"Each Peach Pear Plum. I spy Tom Thumb!" In this engaging, interactive book for the very young, familiar nursery-rhyme characters such as Mother Hubbard and Baby Bunting sneak their way into the gentle drawings. Even young children who might not know all the fairy-tale stars can find them lurking in the cupboard, on the stairs or deep in the woods. In the happy finale, the whole cast meets up for plum pie in the sun, where the little one on your lap will gleefully find everyone.

My son has just turned 2 and this book has been a favourite for a few months. He enjoys looking for the 'hidden' characters and the reference to nursery rhyme characters etc.
A classic, 28 Oct 2008
Both me and me toddler adore this book. Lovely pictures that provide excellent hide and seek involvement for toddlers, and sing song narrative that will engage and delight babies and toddlers alike. Peepo is also a gem - the Ahlbergs are genius!
Lovely and gentle, 03 Aug 2008
Such a lovely board book and in my opinion it's perfect for babies and toddlers of any age really.
It's especially good for reading before a daytime nap (or any winding down time) as the beautiful rhymes and gentle illustrations can be quite soothing.
My 2 year old daughter loves it and I highly recommend it.
Buy it and you'll soon see...it will come out from the bookshelf time and time again.

As all the other reviews say, this is an out and out classic children's book - a must have.
This copy, however, is dreadful. The paper is thin and overly glossy, making it difficult to get to the next page and it could do with being bigger as it's really all about the pictures. I bought where the wild things are at the same time and that is amazingly presented, highlighting the problem with this further. This seems like a pamphlet or concert programme - cheap.
Save money and get the board book. It's smaller but the pictures are sharper.
Charming, 14 Sep 2007
What a perfectly charming book. Children love the bouncy rhyme and they recognise many famous characters such as tom thumb and cinderella. Statistics show that if a child is not interested in a reading by the time they are 7 they never will be. This is a brilliant introduction to literature!

What a jolly good read!, 14 Jul 2007
I thought that the Jolly Postman couldn't be beaten, but this wins hands down. Absolutely brilliant read, great rhymes, 'interactive' in the sense that the children get to open the letters themselves. Recommended without a doubt. My children love it!
Nice, but just milking the original really., 26 Feb 2007
This book has lots of lovely little envelopes to explore, with lots of lovely little letters, advertising fliers, cards etc in. It is undeniably beautiful, if a little delicate for little hands.
The only problem them I have with it is an incredible feeling of "been there done that".
The Jolly postman was fresh and exciting, this is just using the same idea over again.]
Relying so heavily on Christams as the theme also means that this book is limited to when it gets read, most people are really sick of Christmas by mid January (by most people I mean adults, the person usually required to read the story).
A nice book but don't bother if you already own the jolly postman, you just don't need two books so alike.
A true delight!, 10 Nov 2004
This a truly wonderful book, with a great little novelty items in each envelope. The Humpty jigsaw puzzle is my 3year old's favourite. Every page has fabulous illustrations, as you would expect from Janet Ahlberg, with loads of detail - just the sort that children love to pour over. My nearly 6year old daughter also still loves it. Highly recommended!!!
charming and fun book, 08 Nov 2003
I bought this book last year for my three year old niece who loves me reading to her. She asks for this book over and over and knows it by heart she always puts all the inserts back very carefully so as not to lose them and often we find her simply amusing herself by looking at the beautiful illustrations. The best christmas book she has had so far.
The Jolly Christmas Postman, 06 Apr 2003
This book was actually bought as a Christmas present, but as fans of Janet and Allan Ahlberg and especially The Jolly Postman, we sneaked a peek {or two}before wrapping it up. Not quite as funny as The Jolly Postman which is exceptionally entertaining for children and adults alike, The Jolly Christmas Postman is still a very good children's book and one they will ask for again and again. I would say it has appeal to a large age range from as young as 2-3years literally to adult, its one of those books you do actually enjoy reading, makes bedtime effortless!

