strangers.
A gentle, warm story with ditto illustrations. Magic!
BRILL BOOK, 01 May 2008
One day, there was a knock at the door of Sophie's house, just as she and her mummy were going to have tea, but the milkman had already come and it was not the day for the boy from the grocer; it could not be daddy because he was coming home a little bit later and he had his keys. Who was the mysterious being at the door? Find out in this book...
This book is wonderful: the illustrations are vivid and bright; the vocabulary range is good for children aged from 4 - 7 and the story line is delightful. It is a truly superb book.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book with my brother (who enjoyed it as well) and would rate it, for myself and on behalf of my brother, 10/ 10.

Product Description
The Final Chapter Harry has been burdened with a dark, dangerous and seemingly impossible task: that of locating and destroying Voldemort's remaining Horcruxes. Hardcover Paperback | Why We Love Harry Favourite Moments from the SeriesThere are plenty of reasons to love Rowling's wildly popular series--no doubt you have several dozen of your own. Our list features favourite moments, characters, and artefacts from the first six books. Keep in mind that this list is by no means exhaustive (what we love about Harry could fill ten books!) and does not include any of the spectacular revelatory moments that would spoil the books for those (few) who have not read them. Enjoy. Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone | * Harry's first trip to the zoo with the Dursleys, when a boa constrictor winks at him. * When the Dursleys' house is suddenly besieged by letters for Harry from Hogwarts. Readers learn how much the Dursleys have been keeping from Harry. Rowling does a wonderful job in displaying the lengths to which Uncle Vernon will go to deny that magic exists. * Harry's first visit to Diagon Alley with Hagrid. Full of curiosities and rich with magic and marvel, Harry's first trip includes a trip to Gringotts and Ollivanders, where Harry gets his wand (holly and phoenix feather) and discovers yet another connection to He-Who-Must-No-Be-Named. This moment is the reader's first full introduction to Rowling's world of witchcraft and wizards. * Harry's experience with the Sorting Hat. | Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets | * The de-gnoming of the Weasleys' garden. Harry discovers that even wizards have chores--gnomes must be grabbed (ignoring angry protests "Gerroff me! Gerroff me!"), swung about (to make them too dizzy to come back), and tossed out of the garden--this delightful scene highlights Rowling's clever and witty genius. * Harry's first experience with a Howler, sent to Ron by his mother. * The Duelling Club battle between Harry and Malfoy. Gilderoy Lockhart starts the Duelling Club to help students practice spells on each other, but he is not prepared for the intensity of the animosity between Harry and Draco. Since they are still young, their minibattle is innocent enough, including tickling and dancing charms. | Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban | * Ron's attempt to use a telephone to call Harry at the Dursleys'. * Harry's first encounter with a Dementor on the train (and just about any other encounter with Dementors). Harry's brush with the Dementors is terrifying and prepares Potter fans for a darker, scarier book. * Harry, Ron, and Hermione's behaviour in Professor Trelawney's Divination class. Some of the best moments in Rowling's books occur when she reminds us that the wizards-in-training at Hogwarts are, after all, just children. Clearly, even at a school of witchcraft and wizardry, classes can be boring and seem pointless to children. * The Boggart lesson in Professor Lupin's classroom. * Harry, Ron, and Hermione's knock-down confrontation with Snape. | Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire | * Hermione's disgust at the reception for the veela (Bulgarian National Team Mascots) at the Quidditch World Cup. Rowling's fourth book addresses issues about growing up--the dynamic between the boys and girls at Hogwarts starts to change. Nowhere is this more plain than the hilarious scene in which magical cheerleaders nearly convince Harry and Ron to jump from the stands to impress them. * Viktor Krum's crush on Hermione--and Ron's objection to it. * Malfoy's "Potter Stinks" badge. * Hermione's creation of S.P.E.W., the intolerant bigotry of the Death Eaters, and the danger of the Triwizard Tournament. Add in the changing dynamics between girls and boys at Hogwarts, and suddenly Rowling's fourth book has a weight and seriousness not as present in early books in the series. Candy and tickle spells are left behind as the students tackle darker, more serious issues and take on larger responsibilities, including the knowledge of illegal curses. | Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix | * Harry's outburst to his friends at No. 12 Grimmauld Place. A combination of frustration over being kept in the dark and fear that he will be expelled fuels much of Harry's anger, and it all comes out at once, directly aimed at Ron and Hermione. Rowling perfectly portrays Harry's frustration at being too old to shirk responsibility, but too young to be accepted as part of the fight that he knows is coming. * Harry's detention with Professor Umbridge. Rowling shows her darker side, leading readers to believe that Hogwarts is no longer a safe haven for young wizards. Dolores represents a bureaucratic tyrant capable of real evil, and Harry is forced to endure their private battle of wills alone. * Harry and Cho's painfully awkward interactions. Rowling clearly remembers what it was like to be a teenager. * Harry's Occlumency lessons with Snape. * Dumbledore's confession to Harry. | Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince | * This book is much darker than the rest. Lord Voldemort has been creating chaos in the Wizard and Muggle communities alike, the war is in full swing and the Wizarding community now lives in fear. * It is much more emotional. The story turns at the whim of a temperamental teenager from war and life-changing tragedy, to euphoria and glistening happiness. | Magic, Mystery, and Mayhem: A Conversation with J.K. Rowling

Brilliant, 30 Jul 2008
A must for any childs collection., 20 Sep 2008
The Smartest Giant In Town, 07 Aug 2008
We bought this book on recommendation from the other reviews, and it was spot on for our 3 year old! We love it so much that we are getting the others in the series.
PANTS!!, 14 Apr 2007
My 19 month old daughter loves this book - particularly the page where the giants trousers fall down to reveal his pants! She picks this up again & again & is clearly delighted when we pick this to read.
Brilliant, 30 Jul 2008
My 2 year old daughter loves all of these books - very imaginative stories - great illustrations - pages contain lots of detail she really enjoys.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book with my brother (who enjoyed it as well) and wo | | |
