Fab intro to a fab series of books, 13 Oct 2008
Hairy Maclary from Donaldson's Dairy is the ideal starter book to this fab series. Its pretty basic compared to some of the later offerings and introduces us to a lot of the characters with its charming rhyming prose. Characters such as "Bottomley Potts, covered in spots" (a dalmation) and "Schnitzel Von-Krumm with the very low tum" (a dachund)(excuse the spelling!). And how could we forget "Scarface Claw" - the toughest tom cat in town, whom my 3 year old is currently totally potty about to the point that he's demanded more books featuring Scarface Claw for Christmas (and its only October). Thankfully he won't be disappointed as there are other books in the series featuring this tough tom cat, including a book dedicated to Scarface Claw himself! Overall I think Hairy Maclary is a brilliant read which will be enjoyed night after night by child AND parent. Some books can become monotonous to read over and over but I haven't yet tired of reading this one to my son who always waits in anticipation until Scarface Claw jumps out of the shadows. He enjoys joining with with the loud MEEEEOOOOOOOOOOOOW and also enjoys reciting the final "to bed" at the end. I can't rate this book highly enough. Go buy it ... NOW!
Absolutley brilliant, 08 Jul 2008
My son got a set of these books bought for his birthday and this is his absolute favourite. He is only 2 but he joins in with the actions and certain areas of the book are a highlight for him (where the cat jumps out) I can now read this book without looking after reading it so many times.
I would definitley recommend this for all children - a must have for your library at home!
It'll never be left idyling on the bookshelf....., 26 Nov 2007
My 2 year old absolutely loved this booked from the first time I read it to her. With the rythmic style, tongue-twisting words, great story and wonderful fun, she was laughing with delight sitting still gripped with anticipation. She knows the book off by heart and I've read it so many times, so do I. She particularly loves Scarface Claw! In fact her reaction to this particular book led me to buy all of the Lynley Dodd books in the range! This will definitely be THE book I remember from my daughter's early childhood. So whether it's for your child or someone else's, you've just go to do it.... buy it... it'll never be left idyling on the bookshelf.
Fantastic!!, 01 Dec 2006
This book is an absolute must for every child.....and parent for that matter.
I first read Hairy Maclary to my little brother over 15 years ago and have been given it as a gift for my 1 year old. She thinks that it is fab and loves Scarface Claw - The toughest Tom in Town. The rythmn of the book is great and I have to agree with everyone else who says that it is perfect for bedtime.
Fabulous!, 16 Jul 2006
I started reading Hairy Maclary to my son when he was 6 months old. He is now 3 and it is still a firm favourite - a great achievement I think!

What a delight., 24 Aug 2008
This book is just a wonderful collection of such charming stories. My eldest son is nearly 6 years and a fairly prolific reader but we have struggled to find books with enough words to challenge him but age appropriate storylines. Having not read Winnie the Pooh as a child myself I was a little sceptical but the stories are wonderful. The humour is gentle, the stories a delight, the text beautifully written. My eldest reads the book to himself, I read it to his younger brother. In short, we love it.
Fab for little ones... not for me, 18 May 2008
Meet the adorable, ponderous Pooh Bear; the cute, funny, little Piglet; the bouncy, lovable Tigger and everyone else who reside in the Hundred Acre Wood in this fabulous book with fabulous short stories about these fabulous characters' adventures.
As a little child I never really liked Winnie the Pooh but now, I am 10, I think it is great. I am not too fond of the Disney one but the one by AA Milne is great! I love EH Shepard's illustrations which really make the book lovely. I think this book was worth every penny - a real delight to read, especially at bedtime!
I love the story about when Piglet's home was floating because of the terrible rainstorm and it is ingenious how his friends get him back to land.
wonderful cast, delightful book, 08 Mar 2002
Judi Dench, Michael Williams, Stephen Fry et al obviously really enjoyed producing this dramatisation of Winnie the Pooh. It has been listened to over and over by our 2 year old, who fits all sorts of Pooh-isms into her developing conversation! - it's a lovely set of tapes, ideal for the car and a story you get more out of as you get older - without it being beyond the reach of little ones. If you like Winnie-the-Pooh, this cast does it well.
very insightful!, 25 Apr 2001
This book, never read as a young person (nor to me), has proven to be an invaluable source of insight into a lot of areas. In a world governed by numerous self-help books and alike, this book no doubt serves as solid and long-standing. l would have loved to have had this read to me as a child, l recommend every adult to read it, and then read it to their children.

