nice quite a young read really, 13 Oct 2008
I bought this for my 14 year old niece, who LOVES Top Gear, and I'm a bit disappointed. The book's very colourful, but it's full of word searches and `mazes', so really is far too young for anyone over the age of 8 or 9. I've just seen the Big Book of Top Gear, which is really funny, and I'm going to get that for her instead.
A Must Have For Young Fans Of The Show, 10 Oct 2008
This book is fantastic! My son watches Top Gear with me all the time and when he saw the book advertised on amazon, he begged me to buy it for him and he certainly wasn't disappointed. It is packed with information and fun things to do. It will keep him amused for hours. There aren't really any books for children with an interest in cars, so this was a great buy and fantastic value

A great gift for any Dr Who fan!, 02 Oct 2008
My son aged 10 is heavily into Dr Who and was dying to get this annual. He was impressed by this new one and found it both interesting and entertaining. Although a cheap gift he rated it above some of the PS2 games he was given!!! Would recommend this annual for any Dr Who fan.
If you like Doctor Who, you'll like this annual, 21 Aug 2008
Once again, the BBC have put together an excellent Doctor Who annual for all television fans of the programme, young and old. Gracing the front cover is the Doctor and the Red Dalek Supreme and Davros on the back cover, all on a silver foil backing which makes the annual 'stand out' amongst the rest!
Readers of BBC's Doctor Who Adventures comic will instantly recognise the format inside the annual. Every page is covered with facts and features on Series Four and readers are re-introduced to Donna, Martha, Sarah Jane, Rose and Jenny, as well as the Ood, Adipose, Master, Hath, Sontarans and, of course, Davros and his Daleks. With a mix of text story, comic strips and puzzles, this annual is a worthy accompaniment to the Doctor Who StorybookDoctor Who Storybook 2009 (Dr Who).

Rupert in decline, 27 Sep 2008
This is a sad day for Rupert, Stuart Trotter's drawings are just not good enough after John Harrold's beautiful and detailed artwork. Harrold was a worthy successor to Tourtel and Bestall. I hope a new artist can be found to rescue Rupert, or bring back John Harrold.
In the meantime if you want to buy a great Rupert Annual for this Christmas get the 1963 facsimile produced this year and see just how enchanting a real Rupert Annual can be.
2 stars because it's Rupert, 26 Sep 2008
Very dissapointed with the contents and art work. Stories are no where near as enjoyable.
I have bought a Rupert annual for 50+ years and have never been dissapointed until now
Can we have the old clear Rupert and the gang back.
A sad day for Rupert fans, 12 Sep 2008
I can only agree with the previous reviewers, particularly Mark Manders pithy and perceptive assessment. I'm not sure just in what way Stuart Trotter feels he is basing his work on Bestall. His jumper is still red and his trousers yellow I suppose. Many of the frames by Bestall and John Harrold were not only pieces of artwork in themselves but were able to create that special atmosphere that characterised Rupert's world. Stuart Trotter's work by contrast is poorly drawn - Rupert's eyes often appear on the same side of his head for heaven's sake - and bland, bland, bland! One recalls the efforts of the artists who vainly tried to follow Bestall before John Harrold took over, but even they were better than this effort. To add insult to injury, Egmont have also reduced the annual from its traditional 118 pages to just 64. A sad day indeed for lovers of Rupert.
What Have they Done..???, 11 Sep 2008
Very disappointed with this years book (2008)..have been a Rupert Bear Annual collector since 1950. The drawings in this years book are huge, babyish, agree with other reviews on here! The contents have been cut by 1/3..and only THREE stories, it is awful. I always look forward to a Christmas story, ok, know there isn't one every year, but that was part of the fun of getting the new annual, at least there were a few to chose from, but THREE!!!!!..awful!..awful!...awful! Hope it improves next year, they need to bring in a different artist and story writer, as can't see many buying this sort of rubbish for long.
Barely Rupert, 19 Aug 2008
Rupert Bear Annual 2009
New Rupert artist Stuart Trotter announced that he is a fan of Alfred Bestall and would be basing his Rupert work on Bestall's style. Fair enough, he didn't like John Harrold's work- he said the crisp, well thought out and engaging linework was "clinical" - each to their own.
What Trotter clearly meant was that trying to emulate John's immaculate style was beyond him, and that he could hide his shortcomings behind a loosely Bestallian style. No, scratch that- he meant that he could badly trace and copy Bestall, draw graceless and often unrecognisable figures and use the copy and paste function of a basic computer package to cut corners and save costs- to the detrement of quality.
Yes, what has been a cornerstone of quality British children's publishing- a fine example to the world of how it should be done- has in one fell swoop become a very pale, low grade imitation of former glories. To compare Trotter's work to Bestall is to insult the late artist's illustrative genius and deceptively simple style. To follow John Harrold- still a successfully working artist- with this bland and charmless effort just adds insult to injury.
I pray that Trotter will be the George Lazenby of Rupert artists- a one-off aberration. Let the campaign to reinstate John Harrold begin here!!

Surprise and delight, 09 Sep 2008
As well as lots of nice old strips to satisfy the nostalgia freaks and comic historians - not to mention those who like a good laugh - this has the pleasant surprise of scans of original artwork showing how the artists finished their work in the days before computers. Brilliant!

Another lovely reprint of a classic Bestall Rupert Annual. Last year's facsimile was the 1959 annual, why the huge gap? I was not expecting a reprint of the 1960 annual, but there is nothing to offend in the 1961 or 1962 books (one annual contains a story with a jolly Chinese pilot and the other a mysterious stranger wearing a fez!) Come on, Egmont, don't you think you are being a wee bit timid, bring out facsimiles of the 1961 and 1962 annuals, there is nothing wrong with them.
see what Egmont CAN do with a little effort?, 27 Aug 2008
fantastice stories, expert draughtmanship, brilliantly executed art work to draw the reader into magical Nutwood! just the thing for a collecter of fine books such as this one, its just a shame this years newest annual isnt this good, or the one before it!

Fantastic first Young Bond graphic novel, 07 Oct 2008
Like the Young Bond series itself, the first Young Bond Graphic Novel adaption is cut above all others in its class. Kev Walker's artwork and layouts are just fantastic, and I'm happy to see that, while they've obviously had to condense the book, nothing major has been omitted (aside from the to-hot-for-the-US-publisher wrestling match between Bond and Wilder). I didn't think the trip to the circus would make this version, but it's there!
I also really enjoyed the new visual winks added by Walker -- like Bond wearing #007 on his chest during the foot race. Maybe that would have been too much for the book, but it works here, and I especially love how it's revealed.
Now, am I crazy, or has Walker revised his image of Young Bond to look a little more like a young Daniel Craig than a young Pierce Brosnan? Hey, it's fine by me!
I really hope this book does well and they continue on with the series. The Young Bond books, IMO, just got better and better as they went along, and it would be wonderful to see Blood Fever, Double or Die, Hurricane Gold, and By Royal Command adapted into graphic novels of this quality.
