the only problem with it is that it leaves you wanting soo much more...its that good!
Brian Michael Bendis = GENIUS!!, 28 Mar 2008
Brian Michael Bendis is easy one of my favorite writers in the comic world! This epic event in the Marvel universe will change things forever!!
After Wanda Maximoff, daughter of Magneto, goes abit loopy her grip on reality is slowly slipping away. She tries to create realities which she thinks will be better for everyone. Ask yourself this, could you live in a world you knew was a lie even if it was what you wanted? Thats what our favorite X-Man Wolverine is faced with after the world is turned white! He sets out to find Prof.X and anyone else he thinks can help restore the world back to its original self.
In this story we have a cluster of marvel heroes all working together, even the dead ones make an appearance. Also a young girl who has the ability to show people the truth! All in all an awesome story to get stuck into!!
A good story for a fresh start., 06 Nov 2007
The Avengers and the X-Men have been called together to decide the fate of the Scarlet Witch, whose reality-altering mutant powers threaten the fabric of the Marvel Universe. First let me start by saying this, in my opinion is not a huge dramatic storyline, that said what does follow on from this story greatly effects the Marvel Universe as we know it. The artwork in this TPB is lovely, some of the best artwork i've seen of late in various Marvel titles, however ever changing artists means ever changing art! As for the characters i didn't feel a lot of depth, sure the same old Wolverine who (apart from a little girl) is the only one who knows something is wrong with reality, and has to set out (with the little girl) to 'remind' people of who they really are and not what the Scarlet Witch wants them to be. The story got a little boring by the time the story got to the 'No More Mutants' words whispered by the Scarlet Witch, which depowered almost every single mutant on the planet and erased the X-Gene. However what came after this though i think has in my opinion greatly boosted the Marvel Comics Universe for the good, since M-Day i have loved reading the comics especially the X titles, the stories feel fresh and old characters and new are explored.
Due to the lack of character and somewhat sense of purpose of the story i don't feel it competes with such greats as X-Cutioner's Song or Fatal Attractions of the X titles. This is the perfect book to pick up and start with because it has rebooted the Marvel Universe in a great way.
House of Awesome!, 30 Aug 2006
This is a wicked comic.
It's pretty Twilight Zone in execution. Basically Wanda Maximoff alters reality and the X-Men and Avengers have to sort out the resulting mess.
The book opens strongly and continues in this fashion. Much care has been taken to ensure that reader understands that there is a lot at stake here.
My only gripes are that there are a lot of characters (having not been reading comics for as long as I'm gussing Marvel's target audience have) who I don't know or would like to have seen more of - such as She-Hulk. Also the panel layout is very epic. Single panels often strech across both pages and it is often unclear as to what I should be reading next. This happened a lot to me through out the reading. I was reading down when I should have been reading across.
That said there is some really lavish artwork, such as Wolverine's daring motorbike jump across a junction and the first formal introduction of the House of M itself.
A really cool comic. I'd be very sad if the Hulk and Spiderman books just show the characters in their alternate reality because I feel this story's strong enough to continue for a while on it's own.
I've ordered the Excalibur prelude from Amazon but it's taking it's time. I'd like to read that before I buy any of the later books. But I think I will get the next few since the first was so good.
This is definatly worth a read if you like this kind of thing.
ryans review, 25 May 2006
Wow,great story, great art work.Having only been reading x-men for 4 years, i found this new twist a bold refreshing move.
The story is based around Wanda Maximof (the Scarlet Witch, Whose powers have been rarely used in recent x-men books)having a break down and putting the world in jeopody. professor x calls a meeting of avengers (old and new) and the x-men,they decide something must be done .They decide to confront the Scarlet witch and the world changes, to a world were mutants rule and humans obey.
Good to see the Vision in the book, explains why Wanda was flirting with a machine at the end of The Ultimates 2.