Lovely book and CD, 13 Apr 2008
This is a lovely book and CD. My baby daughter has enjoyed me singing them to her and I'm sure she'll love singing them when she's older. The rhymes are all in order as on the CD (except the first one - Here we go round the Mulberry Bush)and Mum can read the words (as I didn't remember any nursery rhymes!!!). Well recommended.
Nice book, nice music, 17 Jan 2008
The book is good quality, has some good rhymes and nice designs.
The CD is also high quality, with pleasant voices, good music and nice sound effects. My only complaint is that the CD rhyme order is completely different to the order of the rhymes in the book. This means that if someone wants to learn the rhymes they need to constantly look at the index trying to find the page of the next rhyme that comes up. It's actually very annoying and a pity such a big flaw exists in an otherwise great product.
Wonderful CD to accompany a great book, 09 Dec 2007
I've heard so many ropey CD compilations of children's nursery rhymes. This one uses only acoustic instruments and is pleasant to listen too. The illustrations in the book are great and the rhymes have my children miming the actions and singing along.

Excellent for bedtimes, 20 Aug 2007
My eldest enjoyed this from the age of about 18 months upwards. It is a nice gentle read for bedtime. The only drawback is that it has many mythical creatures, which required some explanation (Mummy, what's a ghost?).
Our favourite bedtime read, 12 Feb 2002
My 2 year old son, who never sits still, sat transfixed when this was read on children's tv. I then purchased it and in fact it has been read so often that we no longer need the book. Grandpa, Mummy and George all know it off by heart. The beautiful illustrations and wonderful rhythm of the story make this a magical read for toddlers. Mike Inkpen is a national treasure.
Great book to read, funny and easy to teach the words to, 31 Jan 2002
My two year old loves this book, and can recite some pages off after only having it read three times. It is funny, and disperses myths of horrible giants, trolls, ghosts and goblins, by adding humour and friendship to them. My daughter can remember all the animals in the wood and their noises. She will insist on singing "LullabyeLullabyeOOO" though, another very good Mick Inkpen book, he writes in a way that children understand..also read "Nothing" another excellent book
princess's bedtime story, 20 Aug 2001
my two little girls (ages 4 and 2) have a passion for all things princessy, and this makes a delightful, funny alternative to the usual collection of cinderellas and ballerinas. the little princess is very cute and curly and we all roar with laughter as we try to make snoring noises at the end. a huge hit, got it out from the library time and again and at last we have a copy of our own.
The best ever bedtime book!, 20 Aug 2001
I bought this book for my 2 year old and she loves it! The vocabulary and repeated phrases draw young children into the story. Mick Inkpen's usual exciting illustrations complete this wonderful bedtime book.

I bought this tape for my daughter who is (at time of writing) 2 yrs and 2 months old, and is already a Tweenies fan. When I listened to it myself, I was a little concerned that perhaps she might be a bit too young to appreciate it, but I needn't have worried. I've been playing it for her the last couple of evenings when she has come out of the bath and is getting dried off and into her pyjamas, and she loves it. Given her age, she can't follow all the stories and songs word for word, but that doesn't matter - they have all appeared on the TV shows, and she's familiar with all the character voices, so even though she's only 2 she joins in and laughs at the funny bits! Her favourite at the moment is "Old MacDonald's Farm" (especially going "boing" when Milo says there is a Kangaroo there). So, I can recommend this for under 3's as well as the slightly older age group this is probably aimed at, and I will certainly be purchasing one or two of the other tapes in the series, as this one has gone down so well.

