Stunning, charming, a must buy., 30 Sep 2008
This is a lovely collection of My Naughty Little Sister stories featuring all the favourites like 'The Naughtiest Story Of All' and many escapades with Bad Harry. Stunningly illustrated in colour by the fabulous Shirley Hughes it is the perfect book to share with young children at bedtime. Even though the stories were written over 50 years ago they have a timeless quality and the escapades of the children while very innocent compared to say, Horrid Henry, still keep the smalls entranced. My son, who is seven adores these stories especially the one where the naughty liitle sister and Bad Harry eat all of the birthday trifle before the guests arrive. Shirley Hughes's illustrations, as usual, are right on the button reflecting the world perfectly from a child's point of view. As a bonus this edition comes in a slipcase which not only protects the book but elevates it to 'ideal gift status'.

I sure don't know why this is billed 'for little girls' because my 5 year old son loves it. He loved the stories from age 3 and still loves to listen to them. I have a feeling he associates with the naughty little sister - she's a bit naughty and gets really angry sometimes, but at heart she's a nice kid.
I loved these stories when I was a child and it's great to see that they still appeal. They have a timelessness - just about being a child in a world you don't quite understand always. Not sure how much they would appeal to those very young children who appear to have been brought up on Harry Potter (at 5??) but you never know, it might give them a step back into a gentler, more appropriate place!

Our daughter is nearly five and seriously into the pony/animal books. She chose this one from the library because of the picture of the flying bear on the front cover. We read it within about three days because our daughter couldn't get enough of it and to be honest, partents and grand-parents were looking forward to the next installment too. Really enjoyable, with a tone/style similar to the Philip Pullman books (but not as 'dark'). Would love to know of any similar books.
Temmi and the flying bears reviewed, 02 Nov 2002
This book controls the emotions of children and adults alike and is an action packed adventure. I recomend this book to anyone who likes snow and wants a long adventure story. Ages 7+ should be amazed at the results of what may seem a silly little story.

A wonderful children's picture book., 22 Jul 1999
The masterful use of vivid colors and an interesting theme in Snowballs will surely draw any child's attention. The following everyday items: coffee beans, bottle caps, foil candy wrappers, and corn are all used to colorfully illustrate the components of a more realistic snow family. The picture book will inspire your children to go outside and make a snow person, instead of plopping down in front of the old TV.
A delightful and beautiful view of snowmen and winter, 08 Jan 1999
A visually outstanding picture book showing how all natural paraphenalia (buttons, ribbons, toy wheels, seeds, etc.) are used in the art of making a snow dad, mom, boy, girl, baby, cat and dog. Children become aware of the art of collage and the creativity involved in nature things. The book is complete with facts of winter, snow and then actual photographs of various snowmen made by children. As always, a Lois Ehlert masterpiece.

Smirking & self-important, a slug slithers its way up a highly suspect slope. Will the slug stop? Are the sparrow, the spider & the swallowtail simply trying to sabotage the slug's progress? Why is everyone screaming at the slug? Well, I live in Slugland &; I know why I scream at slugs as they eat my lettuce & lupines, so I had to pick up this book & find out what Pamela Duncan Edwards & Henry Cole had in store for me! This is a story of pride coming before a fall & most of all an almost tongue-twisting tale of slithering, slimey suspense. Wonderful stuff to get your esses in shape! ...

Straightforward with subtle humor, 20 Nov 1997
My baby (10 months old) loves Lois Ehlert's vivid collages. He really enjoyed Red Leaf, Yellow Leaf with its crumpled tissue leaves and real tree tags along with charming representations of people, trucks, etc. For the adult reader, there is subtle humor in the inclusion of what look like real tags from trees, and the attribution of homesickness to the tree (just when it was getting settled in, they dug it up and took it to the garden center...). Older children just learning to read will probably get a kick out of the inclusion of "hidden words"... tiny scraps of text set right into the pictures, saying things like "bird treat" and "squirrel"... There's even a recipe for the bird treat in the back of the dust cover!

The Prisoner's Apprentice contains all the magical ingredients a children's book should contain. Our hero, Yanis, is an orphan, rescued from a life of drudgery in the orphanage's laundry run by Mrs Pafnutkin (all the names are this delightful). When Yanis goes to work for the odd but kindly Dr Gomarus his life changes forever. This is Elboz's finest book so far; it is exciting, beautifully written and leaves you thinking about the characters long after the story has finished. Buy it for any child aged 9 - 12 who appreciates storytelling at its best.