Not bad at all but why ultron? he is a lame bad guy., 04 Jun 2008
That said the threat needed to be big and known to suit the purposes of the story. Ultron is handled well despite being a weak villain and overused in the past.
The new avengers squad is interesting and the way they are choosen is well thought out. Ares is a great addition to the line up, having some great lines and filling a vital role in the team.
The art is very good but not spectacular, unless you like letching at the sexy laadies frank cho draws so well. The highlight is the script, bendis makes great use of thought bubbles, a tool rarely used in comics these days.
High and Mighty?, 27 Apr 2008
Thor. Hulk. Scarlet Witch. Captain America. Legendary Avengers in their own right, and part of THE perennial Marvel Super-Team.
How times change. Hulk exiled, Thor missing, Captain America dead, with Iron Man the victor of the Civil War.
Which segues into the debut of all new, government sanctioned Avengers line-up; the Mighty Avengers.
A mixed roster - Iron Man, Ms Marvel, controversial character Sentry, Wonderman, Black Widow, Wasp, and of course, the anti-hero type, war God Ares.
With a new spin on the classic Avengers format, it is only fair to revamp a classic Avengers villain, in this case it is Ultron who gets the "new and improved" shtick.
This series of comics (Issues 1-6) was horribly delayed, and as a result, an arc that occurs in the space of several hours comic time, took the best part of 6 months to play itself out. The series lost many fans as a result.
As a hardback novel, collecting the arc, it reads exquisitely - a veritable roller coaster tour de force, with utterly sumptuous artwork by Frank Cho, and Bendis's usual flair for internal/external monologue segues.
This isn't the old Avengers, or even the New Avengers, this is Iron Man's dream team, and one really does get that first day at school feel with the characters as they awkwardly try to work together and gel in time to stop the monstrous Ultron from completing its task.
All in all, a great read (finally!), with superb artwork, interesting and significant character development with wider reaching consequences across the Marvel Universe, and an ideal place to begin the run up to Marvel's premier 2008 event; the Secret Invasion.

New Avengers:Civil War, 13 Jun 2007
I dont like Brian Michael Bendis on New Avengers but this is...ok. Its easier to go through this issue by issue-
Captain America-First off the art is dreadful and actually ruins this fairly decent issue. There is a fair bit of action in this and its interesting to see Cap starting to recruit for his anti registration side. Sadly we dont get enough of this and would have been good to see him meet up with say Cloak and Dagger or Cable.
Luke Cage-This is perhas the best of all these issues and is really quite interesting to see Cage's response to the SHRA and his action with both his wife and child and the fight with the cape killers at the end. The art also seems to suit this issue but all of this is sadly ruined by an incredibly chessy ending.
Spider-Woman-Art in this issue is superb and has a real movie and lifelike feel to it. The story brings a conclusion to the Spider-Woman arc Bendis had going but it has little to do with the Civil War and feel s unsatisfying.
Sentry-ugh. terrible. The artis dreadful and again the story is weak at best and reveals little of the mysteries around the sentry or civil war. It even contradicts the Sentrys story in "The Return" and actually left me even more confused over this crummy character.
Iron Man- Art is awesome...story aint great. The actual Iron Man sries did not delve much into his thoughts and feelings of Tony Stark regarding the Civil War and this is basically Tony dealing with a pissed employee and trying to make Director Hill of S.h.i.e.l.D likeable contradicting everything before this issue took place.
Overall disappointing but one of the better Civil War tieins. Just wished it couldve gone more into civil war itself...

The difficulty in writing comics like the Avengers must be in coming up with decent bad guys., 06 Aug 2008
Here bendis has taken an over used concept, magnified it and spun it all within his plot that he is building towards. The art comes from Mark Bagley who is a very competent artist, and very distinctive to. So as long as you don't mind the very clear nineties style art it is fine. The Characters are all well written, sadly many of them just aren't that interesting, Wasp and wonderman being clear examples.

