iPAQ Pocket PC, 10 Nov 2005
More of a "What your iPAQ can be used for" than a "How to do it" book. You will glean more from the forums. Interesting reading, non-the-less. Fine for older low spec IPAQs, 06 May 2004
This book does not cover the newer IPAQ models and features such as are found in the 5000series etc . IPAQ for Dummies is much more up to date and a better read if you have later models. A bad buy....for me at any rate
Not too much help?, 27 Aug 2003
Confused by the two reviews that already existed for this product (one saying it was 5 stars and the other giving it 2) I decided to give the book ago. It's not a bad book, but I think that if you have a reasonable level of skill with your iPAQ then this book will add little extra. It does not give to many secrets about the inner workings of PocketPC and the iPAQ and is more an overview. There are however some useful web resources from which you can pick up some useful programs that get that little bit extra from this useful machine.
A huge return for a small investment..., 13 Jan 2003
I read the comments from the other review above and felt I should comment. This book was written before the 3970 iPAQ was released, and the Nevo software wasn't out on the earlier models. I don't believe that the comments above are a fair assessment... I had a Palm. I used it to look up addresses and phone numbers. Then I spent $500 on a fancy ipaq, so now I could look up addresses in color... I think the reason I never really did more was I didn't understand how to use all the stuff that comes with it. This book helped me to understand a lot more and now I use my iPAQ way more and get much better value out of my investment. I would recommend this to any ipaq owner who isn't getting their money's worth out of their device!
How to do the basics with your IPAQ, 13 Oct 2002
Having recently purchased an IPAQ intending to use it extensively for both work and play, I thought that a book entitled 'How to Do Everything with Your Ipag Pocket PC' was just what I needed. However, I was very disappointed to find that the book does not even cover all the functionality of the out of the box software. There is no mention of the Nevo remote control software for controlling devices such as your TV and stereo around the house, or of how to create, store and listen to MP3 in conjunction with the multi windows media player. Instead there are large chapters devoted to using pocket word and excel and playing games, not of which the proficient PC user needs. I did find some of the information on GPS navigation, and hardware and software accessories useful, as well as some of the tips and websites. However, don't believe what is says of the cover, this book should be entitled, "How to do the basics with your IPAQ" and nothing more.

Product Description
In Palm for Dummies, Bill Dyszel shows you how to use the operating system and the suite of applications that ship with it on 3Com and Handspring platforms. The Palm OS, the functional core of the Palm series of handheld computers from 3Com and the Visor series from Handspring, is easy to learn and fun to use. With its simple elegance and range of available software, it's great for people who need to keep track of details and don't want to use a big laptop computer all the time. Mostly, this book is straight documentation of the Palm OS environment, with explanations of what it can do and procedures that detail processes for you. It's an approach that's better suited to a ponderous productivity application or business-orientated operating system. The author should do more in this book to introduce the reader to the fun of Palm OS computing. He should share more opinions on favourite aftermarket software, too. Also, the forced casual tone of the Dummies series--this book includes a chapter called "Ten (Or So) Troubleshooting Tips"--is beginning to show its age. The tone that seemed friendly when it was a novelty now, more frequently than not, seems sloppy. Readers don't want to be bored, and dry presentations of unadorned facts certainly are no fun. But a book about a computing environment as vibrant as the Palm OS, with its colourful communities of users and developers, shouldn't have to rely on dumb jokes and cutesy lines to engage the reader. This isn't Dyszel's fault, as he wrote to the Dummies series' standard style. But David Pogue's PalmPilot: The Ultimate Guide is a better book, despite being somewhat dated. --David Wall Topics covered: The Palm OS operating system for handheld computers, including Palms and Visors. Specifically, coverage touches on the Graffiti handwriting-recognition system, applications (those that come with the operating system) for managing appointments and contacts, and connectivity via the HotSync cradle and modem hardware. Wireless operations with the Palm VII get attention, and there's a directory of aftermarket software that's organised by profession. --Willam Steinmetz

You truly can do everything with your Clie, 03 Apr 2005
This is a wonderful book that is full of not just great ideas but how to uses what you have. More important is, knowing how it works.
First the down side, the book seems geared mainly at the higher end Clie's. With add-on's most Clie's will do the same thing. What's that foreign object on page 158? (Palm V). The book reads like a big advertisement for top-end Clie's.
Now the good stuff:
This book covers:
* Learn about the different Clie models and choose the right one for you
* Connect your Clie to a PC to synchronize
* Enter text and numbers with the Graffiti handwriting system
* Manage your appointments with the built-in Date Book
* Use the Address Book to maintain a comprehensive contact list
* Take detailed notes and export them to Microsoft Word And Other applications
* Master Clie security and search feature
* Assemble the ultimate road-warrior survival kit for your Clie
* Connect your Clie to a cell Phone or modem for e-mail and Web access
* Turn your Clie into a mobile office and leave the laptop behind
* Exchange documents between your Clie and Windows applications such as Word and Excel
* Learn about X-Master and other valuable Clie utilities
* Track your Stocks, expenses, and billable hours
* Discover different and better ways to enter data into your Clie
* Capture and view digital photos and movies
* User your handheld as a TV guide and universal remote
* Download and play great games
* Find and read e-books on your Clie
* Learn about working with Memory stick media
* Expand and enhance your Clie with keyboards, cases, and other accessories
Chapter 22 on the memory stick was worth the book alone. Several places have valuable web addresses.

