A Good Introduction to Dinosaurs for kids..., 11 Nov 2007
I bought this book for my 5 year old son who has just started getting into dinosaurs (he likes Harry and his bucketful of Dinosaurs...)
It shows a good cross-section of Dinosaurs, what they eat, how big they are, etc. etc. and is enough to increase interest and prompt more questions.... He loved the pictures and laughed at some of the names!
We have now graduated to the DK dinosaur encyclopaedia which has a lot more detail, and whilst the text is too advanced for a 5 year old it's the logical progression and can be revisited when more of the words make sense...
This is a good starter book and makes an ideal present.
The book for the kids who ask you about dinosaurs, 13 Dec 2000
This is an excellent book, with realistic pictures, but simple information suitable for children ages 5 to 10. Also for everyone who wants to know essentials about dinosaurs. It teaches you about their names, diet, size, ... with comparisons, so it is easier to learn the basics. I think we have chosen the best for the kids who started imaging dinosaurs.

Good dot to dot book, 22 Sep 2005
This is a very good book. 11 large double pages of dot to dot drawings with typically between 4 and 6 different dot to dots on each double page. The different creatures are colour coded and there is some text naming and in some circumstances describing each animal (pedantic parents will be pleased to note that the book is explicit that dinosaurs are always land based - the flying reptiles of the period are pterosaurs and the swimming reptiles of the period are plesiosaurs). Some of the dot to dot pictures are quite simple but some are large and complex with more than 80 dots. For me, the best bit of the whole book is a key page at the end showing, naming and giving the correct pronunciation for 38 dinosaurs - after all these years I now know how to pronounce diplodocus.

Long long ago....., 13 Sep 2008
Usborne books can usually be relied upon to deliver, but this one is a little disappointing. It is sold as a book for children who are beginning to read on their own, andthe language is appropriate, but the amount of text could be off-putting to an absolute beginner. Most of our favourit dinosaurs are there, as well as many less well-known ones. Illustrations are a bit fanciful - Apatosaurus with purple, blue and green markings; Allosaurus with "go faster" stripes and Stegosaurus with a "sunburst" underbelly. The book rightly points out that no-one really knows what colour they were, so the illustrations might be correct. However, they conflict with conventional representations (for example in the BBC "waling with Dinosaurs" series) and this may cause confusion. Packed with useful, easily digested information, but probably not a good first book for young enthusiasts.

Superb!!, 30 Jan 2007
This is a fantastic pop up book, a must for any young natural history fans. I bought it for my son's 6th birthday, he's totally fascinated by it and has even taken it to school today to show his class. Great value and worth every penny to keep him off his playstation for a while!
Wow, 30 Oct 2006
This is the most amazing pop-up book I've ever seen. The detail is absolutely awesome and you can really appreciate the amount of time and craftsmanship that's gone in to creating it.
The T Rex and the bird on the last two pages are incredible, but the smaller ones are amazing too.
A must for any dinosaur fans.
Amazing, 21 Apr 2006
It may only be 12 pages but this book is just astounding. The paper engineering that has gone into this book is so detailed that entire dinosaur skeletons pop out of the book, and if you've ever met a T-Rex in cardboard this is the best way to see it.
As well as one big pop up per double page, there are numerous popups with intricate smaller popup sections with more details about the pages.
It's not your average pop up book this has to be the best pop up book I've ever seen. Not good for the very little ones as they'd wreck it in no time.
Simply brilliant.

My baby loves this book!, 23 Dec 2003
We read this book almost every day! Since she was 5 months old my daughter has shown obvious pleasure when I choose this story to read. She even has a favourite page that she laughs at each time! I don't get tired of re-reading this book, I want to buy more in this series!
My daughter loves this book!, 22 May 2003
We must have read this book about 100 times in the last week. My 6 month old daughter really enjoys the bold, bright and simple drawings and the excellent textures on each page. This book and the others in the series are extremely well made - sturdy and not as 'edible' as other baby books my daughter has tasted! The textured patches are generous and easy for a baby who is getting to grips with had eye co ordination, to touch. Plus the story satisfying and fun. I have bought this book for all my friends babies too!
Perfect present for really small kids (and their parents), 21 Mar 2003
I haven't even got any kids but first saw this book at the house of a friend - we almost took it home we loved it so muhc! Since then I have bought these for all my friends with kids and each time they have been a big, big success - so much so that we have gone international and taken them to friends in Israel and the USA. In fact, they are perfect for expat kids.

