basic but well loved, 28 Aug 2008
My 15 month old boy loves this book mainly because he loves opening flaps! We vary between this and the 'Where's Spot' book (where the flaps are easier to spot). He never seems to tire of them!
Interactive Story, 08 Aug 2008
This book is wonderful with lift up flaps and a simple story which delighted my son as a toddler. Even now we like to look at the book and lift the flaps. I would recommend this book to any toddler, its wonderful.
Great for babies AND parents!, 23 Mar 2008
This is our 4 month old son's favourite book, as indicated by his rapt attention and animated arm and leg waving on certain pages. All the pages have bold colours, and the small amount of text on each page has a rhythmic quality that makes it enjoyable to read aloud and keeps little'n engrossed. He particularly likes the lion page, although this might be in part due to his dad (me) performing a load "Roar!" at this point. I'll update review when our son is old enough to read it himself.
My son's first and favourite, 18 Mar 2008
I first heard the story told on Cbeebies story time. I re-enacted it much to my son's amusement and we bought the book at the earliest opportunity. Its a great book with a simply premise- several pets are sent by the zoo and all are unsuitable until the last one "he was perfect. I kept him". Its a lift the flap book with just enough text to keep their attention on each page. The illustrations are simple and bold and the book presents opportunities to talk about proportions and appearances and of course, to make funny animal noises. My son, in his enthusiasm, has wrecked the first one we bought him and we are going to have to buy a new one. That's how much he loves it. Since this book, he has really learnt to enjoy books as a one to one activity with me, which makes me really happy.
Excellent. , 11 Dec 2007
This was a book given to my daughter for her first birthday. It was a favourite for a long time and has done a lot for promoting her language development. The pictures are lovely. The book is sturdy and unlike some flap books, they do not easily pull off.

Worth the expense of going for the hardcover/board version, 07 Oct 2008
This much-loved classic is my 10-month old boy's favourite. We deliberately went for the hardback version with board pages, which is capable of withstanding the inevitable bashing it receives better than the paperback version. (The flaps are thin card - hardly indestructible but sturdy enough to require some considerable effort to tear.)
Like the review above, I was mildly concerned about the repetition of the word "no" throughout the book, but that's just how the book is and the most important thing is that my son loves interacting with it, always attacking each flap with gusto to see what's underneath it, and that's the most important thing really.
flimsy flaps, 27 Sep 2008
I bought this several months ago for my little boy, who is now 16 months old. Although he loves his books, bringing me a book to read to him several times during the day, this has never been one of his favourites. Despite that, this is the only "lift-the-flap" book that he has managed to tear off one of the flaps from (and he has several of these books). I guess that babies have different tastes in books (just like adults) but I think it could have been made a lot sturdier. For example, we have had no problems with "Dear Zoo" which has been read a lot more times.
well loved.. but.., 28 Aug 2008
My 15 month old boy loves this book and never tires of opening the flaps.. The only slight issue I have is that it contains a lot of 'no's' in it. That is how the book runs of course as he's looking for spot in the cupboard, under the bed etc saying 'is he under the bed?' and some animal will be under the flap saying 'no'. Of course that's the way of the book, but i'm just conscious of it being in the negative state throughout for some reason, and affirming 'no' every time my boy lifts a flap.
Where's SPOT lift-the-flap book, 24 Jan 2008
from Eric Hill.
This review is for the PUFFIN paperback, lift-the-flap version/1983.
22 thick, shiny pages in the popular 2-page spread format.
Large, bold, easy-to-follow text on one page and a picture and a lift-the flap opportunity on the other.
9 sturdy flaps ensure successful lifting/replacing, time and time again.
Colourfully illustrated throughout.
In this story, naughty Spot is being elusive, at dinner time, and his Mum (Sally) has to go and seek him out!
The delightful story is enhanced by the various creatures hidden behind the flaps who aid the lovable Spot by responding `No!' to the question asked....until the last page, when all is revealed!
From the back cover:-
`SPOT is one of the essential experiences of childhood' - Parent Magazine.'
One of the best series of books for early readers!
A Wonderful Find!, 02 Nov 2007
I bought this for my 10 month old daughter, and now at nearly two years of age she still loves having it read to her. A wonderful lift the flap book which lets the little ones really get involved in the story, which features a bear, snake, hippo, lion, monkey, crocodile, penguins and a tortoise. The popularity of this board book has led to the purchase of other 'Spot' books.