Product Description
Burglar Bill is the delightful story of a thief who lives off other people's fortunes, until two major events change his life forever. The first is when he steals a box only to find it contains a baby, and the second is when he, too, is burgled, by Burglar Betty. The improbable union that follows offers a convenient moral that turns both thieves into honest folk who vow to keep on the straight and narrow. Bright illustrations (if somewhat stereotypical, with Burglars Bill and Betty in stripy shirts, eye masks and carrying swag bags!) cheer up this somewhat serious tale and break up the text for first readers. A lovely story to read together at bedtime. (Ages 4 to 7 years) --Lucie Naylor Amazon.co.uk Teacher Review Children need to read at home every day to practise the reading skills that they have been taught. Here are some tips to help make Burglar Bill part of your child's reading routine: - choose a time when you and your child both want to read, sit somewhere comfortable and quiet.
- before you begin to read, get a "feel" for the book by looking at the cover, front and back and talking about it.
- let your child hold the book and turn the pages. Look at the pictures.
- look for the little details--they help the child to understand what the book is about.
- let your child "read" the book to you by talking about each picture.
- read the book again and again if you both enjoy it.
If used to support learning at home, Burglar Bill can help first readers achieve the targets for Key Stage One English: Reading. -- Amanda York

Burglar Bill by Janet Ahlberg, 04 Dec 2006
My son loved this book. From an early age he'd ask for it to be read to him. I've bought this book for friends children, nieces and nephews and all have enjoyed it as much as my son when he was young. A lovely simple story with a morale that encourages interest in books and reading.
I'LL 'AVE THAT!, 17 Feb 2006
I adored this book as a child and would ask my Grandmother to read it over and over again. The story of a burglar like nobody else can tell it. Bill spends his days sleeping and his nights as a master criminal burglar! He will steal anything, baked beans, a toothbrush, a basket!!! Until one night he picks up more than he bargained for! This is definitely one for children of all ages. You and your child will laugh so much at the super silly Burglar Bill!

Product Description
The Jolly Postman must surely be one of the most innovative and interactive books for young children. Accompany the Jolly Postman on his rounds as he delivers post to classic children's characters, all of which happily live within his delivery round. Meet the Three Bears, Cinderella (now happily married to her Prince Charming), Goldilocks and many more. The real magic in this book lies in the inclusion of actual and highly personalised post for each character--each tucked into a neat envelope between the pages of the book. Enjoy Goldilocks' "Sorry" letter to the Three Bears, a Postcard to the Giant from Jack and, most amusing of all, the writ issued to the Big Bad Wolf (still occupying Grandma's cottage) by lawyers acting on behalf of both Red Riding Hood and the Three Little Pigs. The story is told in charming verse to compliment this very active and unusual storybook. The Jolly Postman is a treasure for children aged 2 to 6 years old. --Victoria MacKenzie

Lovely book. Great pictures. Our children love it.
It is one of my favourites.
Grown into it., 22 Oct 2007
I bought this a few months back but my boy never really got into it until now : he is 3 1/2. The rhyming story is OK, as is the gift set but the hook is obviously the letters.
Of these Goldilock's apology (however badly spelt), Cinderella's book deal and the birthday card are genius. The others are OK but it's these 3 which my boy firmly believes are real. It does lead to the difficult question why we have Goldilocks birthday money but, I am sure, there are trickier questions to come.
Great idea, but..., 29 Sep 2007
When we first saw this book we thought it was a great idea - a great way to introduce letters, post cards and the likes to our children.
However, reading some of the letters included in the book we came across sentences like "I am very sory indeed that I cam into your house and ate Baby Bears porij." Surely in a book intended to teach children to read, the spelling and grammar should be a good example. We stopped when we came across Jack's post card to the giant...
"Dear Giant Bigg,
having a nice time - me, my mum and your hen what lays the golden eggs. (It's better than traveller's cheques.) Saw a bloke as we was flying down - he was bigger than you! I've took note of his address. Take care of yourself - and your talking harp - I'll be back for that one of these days, I shouldn't wonder.
Bye for now - your (very) little pal, Jack"
Obviously Jack's ill gotten gains have not been put towards teaching him how to write. Nor does he seem to have a conscience as he writes so flippantly about his next planned crime.
It's such a shame that a good idea like this has been spoilt by such poor examples of English.