Crossover at last, 18 Jul 2008
It was inevitable that Runaways and Young Avengers would get their own Civil war stance (as I write this, another Runaways/Young Avengers crossover is on the comic book shelf), so naturally these two teams team up--one the generic teen superheroes who are pretty comfortable in their marvel-ness and the other the un-generic teen Runaways who are trying to make up for their evil super-parents crimes who are at odds with the marvel universe.
The problem? The story feels more GEARED towards the Young Avengers, its firmly set in marvel-dom, with a familar superhero plotline yet the backstory feels alien and half-explained--this isn't bad per say, I'm not a reader of reader of Young Avengers myself so I was unfamilar with the characters and their world--so great of Young Avenger fans. But the reason this does not work is because--simply put, the Runways easily STEAL THE SHOW in character drama issues and in comedy yet don't hog the limelight as much as the young avengers.
Another annoyence was the humour of the Runways was done half-heartadly--the werid dialogue that makes the Runaways unique was noteably turned down a tad. Which didn't fit--it was still there, but not as much as I'd have liked it to be.
Also, Xavin seems to remain in her male form for a great deal of the story (she is confused by her gender roles at this point--but noteably spends most of her time in her female form), whether this was done with intent or not--it somehow felt as if the story was marking down on Karolina's overt homosexuality. Which made the story seem uncomfortable.
HOWEVER:
This is not as epic as the other Civil War issues out there, but a notebale great addition to the collection--Runaway fans and Young Avenger fans will appreciate it more--and its nice to see Runaways included in the Civil War stances.
The new crossover comic has Young Avengers and Runaways again, but this time wisely FOCUSES more on the Runaways this time and makes the Young Avengers take the backseat (hopefully this doesn't sound favorist of me!) But the story is also more fleshed out and formal introductions have already been made.
Overall, its worth buying this book for collections sake.

Avengers as it is meant to be, 17 Jun 2007
I am not a hugr avengers fan, So reading this recently I was pleasantly surprised. David Finch has been turning into a great artist in recent years and provides some excellent work here.
The best aspect comes from the characterisation. Luke Cage is actually likeable, where as in the past he has been little more than a token black hero with 'cool' seventies attitude who says "sweet christmas" a lot. Spiderwoman too is brought upto date and made interesting.
Much of the story is dedicated to the formation of the team and character, the plot is barely important. Bendis has done a good job of the set up.
Muddled but better than disassembled, 28 Apr 2007
This was the real reason that the Scarlet Witch suddenly went mad and the Avengers decided that they couldn't be a team anymore, so that the book could be relaunched with a fan favourite team of Avengers featuring Iron Man, Spiderman, Captain America, Wolverine and (cough) Spiderwoman and (cough) Luke Cage. Certainly this is better than Avengers Disassembled with Bendis finally seeming to get a handle on what is required to write a convincing super hero team story but it still isn't that good.
The story begins with a breakout at a prison for supervillains. Several superheroes just happen to be at the prison at the time, and a few others turn up to help fight the bad guys. Naturally they are overwhelmed, and the fight is probably one of the best bits of the book. The problem is from there on nothing really works. What was the reason for the Breakout? Why do the New Avengers go to the Savage Land? What goes on after that? There are some garbled answers to the second and last questions but none that really make sense and a lot of the answers to questions raised here are withheld for later volumes (or are still forthcoming...).
The other main problems I have are with the simplicity of the plot and the dialogue. It consists of Avengers get a lead, they go somewhere, stumble over what they are looking for and repeat. There's no sense of anything happening other than by chance. Also, through this and the dialogue, which never makes an effort to be eloquent, trying instead for stammering and the odd funny comment, makes me feel smarter than the characters and the writer. Certainly, his Captain America, who has been portrayed previously as an orator to rival Churchill and Eisenhower, is rendered to a stammering twit who can't make a point without descending into emotional outbursts. That and an absurdly chauvanist scene where Spiderwoman puts on her costume and all the male Avengers make comments on how she fills it out make me want to cringe.
That said, if this were an all new team book with brand new characters, it probably wouldn't niggle as much. It's better than Disassembled and strangely entertaining, but this is not a classic.
Return of The Avengers, 16 Sep 2006
After ripping the Avengers apart Marvel begins the task of putting them back together for a new generation. The event that brings the heroes together is a mass break out from a super criminal prison. A handful of heroes are caught up in it and a few others arrive to help out. The following day Captain America decides to put the group of heroes together as a team and officially form a New Avengers team.
Bendis is taking The New Avengers in a different direction to the previous team. Without giving anything away the theme of the title is 'conspiracy'. From finding out who organised the breakout to the why a great deal of deception is uncovered which in turn gives the team a direction to head in as they eventually try to uncover whose behind it in future issues.
Now Avengers fans of old know that The Avengers works best when it feels like a giant crossover of heroes trying to overcome a massive threat. Despite the new direction there's a lot of what makes Avengers work in this book, a lot of cameos and a lot of action. The majority of issue 2 is a huge fight scene and odd fight moments pop up throughout the book. However this team of Avengers is very different, a penthouse instead of a mansion, no official status, no money and bar Iron Man and Captain America a team with few ties to The Avengers - although thankfully Jarvis is still around.
David Finch doing the pencils is on fine form and there are a good few splash pages that go down well (Also at the back there's a collection of alternative covers). Bendis on the writing does a good job on what is essentially a setting the story up volume and gets all the characters right - don't worry Spider-Man is given a good set on gags. All in all a very good start and a fresh team of Avengers and I look forward to enjoying future volumes.
An awesome read, 10 Aug 2006
I'll just get to the basics shall I? New Avengers Breakout is one fine grahic novel. I wont go into detail about all the new Avenger members because that would take forever. This story is basically about one big supervillain breakout and the heroes taking it upon themselves to act as a team. The story is written to near perfection and the art can't be praised enough. On a different note, Carnage gets iced at the beginning.. how many times has that guy died now? Whatever. Either way with such superb story-telling this is a must for any marvel fan, even those who disliked the original Avengers, like me!
Brian Michael Bendis Rules!, 30 Aug 2005
I bought this knowing what had happened in the disassembled saga, and after leaving the avengers in such a state of disrepair meant something good had to be coming! I loved the avengers of recent and old but I did feel the roster was so high and full that it would take a while for my fave avengers members to get a look in. Yes its a shame that some died but as marvel often likes to remind us nothing can ever be for certain. Anyway I read it and I'm very happy for buying it, I've never read a graphic novel as quick it just sucked me in! The pencils and inks are of superb quality which is important to me, and the story didn't disappoint either! I'd say that the New Avengers are a good change of form and a very good read... buy it don't buy it the choice is yours. But I know I'll be forking out my money for the future volumes to come!