my baby's favourite book from 9 months old, 30 May 2008
I introduced my daughter to this book a month ago when she was 9 months old, and it is by far her favourite book. She crawls over to it and lobs other books out of the way to get to it, and then happily sits turning the pages and opening and closing the flaps, she can't get enough of it no matter what time of day it is, although we also read it every night before bed as well. We've had to buy a second copy as I know she's going to tear something soon, but to date it has withstood her vigorous opening/closing/page turning! I would highly recommend it.
fun for any time, 20 Feb 2008
I agree with other reviewers about the lack of durability, We have had it only a few days and the tabs have had some heavy wear and tear already, despite me being on hand to show our enthusiastic 2 year old how to do them "carefully!!". The story is a bit random until you get into it a few times but the illustrations are so busy and lively that there is lots to talk about on every page. The tabs are great fun, and it is definately proving a big favourite already.
Great book but not very durable, 19 Jan 2008
This is very popular in our household (two 3-year-olds and a 2-year-old), but unfortunately the pull-out tabs are not made to withstand enthusiastic toddlers for long! We're now investing in a replacement, which I try to avoid doing as I want the girls to learn to look after their books, but this is natural wear and tear rather than malicious damage. They also like Tickle Book and Christmas Bear by the same authors, but this one is the best - they particularly like the revolting dishes offered in the restaurant!
A marvellous book with a few drawbacks, 29 Nov 2007
My 4 year old son has loved this book since he was 2. The poetry is zany ("there's a lizard in a blizard and it's fun to be outside, but bedtime's creeping closer, who will you ask for a ride?"), the illustrations are interesting and detailed. There are lots of flaps to lift, tabs to pull and twist and such interactive devices are always a hit with children.
I would sound a couple of notes of caution though. The pulling tabs aren't especially strong and a few on our book broke within a couple of months, despite my son being as careful as possible with them.
Also, this book is aimed at bedtime which we try to make a quiet and settling time. The last pages of this book contain a crunchy crocodile looking for toes to bite, a bear looking for a grrrrreat big squeeze and the "ticklemetoo" monkey. All these elements beg hysteria-inducing rough and tumble rather than sleepy settling. I challenge any parent to find a calming way to read the bit about the "ticklemetoo" monkey!
Overall a lovely book, but a touch too fragile and boisterous for bedtime.
Endless happy bedtimes, 24 Nov 2005
I have a 2 year old son and he loves this book. I love it too, it's one of my favourites to read to him. There's a lot of participation involved and loads of excellent rhymes! It's a bedtime hit, with it being read generally more than once a night!

Every little girl should have this book - it is fabulous, my girls spend hours playing with it. We have bought it as a present for most of their friends and they love it too.
My Fairy Princess Palace, 22 Sep 2005
This book opens out into a fantastic 360 degree princess palace with staircases, doors, furniture and stand up card figures. This was bought as a present for my daughter and although not really a story book, it has provided my two daughters (ages 3 and 6) with hours of fun. I have since bought it as a gift for others.

My Fairy Princess Palace, 13 Jul 2007
Every little girl should have this book - it is fabulous, my girls spend hours playing with it. We have bought it as a present for most of their friends and they love it too.
My Fairy Princess Palace, 22 Sep 2005
This book opens out into a fantastic 360 degree princess palace with staircases, doors, furniture and stand up card figures. This was bought as a present for my daughter and although not really a story book, it has provided my two daughters (ages 3 and 6) with hours of fun. I have since bought it as a gift for others.
unacceptable stereotypical functionalist nonsense, 08 Nov 2008
As a pre-school teacher I urge you never to read this book in your setting again. It perpetuates the belief that men go to work and women stay at home to shop and cook and childcare. Reading this book to children perpetuates a stereotypical outdated image of both family life and individual roles within a family based on gender, and reading it to children sends powerful messages to them about what roles they will be expected to fulfill later in life. Rip it up and throw it away lest you construct children of tomorrow subject to the same limitations based on gender that we are today. Think hard about how you use language in your setting to construct the norms of childhood and challenge all members of staff to be vigilant when using language and reading stories. NEVER EVER READ THIS STORY TO CHILDREN AGAIN
Great book, 19 Oct 2008
I remember this book from when I was younger and had to buy it for my daughter. It was as good as I remember. My daughter asked so many questions about it and really used her imagination.
A Wonderful Re-discovery, 25 Sep 2008
I recently bought this for my daughter after spotting it in Marks and Spencers. I earned a few strange looks with my mini squeal of delight, but nevermind! I had completely forgotton about this book until seeing it again, and the memories flooded back as I read the story to my daugher. The simple story will delight any child, but for me, the drawings made the book. A must!!
Delight to my grandchildren, 25 Sep 2008
I have read this book to my 3 grandchildren time and again and still they are not tired of it - aged 5yrs and 2yrs - the 5year old having heard it since he was 2yrs 'pretends' not to be listening as his brother and cousin have it read to them but he's definitely paying attention!!
The ridiculousness (if that is a word) of the story is lovable and causes many smiles and OH'S - for some reason the scene of mess left behind always brings an Ooh and Ahh as Mummy has to clean up. The favourite picture is tiger pouring the tea down him from the pot!
a great tradition yet quirky book, 07 Jul 2008
my two sons aged 3 and a half and aged 15 months both sit in awe of this book! there is a traditional feel with the mummy making this fantasic tea which she is happy to share with this stranger at the door - a tiger! then there is the crazy element that you would let a tiger into your house - the tiger never roars at all and amazingly my very vocal boys never roar when they see him in this book as he is a friendly tiger.
this book is simply great, a must have for parents and children.