Marvellous, 28 Oct 2008
A beautiful rhyming story of bygone days with charmingly detailed illustrations. Regardless of what some reviewers say my daughter loved it from as early as 10 months, and still asks for it. As for it being a "stereotypical fairy tale of a 50's family" as one reviewer describes it, yes it is! But what do you want your children to read? True life crime? I think it's a nice introduction to history that Grandparents in particular will love to share with their little loved ones. A delight!
annoyingly conventional, 02 Oct 2008
I bought this book from all the rave reviews.. but was surprised at what an stereotypical, 50's fairy-tale of a family it conveys.. the baby peers through the holes in the pages to see his mummy and daddy happily sleeping together, mummy making porridge, daddy bringing coal, grandma hanging washing etc etc. If like me, you don't live in a house like this, you may find it a tad nauseating.
The illustrations are lovely, but my 15th month old is more interested in the more colourful 'there was an old woman..' and Spot.
An enchanting book for all ages, 29 Aug 2008
I remember reading Janet and Allan Ahlberg books when I was a child and can still recite sections from memory so was really looking forward to introduing my own children to their books. I have 20 month old twins and it was a real joy to find that they were just as entranced with this tale as I was. Given small children's love of repition it is a delight to find a book which they love and which is actually a joy rather than a chore to reread to them time and time again. The text is lovely and the level of detail in the pictures allows all three of us to find new things to spot each time we look at it. All in all a delightful book which I could not recommend highly enough for any parents of babies or small children.
Superb book for children, 10 Aug 2008
excellent book for children to engage with reading. We used for both our girls & they loved it. They would recite the words & that lead onto reading it back to us. Lovely pictures with so much to see & find
Disappointing - not so much fun for children, 28 Jun 2008
A book that a lot of parents tell you is the best book ever for children, but my daughter has not enjoyed it at any age. I agree with the other low-rating reviewers that it doesn't really have any of the things children love about books, the tiny detailed pictures are cute and nostalgic, but children aren't interested in those things. It's very right-on, just like all their books, but a turn-off in my house.

This a truly wonderful book, with a great little novelty items in each envelope. The Humpty jigsaw puzzle is my 3year old's favourite.
A classic!!, 17 Feb 2008
This book is one of the lasting memories of my childhood and luckily I still have the same copy from back then that I can now read to my own children. My youngest is 2 and she sometimes lacks the patience to wait for me to read all the text before jumping ahead to the next page but the charming illustrations enable her to have a good grasp of the story anyway. She loves the Burglar Cat and Burglar Baby.
It will always have pride of place on my bookshelf as it holds lovely memories for me and I hope my children look back on it with fondness in the years to come too. the ahlbergs at their best, 15 Mar 2007
The story of Burglar Bill, Burglar Betty and the baby was a great favourite with my children 30 years and more ago, and it's still a great favourite now that the generation moves on. Burglar Bill is not at all alarming, just the opposite, and it's nice that he finds happiness with Burglar Betty in the end. The pictures are lovely and the text is simple, direct and kindly.
Childrens classic, 02 Jul 2005

Beautiful Book, 17 Oct 2008
This is a beautiful book. The story and the illustrations work wonderfully together. Neither the story nor the illustrations take over, they are in balance with each other. It provides a thoroughly enjoyable reading experience. If you like graphic novels and illustrated books, this is definitely for you.
David Almond on top form, 16 Apr 2008
This story seems to me the best thing David Almond has written since The Fire-Eaters. It tells (in a brief compass) of a boy who overcomes bitter resentment towards a bully (who mocks him over his father's death) by writing a story, which then comes partially to life in the real world, about a feral child who lives like a wild animal and with whom he can half identify himself. Almond fans will recognize a number of themes that Almond has made peculiarly his own -- family affection, bereavement, the need to come to terms with the darker side of human character, and the strange borderline between fantasy and reality. The numerous illustrations (which are an integral part of the work and not just an accompaniment) have an appropriate roughness to them, though writer and artist should have come to an agreement over the savage boy's dress -- skins in the text, but jeans in the illustrations.

