Product Description
This worthy winner of the Smarties prize in 1989 is a timeless classic that is enjoyed by children of all ages as well as by the adults who are continually asked to read it again and again. Follow the family's excitement as they wade through the grass, splash through the river and squelch through the mud in search of the bear. What a surprise awaits us all in the cave on the other side of the dark forest. Michael Rosen's lyrical, repetitive text reads aloud beautifully and Helen Oxenbury's delightful watercolour illustrations not only provide the perfect complement but also add another dimension to the story itself. (Ages 3 and over) A Big Book edition of this story is also available.

Fantastic, 19 Jan 2008
This is such a fun story. I have even used it on a teddy bear's picnic, getting the children to act out each part eventually finding a rather large teddy bear. Children of all ages love it.
Fantastic book, 23 Nov 2007
I have two small bilingual children with english being their second language. A very simple book which enables children to use their fantasy. They love this book, so much that my wife has had to translate it into swedish to keep them happy. We have been reading it for years. Everytime we head for a walk it is Bear Hunt time. We have both the large and travel version.
An ideal present for friends or relatives who are looking for a can't go wrong present.
We're going on a Bear Hunt, 14 May 2007
This is my children's favourite book. My daughter (now 4) was given it for her 1st birthday and has loved it from about 18 months. My son, now 2.5, has been read it since birth and they both adore it. Because it's so fantastically repetitive and poetic both of them can recite the whole thing without needing the book so we often recite it whilst going for walks. We even play "bear hunt" round the house. I think it's a fantastic introduction to beautiful poetic language as well as being a fun story. I have heard people say their kids found it frightening but neither of my children ever have - and my daughter is frightened of most things!
my daughter cried after this story, 08 Jan 2007
i bought this book because of the glowing reviews, however this is the first time my 3 yr daughter has been that upset after a story. the story is repetative and the bear doesn't appear to appreciate being disturbed nor does he look happy on returning home.
i wont be reading this book to my child again.
We're Going on a Bear Hunt, 13 Sep 2006
This is a really great book and is my 3 year old's favourite. We have read it many many times and because of the repetition in the book my daughter reads it along with me. We always look out for the bear now when we walk through the woods now to take her brother and sister to school and do the actions when we walk through grass etc. I also have the story CD of it that she can listen to when she goes to bed!

A great joy for the under 5s, 29 Oct 2008
'We're Going on a Bear Hunt' has been one of the favourite stories for children at the nursery where I work for years. It is a beautiful and well-constructed story, with nice use of repetitive language patterns that children can join in with or re-enact.
I was a little concerned by the idea of a DVD version: I didn't want to see one of the children's favourite stories ruined by over-production.
I needn't have worried. The DVD is beautifully-produced. It doesn't detract from the story in any way: the animation is simply an animated version of the illustrations from the book and the narration (by Kevin Whately and Emelia Fox) is just right. The added music track isn't intrusive, and it's used to partially set the words from the book to music. It's hard to remember now that the story didn't always seem to have this tune.
Presenting book and DVD together is a lovely idea.
Great Book, 06 Nov 2006
Well recommended book. Very good descriptive, rhythmic verses. Easy to read and engage children with. Fun family outdoor adventure! Children can sing-a-long too!

Product Description
When Michael Rosen and Helen Oxenbury's family go on a bear hunt, they are full of the bravado and confidence that the knowledge of failure brings: We're going on a bear hunt, We're going to catch a big one. What a beautiful day! We're not scared. Caves, mud, rivers, forest
whatever obstacles the family encounters, they overcome with reassuring ease. But when their quest is successful, they decide bear hunts are not to be repeated. Chunkily manageable for little hands, repetition of the "We can't go over it. / We can't go under it. / Oh no! / We've got to go through it" kind, and frequent onomatopoeia ("Swishy Swashy
Splash Splosh
Hoooo Woooo") will maintain interest for even the youngest of listeners. The only disappointment in this wipe-clean board book is that the colour story boards are alternated with less interesting black-and-white ones, but apart from that Helen Oxenbury keeps to her usual high standard of illustration and, combined with Michael Rosen's delightful tale, it's easy to see why We're Going on a Bear Hunt is a former winner of the Smarties Prize. (Ages 3 to 5.) - -Lucie Naylor