basic but well loved, 28 Aug 2008

Lovely story, 06 Feb 2008
We found this tale of Fox and his search for his clothes lovely and useful. The story is fun. The length of the story and content seems just the right appeal for toddlers (I have a 18m old ) to get interested in learning clothes & then 'getting dressed' too. The lengh of the book seems good for us so that it stays interesting (and usually we like to read it again!). We love 'lift the flap' books too & 'finding the clothes' in this one is fun. Fantastic, 07 Jun 2007
My daughter adores this book. I know it off by heart and she delights in showing me every time we read this where her head is when we get to find fox's hat! My daughter loves this book., 13 Dec 2004
My 20 month old daughter loves this book. She enjoys the main story and also takes great delight in pointing out the numerous interesting items contained within the pictures. The ducks are her favourite so it's fortunate there's plenty of them! On the downside, my wife and I are beginning to get a bit bored after several hundred readings! Fox's Socks is read 10 times a day in our house!, 22 Oct 2000
My 1 year old loves lift-the-flap books, and for some reason this one has particularly caught his attention. The illustrations are beautiful and the tale endearing, which means parents won't get tooo bored at having to read it at least ten times a day! Its also a nice introduction to rhyming verse, and I think the lilting cadence of your voice whilst reading it may be another reason for its popularity

Beautiful Beyond Words. Sheer Genius., 17 Nov 2008
This is absolutely a must have book. The book is very large and there are six magical HUGE pop out creations which absolutely jump out of the page like magic. Think intricate origami or the best pop up you could imagine. On each of the main pages there is also a pop up book with text within the book, this time with smaller but still mind numbingly amazing pop ups some with moving parts. The paper on the white rabbits ears are felted, utensils are foil and shiny; there is such great attention to detail on a small and grand scale.
The text is thorough and true to Lewis Carroll's story so it is more a read to your child book than one you can let them play with. An adult will also need to turn the pages and supervise to avoid damaging the book. It's sturdy but bits could be ripped by a small child.
If you ever wanted to inspire a childs love of books this is the book to get.
Buy it!
Probably the best I have ever seen, 28 Feb 2008
This is quite possibly the most meticulously detailed and expertly crafted pop-up book I have ever seen. As Christmas gifts for my other two kids I have also bought Sabuda's pop-up "Encyclopedia Prehistorica" and Nowiki's first two books from the series "Why Some Cats are Rascals" - a charming, motivational story with a lot of information from the world of felines. Product Description
The Bad-Tempered Ladybird is another beautifully illustrated picture book by Eric Carle. At the start of the story a friendly ladybird is eating a breakfast of aphids on a leaf, when it is joined by a very bad-tempered ladybird who also wants to eat the aphids, but refuses to share. The bad-tempered ladybird then proceeds to pick a fight with every animal he meets, never satisfied that they are big enough to fight. As the story progresses, the animals get bigger and bigger and this would be a good story to discuss the concept of size with a young child. The book is cleverly laid out and as the animals get bigger, so to do the pages. The illustrations in this book are of the usual high standard expected from Eric Carle. This book would also be excellent for consolidating a child's understanding of time, as at the top of each page it shows a clock face with the time that the bad-tempered ladybird meets each animal. Finally, the bad-tempered ladybird arrives back where it started and is now prepared to share the aphids with the friendly ladybird. The story ends happily with the ladybirds helping the leaf by eating the aphids and both ladybirds going to sleep, as the fireflies come out to dance around the moon. This book would be suitable for children aged 4-7 years old. --Amanda York

basic but well loved, 28 Aug 2008

NEVER EVER READ THIS STORY TO CHILDREN AGAIN Great book, 19 Oct 2008
It is my daughter's "special book" and can only be browsed with Mummy or Daddy at her side - basically because it is an absolute masterpiece, plus it delights both adults and children alike. Though the story is obviously abridged, it is still very detailed and makes the ultimate bedtime story - a page a night perhaps.

A lot of fun and a lesson, 30 Aug 2008
A great book, more worthwhile than many thanks to its amusingly negative protagonist (the ladybird) and universal lesson about the importance of sharing.
didn't think the message was good for young children, 09 Mar 2008
Bought this book for my pre-school group, the ladybird is not only bad tempered but wants to fight every creature he mets. I don't want to promote fighting or violence so this book has only been read twice.I was very disapointed because other eric carle book are Fab.
disappointed, 25 Jun 2007
I bought this book for my 6 year old niece after reading the reviews posted, but I was very disappointed.I showed it to my husband and my 23 year old daughter and they too felt that it was not suitable for my niece. I couldn't see what the moral of this story was as it seemed to promote a confrontational aspect of life, which I felt not right for a child of 6. I bought the tiniest mermaid and she loved it
Perfect, 23 Apr 2007
I loved this book as a child and now my 5 year old and almost 2 year old love it too. It is timeless, and with the animals getting ever larger along with the text very clever too. It is also a good early teacher of the concept of time with the Bad Tempered Ladybird meeting each different animal at 'something' O'clock.
Enjoyable for reader and child, 12 Feb 2007
My 6 year old son was offered this book last year, and we both still enjoy reading this fun and morally relevant story. As the scenario repeats itself over the pages with different animals, the child quickly picks it up and joins in to act the bad tempered ladybird. An happy end rounds it up perfectly. I recommand it for 4 year olds to young readers.