Childrens classic, 02 Jul 2005
I read this book over and over again as a child and adored it. I am now buying a copy for a friend's baby son. Not too cutesy, just a wonderful innocent book. Every kid should have this. Simply wonderful!!!!, 26 Aug 2008
I read this book for two children I was babysitting on Saturday night. I think I enjoyed it more than them! What a fab idea, perfectly written and illustrated. I'm going to be buying this for all the children I know this Christmas. AWESOME!, 26 Jun 2008
Read this book as a child - it was a true favourite of all the family! Still love it now (at university!) Lovely book!, 16 Jan 2008
Lovely pictures with so much to see & find Disappointing - not so much fun for children, 28 Jun 2008
A good early Thomas book - highly recommended, 17 Jan 2003
This book soon became a favourite with our 20 month old son who is very into books and currently especially Thomas books. He would ask for 'Bertie' since this is about how Bertie the bus challenges Thomas to a race. Although he enjoyed the sound button, and this did not last many days of rough toddler attention, there is plenty of opportunity in the text for making your own noises.
Excellent, 02 Jan 2001
I think that this is a very enjoyable book, especially for the younger readers, they will love constantley pushing the buttons on every page, creating amazing sounds and following the great storyline.
Great fun, 31 May 2008
If you don't know this story, it's about a couple of skeletons and a dog skeleton that live in a dark, dark cellar and venture out to scare people during the dead of night.
Not a very good story for a bedtime reader you might think!
In fact, the story is very funny and not at all scary and so makes an excellent bedtime reader. It also makes an excellent early reader, because as well as the story narrative, the skeletons engage in some very funny dialogue and jokes in the pictures. These can only be appreciated by older readers.
A brilliant book. Very highly recommended
Sun Class, 04 Mar 2008
Mrs. Hillman read this book to our class. All of the Funnybones books start in dark, dark places. We particularly enjoyed singing the song and our highlights included the part where the dog breaks into pieces. This is a very funny book which we all enjoyed.
FUNNYBONES, 04 Feb 2005
This book has been around a long time, a favourite when i was a child, and now my own children since they were tiny. No kids bookshelf should be without this book, they'll love it!!
Six stars, and even that won't be enough!!!!, 14 Oct 2004
It's AMAZING! The dramatic plot twists are archetypal of the children's adventure genre. In short, IT ROCKS! I think this book will appeal to the child in all of us. A great way for kids to learn as it juxtaposes humour and biological science as it intergrates to bone structure. The dramatic irony of the mishaps of the midnight trip keeps the audience in suspense and anticipation as to the story's climax. The typical genre conventions such as the full moon, the dark dark house, and the dark dark street, are the epitome of child ghost stories. READ IT! TJ.
It is sure to become a best-loved book on the book shelf., 03 Aug 2001
This children's classic centres on the adventures of a big skeleton, a little skeleton and a dog skeleton. They venture out from their dark dark cellar in the hope of finding someone to scare. However, since everyone is asleep in bed, they have to make do with scaring themselves. The results of which are hilarious! One of the great things about this book is that the repetitive nature of the language ("On a dark dark hill, there was a dark dark town. In the dark dark town there was a dark dark street") means children (both readers and non-readers) can easily join in with the rhythm. It is great fun to read the story one-to-one or with a group of children. It is sure to become a best-loved book on the book shelf. Whilst the story is funny and has great accompanying illustrations, be warned that for children younger than say four, the style and nature of the book may be a little menacing!

A favourite!, 06 Nov 2008
Buy it and you'll soon see...it will come out from the bookshelf time and time again.
amazing book let down by presentation, 26 Jan 2008

I bought this book last year for my three year old niece who loves me reading to her. She asks for this book over and over and knows it by heart she always puts all the inserts back very carefully so as not to lose them and often we find her simply amusing herself by looking at the beautiful illustrations. The best christmas book she has had so far.