Product Description
The authors of this guide take the approach that handheld computers based on the Palm operating system are so user-friendly and crash proof, that it's useless to spend a lot of time telling you how to get it to work. Rather, How to Do Everything with Your Palm Handheld is more of a task master, leading the reader through such productivity tips as tracking expenses, planning trips and using the Palm as a business productivity software suite. Though the book is weighted heavily toward the Palm Pilot, it is targeted toward users of all devices based on the Palm OS, such as the IBM WorkPad ,the Qualcomm pdQ and the Handspring Visor, to which the authors devote an entire chapter. What Dave Johnson and Rick Broida do best is explain how to get the most out of those features you probably gave only a cursory glance. Most users probably create to-do lists on their Palm handhelds, but how many of them import those lists into other applications, such as Microsoft Word and Excel? Both programs build tables based on to-do list data. Palm handhelds also come with an applet called Sun Compass, which could come in handy when you're on the road. Given that so many people use their Palm Pilots as glorified address books, the tips Johnson and Broida supply are highly useful. How to Do Everything with Your Palm Handheld will show you how to make these popular devices the ultimate productivity tools. --John Frederick Moore, amazon.com

Very Good, 22 Jul 2001
This is an excellent book, which tells you all you need to know about the Palm device.(upto the V series, as it does not cover the M series). This book is a must for anyone who owns a Palm, and my only criticism is that this book was published in 2000 and so does not include a lot of newer and better applications, nor does it cover Palm OS 4.
A must for every Palm Owner, 10 Jan 2001
Quite simply this book has turned my Palm from "new toy" to invaluable tool. The book is packed full of useful tips, details of what software is available and where to download it. It also looks at the whole issue of Palm connectivity and explains it in an easily digestable format. In short I would wholeheartedly recommend this book to any Palm owner - I can almost guarantee that even if you think you know all there is to know about your Palm that this book will be able to teach you a few more tricks.
Very Good, 28 Dec 2000
This is a very intresting and useful book for everyone who uses Palm devices. It teaches everything you need to know about this Operating System. Everyone should buy it.

Product Description
Two experienced technical journalists have pooled their talents to produce what is both a reference volume and a how-to book--one to have handy as a comprehensive library of methods and applications, yet suitable as reading material when you are whiling away travel time looking for fresh uses for your Visor or Visor Deluxe. The Visor is a palm-held device, a clone of the Palm (formerly known as PalmPilot), and functions using the same operating system, Palm OS. It is a product of Handspring, and was invented by Jeff Hawkins, the inventor of the original Palm. This kind of device has been dubbed Personal Digital Assistant (PDA), and many users think of it merely as a handy adjunct to their PC or Mac, capable of doing "small" jobs when away from the "proper" computer. How to Do Everything with Visor dispels that concept, demonstrating that these Visor models (and similar PDAs, to be fair) are computers in their own right, capable of handling an office environment as readily as a computerised diary. There are clear and succinct instructions about how to use standard programs and options, and moreover how to exploit them for your own style of operation. There are also interesting details of the operation of utilities that can be added to the Visor, along with useful guidelines. Crystal clear instructions take you through processes exploiting the interface between your Visor and your PC (or Mac). There is an eye-opening discussion of life (and enhanced life) with Graffiti, the famous but irksome technology that translates (in theory) penned inscriptions into text characters. --Wilf Hey

However, don't believe what is says of the cover, this book should be entitled, "How to do the basics with your IPAQ" and nothing more.
iPAQ Pocket PC, 10 Nov 2005

This is a very intresting and useful book for everyone who uses Palm devices. It teaches everything you need to know about this Operating System. Everyone should buy it.
Its the Visor users bible!!, 10 Feb 2001
Before I read this book, I thought the Visor was just like any other organisor. This book totally changed my opinion, it details every in-built aspect as well as suggesting other uses & where to go for extra visor resouces. It also is in a very easy to read style & does not resemble an instruction manual. If you have a visor, then get this book to ensure you make full use of the features your already missing (which I gurantee you are doing!!).
