Wonderful, 27 Nov 2008
We bought this as a Christmas present for our little boy, and have unpacked it and switched it on tonight to check it. We have bought many things from Amazon over the years, and good though everything has been, this is the first time we have felt inclined to leave feedback.
Fantastic! Just an absolute delight. Larger and more detailed than we expected, beautiful to look at, especially when switched on and the sea life becomes visible (haven't worked out how it does that, but am resisting the temptation of taking it apart to find out), robust, well made and with plenty for a small child to find interest in. Not a toy as it states, but certainly well enough made to stand up to the attentions of a younger child.
The accompanying book reproduces the (numbered) illustrations from the globe and has short sections of text giving common name, scientific name and background information for each of the animals shown. This is a useful 'add on' although probably only of interest to older children. The globe itself will be the point of fascination for our little one, although maybe reading about one or two animals each night will become a bedtime routine.
Wish I'd had one of these as a kid, maybe I need to order another one for my office (seriously it is attractive enough to use for ambient lighting pretty much anywhere).
Exceeded expectations in every respect. An absolute bargain, (and would have been even if it wasn't reduced).
Great globe, 29 Oct 2008
This globe arrived quickly and was extremely well packed. I tried it to check it worked and looked at the book and it is absolutely super. So many details on the globe - I could have spent hours looking at it! I am sure my grandson will love it. Great service!!!!
Fantastic!, 04 Feb 2008
I bought this for my 5 year old son. He loves it!! When it's illuminated the sea life becomes visible in the sea. It's got a really soft glow so great for a night light. The only thing is the animals are more visible than some of the countries but it's not really an issue for something that is fun and educational.

My son really enjoyed this book. It captured his imagination and we have had lots of interesting chats about different countries and cultures around the world. Excellent for participation and goes really well with associated books on flags and geography.

Fabulous childrens book, 12 Mar 2008
I ordered this for my 6 year old son ready for his show and share afternoon at school, not sure if it would be suitable for his age. He loved the book immediately and was able to read and understand the text confidently. What really caught his imagination were the maps in the back, of the continents and countries, and the animals, landmarks, etc... that could be found around the world. I am sure we are going to have hours of fun learning about the world - think mummy will learn a thing or two as well!!
Xmas prezzie, 20 Jan 2008
Bought this for my sons xmas but was disappointed when it arrived so gave to one of his pals for his b'day.
Don't get me wrong it's a lovely book - but like many 3-4 yrs boys my son likes to see real pictures in books. These are all drawings - albeit good ones.
Great book., 28 Dec 2007
I thought this might be too much for my boy who is nearly 4. However, the pictures are fantastic and each page has a lot to look at.
He is just as happy to flick through the book on his own looking at the pictures of each country with its climate, animals, landmarks and people as he is going through it with us.
I know he's learning from the book but he's also enjoying it.
Grandma's delight, 07 Jun 2007
I live in France and bought this book for my six year old grandson who loves The Continents and wildlife of any description. The book stays with us here in France for the twice yearly visits by the grandchildren. My Grandson's first reaction was "thank you Grandma for buying this book, I love it", what better accolade could it have? His four year old sister enjoys it too and together they explore the world and their imaginations run riot. They have learned so much from it; it has enriched their knowledge of the world I am now going to buy it for his primary school in Kent because I think it has so much to offer primary schoolchildren.
Usborne Children Picture Atlas, 18 Feb 2006
An usborne children's book is always a safe bet but I was particularly impressed with this one. I have several copies in my primary two classroom (~age 6). The children all love looking at the fantastic illustrations. It is easy to use and gives a clear explaination of the keys commonly used in atlases. It is perfect for young children but is not patronising in it's writing style.

Not good for size of countries, 03 Apr 2008
This map is the Mercator one which almost everyone sees and is good for navigation but is totally incorrect for showing the size of countries and continents. It shows Greenland to be about the same size of Africa when in fact, Africa is 13 times larger.
Everyone should look up Peters Projection on the web to realise this.
Excellent bright and colourful and not too cluttered., 30 Jul 2001
This is a great first map for a young child. The detail is limited to countries and capital cities so its not cluttered up with tiny print. Brightly coloured and laminated for protection against sticky fingers it should help make basic geography fun.

Map we should all use, 31 Jul 2008
I am a teacher who strongly believes that the Mercator projection should NOT be used in schools. The proportions are wrong which leads to many misconceptions and Mercator shows 'wealthier' countries as being larger.
Whilst the Peters projection still isn't perfect, I use it in my classroom and I have found that my students have a clearer understanding of the world in map form once they compare the Mercator and Peters projections.
Oxfam have an online activity 'Maping Our World' which shows the benefits of using Peters Projection Maps.
I will be using this projection to teach my daughter about the world.
Brilliant Peters Projection, 03 Apr 2008
It is about time everyone should be using the Peters Projection as it shows the size of land so much more accurately than the useless Mercator Map.
Almost everyone uses the Mercator including schools, so children think Greenland is bigger than China, and that the USA and Canada are bigger than Africa.
Well done to use the Peters Projection Map even showing the incorrect sizes of the Mercator.

Excellant, 08 Jul 2002
A very good school atlas, clearly written and easy to understand, with excellant keys and good scale maps. A very good "all rounder"
Also useful in teaching English as a foreign language., 15 Sep 2000
Concise and reliable, easy to use. We have been using this atlas in our bilingual geography classes in Germany for some time now.
