A fantastic game,a fair guide, 07 Nov 2008
I can say without any fear that Final Fantasy 7 is one of the greatest games ever. But this is a review of the official guide and as such I can recommend this guide but must add that it doesn't show you everything there is to see.
I completed the game and then bought the guide and was amazed at how much I had missed.I followed this guide and doubled my playing time and actually managed to find Vincent and Yuffie and use them as playable character's which I failed to do first time around.I also managed to obtain the Knights Of The Round summon which was hard work but very worthwhile.
This is a very good guide and while it doesn't quite provide all of the answers,it does expand on this fantastic game quite a lot. Good but not perfect, 13 Mar 2007
I've completed FFVII many, many times using this guide and others on the net. It is generally a good guide but there are a few secrets that it doesn't mention at all. There are a number of monsters missing from its bestiary and a materia that isn't listed. Other than that it is ideal for all causal FFVII gamers but the hardcore would be better using online guides written by FFVII geeks like me! It's not the best guide - yet it's the official guide!!!, 21 Feb 2006
The guide shows every section of the main game, where to get the items and what's available in the shops - dead helpful and detailed, so you don't miss an item. There's a good bestiary, which is handy if you want a particular item fom Morphing a monster. The bad points come to light if you're looking to do all the extra quests. For a start it doesn't tell you exactly when things are available... It doesn't go into detail in how to defeat the Emerald and Ruby Weapons. Nor does it tell you when the its best time to visit the crashed Shinra Submarine (you can miss out on a not-too-vital fight against Rude and Reno otherwise!) If you want to get all the Enemy Skills then you need to keep checking the bestiary - rather than telling you when the skills are first or easily available! Not helpful if you've missed your only chance to collect a skill! It's not very detailed with betting on the Chocobo Racing - where you could get the Sneak Attack, Gil Plus, EXP Plus materia! If you want to complete this game to it's fullest, then you need to know exactly when side quests are available, when to gain Enemy Skills, when to do the chocobo racing and gain a Gold Chocobo - otherwise you could miss out on many smaller elements to the game. The EXP Materia, for example, is a time saver when it comes to trying to Master all your Summon Materia, so you can gain the Master Summon Materia... and so forth! It's quite annoying that the official guide isn't that deep. I do feel rather let down that the games creators have created something so shoddy. Thankfully the game is ten years old and this guide has been banging about the same time - the wonders of the internet and all FFVII fans have taken their time to create indepth guides freely available to download! For the sake of a tenner, you might as well buy this, and then print out the other information from the internet. Then you can truly say you've completed the game for 100%!!
Really Helpful and Very Indepth Information, 24 Jan 2006
I have completed this game a few times before, so i thought I would get this guide and see what sorts of things I had missed in the game. You wouldn't believe the ammount of hidden items, secret areas and such. This book in no way spoils the game, it adds to the pleasure of playing. I would recommend anyone who has played this game before to buy this book.
Final Fantasy VII Strategy Guide, 21 Dec 2005
I have completed the game several times but yet never found all the hidden items. When I saw this guide I thought yeah why not. I can honestly tell you it is well worth the money. It go through step-by-step walkthrough of the game and provides tips and hints for difficult parts. The only downside is that when you have completed the game and think that you have completed all aspects it goes on to tell you about things like coloured chocobos and how to fight the weapons. Overall this is a fantastic guide and would recommened to anyone!!!