If Dinosaurs were Alive Today, 08 Oct 2007
`IF DINOSAURS WERE ALIVE TODAY'...A DINOSAUR READ WITH A DIFFERENCE
Deadly or friendly...what would dinosaurs be like in our world today? The life of these fascinating creatures is presented in a totally original way in an extraordinary new book `If Dinosaurs were Alive Today'.
The book, developed by independent children's publisher ticktock and written by renowned dinosaur authority Dougal Dixon, opens the door to reveal how our natural world would look if the biggest creatures ever to have lived had not been wiped out 65 million years ago. The reader is taken on a dramatically visual journey across oceans, skies, and land to catch a modern-day look at a subject that has fascinated for over two centuries.
"`If Dinosaurs were Alive Today' is introducing people to dinosaurs and how they would have lived in a totally original fashion," explains Dougal, who has written approximately 170 dinosaur books. "I have always believed that presenting factual material in a novel or fictional context underlines it and makes it more accessible and easier for people to understand."
This unique book features an extensive range of dinosaur interaction scenarios using the imagery of photo-realistic dinosaurs blended with distinctive photography, and is supported with detailed facts containing the most up-to-date dinosaur data.
Anne-Marie Ryan from the Natural History Museum, said: "Jaw dropping scenes of a Tyrannosaur terrorising a herd of wild cattle,...and a pride of lions getting the better of a fearsome looking Ceratosaurus really get you imagining what dinosaurs might be like if they were still around today...The further you delve into this book the more intrigued you become."
Professor Richard Moody from The Dinosaur Society, found it well written, beautifully illustrated and carefully thought out, adding: "Facts pour off the pages and the sections on ocean dwellers, such as Ichthyosaurs and Plesiosaurs, flying reptiles, and dinosaur science, are most informative. Big Questions [in the book] is a must read for all those inquisitive dinosaur hunters worldwide!"

Some of the dot to dot pictures are quite simple but some are large and complex with more than 80 dots. For me, the best bit of the whole book is a key page at the end showing, naming and giving the correct pronunciation for 38 dinosaurs - after all these years I now know how to pronounce diplodocus.
brilliant book!!a must have!!, 20 Jan 2006

EXCELLENT, 31 Oct 2005
Our 3 year old son loves to look at this brilliant book and attempt to pronounce the names of the different dinosuars featured. He is fascinated by the pictures and is interested in listening to the description as it is not to long. A must for a young dinosaur lover!
A very good introduction for children, 20 May 2005
This book is a very good introduction for children to the world of Dinosaurs. Each page has about 5 sentences of text, a big drawing of the dinosaur and a scale drawing which shows how big the dinosuar is compared with a person. My daughter loves this book!

I am not a paleontologist (obviously). I am not, truth be told, even a dinosaur fanatic. What I am is a reader who is always looking to extend my knowledge base on interesting subjects, and this dinosaur encyclopedia fulfills that quest in spades!
Everything you could ever want to know about dinosaurs -- all types, all genuses, all sizes and shapes and colors -- is detailed, extensively, within the pages of DINOSAURS. There are wonderful illustrations by Luis V. Rey, timelines, graphs, rock cycles, detailed drawings of skeletons -- you name it, and this book has it. With an appendix that includes a 48-page Dinosaur Genus List and a Glossary of hundreds of terms, this is pretty much the only encyclopedia on dinosaurs that you're ever going to need.
I'm sure that some scientifically-minded people will yearn to find something that is missing, and they may even find it. But for the general dinosaur lover, this is definitely the book to add to your collection. Although the reading level is too advanced for younger children, those over the age of eight will find plenty to keep them interested and entertained.
DINOSAURS is highly recommended for classroom and home libraries, or as the perfect present for that dinosaur crazy kid on your gift list.

Became an instant favourite with my nephew, 20 Mar 2007
This book is intended for three-year-olds; my nephew is a bright boy, and I got it for his fourth birthday, which I felt was a bit of a risk, especially as his mother, the married sister, had been telling me that he has to have books for five-year-olds to keep him occupied. In fact it was an instant success and now is one of his favourite books: he has to have it read to him nearly every day. This morning, during her visit to the ancestral home, his grandfather read it to him, then was made to act out the whole story with toy dinosaurs, and then I had to read it to him and act it all out as well! He was already fond of the Little Red Train books, but this is a step above them and definitely something special. As the illustrations are extremely detailed, it's also fun for the knowledgeable adult to identify the Cretaceous creatures illustrated. My nephew can already recognise plesiosaurs and monkey-puzzle trees: I saw placodonts, proganochelids, two kinds of pterosaur, two kinds of ceratopsians, belemnites, coelacanths, icthyosaurs, sauropods, hadrosaurs, the marine crocodile Metriorhynchus, bennittitales, magnolias and many other interesting things.
A beautifully illustrated children's dinosaur story with a realistic jurassic feel., 11 Dec 2006
Wow! What a discovery - a children's dinosaur picture book with beautiful detailed illustrations depicting a Jurassic (or is it Triassic?) age. Benedict Blathwayt is a genius at illustrating, as his success with the Little Red Train series shows, and my children would be very pleased if this was the first of a dinosaur set. The dinosaurs look real, though perfectly pitched for 2-6s as not-too-scary, and they chase through hot dry vegetation, a lagoon (with a great cut-through underwater picture) and off a cliff. It is then that Fin the small dinosaur, who is being chased by bigger ones, discovers the power of flight. This is probably a historic moment in evolutionary biology and the book could teach a wonderful lesson about the evolution of birds from dinosaurs. A simpler lesson that could be drawn is the straightforward one - everyone has a special talent for something and bigger is not necessarily better etc. However my boys (2&4) are happy just marvelling at the pictures and enjoying the straightforward chase story. Encore!
