This book along with the dark phoenix saga, is a must for any Marvel comic fan.
The art work is rich and the arch of the story is compelling.
I believe that this book, should be rated as highly as Return of the Dark Knight by Frank Miller.
For those who are interested in learning more about what catapulted Wolverine into a genre defining character look no further than this graphic novel.
Woverine at his Best!, 06 Jul 2004
I am a big Wolverine fan and found this book an excellent way to get a bit of depth to the character that we all know and love. Some classic stories skillfully drawn and creatively written. A must for any fan of the ol' canuckle-head!

I've been an X-Men (and especially a Wolverine) fan since the late 80's. Unfortunately, I was never able to find the now classic "Wolverine" mini-series. Not until this book came along. This is really the first comic where the authors explore the human side of the man called Logan. Always considered an animal which thinks with his claws instead of his head, now we see the popular X-man beaten in battle, have his heart broken - only to come back triumphant. This book is a must for all Wolverine fans but I recommend it to those who want to find out what makes this little Canadian tick.

This book shows some stories from 3 famous characters inside the world of M; Wolverine, Black Panther and Captain America.
This a great book which contains 3 very different stories with different styles of artwork and stories which make this a great read.
and an essential read if you've read the other house of M tie-ins.

The Origin of Wolverine!, 31 Jul 2008
Finally we know why?
the answers to soo many questions about wolverine have been answered!
Simply this is a great read for wolverine fans, marvel fans, comic fans and anyone with a general interest.
i think you need a semi-strong knowledge of logan jus becuz this book is full of soo many easter eggs so to speak about his character etc.
i don't believe anyone to think it was going to start off like that but it did, the book is full of little twists, hints and opens for even more questions...which shows great story telling in my opinion...leave with soo many answers but then a few questions for you to ponder about!
To be honest one of the best graphic novels of the modern day!
The Origin Of Wolverine, 29 Jun 2007
This is a fascinating story, which really gives us a great insight on how Logan became the man that we all know. The dark tone, and the hard-hitting drama serves the purpose of this graphic novel to perfection. If you are a big Wolverine fan, such as myself, then you will enjoy this comic book.
An Excellent Comic, 12 Aug 2004
Origin is a graphic novel telling the story of the origin of the Marvel character, Wolverine. The story follows him from his childhood and his befriending of Rose, the girl brought to his family's wealthy estate to look after him, and Dog, the son of the alcoholic groundskeeper, Logan. The story carries on through a tragedy that affects the young man and instigates his mutant powers, and then the flight of him and Rose further north, and the eventual tracking of them by Dog. I was a little apprehensive at a comic like this, because I felt it might ruin the mystery surrounding Wolverine's caharacter. However, I'm pleased to say that I was wrong. The story is excellent, with some very shocking twists, and the artwork is superb. If you're a Marvel, X-men or Wolverine fan, then you will enjoy this. If you're new, then this may seem a bit confusing, but if you follow it up with other X-men stories, it should all become clear as to who Wolverine is.
Excelent, 12 Jul 2003
Brilliant just brilliant great drawings, great storyline, great writing. Tells the story of Wolverine from child to someone similar to what we know now or at least he's on his way to being the man we know. Only problem is it still doesn't explain everything leaves alot of his life still to be told.
The Origin of Wolverine...It could have gone horribly wrong!, 22 May 2003
Well, what can I say. In all my years of reading comics, never has a limited series like this struck such a chord. I have never been a huge fan of wolverine, but through the appearences he has made in titles like Uncanny X-men among others, I was intrigued by the level of mystery surrounding his past. I saw the original comics fly off the shelves in brighton, but never really got inspired enough to actually buy them myself. On a whim I decided to see what all the fuss was about and bought the graphic novel...Possibly one of the best purchases I have ever made! This book is fantastic! I was completely gripped! It was such a delight to read as marvel could quite easily have murdered the story and the character by attempting to tackle the history of wolverine after such a long time (as suggested in the foreword, the spider-man clone saga springs to mind....but then everyone makes mistakes!) but thankfully they didn't. The book has a beautiful story, matched by the equally beautiful art work, and more twists than a game of black-jack! Keep up the good work Marvel!

Not sure about the continuity but it is a good read and well illustrated., 11 Jul 2008
This ties in with a story by chris claremeont and jim lee in the early ninties about how wolverine and captian america met in WW2. It expands upon the flashbacks and makes a slightly different story than I had imagined, still this may get made sense of elsewhere. so continuity gripes aside it is a well written story that is easy to read and well characterised.