Good, but not the best., 23 Sep 2008
In terms of a strategy guide for Final Fantasy VIII, it's unbeatable.
But in terms of a Piggyback brand guide, it's not the best.
Quite a lot less pages compared to guides for games such as FFX and FFX-2
Perhaps due to fewer content but meh...
It could be a little more reader friendly also, finding the information you need can be rather annoying at times, for these reasons I give it 3 stars. For being the best guide you can currently get for FFVIII I give it another star.
4/5*
Good product really, worth buying.
An excellent book to accompany the game, 02 Sep 2003
This book is fantastic its full colour pages are packed with information, screenshots and maps. I’d been playing the game for absolutely ages and just couldn’t figure out what to do in Ultimecia’s castle so I eventually resorted to buying this guide and I’m glad I did. Everything is clearly described and it’s not just a walkthrough there are lists of monsters, cards, weapons and even details on characters and guardian forces. The only problem with it is that once I finished my game I wanted to start again and work my way through all the secrets described in the book A very worthy purchase to accompany the game.
Final Fantasy VIII Official Strategy Guide, 05 Oct 2002
This is a very good book, containing a lot of secrets. The only thing I don't like is all the secrets and cards are at the back of the book, although they are referenced in the text, you have to flick back and forth. Also some people might miss the references and miss out on the secret, but if the article was written on the same page it would be easier to find. Overall, a very worthwhile purchase!
ACE!!!, 07 Sep 2002
This is the best book I have ever read in my life!!! If you play/played FF8, you will be gripped from start to finish! Everything you need to know is in it! GF's, item lists, detailed maps, a massive walkthrough, and loads more! It is sooooooooooo worth the money! Buy it!!
Highly recommended, 06 Apr 2002
This is a very detailed strategy guide, including everything I expected from it and more. I especially like the characters section where you can see some stunning original artworks of the characters. The guide is packed full of maps which I found extremely useful on several occasions. The secrets section is also very imformative. Also, another good point about this book is that it doesn't give much away. By that, I mean that sequences such as the ending are left for the player to witness, instead of accidentally reading about it in the guide, thus ruining the game (at least it would for me). I would highly recommend this item.

Useful, 20 Jun 2007
I found this book really quite useful as it gives you all the necessary details about every standard aircraft on FS2004 to hand. It also walks you through some great training flights that can really help you get used to the simulator.
Worth the investment! :)
It IS worth having!, 05 Oct 2005
I bought this, and find that it does contain almost word for word all advice and info in the program. BUT! In spite of this, it is much better than making your own hard copy, as it has a useful index, and can be read at your leisure, or used as a 'knee pad'.
Very Basic - Nothing New, 06 Jun 2005
Nothing in this that isn't already shipped with the main program.....so if you don't mind printing out stuff from the Help documentation, this book is really a waste.

Worth getting, 15 Jan 2002
Well worth getting this book for its useful tips and background information on the routes. I haven't dared to try the Game Tools yet, so I don't know how good the book is on this subject. However, just like TrainSim itself, I'm afraid the book does contain some errors, which can cause confusion, especially on the Marias Pass chapter. It mixed up east and west at one point, and also refers to the wrong goods yard elsewhere, for example. Station stops in the simulator do not always match those in the descriptions. However, all in all, the book is useful and interesing, even if it is written in American!
The manual MSTS should have had in the box, 15 Aug 2001
This book is great for getting you started with the simulator. It walks you though all the activities with detailed instructions on how to finish them (if in a way that would get you the sack in real life) The best part is a basic overview of the game editors. They can be hard to use and the book helps a lot. On the down side, 2 weeks after buying the book everything I want to know is "beyond the scope of this book"
An invaluable guide, 05 Jul 2001
I found this book invaluable when playing the American release, and David Chong really does help you. With the tips he provides, and the easy to understand graphics and guides, this book really does add something extra to the game!

Age of Mythology - some stuff you didn't know!, 01 Dec 2003
This book can be broken into several distinct sections. The first details basic economy and military stuff. Read it carefully as the game differs in subtle but significant ways to the other AoE games. Farms is a good example. The next 3 chapters deal with the three cultures individually. Once again some very useful tips appear for the idiosyncrasies of each culture. Read carefully and digest. The next few chapters cover the missions. Bizarrely this is stuck between the basic stuff of the cultures and then the advanced stuff. Lots of clues and hints on how to complete the mission. The final section has several chapters detailing advanced economy, military and then advanced greek, egyptian and norse strategies. Very very good section. Some very good samples of how to cause grief to your enemy! Overall the book is written clearly with an easy use of language so anyone can read it. There is repetition of information in some of the chapters; but that is good as it allows the casual reader to pick it up and still learn. As a final note, you get a rather nice pull-out poster to stick on your wall!

