I was given this book when i started my HND theatre costume design book. We have used it for two years and i can not recommened it highly enough! Some of the girls in my class had never done pattern cutting before and this book tells you everything you need to know. On first glance it seems very confusing. But when you read it and follow it step by step it all makes sense! The blocks shown in this book are basic blocks from which you can adapt or alter to suit you.

Basic pattern making that can be adapted to most designs, 15 Mar 2008
I brought this book a few years ago now, the actual price and place escapes me. I had wanted to learn to make my own patterns as I was finding the shop ones rather tedious.
I was originally a home sewer and just made things for my family with no pattern cutting experience at all, and to be honest, very little general knowledge of patterns.
When the book arrived I really didn't understand it, and it got left on the shelf for a few months. I then decided to get my head around patterns and started. The basic bodice drafting it based on a numbers and points system, and each of those is determined by the relevant measurement on the body - a calculator really helps here.
Once the basic bodice has been drawn it can be made it to any of the shapes included in the book. Once you've mastered moving darts, most of it is easy to follow. The same applies to trouers and sleeves, although this book doesn't go into the designer elements, and is mainly pictures rather than instructions, a fashion design book would go very well with this book.
I have found the most useful part of the book to be the evening wear and lingerie part, which has enabled me to start designing my own evening wear for profit.
Once you've finished your basic blocks there is also a little section on how to size your patterns, so you don't have to re-draft each size. This is a little complicated to get your head around, but once you've got it, it's a breeze.
There's also size charts inlcuded for sizes 8-32. Although I've crossed mine out to be sizes 6-30 respectively, not because these sizes aren't correct, but I have found for example when making a size 14 to the measurements in the book, it will fit someone who would wear a size 12 in the highstreet, a bit confusing, but it works better for me that way.
Overall I would say this is a great book, although perhaps not for the new sewer!
A good starter, 10 Jun 2006
This book is a good starter but there are many printing errors (wrong instructions, missing instructions) so beware. It also assumes that you are familiar with some pattern cutting techniques. If you are an absolute beginner it would be useful to have someone in the know to ask as at times it is possible to become absolutely stuck. If you are studying pattern cutting this would be a really useful book to have. If you are learning by yourself, you may find this book to be a little frustrating.
Worth the learning curve, 28 Nov 2002
I found this book difficult to use at first, being used to commercial pre-printed patterns, but with a bit of perseverance I was able to produce some well-fitted pieces that I was quite pleased with. I particularly liked the section on dealing with bodies of different shapes (sloping shoulders, long backs etc). I would recommend this book to anyone wanting the flexibility to design their own clothes.

i am currently in the process of gaining my diploma in fashion and textiles at the nelson polytechnic NEW ZEALAND this tome will aid you in designing fashion garments while realising that pattern cutting is an artform.

Excellent if you are not quite decided yet, 04 Jun 2007
What a great book! If you are thinking about doing a degree in fashion design, this is the perfect book to help you decide realistically if this is for you or not. Despite concentrating on the syllabus of a typical fashion design degree it still gives an amazing amount of information regarding many different things.
This is not a how-to-sew book, but if you are thinking about fashion design this book will prepare you and let you know what to expect from a degree.
It has a modern layout and is beautifully and generously illustrated with many pictures. I picked it up expecting a book describing the course, but it is so much more and is a wonderful and fascinating read, taking you through every step of fashion design.
Deciding on a college, history of fashion, the manufactoring process of fabrics, fashion illustration, basic principles of design, colours, fibres, altering a toile, tailoring, the portfolio, the runway - this book covers it all. It touches almost all aspects and gives bite-size introductions to all of them!
Plus at the back is large selection of website links to guide you further.
Basically, if you think about studying fashion design you need to get this book. :)
Amazing!!, 29 May 2005

I was little bit sceptical to buy this book because of the cover, which I didn't like. But the content is awesome! I am very happy that I bought it. It looks like every topic is covered in this book with good color illustrations and photos. It's stylish, modern and sexy. Great value for money.
Insides and outs of "Fashion design", 15 Nov 2002
Its an excellent book for design students who are aiming at working their way up the ladder to sucess as a fashion designer. The book acts like a manual you can keep refurring to on any aspects of fashion design eg. how to do good fashion drawings, how to construct a toile, how the fashion world works and much more. The book even goes to the extent of how to get your work noticed as well as a whole list of places to buy everything you can possibly imagine for designing and making clothes.

This book has some useful tips, but I found the photographs used unappealing and over the top. (Some of the window displays shown would look better on a pantomime set.) It might work for trendy fashion boutiques, but I would not recommend this book to any retailer who actually wants to show the public what they stock in a practical way.