Truly essential for any lover of great comics, 03 Jul 2001
Volume 2 is excellent, but this, almost without exception, delivers first class writing and artwork throughout. Larry Hama's storylines are deep and interwoven, and all the characters are thoroughly believable. Marc Silvestri's superb artwork is even better than in Volume 2, but it's when Mark Texeira assumes illustrating duties that the art becomes fit to drool over. This is comics as good as they get, but at a bargain price.
Excellent collection of Wolverine issues, 03 Jul 2001
Some of the writing and artwork is pretty poor, but overall this excellent collection is still a bargain for the better stories and art. Particularly, it's with Larry Hama writing and Marc Silvestri illustrating (well over half the book) that the series rises into excellence. With these two at the helm bringing Sabretooth and Elsie-Dee into ongoing storylines, the characters assume real identities, and it becomes truly addictive reading.
A must for any Marvel Universe fan!, 02 May 2001
There's only one way I can think of describing this book: Amazing! This book covers another large section of Wolverine's life, mostly involving his search to discover his past but still manages to cover many other plots and subplots: shady government conspiracies, tragedy, cyborg killers, damsels in distress (and not forgetting destroying the universe to save it!), it's all there. The writing is first class (my disbelief was suspended on full pay from cover to cover) and never fails to draw you into the story. Characterisations are excellent all the way through from Wolverine himself through to the numerous guest stars. Contained within these pages are some of the funniest and most tragic lines I've ever read (in comics or 'real' books), which adds to the feeling that these are real people. Cross-over fans will not be disappointed either with a huge range of guest stars appearing. The other X-men, Nick Fury, Sunfire, Terror, Spiral and Mystique all appear and there is also the welcome return of other characters from Wolverine's past such as Maverick, Elsie-dee, and of course, Sabretooth. As with Wolverine all these characterisations are utterly consistent and never once do you feel that they haven't been done justice. Finally the artwork is probably the most consistent I have seen in a title like this, and for once the guest artists manage to do as good (if not a better) job than the regulars. This is an excellent compilation and at a price like this it's an excellent buy for Wolverine and X-men fans or a brilliant introduction into the Marvel Universe for newcomers. You'll laugh, you'll cheer, you'll cry... ...and you'll want to read more!
Great read for any X-men fan., 01 May 2001
If you are a Wolverine fan, like me, then you will love this book. But if your just a X-men fan, then you'd enjoy it just as much. Unlike the other two volumes, this one has more of the other X-men guest starring . As well as plenty of Sabretooth! Out of the set this one has to be the best. The style of drawings and the stories are better. This volume reveals more of Wolverine's past and the other's who were involved in the weapon X project. It also has a history of Wolverine at the end of the book, which is quite good. One thing's for sure, after you've read this it will leave you waiting in great anticipation for volume four! Oh yes, look out for the Clint Eastwood look a-likes.
A must-read for any wolverine fan!, 19 Dec 1999
This book shows great wolverine stories with lots of action and great art work.A must read.

The first 23 issues of Wolverine are brilliant and the stories range from 1988-1990. They are more complex than most Marvel comics. The issues contain The Silver Samurai, the vampire-like Bloodsport, the big man Roughhouse, ancient Ba'al and the Gehenna Stone, the famous Sabretooth and more. the stories range from 1988-1990
An excellent summary of apopular character!, 08 Jan 2001
It had to happen sooner or later, arguably Marvel's most popular creation gets his owncompilation. This is an excellent book, giving you a handy single volume reference for all things Wolverine. Obviously if you don't like him too much, you won't like this, also a friend who has the 'Essential X-Men' volumes says there are quite a few cross over issues, but this is inevitable I think, just something to think about when buying this. Also none of the pictures are in colour, which is a shame. My opinion, excellent, but colour would have been nice.

Classic, 21 Feb 2008
Buy this book, bub !, 12 Jun 2001
I've been an X-Men (and especially a Wolverine) fan since the late 80's. Unfortunately, I was never able to find the now classic "Wolverine" mini-series. Not until this book came along. This is really the first comic where the authors explore the human side of the man called Logan. Always considered an animal which thinks with his claws instead of his head, now we see the popular X-man beaten in battle, have his heart broken - only to come back triumphant. This book is a must for all Wolverine fans but I recommend it to those who want to find out what makes this little Canadian tick.
World Of M, 05 Aug 2008
When the Scarlet Witch warps reality to create the world of M a world ruled by Mutants where humans are the minority and Magneto the overlord ruler of Earth.
This book shows some stories from 3 famous characters inside the world of M; Wolverine, Black Panther and Captain America.
This a great book which contains 3 very different stories with different styles of artwork and stories which make this a great read.
and an essential read if you've read the other house of M tie-ins.

the answers to soo many questions about wolverine have been answered!