This is a wicked comic.
It's pretty Twilight Zone in execution. Basically Wanda Maximoff alters reality and the X-Men and Avengers have to sort out the resulting mess.

Bendis finally shapes up, 29 Apr 2008
In my opinion, and not to put to blunt a point on it, New Avengers, until this string of stories, was a mish mash of confusing and convoluted character history, some pretty pictures and little else; all style, no substance. The dialouge was appaulingly choppy and the plotting was terrible. Here however, in the fertile Marvel garden left by the wake of Civil War, Bendis manages to get his fists around the throat of his indie/Max comics heyday with an actual compeling story, reasonable dialogue and some tense moments, all complemented by the love it or hate it art of Lenil Yu (I personally love his art). Oddly enough, the crossover that resulted in some of this volumes revelations have turned into a halfway decent Crossover event, penned by, you guessed it, Bendis. I for one am glad he has left his crapulent "No more Shield, stop raping me!" era behind him, ploughing back into what made Alias and his Daredevil run great; coherence and fun stories.
Post Civil War, a book revitalised, 09 Oct 2007
New Avengers was launched out of an event designed to revitalise the Avengers brand, with Bendis at the helm collaborating with a host of talented artists. In the wake of the Civil War, the Avengers team was torn apart but is now rebuilt with a lineup of on-the-run heroes. This colletion tells their story as they search for a reason to remain a team. Bendis mixes action and drama with his usual ease and new ongoing artist Lenil Yu brings a stylised but powerful look to the proceedings. His Luke Cage especially showing deep conviction in every panel. I liked this book before the war, but love it now! (oh, and don't miss the shock ending!)
okay, gets better as it goes along., 21 Sep 2007
Originally released in seriel format, just as the marvel civil war cross over came to a close, this made more sense in that form. The story doesn't flow very well, constantly skipping back and forth through different time periods. This is due to the fact the story wasn't able to show certain events until they were revealed in other comics. That said it is a fair story that leads into bogger and better things.
The script is very good, and Bendis writes the characters well.
The art is odd
