Wonderful!, 13 Dec 2005
I haven't played any musical instruments since I took flute and piano lessons in school. I had forgotten everything about playing an instrument and hadn't a clue how to read music. So I decided to go back to the very beginning and learn how to play the humble school recorder again. This book is amazing. In less than two days it had me reading simple music and playing simple tunes. Everything is explained simply and clearly and has exercises to help you remember what you have learned. I recommend this to anyone wanting to rekindle theri passion for music ... you'll be playing in no time. It's also simple enough for very young children.
my review of " The usbourne 1st book of the recorder.", 11 Dec 2000
I think this book is brilliant for children of all ages and as a teenager, have now been learning the recorder for 7 years. this book really helped me teach myself, i can now also read music which i would have never bothered to have learnt. I still play my recorder now and am just starting "The usbourne book of 200 easy recorder tunes. i gave up in year 6 as all my friends were loosing intrest now in year 9 i have begun again and this book has helped me out with the basics again. The book has brilliant cartoons which make it easy to understand whilst making it fun and jokey. It has large print so it is easy to read. i suggest this book for children age 4 upwards. this book and a recorder may not seem a good christmas present at the time but most kids will play one so one day s/he will want to play it.

Excellent for Adults & Kids, 18 Nov 2008
I want to learn piano myself and so does my 8 year old so I bought a few books, but this has been the best by a long shot, even for my old age group. I did music in school, never piano though, and after two weeks I'm playing the likes of Strangers in the Night and Annie's Song - very slowly though, so I'm no genius.
Anyway, the book is engaging, facts are so well presented and absorbed easily, I don't know whether its the pictures of the little monsters or what, but it works. I have a full understanding of the notes, chords, how to read the music and how to use piano fingering. I do about an hour messing around each night and am improving daily. I initially read the book in bed and felt I had some knowledge but when I sat at the piano, it all just happened. I've read the book a few times now because it's short and sweet, my daughter loves it as well.
Basically if you buy this book you will get your value for money, you'll refer to for years and you could nearly teach your dog to play! Enjoy!!
My son's verdict on this book, 01 Apr 2005
I am twelve years old. When I got a keyboard, I wanted to learn how to play it. So I got this book and followed it page by page until I had finished it. Now I can play a lot of music. I don't think you will find a book much better than this one for learning how to play the piano or any keyboard instrument.
The Child Within, 10 Aug 2003
Since I consider my self tone-deaf any book that can actually remedy this to some effect is a welcome addition to my book shelves. The truth is I bought this book not for my self but for my seven year old daughter who had earlier during the year started attending piano lessons. The book is very cleverly illustrated both so as to capture and maintain the attention of a child as well as to make learning how to play the piano as easy as possible. I consider my daughter the best critic of how useful this book remains for her even though my daughter’s piano teacher was also quite impressed by its contents. If you have a child who has just started learning how to play the piano or if the child within you wants to have another go at learning how to read music and also play such a magnificent instrument then this book is highly recommended both for its simplicity and effectiveness.
A fun and effective book for begginers...., 30 Jun 2000
The book is great for first time piano players as it explains how to play and read piano music in an effective, easy to understand cartoon format. Each new topic eg.the different keys and concepts are introduced in a gradual sequence so you never get mixed up or overwhelmed. Especially useful to the "teach yourself learner" as the CD demonstrates how the music piece should sound like (ie.the tone and speed) giving the student/pianist the reassurance required as well as an opportunity to play along with the CD.May not be ideal for those who wish to learn the more classical and operatic piano styles, but a good book to start with nevertheless.

While working my way through this book, I found it very easy to use, it showed me exactly what I needed to do and it was very easy to follow. This book showed me the basics of using a guitar and it has made me feel more confident. I have not put this book down since I have recieved it and it definatly does help, so if you wanna learn, it is'nt too late like I thought it might be. Buy it and you'll be suprised!

A great book!, 20 Jul 2008
This is a fantastic book for anyone who is learning to play guitar. It covers different aspects of guitar into one brilliant lesson by lesson format. It is full of wonderful illustrations to keep the reader interested and a book anyone must have if learning, as it covers both chords and notes from scratch. I found it easy to use and understand as well as a pleasure to read. A must for all young guitarists!
Perfect starter book for young beginners, 15 Jun 2008
I've used this book a number of times with young beginners. The system and style of the book is correctly designed to provide beginners the correct amount of technique and material to keep them enagaged during the first year or so of learning. Book 2 develops the guitar technique and increases the range whilst still focussing on the notes within the first 4 frets. Chords and learning to read notation are both covered.