5 stars for the art, as for the story..., 20 Feb 2008
Jeph Loeb is a talented writer, and the pace of this story is pretty good, the characterization is also very good. However, the plot is all over the place. Sabretooth gets involved in the story at a point he is an unwilling member of the X-men, however this story doesn't fit with X-men stories that came out around the same time. minor point I know. Also it establishes the fact that wolverine is not a mutant but a different species entirely, as is sabretooth, wolfesbane, feral, thorn, sasquatch and any x-men related character that is a bit hairy and has claws. Also many of these characters were depowered and were no longer mutants after the events of house of M. something that the writer attempts to explain at least. Still despite being a continuity breaking story the pacing and action are all well handles, and it is an entertaining read. The art is fantastic.
Don't be misled, 17 Nov 2007
I dont wish to use this review as a critique on other reviews of this book, but to be quite frank, some of the gripes about this book are completley unjustified. There are a few confusing moments, (sabretooth at the mansion in particular), but if your willing to overlook these and go with the flow the story provides so much insight into wolverines origin/evolution that this is essential reading. As an X-Men reader of 20 years, i'm sick and tired of just being given half truths and explanations for Wolverine, but this actually feels like it's got some substance. This isnt the greatest comic i've read, the art is often confusing and misleading, the dialogue patchy, but the sheer amount of 'wow' moments deserves the 4 stars.
Trying too hard to be epic..., 13 Nov 2007
Here we have a title that tries quite hard to be important and overshoots the runway...
Basically, the story focuses on what could be the final clash between Wolverine and Sabretooth. Sabretooth being my favourite Marvel character, and the rivalry between these characters also being my favourite, I felt it my duty to buy this book (having only glanced at Wolverine Issue 55 in the past).
Well, where to begin? Bianchi's art would probably be the best place to start, it's nothing short of gorgeous and beautifully detailed, making each fight between these characters (and of course there are a lot of those throughout this book) as exhilarating as the next. And the dialogue itself is not that bad either, or at least, both Wolverine and Sabretooth remain in character. However if you are keeping up with any other X-men titles, the problems with the writing become glaringly obvious pretty quickly.
The book opens with Wolverine challenging Sabretooth at the X-mansion. If you have been following the X-men storyline however, this makes little sense. Yes, Sabretooth was being held at the mansion for a while (as seen in X-men: Supernovas), but never living comfortably as he's shown here. Well, maybe the X-men gave him a break? We can only speculate. However small this mistake may be, it's a prime example of how Loeb seems to be making things up as he goes along.
So the book focuses mainly on Wolverine's amalgam of memories and flashbacks, and where Sabretooth ties in with all this. Somehow we are presented with the fact that, since it's been established that the two are not related that perhaps they are descended from a species of wolf men. Personally though, I'd always considered Sabretooth to be more closely linked with wild cats, his name being the first clue. This can of course be dodged by saying "Yeah, well, it's just a name." Yes, the two have similar looks and mutations. So why not have them descended from a species of wolf creatures? Then Sasquatch, Feral, Thorrn and Wolfsbane show up, and it's suggested that they too are related to this theory. Not sure how though. Not sure it matters either.
Which is pretty much how I felt about this whole book. I enjoyed it, essentially, because the art was fantastic and on the surface the dialogue seems good too. The fight scenes between Wolvie and Sabes are all pretty intense but in the end I just felt as though none of what had been revealed throughout really mattered.
Something BIG happens to Sabretooth, Wild Child makes an appearance and comments on how the fact that Logan has black hair and Creed has blonde is supposed to mean something (again... how?) and a new enemy is revealed. But it all feels a bit like a drunken dream then a storyline that actually fits into the X-canon.
However, despite the flaws in storyline this book contains some... interesting (for want of a better word) revelations that could be considered quite important if you want to understand the characters better, or they could, conversely, ruin the character entirely for you. Either way, it seems as though a little (however small) amount of this storyline will have some effect on other X-titles, therefore I consider it worth the read. IF what happens to Sabretooth weren't such a big deal, I'd recommend the book more because the storyline might have been able to stand up on it's own without effecting other storylines in the X-universe, and thus we could pretend it never existed. As it is, I'm afraid it doesn't.
