It Helped Me To Switch, 08 Oct 2008
It doesn't matter which magazines you buy that are for Apple computers, the brainwashing starts straight away, such is Apple's marketing skill.
So when I was considering buying an Apple laptop, I wanted to find something 'independent' and the Dummies guide appealed.
The advice inside was clear, and they are impartial. It pointed out a few downsides to Apple computers, but there certainly aren't many of those. To coin a phrase, a liked the book so much I went out and bought the computer. Occasionally I dip back into it just to clarify a few points, but in my expereince Apple computers do just work. It appears the marketing isn't all brainwashing. It's true.
This is a useful book at allaying your fears if you're fed up with Microsoft and are considering switching to Macs.

Mac OS X Leopard, 29 Mar 2008
This book is excellent value for money at less than £10 (+p.&p.) for 953 pages. I have been using Leopard for more than four months, since 26th October, and have kept in regular touch with the advice on the Apple Discussions pages. Even so, on nearly every page, I have found something I did not know.

Astonishingly dumb. I usually like "For Dummies" books, but this is ground-breakingly dumb., 21 Jun 2008
The book is written from exactly the wrong end - the author has started with the menus and icons visible to you, and tells you what they do. Often this is as mindless as showing you a picture of the menu that will come up if you press a particular button. Good computer books are organised the other way around - they start from what you want to do, and tell you how to get there.
Did you need to know that the Calculator application is for Maths? This book is for you! Did you need to know that the Back button will take you back one step? Did you need to know that the command "Empty the Trash" deletes the files in the Trash folder? This book is for you! Did you need to know how to browse the internet securely? This book can't help you. (The complete failure of the book to mention Firewalls is just one illustration of the author's total failure to include any information that would be of any use.) Possibly, if you've never used a computer of any type before, you might be glad you bought this book, but even then you'd need another book by the end of the week.
useless, 27 Sep 2006
414 pages and i cant find anything that a 5 year old would not already know.Things like apple works dont even get a mention but half a page on how to unpack a printer plus sickeningly confusing titled chapters such as looks like save acts like save whys it called save as and .gimme an A gimme a V COMPLETE WASTE OF MONEY
Great help even for a refugee from the PC, 22 Sep 2006
This is an excellent guide to OS X. I have not used a Mac since 1990 and just switched this year (2006) after using mainly PCs since the 80s. Of course there were quite a few hurdles to overcome (where is the right-button??), but Bob really has produced a great introduction that is easy to follow and does not send the reader to sleep. The chapters are bite-sized, because none of us want to read a book before using the Mac - with this you can skip through another chapter and pick up a few more nuggets very quickly. Now I'm far more comfortable with the Mac OS X than I ever was with Windows and it's all thanks to this book.

Brilliant Guide, 23 Nov 2007
Great book on Ipods, full of tips and tricks for both my player and the Itunes website. A life saver in fact, can't recommend it enough.
way too basic, 03 Jan 2007
This books seems to spend an eternity telling very basic things. Quite often I have wanted further information on something and found that the book deoesn't cover it. Instead it spends most of it's time wasting paper space on the most simple of procedures.
Not good. I will be looking for a more advanced guide.

This book is a con., 17 Nov 2007
This book is out of date and innaccurate. Just one example,.. it refers to iMovie HD which has been replaced by a new version of iMovie which was installed in all iMacs several months before lLeopard was released. It has no relevance at all to the the Leopard Operating system. Stacks, an innovation in Leopard is not mentioned at all.