Seriously good, 19 Sep 2007
I agree with the first reviewer having learnt the recorder at a similar time. Other books have fancy graphics and side comments which are essentially distracting as my kids ended up just flicking through the books instead of learning to read and play music. With this book as soon as it came in my daughter (11 yrs) tried it and the next day had finished the book and was able to read and play competently from other music books. Now she has even learnt them off by heart. I'm looking for the other "oldie" books now.
OLDIE BUT GOODIE!, 07 May 2006
I think this book must be as old as I am - I used it as a kid in the 1960s. I have recently started teaching recorder to children and adults, and having looked at alternatives, have come back to this book as my main resource. It explains thoroughly but clearly as much as the student needs to know, without any gimmicks which have to be unlearned later. Once you have worked through this book you have a repertoire of English folk tunes, hymn tunes and light classics, when you thought you were actually just learning an instrument! Perhaps the format looks a bit 1950s, but do persevere with it, it does a thorough job! Book 2 is equally good, but a bit more rare.

It really does help, a lot!, 04 Dec 2000
It got here in good condition but cd was missing!, 29 Nov 2007
Got here but is supposed to have a cd with it, mine has none so please check if it is going to be for a christmas present, the book advises you to use the cd, i have contacted Amazon and am awaiting a reply!!! Therfore i can only rate 1 star because my order is not yet complete.
NOT FOR CHILDREN!!!!, 27 Oct 2005
I bought this book for my Niece but when it arrived it had NO explanation of Cords and none of the songs have the cords shown, you would HAVE to be able to read music to use this book!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

EXCELLENT BUY!!!, 01 Jan 2007
I bought this book because of the great reviews. It seemed to be just what I was looking for ( and it was). BUT I also purchased the CD to accompany the book, which helps you to know that when you play the flute it actually is sounding as it should be! Together they make learning to play the flute very easy and very enjoyable. I don't worry that I'm not learning correctly because I have the book and CD to refer to. I can take it up in my own time, when I feel like it, without paying £25 per hour for a tutor. Very happy!!!!
Well presented, easy to follow., 01 Feb 2001
In my opinion, this is a very good buy for those who are looking to learn the flute, for both young and old, with or without additional instruction, although, I would recommend it, for technique purposes and additional support, especially for young learners. It takes you through the basics of finger positioning, how to support the flute and proper lip postioning, with good pictoral diagrams. Also included is a good basic explanation of music theory, which progresses with each unit, good excercises, basic scales and 'concert pieces', along with several duets to be played with a teacher or someone more advanced in playing the flute. More importantly, it does not progress too quickly. There are also very good hints and tips on each unit on both playing and reading music, and a basic finger chart is also included as a handy quick reference.

the best disney song book around, 04 Jul 2003
This book has every Disney song you can think of, from the award-winning ('Can You Feel the Love Tonight', 'Beauty & the Beast') to the moving and heartfelt ('Baby Mine', 'Reflection' 'If I Never Knew You') to the just plain brilliant ('Hakuna Matata', 'The Bare Necessities', 'Heigh-Ho'). It has some I've never even heard of, but it has pretty much something for everybody. Think of your fave Disney film and you'll most likey find a song from it in here. The best ones are the songs from 'Beauty & the Beast', 'The Lion King', 'Aladdin', 'Snow White' and 'The Little Mermaid'. The pages are all shiny and have full-colour pictures to go with each song. If you love music, you will love this book! The only complaint I would have is that it doesn't have any songs from 'Tarzan', so there's no 'You'll Be in My Heart'. And some of the piano arrangements are simplified or transposed. But, overall I give this book five stars!
Fantastic from 6 to 16, 19 Sep 2001
This book provides an excellent repertoire basis for the experienced and non-experienced teacher. As all the musical numbers are easily recognisable, the students do not have any problem, recognising, learning and liking the music. There is something for all the generations, from the very young 6 year olds to the 16 years adolescents (and to my surprise they really enjoyed the compilation!) On a minor but very important note, the piano parts are easily played thus giving the singing teacher a bit more time to concentrate on his/her students rather than playing the accompaniment.