4/5*

A good, solid guide., 09 Sep 2008
Fitting in a condensed HL2 guide and then HL2.E1 and E2, followed by Portal and a summary of TF2 is what is written on the book - and thats what you get.
It also lists the achievements you can get, some easter eggs and other munchy treats.
The portal guide, however, is a bit hard to understand when doing the puzzles (I never did need the guide, but looking through it and playing it was a bit of a toughie) therefore the photos that go with it are a bit unneccesary, usually the entire photo is blocked with a picture of a companion cube.
The TF2 guide is useful - for its time. Now with updates, new maps and new weapons its dated. However, it still only points out the bloody obvious. Ofcourse you would know which key is reload, ofcourse you know heavies and medics are a good pair - its simple stuff.
It has some artwork pieces of extras, etc, but it would have been nice for even more extras. Worth the 5 quid I spent on it, though I would hesitate with 10+.
... only when you've completed the game! NOT BEFORE!, 30 Jan 2005
OK, firstly we are all aware that Half Life 2 is a truely unique game, most particulary the story, and mainly the graphics (that is if your GPU can handle the power!) When i first play this game I was blown away on how good it was, the game created the right atmospheres at the right times, tension rising at particular parts and not forgetting those times when you start to panic (my mates laughed at me for that :S). These are the elements that make HL2 such a big success. If you've not played the game before or completed it, then this guide will spoil it all, reveal all the twists and story from as soon as you turn the first page, and that would be a waste of the odd £35-£44 on the game (depending if you got the collectors edition :P) the story has been built precisely for the player and it would be a shame if you actually knew what was coming up before it happened. This guide will show you every hidden location, all items in all areas, how to defeat enemies and much much more, this is a great companion to those who want to play it through a 2nd time, but I would strongly recommend that you purchase this after the completion of the game, or if you can't resist, buy it but store in a safe place. I have to admit I have been tempted at times but let me tell you this, the story has a unique twist! and its more rewarding if you discover it yourself :P But dispite what I just said, the ultimate choice is yours! those that still want to buy it, try and get as far on it before the guide arrives, and those that already completed it- GAME ON!
Live and Let Live, 15 Dec 2004
I wish people would stop dictating to other gamers how they should or shouldn't play. If someone wants to buy a strategy guide and follow it to the letter, that's up to them - as long as they enjoy themselves, what's it got to do with anyone else? If you never use guides and would rather play through on your own, that's okay too. THERE IS NO RIGHT OR WRONG WAY TO PLAY!!! Personally I always try to play through on my own, but like to have the guide handy just in case I get REALLY stuck. However, if you are thinking of getting this guide but don't want the plot revealed, beware. Some guides give you a 'spoiler free' walkthrough but this one does not. I haven't actually used my copy as yet, but it very clearly states at the beginning that the book includes spoilers. So you may want to resist the temptation to flick through the guide before you need to...
Must have for a half life fan, 26 Nov 2004
Ok, i've seen the other reviews bickering about this, and calling it a big spoiler, bu thats a very narrow view. This guide is a superb book, which complements (rather than destroying) the half-life 2 experience. I wouldn't reccommend reading it on your first play through the game, as it could spoil the plot, but for any fan who decides to play through again and wants to get the full experience, it's a must-have. Full of tips, easter-eggs and secrets, its a great read and WELL worth to £10-odd pounds i paid for it.
Sacrelige!, 13 Nov 2004
The most pointless book since how to learn French was translated into French? Quite possibly but the real issue here is that this book contains spoilers for the game .......... In fact it will reveal the whole plot! The plot that Valve have been desperately trying to keep under wraps since HL2 was announced? And now this book comes out BEFORE the game??? You know those things called 'Spoilers' that everybody hates & if you have any decency you will mark your forum posts that contain them with huge RED warning signs incase you upset other gamers by revealing stuff about a game/movie they haven't even seen yet? Well, This book is basically one big spoiler!! My advise to anyone who wants to enjoy the HL2 experience to the full is to stay well clear of this book at least until you have played through the game on your own. I mean what kind of gamer needs a strategy guide for an FPS anyway? A blatant cash in on the HL2 phenomena & there's another reason to avoid it.

If you've not played the game before or completed it, then this guide will spoil it all, reveal all the twists and story from as soon as you turn the first page, and that would be a waste of the odd £35-£44 on the game (depending if you got the collectors edition :P) the story has been built precisely for the player and it would be a shame if you actually knew what was coming up before it happened. this book is great, it tells you about how to build a great civilization, to a brimming army that can include small foot soldiers to ginormous giants with massive clubs. it tells you that there is a a wide array of land to fight on, like forests, desert and sea.thats why i think this book is great, and hopefully the game will be great to. tom jeavons.