Got this as a gift for a three year old boy as I loved it so much as a young child. By the end of the day he had already started to learn the rhyhmes. Everything is exactly how you would remember only it's easier for small hands to hold and much more sturdy. We're Going to Catch a Big One!, 09 Oct 2008
We bought this book because somebody has recommened it to me but I thought it would be to old for my daughter, 7months when we bought it. She LOVES it. I could read to her all day and am sure it will be a fav for many years. Hours of Fun, 15 May 2008
We had loads of fun with our kids reading this one, but not just at home. They loved it so much they had both memorised it in no time and would love reciting it if ever we went on walks, especially through woods and streams. Very sturdy, high quality and fun, 02 May 2008
Our little boy got this book for his second birthday, and he loves it. I'm not sure he understands the story - a family go (unarmed) on a bear hnt and go through various obstacles, until they find a bear, which they then run away from - but he does very much enjoy the pop-up action features of it, and, three months on, he hasn't managed to destroy very much of it despite less-than delicate handling.
It only loses a star because the pages in between are skipped past, and because he is mainly interested in the page where the bear appears; meaning that I have to sit there for hours as he knocks on the cave 'door' opens it, growls and expects me to look shocked. There's also not that much to spot as you're working on vocabulary.
A good book, and a favourite at home. Brilliant, 11 Mar 2005
My son is three and loved this book. The book has a lot of repitition in it, which younger children love. He almosts knows all the storey off by heart. The pictures are lovely also, adding something different with some pages being in pencil drawings. Definatley worth the money.

So brilliant!, 18 Jun 2008
I loved the illustrations - Loved the pneumatic drill! My 5-year old laughs hysterically when I read it for her. It turns conventions upside down and makes traditional fairy tales seem tedious and bigotted. Go little wolves!!!
great book, 10 Jul 2007
I got this book when i was three and my mom would read it to me. I am now 17 and i read the book to myself and i still laugh everytime i read it. Its an awsome book!!!
Wonderful variation on an old and much loved tale, 23 Oct 2006
A few years ago I bought this for my cousin's young children, and they greatly enjoyed it. This year I bought it for my own five-year-old twins, and they also loved it. And it's also very funny for mummies and daddies.
As will probably be obvious from the title, it reverses the tale of the three little pigs and the big bad wolf. But where the big bad wolf was an arch loser who only managed to be dangerous because the first two pigs were silly, in this story the big bad pig is as smart as he is mean.
Probably the ideal time to introduce this to your children is when they have just started to get bored with or see the holes in the traditional versions of all the favourite stories - it would not be as funny to someone who did not know the story of the three little pigs.
Very strongly recommended.
the Best Kids Book, 16 Oct 2006
I can't recommend this highly enough. Both me and my 6 year old absolutelyy howl with delight every time we read it, and this is as much to do with the pictures as the text The face of the pig as he demolished house after house is ever more happy. Why it isn't better known beats me - though I guess traditionalists might be horrified at it!
A book they'll love -- and so will you, 25 Aug 2006
My five-year-old loves the idea of this book, that the little wolves can be scared and good while the pig is rough and bad.
It's an amusing read for both of you as the pigs go to greater and greater extremes to keep themselves safe while the wolf demolishes house after house with a chainsaw, pneumatic drill and even explosives. No time-wasting huffing and puffing here!
The thing that lost this book a star for me is the ending. The pig is sorry, the wolves invite him in for a cup of tea and all's right with the world. Maybe I just have a particularly blood-thirsty child, but for us it fell flat after the excalation of tension throughout the story.
Try it, though; I guarantee you'll both enjoy it!