Recommended, 26 Oct 2001
So, I can recommend this for under 3's as well as the slightly older age group this is probably aimed at, and I will certainly be purchasing one or two of the other tapes in the series, as this one has gone down so well.
A timeless classic, both for children and for adults, 01 Jun 2007
The strange thing about Winnie-the-Pooh was that, as a child, I don't remember being a big fan; I was more into Paddington Bear. I bought this book in either my late teens or early twenties, and have loved it ever since. It is a fantastic book - the stories, of course, are funny and light-hearted, but the colour illustrations also add to the delight. The detail is just so sweat - from the map at the very beginning showing where they all live, including Eeyores Gloomy Place, which is 'Rather Boggy and Sad', to where the Woozle Wasnt!
Of course, anyone who has read the stories will know that al of the characters have their own little quirks. Piglet is very small and easily scared; Eeyore is always rather gloomy and sad; Pooh is described as a bear of 'very little brain' who loves nothing more than eating honey; Owl is very wise, etc. Perahps this is why, once you have developed a love for these characters, it rarely leaves you. Even as an adult, you can dip into this book and enjoy the subtle humour and the nuances of the lovable characters Milne created all those years ago.
Still superb stories for young children, 16 Apr 2007
I was constantly haunted by a sense of deja-vu when reading this book to my 5-year-old children. As I read the sentences, I remembered them being read to me as a child, and it was that I realised what an impact these books had made on me. AA Milne's stories are beautifully written: simple, calm, and moving, they seem to speak directly to the feelings and minds of young children like nothing else. Each chapter is self-contained, and just the right length for a bed-time story. I'd recommend reading Winnie the Pooh first before this book, so that the background and characters makes sense. Every child should have these stories read to them!
a much-loved classic revisited, 01 Mar 2007
I can remember reading this as a small child and laughing until it hurt (in the Heffalump story). In places it is very funny, but it's much more than that. Pooh is a most attractive character for a child - cuddly, friendly, not very bright, usually cheerful, a bit silly .... and he is supported, as are all the animals, by the most wonderful, gentle, characterful illustrations by E.H. Shepherd. It seems in a way a shame to analyse why this book (and, of course, its companion 'Winnie the Pooh') is so successful and has lasted so well - tempting just to be grateful that it's there for our children to read, and for us to read to them. But there is an interesting mix of personalities among the animals( bouncy, rather irritating Tigger, cynical Eeyore, reliable but timid Piglet, busy animal-of-affairs Rabbit), the stories are all beautifully crafted, the little rhymes (the 'hums') are immediately memorable and a lot of funny things happen. Put all these things together with the wonderful pictures and add an indefinable 'extra something' and you've got this treasurable book.
Pooh, Eeyore and Tigger. What more do you need?, 27 Aug 2001
One of my favourite books of all time (and im 22 now) and still i read it once in a while. The strength of the book lies in the simplicity of the stories themselves. Eeyore is as gloomy and tragic as ever while Pooh as ever continues along his way appreciating the simple things in life, like using your imagination and hunting woozles and heffalumps. Milne's interpretation of a childhood through toy friends is an excellent parllel with my experiences when younger and his tales are likely to strike a chord with readers of all ages. Rediscovering "pooh sticks" earlier on this year led me to read the book again and i remembered the stunningly unexpected undertones in the last chapter of the book. Piglet, Owl, Pooh, Eeyore, Kanga and Roo all feature, not forgetting the fabulously fun filled feline that is Tigger. A must for a desert island book list.

Great, 21 Mar 2002
This is a great collection of songs, well set to music and with good vocals that don't grate on parents! My toddler loves it and it is great to use for action rhymes as there are load | | |