I first ordered this book on the 11th Oct 2007 and was told by Amazon that it would be delivered at the end of Oct 2007 which was fine. The end of October came and I recieved an email saying that there had been a delay and I would be recieving the book by the end of November 2007. This was an inconvienience but something which I was prepared to happen. The end of November came and I recieved another email, this time saying that there was further delay and that the book would be dispatched on the 26th April 2008, over 5 months after the orignal order date. I found this service appauling considering I could have went to the shop and got it there and then. I wont be ordering from this site in the future as I have lost all faith in the company and the lack of customer service is disgusting! I dont think the 1 satr rating is deserved as the guy who wrote it is a lecturer of mine, the 1 star is purely for services rendered.....or not.

Amazing!!, 29 May 2005
This book is amazing and if you are set to study fashion design then BUY IT!! It tells you everything you want and need to know about fashion designing and a career path in fashion design so you can easily refer to it with any questions you need answering!! you cant be without it!!

Some useful tips..., 03 Nov 2008
This book has some useful tips, but I found the photographs used unappealing and over the top. (Some of the window displays shown would look better on a pantomime set.) It might work for trendy fashion boutiques, but I would not recommend this book to any retailer who actually wants to show the public what they stock in a practical way.
One word.....fabulous, 23 Jun 2008
As a retail interior designer, this book is a must for those coming up the ranks to understand world wide retail concepts....
If you want a fresh, modern approach to VM this is the book for you... whilst there are other more established writers out there, Morgan has a 21st century approach to VM, fit for a modern world. Its simplistic, stylish approach is just what you need... when is the coffee table version out?
Same book ???, 23 Jun 2008
I am afraid i disagree with Julie Peel on her opinion of this book.It is a totally freshing , modern 21st century viewpoint using world wide examples of exemplary V.M.I have found it both informative and inspiring and i would thoroughly recommend it to all with an interest in this subject.

The book I have been waiting for!, 15 May 2008
Of all the books that have been published on visual merchandising this is without a doubt the best I have read. The author has covered the whole gamut of this creative and difficult subject in an easy to read and student friendly format.

Fabulous book on Pattern Cutting/Making, 19 Nov 2008
I like this book very much. It's got everything (and more) that a pattern design/cutting book should have. The only thing I would add or change about this book is the fact that it's not in the metric system, but in the imperial system. Great textbook for anyone who wants to learn pattern cutting/design.
Finally I understand!, 25 Sep 2008
I am a little surprised about the comments that this book is not for a beginner. I have never understood pattern-making despite reading other books, having it explained to me in words of one-syllable etc. Finally I get it - this book couldn't have explained it in a more basic way if it had started off with the words "This is a needle - the thread goes in the end with the hole......" Since reading this book I have successfully drafted a full set of basic patterns that actually fit me, and I have made several items that also actually fit me. If you want to learn how to make your own patterns, adapt existing patterns, understand why things don't fit and put it right etc etc, buy this book first!
Wow - what a book!, 15 Sep 2008
Worth every penny - like other reviewers I've bought libraries - this replaces the lot! And the 4th edition does include how to draft slopers for your sizes too - which undoes my only reservation when I bought the book based on other reviews.
Already made a childs waistcoat and a dress (D&G copy) using the pattern drafting techniques in here, and both are a perfect fit. Will save me a fortune in the long run (no more buying patterns) and takes less time to draft from scratch than to alter the ready made patterns.
Hoorah!
Expensive - but worth every penny, 30 Dec 2007
I have spent many months looking longingly at this book before taking the plunge and buying it, even with the amazon discount it is still a lot of money for a book. But what a book! The author demonstrates how to adapt basic blocks to create your own styles - perfect!
She does not show you how to construct the garments though so this is not a book for the beginner. The chapter on children's wear is inspiring me to make my own kids clothes with additional fahoin features not found on commercial patterns.
Although this book is aimed at the fashion design student, it is of great value to the experienced home sewer who wants to do more than just follow a commercial pattern.
Wow,Wow, Wow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!, 12 Jul 2004
I have searched far and wide, bought booookkkks, i mean a whole library of books on pattern making, but t his one stands out!!!! I mean i made a pair of pants that fitted, i didnt even have to make a mock up from the pattern. Though quite expensive i have no complaints at all. Its value for money. I will surely more of Helen's books! Word of warning though,....i dont think this book is for a complete beginner! It doesnt teach you how to build the bodice block from scratch!