I have had this book for years and every child that comes into my home loves it,i really enjoy reading it and the children like to shout the repetative words. A great buy!!!
We've read this 'So Much'!, 03 Sep 2008
So Much
This book is brilliant - loads of repetition and really shows the different relationships the baby has with his family. I've read this book to my son loads of times and each time it's a pleasure to read and we've both got smiles on our faces when the books finished.
Superbly written book and a wonderful story., 21 Mar 2008
What an absolutely brilliant book. I used to read it, accent and all, to my Daughter almost every night before she went to bed. The pictures are So Good too. 10 years later, I still remember all the words!
You must buy this and give your kids( and yourself) a treat.
We love this book "SO MUCH"!, 08 Aug 2007
Successive family members arrive at the house on a sultry summer afternoon, each announcing themselves noisily and expressing their love for the toddler in their own individual way. Each time, the commotion dies down until the next arrival, everyone apparently waiting for something to happen - but what? All the while, the toddler revels in the attention he is receiving and the family delight in his presence.
We've had this book for a few years now and I've recently started reading it all over again - this time to my youngest, who is just 3. Initially, it took me a while to get the hang of the text and it annoyed me that there were, apparently, grammatical errors. I kicked myself when I eventually realised that it's meant to be read with a lilting West Indian rhythm and that the language is actually perfect for the genre. My older two daughters, aged 6 and 5, now creep into the room to listen, unable to resist the charm of the characters, the vibrant illustrations and the poetic rhythm of the text.
It has stood the test of time, 08 Feb 2007
A pleasure to read, a pleasure to hear and a pleasure to watch the sheer delight on my children's faces as they absorb the colourful illustrations. I bought this when it was first published for my son who is now 14. Having survived him and his 11yr old sister I am now reading it to my 2yr old. The older ones still join in but now there's an argument over who actually owns the book! So I'm online buying three new copies to settle the dispute. I wonder if I should buy a few more for any future grandchildren...?

Perfect, 12 Oct 2008
Fab,Fab,Fab!!!, 23 Oct 2008
I wonder if I should buy a few more for any future grandchildren...?
sweet story, but very repetitive, 17 Nov 2008
It's a nice enough story with lovely pictures (hence 4 stars), albeit half of them in b&w - is that for colouring in? I don't like that the paragraph (We are going on a bear hunt. We're going to catch a big one. What a beautiful day! We're not scared.) is repeated 6 times in the book. The book is great for making a play of it, that sounds like fun, but just reading it is probably a little boring.

Entertainingly illustrated with good rhymes, 27 Sep 2000
This is one a series of four fairly large size board books aimed at toddlers. They have large clear pictures with four babies (ethnicly distinguishable in a gentle sort of way) playing games a bit like a children's action rhyme. The rhymes are just the sort of thing children like to do: waving, banging pan lids etc. My nearly 2 year old identifies herelf with the bald baby and happily waves and bounces and giggles according to the pictures. My only complaint is that they are a bit big to be held by a child on a changing mat! Apart from that they're all great.

We're going to catch a big one. What a beautiful day! We're not scared.) is repeated 6 times in the book. The book is great for making a play of it, that sounds like fun, but just reading it is probably a little boring.
Tickle Tickle, 31 Aug 2008
Like the other reviewers this is a firm favourite with my daughter. We've had it for the past year and its already worn out (perhaps because we have to read it 20 times a day!) She always giggles as we reach the end. Bright pictures and simple words makes it a winner. It'll be stuck in your head after about the 4th read though!

helen oxenbury's tickle tickle has been a family favorite for years. my 12 year old daughter, 5 year old son, and current 1 year old son have worn out our current copy, so we need to order another. the illustrations are colorful, multicultural, and pleasing to the eye for children and adults alike. my husband and i have the entire book memorized from frequent readings. and all three of our children, at the age of 1, would "act" out the text of the book. we would definately recommend this to other families.

A book to enjoy sharing with your baby time and time again., 27 Sep 2000
This book captures baby's attention immediately. They love the cheerful baby faces and copying the actions of the babies in the book. My son laughs in anticipation of the finale. It is a perfect book for babies, just enough word content and in rhyme. I often find my son looking at this book on his own (it has been his favourite book since he was 10 months old). I have read this book to him hundreds of times and I still enjoy it myself.

Perfect, 12 Oct 2008
Fab,Fab,Fab!!!, 23 Oct 2008

My three year old loves this, 21 Apr 2008
My three-year old son just got this for his birthday, he already loved the story but wants to play the board game every day (over and over if I let him!). As some body else said - you can choose to play with colours or numbers so it is suitable for young children and great for learning colours. Also my son gets very exited watching the DVD and likes to read the book along with it, which I think is helping him with early reading skills. My only criticism would be that more green uh-oh cards are needed, as two is not really enough - I tend to make sure they are near the top of the pile or it can be | | |
