This book presents a series of very honest and candid portraits of Brazilian transsexuals. One of the subjects is interviewed at the start of the book, but other than that there is no text. As such, it is left to the reader to intrepret each portrait. For anyone who thinks that the transsexual condition is best represented by glamorous "showgirls", this book tells a different story.

A poor quality book, 20 Aug 2006
This is a waste of money, the information in this book could be gained on any web site. The book is poor quality, having been done on a photocopyer, many pages are on the slant with words missing off the top of the page, a real rough copy, for this price I would have expected something far better quality. The information is poor and some of it may even be out of date. Dont waste your money, I am supprised that they call this a book, its more of a pamflet, and grossly overpriced.

A book for the Academic reader, 11 Jan 2004
I found this a very informative read, with lots of information on gender types as percieved by medicine, philosophy and psychology along with the prejudice of society towards non-conformist groups. The author unfortunatly does go on a little (in some parts) re-stating certain naratives. It goes a long way in defining the differences between transvestites, crossdressers, transsexuals and the gay community. This is not a book about homosexuals, it is a book about transgendered people, that if you read it, will educate you. There are a fair few statistics and lots of academic jargan (which is fine) as I am a psychology student at university; I found this extreemly helpful and would recommend it to anyone who is willing to learn more about transgenderism. All in all I would have to say read it folks, some of the stories the author relates will have you in tears, others laughing and still others will leave you in amazement.
